Do you feel the Spuffy hate in other forums? Come read this....

That's true, might be something we all need to work on. Once upon a time there used to be ship-positive threads, but maybe we have gotten into a rut where that is not the case anymore. Feelings carry over.

The intention of the fanclubs however is to provide the sanctuary of a space where the ship-positivity does not have to be interrupted by negativity.

There's a big difference between the two groups, sorry to say. Spike is hated by some few people here, in a way that Angel or any other character is, as well as Spuffy. The most productive haters are relentless. In every single thread they have to give their opinion bashing the character and the ship (even not being Bangels, they go to a *Bangel* thread to bash Spike and Spuffy!) - and they don't accept we saying anything bad about their favorite character, even a minor criticisms or some flaw that he/she may have. They immediately cry RAPIST!*

*Which is something that we all have already got over a long time ago: most of the viewers, Buffy and the writers of the show. They even had to deal with the subject last year in the comics, saying that it was just something bad that happened to Buffy, among other worse things, but it seems some people still didn't get the message - the AR didn't destroy neither character nor the ship; deal with it already.

No, there is no difference.

Yes. The difference is, when the Spike crirics got a taste of their own medicine they're very surprised and offended. We less cos we're used to the 'kick the Spike game on BB

Well, apparently I am no longer allowed to respond point by point unless the thread is specifically directed to me. ^-^
But it never seems to be about loving their own ship/character preferences, but usually rapidly devolves into making it all about how awful other peoples preferences are.

That was the basis of this article, really. It's whack-a-mole - hit Angel to make Spike pop up higher, then hit Spike to.....

@Wildfly: The solution is obviously ménage à trois between Angel, Spike and Riley, with lots of oil.

There could even be sucking involved - blood sucking....get that mind out of the gutter.😀

exactly.
Yes, i love free discussion, no problem here. If we're talking about characters, let's do that for real.
We can compare opinions when we discussing characters/ships and use scapels to analyse every freaking viscera of the poor subject. let's talk about the AR, the abuse, manipulation, stalking, sweater-sniffling and so on, as well as about the positive things. I love discussion, that's not my problem.
My problem is petty behaviour, bashing the a character at every opportunity, even when talking about bad weather.
(Thanks Obama, btw, for the heavy rain)
it's not being a god sport. It's like someone got a prize and the others hate him for it and try to spoil the fun and prove he is by no means worthy.
Spuffy was/is a popular ship, so if on Valentine's some channel wants to present it to the viewers, why not?
There is no reason immediately start bashing it. That's being a sore loser.
Never in a million years, if some channel chose to show Bangel or Briley would i start bashing that ship calling it gross or perverted and spoil the fun of those who like it. I would love that Buffy gets some love nowadays, that's all.
I mean- someone found a ship good and made it top of his list - why bash? Make your own freaking list.
If some channel made a popularity poll and chose to show spuffy - why not?
Why spoil the fun of others, calling what they like gross? I was really surpirsed yesterday that people immediately started bashing Spuffy just cos the spuffy theme wss chosen and not some other.

that's pretty much exactly how I felt too. I feel kind of bad I started this thread now, I just wanted to see some nice comments after seeing all of the negativity. I thought because it was in a spuffy forum it would stay there and go unnoticed by others, live and learn I guess. I certainly didn't think it was going to throw fuel on any fires but I'm kind of new to this forum and was unaware what could happen. I'll be more careful in the future. The Valentine's show thing is certainly not the only thread I've seen where it starts on one topic and then devolves into a A vs S conversation. I'm with you 100%, if it had been a Riley or Angel marathon it wouldn't have even occurred to me criticize the tv station.

You shouldn't have to be more careful - the board is just kinda going south again.
Let's spread the Spuffy Love!

Is it negativity when the thread is just used to trash the other ship and the other fans? Cuz that's what I saw over there.
I know we can't have a safe place unless we ship those two. I've been thinking of a thread on Spike and Angel - how to put it so it doesn't devolve into another attack thread, and all I see happening is another useless argument.

Just tired and irritable today.

As opposed to this thread? Honestly, all groups can be negative about others; no need to act like only one group is a victim.

That can be seen everywhere, there and here. And the safe place is obviously for shipping, as these are fan clubs, so yes there will likely be raising of one ship over the other. Since it's in the fan clubs the non-fans don't have to read it.

Make sure the thread title specifically states that it's for positive purposes.

🙂

Oh just do it. I doubt many of the 'usual' will joining in and start moaning because It not about Spike daring to be with Buffy. *g*

I'm a Spangel so I'd post on it. 😀

My difficulty is that I want to explore their mutual history - how they evolved and who they are from all times in their history - - and that does include how Buffy affected both of them. It's a discussion board so I can't say only talk about the positive. I don't even just want the positive - bad choices is part of who they are. But I really can't see how to do that without opening the door to one or the other (usually Spike, but lately Angel too) getting trashed (with or without their fans as well).

I see echoes between them. It was Buffy who gave them both their purpose in life. I see old resentments. - "You can take what you want, have what you want, but nothing is yours" means anything you have I can take any time I want to, and you can't stop me. I see a rocky path to some degree of understanding. So yeah, some of this is digging up past uglies, and touching on some hot spots. There's a lot I see, but I don't have the energy to write a meta.

Sorry - I am also pulling this way off topic!😳

I hate all the episodes that all sound the same.. smashed, wrecked.. gone.. I will add that to the list. Cheers! I cant remember one word episodes. Hardly remember episode names at all.

I could literally watch that gif all day. Say what you want about Spike, his character flaws etc, but that physique.....

Flawless. Absolutely flawless.

He was pretty gorgeous.
Spuffy is a polarizing 'ship. Most complicated, messy ones are. Fans either hate or love them. There is no in between...at least that I've seen, and I've been in this fandom for a while.

I think 'shippers tear down other 'shippers - in all fandoms - because they feel threatened by the competition. Spuffies feel threatened by Angel, and Bangels feel threatened by Spike. Because no matter what anyone says or believes, Buffy loves both vampires, she's said so.

This is what I'm trying to figure out. Angel was fine when it was his time. So was Riley. So was Spike. Different people like different aspects of the show. Why can't people just say which character they liked by stating what they liked about them without saying I liked him and this other guy was horrible in contrast because? And why can't people say I liked this character without a whole bunch of people saying why you're wrong? Why does it have to be a competition? Do you know after I posted this thread someone copied it for both the Bangel and Briley forums? Imitiation is supposed to be the sincerest form of flattery but I can't help but think it was actually a slam. Why are they monitoring a spuffy forum to make sure we're not talking about Spike in a positive manner that we might enjoy. Maybe I'm just not competitive enough in my ship to be on these boards. I thought it was more about fun and talking about what we loved about the show than proving to strangers why our opinion is more right than theirs.

It is about fun and discussion, but hardcore fans like myself and many who frequent this board, have strong opinions, and well yeah, we like to express them.

Fans compare Angel and Spike so much because they're both vampires. It also may have something to do with the fact that Angel is so morally superior, and Spike, well...isn't so concerned with black and white, "right and wrong"...he's more fluid, lurking in the grey areas, and sees morality as more subjective than Angel does. Does that make sense? So when someone tears Angel down for doing something evil/crappy/mean, etc someone always pips up with "BUT SPIKE WOULDN'T DO THAT!" or whatever. Or vice versa.
ANGEL WOULDN'T RAPE BUFFY!
SPIKE WOULDN'T LEAVE BUFFY!
ETC

Tearing one character down makes the other look better...for a while, but a good, interesting argument doesn't use comparison as a means to make a point.

To be fair, fandom is all about opinion. Fans love giving their opinion. It's what we do. We analyze, we argue, we theorize. I, like you, just wish we could express them without having to tear others down if theirs don't match ours.

Once a fan told me that, because I 'shipped S/B, that I was immoral. It actually really affected me, and I think even now I'm overly sensitive because of it. Judging someone's character based on their preferred 'ship, or TV show, or book, or whatever is not okay. Ever.

"So morally superior"? I don't think so... they both are moral soulled vamps now, with very different personalities, that's all.

I ship Spuffy because Spike is more fun, more interesting (to me) and so easy on the eyes. I dont think it's a case of moral superiority, for me...it's just because I'm shallow like that and want to look at a hot guy who's funny to boot.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. But I'm not the only fan that sees Angel as seeing himself as morally superior...

Amen! I ship Spuffy for these reasons and more. I relate to the relationship, I've experienced relationships that are similar. I relate to Spike as well. I also truly believe that Spike is best for Buffy, and Buffy best for Spike.
