Does anyone NOT have a smartphone?

On the subject of smart phones, I read once that more people are killed every year by "distracted" (texting) drivers that have been killed in all of the mass shootings in the U S in the last 10 years.

Maybe we should start calling them "assault phones."

I was perfectly happy with my old flip phone. Used to play this South Park game where I saved cows. Loved it!!! Moo.

But since I STILL haven't bought another laptop, I use my android for internet. But I really don't enjoy being so...connected all the time. Sure, it's convenient for stuff like Google, but I truly feel that our souls are being devoured by technology.

Side note: I've NEVER liked being reachable all the freaking time. Like, go away...leave a message.

I dont have notifications on and never have. (I wouldnt know how to turn them on... )

Problem being, if people cant contact me... they used to call the police. My phone would be out of battery more often than not. Nokia used to be charged for 3 days with heavy use. Whats with their flimsy chargers too? I pulled one too hard (not hard) and it broke. Legit one. I go for the cheapies now, they break too, but I dont care so much.

I dont play games - the damn thing doesnt have enough memory for the few things I do have on it! (shh about the 3000 photos, I cant navigate itunes or the cloud either).

The updates drive me nuts! I hate it reminding me and telling me, all I wanted was something to read on the loo, not having press a bunch of tell me laters or agree, approve of stuff I dont even understand.

I've never been a fan of touch screen stuff, my hands sweat and its hard to use. I prefer my laptop but it feels so bulky over my tablet. But the tablet feels too long compared to the iphone for walking... Soon it'll probably be all voice command anyway, or eye movements, or chips in the brain.

The more I think on it, the more I want to send a mass message out with my email and cancel the phone all together. It would be cheaper than trying to find one to fit my needs and much easier. I know I have been disconnected a long time, whats one more step of separation? I tend to go down this road and realise I need the phone to be able to claim some services, and many of my appointments dont communicate any other way.

Its common now for people not to "talk" on the phone anyway.

Honesty time: I hate how much I use my smartphone and definitely want to get rid of it. It's pretty handy when you have a kid and are arranging meet ups on whatsapp in a group message, helping calm a screaming, tantruming toddler on the bus with some In the Night Garden so easily at hand. But the disconnect of sitting with friends and family and everyone's on their phones is kinda depressing. I keep thinking about how toddlers and kids these days must think everyone has a smart phone as an extension of their actual hand.

Pretty much this.

I have considered getting rid of it. I miss my old Motorola flip phone! But the smartphone is so darn convenient. I got my first one as a gift but now it'd be hard to be without it... Checking mail, travel times, audiobooks, taking pics. But I do hate how reliant I am on it.

Man are you lot showing your age 😛.

My mum is the only person I know who doesn't own a smart phone. Probably for the best since she struggles to operate her dumb phone and also the tablet I got for her. She's not stupid but some people just seem to have a block in their minds which disables their common sense when in the presence of technology.

I do have a smart phone and it's great. It gives me access to my music and audiobooks in one device. It doubles up as my wallet. I can book cinema tickets when I'm out and about. Provides entertainment while I'm bored. When I was on holiday and short of funds on my travel card I transferred more onto it from my phone. Can hook it up to watch football if I'm without a laptop. Instant notifications mean I can get gig tickets for small venues if they go on sale with little announcement. It's great for proving I'm right when my girlfriend flat out won't believe me about something as well.

The only person I know who doesn't have one is my Dad. He still has an old flip phone!

I couldn't do without but I must admit I was shocked to find out my five year old niece has had an iPhone for a while. She's five. FIVE! She doesn't have a simcard in the phone, she uses it for games, but still she's five years old. I don't think I'd personally give my child a phone that young. 🙄

My children don't have phones but we got them iPads. They don't need phones now because most of the time they are with me or their father. But once they start going to sleepovers and such, I think I will get them one.

I like my smartphone because it has kindle on it and I can read a book at work while pretending to look at work stuff. I use my second smart phone simply as an alarm clock, because it's louder than my other phone. I could live without either of them, but I really don't want too 🙂

No, no. Kindles are bad and evil things that take the fun out of reading! I thought you of all people would be in agreement with me on that😉 And I just assumed you didn't do any work at work anyway😛

I currently have 4 books on my kindle, so don't worry the devil hasn't taken my soul just yet 😀 Some kindle books are cheaper than the real thing, and I'm a girl on a budget. And I'll have you know I work very hard at work . . . or that's what I tell my boss

This. I can't tell you how many times I pass people in traffic who are texting.

It is against the law in the UK to use a hand held mobile phone while driving, either talking on or texting. Is it the same in other countries? Though I don't know how many people have been fined for doing so

Some states are that way here, but not all. California you must use a hands free phone/texting - in Pennsylvania your phone must be hands free but there's no law against texting. Which makes no sense.

Come again? 😛

Yes, it takes the magic out of life. Now I no longer have to try to convince my mother that Sam Neill is a person (and not Kevin Costner), I've been able to prove it... be careful what you wish for (those arguments had some entertainment value 😀 )

Yeah, sure it can be great to be able to prove stuff by google it on the phone.
But it really is a conversation killer. Before you could have long and fun discussions over any minor thing.
Today someone just takes out the phone, googles it and the conversation is over. Can be quite boring at times... lol

The good old days...when you had to whip out the Encyclopedia Britannica or run up the street to ask an elderly neighbour to verify facts.
No wonder younger people are heavier these days...when information is literally at your fingertips, you really don't have to get up for anything.

Haha not really. More argue til you're blue in the face, with stuff you came up with from your brain. Which can be pretty fun, and a learning experience. I think we lost the art of civil disagreement, have a laugh/drink move on, on to - IM right you are wrong, google says.
