No, Faith didn't consciously blame her actions on her background. She did the things she did because she was trying to prove, from her slightly skewed point of view, that she was stronger than Buffy, strong enough to choose a different path. She genuinely believed she could do what she did and gain from it, because she couldn't see how she was benefiting from staying on the straight and narrow.
When Joyce remarks to F-uffy that Faith must have been terribly unhappy to do what she did, it throws her, just like it throws her when Angel plays with the subject in Five by Five. Her decisions were indeed coloured by the environment she grew up in (Though I think it's important to emphasise - We know nothing about that environment for sure, only whats been implied.) but she believes, or she wants to believe, that her choices are the ultimate expression of free will.
Do not misunderstand - I am not saying that Faith's background, whatever it was, made her choices for her, and it certainly doesn't absolve her of guilt. What I'm saying is that if she'd stopped to acknowledge the effect her background had on her, it would have influenced her decisions less. I'm saying that she doesn't think she's blaming other people, because she wants to believe that she's the free one - Free of morality, free of her past, and free of the influence of her crowning obsession, Buffy.
