Faith VS. Buffy

SlayersDestiny made a good point, Faith blamed other things on the reason she was so messed up. But Buffy, time and time again, overcame her crap.

No, Faith didn't consciously blame her actions on her background. She did the things she did because she was trying to prove, from her slightly skewed point of view, that she was stronger than Buffy, strong enough to choose a different path. She genuinely believed she could do what she did and gain from it, because she couldn't see how she was benefiting from staying on the straight and narrow.

When Joyce remarks to F-uffy that Faith must have been terribly unhappy to do what she did, it throws her, just like it throws her when Angel plays with the subject in Five by Five. Her decisions were indeed coloured by the environment she grew up in (Though I think it's important to emphasise - We know nothing about that environment for sure, only whats been implied.) but she believes, or she wants to believe, that her choices are the ultimate expression of free will.

Do not misunderstand - I am not saying that Faith's background, whatever it was, made her choices for her, and it certainly doesn't absolve her of guilt. What I'm saying is that if she'd stopped to acknowledge the effect her background had on her, it would have influenced her decisions less. I'm saying that she doesn't think she's blaming other people, because she wants to believe that she's the free one - Free of morality, free of her past, and free of the influence of her crowning obsession, Buffy.

(Can't believe I haven't seen this thread before.)
I like Faith, lot more. I used to hate Buffy but I don't anymore, I understand her and I've started liking her, but never as much as Faith.

Ok, gonna be devils advocate here. Buffy was the better slayer, not because she lived a priviledged life but because she took her duties as a slayer seriously. She also never used them as a crutch or excuse for her actions.

I agree, of course Buffy took her slayer duties more serious. But didn't Faith do that too until she met Buffy? I realize Faith hadn't been a slayer for long and that she maybe wasn't as focused as Buffy was. But, when Buffy first moved to Sunnydale (I'm not gonna discuss stuff that happened before that) she wasn't too pleased about following the slayer rules either. (In a different way, I know, Faith was into the violence but not the rules and Buffy didn't want to have anything to do with the slayer thing at all..) But then, when Buffy had accepted being a slayer, she had the best watcher in the world and great friends who did their best to help and support her. When Faith came to Sunnydale she was alone, Buffy didn't want her there and she wasn't really needed, it's not like they begged her to stay or anything, but she was there, she wanted to help them and she did. But of course Faith never felt like she was really needed or wanted, there were already a slayer who wasn't too pleased with not being the one and only.. I'm not surprised things didn't turn out for Faith the way they did for Buffy.. (Not saying it doesn't have anything to do with Faith's personality, but she also had a harder time to get into the slayer thing in the beginning.. Buffy was almost forced and Faith had to work her way there..)

Slayerwise it must be Buffy. I love Faith but has she ever won over Buffy in a fight?

You've got a point there. Personally I think it's all about Buffy being better at the psychological parts. Buffy knows what Faith haven't got and used that in a way to kick her ass. There were a lot of things she didn't have that Buffy did, love among other things and Buffy wasn't afraid to use Faith's lack of certain things, thereby kicking Faith.

But I have to say that I prefer Faith to Buffy even though Buffy might be stronger. Faith is a human being, more so than Buffy in some aspects. Buffy is a hero and a champion and all of that and even though she's got family and friends she'll never be the flawed human Faith is and to me the flaws is what it's all about.

I agree. I'm guessing that's why I keep defending Faith although she makes a lot of mistakes, or.. not entirely good things. (Not saying Buffy hasn't made mistakes, she sure has.) But you're right, Faith is more human that way. She isn't the super hero idolized person Buffy is, mainly because no-one has let her be. Which I'm guessing has made her into a rather cool person (despite her (in my opinion quite wonderful) attitude problems).

I think Buffy is the best, as she is good, and has always been good, unlike Faith who went bad. Also i think she is the better fighter, Faith is quick and agressive but Buffy has strengh and skill. Also she has beaten Faith in fights before! I do love Faith but just not as much as Buffy.

i'd have to say buffy,i prefered Faith as a baddy ye faith is good she can fight and all but i prefer buffy! :fighting0

If I was choosing who the better 'Slayer', was it would obviously be Buffy, hands down. But If I was choosing the better 'Character', it is most definatley Faith. 🙂 She had such depth, and I really thought that she was one of the shows best characters.

I totally agree, Buffy was indeed a better 'slayer' but faith's character was one of THE best in the series.

I'm going to half agree with the crowd 😛

I think that Faith was a brilliant character, for what she was, but I think that Buffy was so much more... She has to many adversities to overcome, and through-out everything, she did it. And like someone said earlier, she did so instead of leaving it up to someone else, or blamming it on her past. They were both fairly young Slayers, but they developed entirely different because of it.

I loved Faith, but not because she was a kick-ass Slayer... Because she was Faith, and she knew how to mix things up..

I'm gonna go with Buffy. The first time I saw Faith i didn't like her at all, but that's chenged now, I really like her and especially in Angel. But Buffy is the one that's closest to my heart. It's her I always find myself agreeing with or atleast I always understand her actions. And her development through the series is so interesting and even if we live very different lifes I recognize myself in her.

Faith may be A crazy person in season three and four but she is really good in season seven

Faith is kinda psychotic if ya ask me. She just doesn't know when to quit.

Exactly, she said it herself.

'You know what the definition of insanity is, baby? Performing the same task over and over and expecting different results. Learned that in murder rehab.'

She kept coming back for more, hurting buffy, hurting wesley, hurting everyone she cared about, but frankly I don't know what she thought would change by doing so. ::dk::

But you guys must agree that see is an effective slayer.

Not when comparing her to Buffy, especially during the 3rd and 4th Seasons.

In terms of power and skill, I think Buffy is better. When talking about a better character, that is subjective.

I like Buffy because she overcame her problems, and never went to that dark place. There are plenty of times when she could have, but she stayed true to her calling.

Everyone thinks that Faith is cool or so badass, and they like her just because she went evil and wore leather, but I don't get that. She may have been fun, but that's really all I saw her character in the 3rd and 4th Seasons as. I loved her in Season Seven.

They both endured struggles, although only one of them had the courage to never let it take priority over their work.

I don't know if that's entirely true; at least not IMO. But then again, it depends on what you define as "the dark place". One dark place for buffy could be sunshine for Faith.
After Faith poisoned Angel, Buffy was willing to kill Faith in order to save Angel. But I don't think it was just about saving Angel, she saw the chance to get back, get even steven and cause her some pain. If she had always stayed true to her calling, she wouldn't have gone after Faith. Because killing people is not what slayers do, she said it herself in 'Bad Girls'.

WILLOW: Buffy, if Angel drains Faith's blood, it'll kill her.

BUFFY: Not if she's already dead.

Now if that ain't going over to the dark side...

Buffy had plenty of "dark" moments through out the show, does that make her evil? Or do people defend her and cause they think she's such an angel because she's the star of the show?

And that she "had the courage to never let it [the struggles] take priority over their work" is not entirely true either. Sure Buffy did a great job during the seven years but she was never any "superslayer" -- sometimes she would put her own agenda before the good of friends/others and if it hadn't been for her friends, she could have ended up exactly where Faith did.
But then again no one is perfect, not even Buffy. It just bugs me that it seems like you're not aloud to criticize Buffy and have to treat her like she's pefect just cause she's Buffy.

Well Faith was a liability and as much as I hate to say this, Angel was far more important to Buffy and the fight. Faith had proved herself to be unstable and bad.

Every character showed us a moment when they were not perfect, but we defend Buffy because of her actions in "The Gift" and "Becoming", not to mention countless other times. Sure Faith had her great times like in "Orpheus", and she had her dark times....

I disagree with this, especially the "superslayer" remark.

Buffy accomplished far more than Faith every did in terms of slayerness, power, skill, life. Buffy had a rough life too, but people forget that so easily. Imagine losing everything you loved time and time again, then going to heaven and being ripped out. Sorry but what Buffy was going through in Season Six was greater than anything Faith could imagine.

Sure she was an effective slayer if you consider killing eveyone and everything effective if all she was killing was vamps and other evil doers things would have been different. She just couldn't control her impulses.
