Fan Art on the Board

Kay just seeing this thread now, I'll start crediting from now on 🙂

I only use. Dafont.com and Screencap paradise, and i use the gradients that you get with Ps.
🙂

Wow, a lot of talk about Fan-Art. I didn't even realize Buffy-Boards was so heavily involved in Fa-Art. So the banners count as F-Art?

Like the one you're using? Yep. But I imagine that it's only the font you need to credit for.
Btw, when we credit font and stock etc etc, we don't have to do that in signatures, just in our fan art threads? We only credits fan art in sigs if they were made by anyone else?

LMAO I love your banner! So funny!
About the whedonverse magazine I'm doing, with art & articles from fans. I'm almost finished with the layout, and I think I can't even remember like half of the people that deserve credit (slayerverse.org, dafont, people who's stock images I've used). And then there's other people who made layout contributions and I'm not sure they know who they should credit either.

Could I still post the finished mag in the whedonverse magazine thread with the few credits I remember? Or a link to it?

So I'd have to credit Microsoft? I'm pretty sure they own the Font...
Oh tell me about it, i can't remember where i got my old textures/stock images from, :/

If the banner in your sig was made by you, then you don't have to give any credit in your sig, as long as you HAVE the credit somewhere, either in your art thread, or stored at home. (In case someone contacts you looking for the info, or the artist of the resources)

Also, please remember that you cannot cite Google images as your resources for images:

Google Image Search didn't create the textures, gradients, stocks or images. And by using Google, you run the risk of searching for, say, Buffy Summers, and coming across a manipulation off Buffy that an artist has made, yet you are unaware that it isn't an original image, which is the plagiarism we're talking about, although you might be unaware that you're are actually stealing.

If you do use Google Image Search, then you should be taken to the website where the image originally came from, which you can cite, not Google itself.

Alrighty :)
Buffyverse Fan agrees: So I'd have to credit Microsoft? I'm pretty sure they own the Font...

Maybe I should have let a mod answer that one. Not sure if we have to credit companies or fonts that come with programmes.

As I said earlier, fonts are different. Those that come with the programs are free for any and all use. Fonts that you download from dafont.com or similar are usually free for personal or non-commercial use, although there are some creators that require credit, but it will tell you that when you're downloading, so make sure you check.

So would something like this work:

Other than the fact I would actually put TEXT in there, dur!

Like I said, fonts are different, but everything else seems great.
I'm sorry but IMO this is totally ridiculous. This might stop 'art theft' or whatever (ot that i've really seen any) but this will just drive people away from making art and thats not what its about.

It shouldn't drive people away from making art. I know it's a little extra work, but really it's not that hard to try to remember where you got certain things and give credit as a way of saying thanks to the artist who made the textures/fonts/screencaps. It does take more effort, definitely, but I really hope that this doesn't discourage people from posting their work here 'cause that would be a crying shame. 🙁

Sorry, meant to leave it as karma. It has me. Unless it is something I REALLY want to do I dont think I ever will. I disagree with the rules in place, while I do UNDERSTAND why, I simply have far too many layers to list where each came from. The example above was the smallest layered art I have done in a long time and even that was an arduous task. And I think partly as a professional graphic designer I find it a bit insulting. I think it is 'punishing' the whole for the acts of a few. But if that is what must be done to keep the BB in the clear, then it must be done.

Honestly, I understand where you're coming from. A few months ago I probably would have said "Wow, that's pretty strict." But I had one of my banners completely ripped off a couple months back, so I know first hand how it feels when someone takes your work and claims it as their own. I was sitting here looking at the screen going "WTF?! That's not hers, it's mine!" It really does cheapen it for you when you've let your creativity flow to make something you're really proud of and that you think is beautiful, only to find out someone's stolen your idea and getting credit for it. So that is why I can understand the need to credit everything you use in your artwork that's not your own.
If people don't want to credit others, then maybe they should try harder to learn how to make their own textures, or get a screencapping program, or even learn how to make their own fonts. I know this has pushed me into trying harder to make my own textures, and it's been something I enjoy doing. 🙂

I don't mind, it's just i keep forgetting to credit, plus I've had a lot of textures on my comp for ages, and i don't remember where i got them from, i know that's terrible forgetting.
I've already had one warning for forgetting to credit.

:/

i suppose it isn't really that big a deal, but when you start getting infractions for forgetting to credit, it's like oh crap.
Plus a few days ago i was in a hurry and forgot to credit, i just uploaded them quickly then signed off.
I'll try harder, ha. It's not rocket science! Just remembering!

Understood. That is where the trouble I have with it comes from.. there is a difference between simply copying a banner/wallpaper and saying you made it, from using sections of a banner/wallpaper(s) altering them and placing them into a new piece. That is not plagiarism, yet it is treated as such. Andy Warhol would be considered a plagiarist if that were the case, and granted, SOME DO consider him one. I can take for instance an 800x600 wallpaper that I found online and have dozens of clipping paths taking small background images from, that is not ripping them off. But to say that 800x600 wallpaper is mine without altering it (or making only minor alterations) to the point where it is difficult to distinguish yours from the original IS plagiarism. That is my issue with the rules in place. But I fully understand that others arent as, um, careful, so it's cool.

Oddly enough, if the rule were post the pieces you used, as opposed to links and names, I would have no problem with that at all.. posting all the pieces that made the wallpaper to prove you 'made' it, or when a piece is questioned then ask for the information would be perfectly acceptable to me.. but it's not about me so.. I digress. It's just I have an external terrabyte full of limited rights images and going thru and tracking down from who they came is problematic.

But it IS plagiarism. If I posted a wallpaper here and someone took the wallpaper I made and cut it up to use it as a banner, I wouldn't mind- as long as I was given credit. If someone took a wallpaper I made and used it to make a banner and then made it seem as if they made it, I'd be PISSED off.

No, its not plagiarism. And let me illustrate so there is no confusion. I am looking at your banner and I like the helmet of armor.. i clip it and use it in something of mine. That is what I am talking about, and that is not plagiarism as just using "your" helmet in my piece in no way attempts to defraud the public into thinking your piece is mine or vice/versa. That is what I am talking about.. not wholesale copying. Now, If I were really concerened with you coming back and saying that is 'my' helmet I would flip the horizontal axis, alter the color, and make minor alterations to some of the design (which is what I do) and that is in no way plagiarism (nor does it fall under copywrite infringement, by the way, and I know that firsthand). You see what I mean?

I see what you mean... And I agree that wouldn't necessarily be considered plagiarism!

Tnx. This is excactly the kind of stuff I'd like to learn.
Also, sometimes people who put textures say that you don't need to credit. Look for this and it may save you some extra work. 😉
