I guess I still dont understand the rules, as they seem to change. When it first started it said if you used another artists work in something you made you needed to have permission from them and link back, then it was just link back and if you couldnt provide a link it was best you didnt use the graphic,
Whenever you're using another person's work in your art, yes: you want to ensure (as best you can) that the original artist is okay with you using their material. Often when an artist posts a resource or piece of art, they will have some kind of claimer saying whether or not they'd like their material to be reused.
If they ask that their resources not be reused; don't use it. If they have said that it's okay for others to use it, go ahead and cite the source when you post your artwork. If the site doesn't say anything, use your best judgment and cite the source when you post your artwork.
and now just list resources, then another one read 'if you have them' so I just dont know what is acceptable and what is not as far as the length to ensure the rule is followed and I dont get another infraction.
This means that
ideally we want you to post links to any resources that you use in your fanart; but obviously that's an issue for some folks (as they have already saved resources on their computer and can't recall the original source). As a compromise, we ask that you post links to any resources that you can and if you run into a problem and don't know where something came from just indicate that. (As Buffy Summers mentioned,
here)
As far as infractions go, you will be receiving 3 warnings about this rule before we will infract (as was stated in the first post).
I dont understand the purpose of the rule so I cant deduce what is flexible and what is not. I thought I understood the rule and what it was for, but CLEARLY I did not.
As Buffy Summers said, we have run into an increasing amount of issues with plagiarism on the board and wanted to make it clear to everyone what our rules are when you're using another person's artwork/sources.
And as has been mentioned before, crediting your sources is not only expected on many Fan Art sites but it's also a courtesy that you should show to the people who put time and effort into making those resources. We think it's only reasonable that we all do our best to give credit where credit is due.
I hope that cleared things up for you. If you have any further questions on the matter, please feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to answer any specific questions that you have regarding the new rules.
🙂
