Favorite Non-OMWF musical?

They're corny. They're silly. Admitting you like them is terminally uncool. But we all have a favorite musical (or two...)

Mine is Walter Hill's sublimely silly 80's musical Streets of Fire, starring Willem Dafoe, Diane Lane, Michael Paré, Rick Morranis, and Willem Dafoe's hair.

Oooo MUSICALS... okay... hmmm let me see.... as a child and teen I was dragged to every musical going... Les Mis, Phantom, Annie, Aspects of love, Miss Saigon, by Jeeves etc etc....

My Favourite Stage musical would be:

Sunset Blvd.

A tale of love, obsession and death... Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on a Black & White movie it sees a struggling writer happen upon an old mansion in sunset blvd (After an obligatory car chase). in this house there is a lady and this lady happens to be Norma Desmond famed star of yesteryear... star of the silent movies but when Talkies arrived on the scene, she refused to make the transition and has been festering in her mansion ever since... needless to say Joe Gillis (the Struggling writer) is drawn into editing this womans script for her Come Back... no Return... it goes from bad to worse as Joe falls in love with a young lady... but no... watch the movie, listen to the Original Cast Recording... it closed 5 years ago on the west end after a long long run which saw...

take on the role of Norma... fantastic stuff, you'll prolly have heard 'The Perfect Year' as its been in the charts once or twice, very sappy...

My joint Fave:

Into The Woods

Stephan Sondheim, availible on DVD... basically 3 or 4 fairy stories with a twist, they all merge together, each crossing the others path... the first half sees Cinderella get her man, the Bakers Wife gets her Baby, The Witch gets her look, rapunzal escapes the tower etc etc.... the second half charts the decline in their 'Happily Ever Afters' as The Giants Wife (Jack and the beanstalk) comes down to seek revenge on the boy who killed her husband 🙂

I love musicals! I often wish that our whole lives were a giant musical. I am more traditional in my favorite one.

I love The King and I-etc. etc. etc.
 
Ya know. I am a newbie. I am only at the end of S3, so I have not seen it yet! Should I be scared?

*breaks out into song* Only mine until, the time comes round, to pay the bill... but I'm afraid, what can't be paid, must be returned, you never ever learn that nothing's yours on easy terms... Living on the never never, constant as the the changing weather never surrrrrrrre who's at the doooooooooooor, or the price you'll have to pay....
 
I guess I should've specified movie musicals, but hey - if we're including stage musicals, I've gotta give props to Stephen Sondheim's Assassins!

Fear not, Chasity - it's awesome! But it being Buffy, you'd no more want to live in OMWF as a musical world than you would want to live in Surprise as a sex world. 🙂
 
I like raunchy musicals, so Rocky Horror picture show is at the top of my list. Second fave is South Park The Movie, yes it it was musical, a very well done one at that. And let's not forget Xena: The musical episode (*shudders)
 
South Park The Movie! Good call, Hostile_17. I'm not a huge fan of the tv series, but that movie made me laugh till I cried.

There's a Xena musical??? Interesting. From your shudder, I take it that it's awful?

I loved that, and still do now, and Im soo not ashamed to admit it either! 😉
 
Dooby doo doo doo de dooby doo doo doo, I'm "Singin' in the Rain"...

is one of the most joyous films ever made, so it gets my vote as best musical. Also, "The Commitments" must count as a musical and also joys me up - so First Equal (not Evil). Oh, having seen "Rocky Horror" umpty diddley times - I reckon that's a close second. "Little Shop of Horrors" I also liked - so third place then...

Musicals, show tunes: I could almost be gay 🙂
 
It's all good, Mr. Pointy!

As a straight man who loves The Little Mermaid (without the irony) and Xanadu (with the irony intact, thank you very much), I can say with utter conviction that we're not alone.

We may be a part of a small group forced to hold its meetings in the basement of an abandoned foundry outside of Cleveland, but we're not alone. 🙂

I'm not sure I can make Cleveland (unless you mean the NE England county🙂) - it's a hell of a road trip! 😉 But yea, I do like those old 40's and 50's musicals - they're real good turn-off-your-brain, happy, happy films on the whole. We all need a bit of that from time to time. OOhh, I forgot the Fred Astaire films...

...and the South Park film as a musical: good call guys. I've never thought as it of one but it surely is. Mind you, those guys seem to drop musical numbers in regularly don't they? And wasn't one of their first efforts "Cannibal: the musical"? (Haven't seen that one)
 
I'd have to agree with South Park and Male Slayer, I love Grease 2 actually. The first one just didn't hold my interest much...Other than those I really don't think that I'm a big musical buff.
 
I take my place amongst those who love musicals.

I really can't decide which is the best one. There are so many wonderful shows and films.

Movie-wise I really loved Chicago.

Stage musicals that I love are City of Angels, Les Miz, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Beauty and the Beast, Candide and and and and....
