Feminist reboot of Charmed

And she looked great playing Kira . Could have been more 🙄

She was really great as that character, I remember being kind of sceptical about it at first, but she was so loveable. I would have really liked for her to be a recurring charater, I felt that she had a nice connection with Phoebe.

I agree. They played well together.

What will the age of the witches be? Will there be another strong matriarch, mild mannered mother and emotional flake? Or will they shake that up? I hope they choose girls at different stages, with some different attributes. And better powers.

Good point on the powers, I feel like Charmed struggled a lot with making their powers interesting and hence kind of sped up the developing state of them. In theory I think that their powers are fine, but I don't think they'd look so cool on TV today, considering how many superhero/kicking ass/dragon shows there are now. 😉¨

If it's set in a college town, maybe one of them will be in college? Hopefully they'll shake up the dynamics, though I imagine they would be similar. The first season especially I felt they had really interesting sisterly tensions.
Huh, I just realized it'll be hard to think of it as Charmed without their house. (I love their house)

YES, I adore the Halliwell Manor, exterior and interior. Has anyone ever been to the exterior? It's been used in other media and I think it's located somewhere in L.A. I would love to visit one day if I ever go to America.

Never been to the exterior but would love to, the house is like a character in and of itself
I'm not sure if I'd want to see the house, would it be as I remember, did it appear bigger on screen. And what of the floor are my memories correct or are they flawed? Also if any of the house is there then the house exploding in season eight mean it was faked.

Cool! Really love that house, it seems remarkable well-kept for being so old! Though must say while I do envy any one who actually got to live there this house is the one I'd want (if I could get one that is) Haskins House | Los Angeles Conservancy
I don't think I'd like either one. I mean, only one bathroom. No. That doesn't work. And the lot size is so small.

All I care about is having a turret. If I don't have a turret, how will people know what a witch I am?

Yes, I went up there a couple of times back in 2004. Pretty cool. 😀

Yea Gods, you said you would.. .. and you said you would start a new thread. You told a fib - naughty girl.

I said maybe. 😛 *shrugs* *skips away*

What's this another avatar, you are so good to me, thank.
Taake,
you said about having a turret, would that be for a house 'cos if it was I'd say that was real charmed of you, yeah, right on you know, canon!
Or is that cannon, I'm not sure.
But if you only allow girls to use the cannon, that is sort of feministic isn't it?

I heard about this a while ago and was surprised because if I’m being honest, the original show wasn't very good enough to warrant a reboot. It started out somewhat ok, but I don’t think it ever found its footing and focused on the wrong things. Instead of telling a story that was consistent or developing its characters it seemed to be more about dates and avoiding their destiny as heroes.

The reboot could almost be like a second chance to analyze where the original faltered and rework those elements into an improved story, but it doesn't seem like they will. They’re highlighting things like “feminist reboot” and “fighting the patriarchy” in the description and its super silly which might indicate that the show might be played for laughs.

This article is a really good analysis of the “feminist” angle in my opinion.

Was Charmed Ever Really a Feminist Show?

I agree with painting a show with a “broad feminist brush” often working against female led media sometimes. At the same time, I think it is necessary to analyze and improve the representation of how women are portrayed as a whole.

Also, if you haven't seen Charmed and have a couple of hours to spare I think this reviews series called Manic Episodes highlights all of its problems in a pretty comedic way. There was a link posted earlier in the thread to the vids, but here is a play list of them all. If you watch them all you can get an idea of the story without having to endure all 178 episodes

Yes, this is a concern of mine. I dont want to see women in the same roles we've always had, having to hide our power, work from the background, never take credit. Encouraging the same roles of behaviour, like the original, over and over on repeat does not appeal. I like the article you linked too.

Everyone gets their own cannon. Cannon's a'hoy! It's only fair.

Sorry ABK, I thought as much,
one post to many,
oh well,.. .. .. oops.

I was rather snarky about the idea of a Charmed coming out with the theme of "smashing the patriarchy" (though given how Hollywood, including their women writers, tend to treat feminist themes, I think I'm justified in doing so, and also being suspicious of the claim that it's really going to be about that, or even if it's likely to come out at all). I thought the best I could hope for is that it's unintentionally hilarious.

But I was just remembering Witches of Eastwick. Now this is a novel and a movie done by men, though I'd say it's more feminist in nature than Charmed, and certainly more than the brain cell destroying movie Teen Witch (written by women). I recall sexual harassment being depicted and even the man that seems sympathetic which the women are hot for (so they overlook a lot they shouldn't) turns out to be manipulative and ultimately threatening that the witches have to unite together to defend themselves against while also defying the town (which could be described as patriarchal, even if the main defender of the patriarchy is a female character). As best I recall it could be described as 3 women who discover they're witches and find themselves overwhelmed in dealing with what could be called "patriarchy" and ultimately having to vanquish a supernatural male demon (who gives the speech asking in church if God made a mistake in making women or if He did to them on purpose).

And I remember liking it a lot. (I at least skimmed the novel, I can't recall if I actually read it, and my memory on the novel is even more vague than the movie. This was 18 years ago, though I saw the movie more than once since then.)

Granted, I was a teenager when I first saw it (and was exposed to the novel), and I think in my early 20s when I saw it last. I don't know if I'd like it the same today as I did back then. I'm going to try to rewatch it again soon...even if it looks different to me today it's usually interesting to rewatch movies and shows from my youth because of how different they look, regardless of whether I like it more, less, about the same, or just in a different way than before.

Anyway, I'm about to go to sleep and just throwing that out there. I'm curious what others may have thought of WOE (or, if you were unfortunate enough to see it while sober,Teen Witch ). As best as I recall it now (and I forgot the movie even existed until tonight) it could be thought to have a theme of "smashing the patriarchy" even if only a personal level in a small town. And though I'm still cynical in so many different ways about this announcement of a rebooted Charmed, I'm wondering if just maybe I should give it more of a chance.

But more likely I'm just talking about it, and getting others to talk about it, because in my weakened state (in need of sleep) a click bait article got me to talking about it, just as their marketing division hoped would happen. Ah well, if something interesting comes out of it then it's worth it.

oh god, I'd repressed Teen Witch... lol, that was a baad movie
OK, the screenplays will be written, locations scouted, actors cast, directors hired, producers paying for it all but that does not mean that any of the networks will (be dumb enough to) pick it up. If the pilot looks as bad as the last few seasons of the original Charmed, network execs will pass on it (this is one industry where pass = fail).

Smashing the patriarchy and establishing a matriarchy does not seem to be a change towards a better world, just the same world with different beneficiaries. It could turn out to have a sense of "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home", a miniseries from a few decades ago of a town where men are sacrificed to ensure that things will go well in the rural town of Harvest Home, in which case it would not sell the idea of female empowerment to any men who happen to be watching.

BTW "The Witches of Eastwick" was a great movie and it shows that some men understand feminism better than some women.

The network committed to it before screenplays were written, locations scouted, actors cast, directors hired. The network first agrees to do a show and then they make it happen.
