Wait. What? They are saying the reboot of Charmed will be a feminist show and the focus will be on feminism and empowering the lead characters. I never watched Charmed but I just gathered that was what the original was about, wasn't it?

How does this: “This fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.”

Differ from how the show initially was?
 
I saw the first 4 eps which I barely remembered, and some of the vids referenced in this thread which is why I say I'd hate to think that was feminism (as opposed to "aimed at women" which is different).

I might give a feminist reboot a try in the hopes it will be unintentionally hilarious. And maybe it could give me insight into what people are saying about how "diversity" is ruining games, comics, etc. The argument some have that may be valid (I don't know as I'm not a fan) is that people who don't care about the content are pushing an ideological movement with political zealotry and anger (and failing to understand what diversity actually means, it more turns the tables rather than promoting genuine diversity) at expense of stories and characters.

That is, some people have no problem with diverse backgrounds, ideologies, minorities, and all that, but that an entertaining media is watered down with ideology so that it ceases to be engaging. Put another way for those with the hardcore ideological brains lens on, it's not that there are diverse characters that are ruining it, but political zealots who care nothing for the story other than how they can use it to promote their ideology, which is sure to create a backlash from the actual fans of the story which has nothing to do with racism, misogyny, etc. As I'm not a fan I'm not sure what to think (I haven't noticed it too bad in the movies, at least back when I was going, but was told it didn't show up in movies anywhere as much, and sometimes when they were diverse, it was actually interesting rather than trite, unlike the games and comics). I do know that some people can't measure anything other than how it conforms to their ideology (every other detail trivial to them), however, and those people can't be expected to write good stories for the general audience.

Of course a "feminist reboot" could be damn good, but I won't hold my breath.

OG Charmed: All about them finding men. Literally. That's the main source of drama on the show. "How will we get guys? I need a new guy! How can I suck the soul and sanity from my last guy and then find a guy?"
Phoebe's romance plots are basically the theme of the first 7 seasons. They barely talked about anything else.

OG Charmed: Tearing down the patriarchy.... I can't say there's any of that in Charmed. But I'm sure others have a different opinion.

I'd watch a reboot though. Charmed is a guilty pleasure for watch for me,but the execution of it was flawed. But I love the original idea, so a reboot sounds ok.
But maybe I'm open to it because I had repressed until recently that there is a plot in season 6 or 7 when the Charmed ones, because of a special moon, literally turn into werewolves and kill people when they have PMS. PMS-werewolves! They kill people! *oh hardy har har* them wacky women troubles!

Charmed is incredibly romance, let's find these gals a man, centric. I can't remember a single episode when there wasn't romance/dating drama, and multiple plots about Phoebe needing to open up her heart and finding her true love. It was as bad as Baywatch in that respect. (Only thing they did better than the Hoff was having some long-term relationships)

It was through all of these plots that I learned that Alyssa Milano is a terrible onscreen kisser. She looks like she's trying to eat the guys' faces. It's quite off-putting.

@GraceK haha, yes they sure were. But they did get me to do some rewatching myself, it's just so silly-fun, and maybe I like getting annoyed with its stupidity? (what's wrong with me? 😉 )

Nothing at all! I may enjoy making fun of it, but I still love watching the show 🙂 it’s like popcorn for the brain

It's by the same chick that did Jane the Virgin and that's going strong. Plus it's on CW where they drain the well dry and try to fill it up again before ending a series. If Supernatural is on S13 I think it's a safe bet that Charmed could last 7.

Anyway, I guess it could but if this is appealing to the SJW crowd- with its reference to 'tearing down the patriarchy' -then I doubt it will get the long-term audience required.

No I don't think the original show could be called feminist. I mean it was an Aaron Spelling show after all😛

That's because you lack imagination. It could be really funny. Now that I know the tone of the original, imagine when one of them is jilted they do a spell to make the guys wanger fall off and then they carry it around as a trophy. The guy could come begging at the door:
'please give it back to me'
'ok, hope you learned your lesson. don't mind the smell, we had it in the compost bin'
 
I don't think the OG Charmed was feminist at all! I know the first 2 seasons were all about sisterhood and the focus was put on family and their bonds which was great! After that, they changed direction and it was all about dating and cleavage. I did like it because I was a teen and didn't really look into it too much but when I tried a re-watch I just couldn't unsee it!

As for a rebbot, I like the idea because I use to love Charmed but like always I am skeptic about the new casting and the plot lines. I just hope that the tearing down the patriarchy thing will a concept like the watcher's council where you understand the idea but it's not too on the nose. I don't want a another preachy show like Glee or a boys are jerk show.

Depends where you live I guess. Here it's still pretty much about equality. On tv however, I wish they would stop marketing their characters as feminist and just make their female and male character equally present and interesting. Feminist shouldn't be a niche but a generalization (like ethnic diversity and presence of the LGBTQ+ community). I know, I know I am a dreamer!!!
 
There are some aspects of feminism that I don't relate to, and even see as toxic and counterproductive, and possibly worse. I used to think it was a minority or even straw feminism. I see it's not now and so now I know how Christians feel who believe in Jesus but see the Christian Right as not being Christian or living by Christian values, or at least very different from themselves that they don't want to be associated with (but are because the Christian Right has so much influence in politics and tends to be so vocal). I'm wondering if I should just call myself a secular humanist that includes the feminism I wholeheartedly accept and distance myself from the term feminist. It makes me sad to think about, but I just can't go along with what seems like the popular feminism today, especially not the kind that dominates twitter, tumblr, etc (and thus the greater society).

You think a society where the matriarchy would be stronger than the patriarchy would be worse for you as a woman? I think it would suck for men which is wrong because I don't think they need to experience our struggles to understand them. I don't want to devalue your thinking, you are intitled to your own belief and that's very important. I just don't understand when women prefer the way things are now to an exaggeration of the women rights.

What don't you like about the popular feminist?

For me personally it’s this idea that every man is a dirtbag and women can do no wrong. For example I was listening to a podcast last night that covered Angel season 4, and the girls were talking about the whole Connor/Cordelia/Angel issue. Instead of addressing the fact that Cordelia manipulated a teenager and slept with her friends vulnerable son, oh and that she was evil, they took issue with the fact that Angel was treating her like an object by being mad. They were applauding her choice as a woman to sleep with whoever she wants and felt that Angels fantasy where she apologizes is somehow misogynistic. It was actually hard to stomach. They also didn’t seem to pick up on the irony of Manny, the immortal ra tet being a dirty old man and wouldn’t stop complaining about how horrible he is and how his behavior is unacceptable.

This kind of thinking where everything is a chance to get on a soapbox is really irritating to me personally.

Ok I have to agree with this. Some people just want to see bad behavior where there isn't. That's actually what I meant about things getting too preachy!
