Episode Discussion Game of Thrones, Season 8

I thought about putting this in the LAWL thread but figured it would get more LAWLs here

I thought this episode was a bit underwhelming. My favourite scene was the knighting because you knew how much it meant to her.

The guy who plays Gendry said it was uncomfortable for him cos he acted with her as a child. Maybe that's why people are weirded out?
It never bothered me. Maybe if she was done up more womanly (because people see her androgyny as Arya as her still looking like a child) there'd be less of a problem for them. People have very rigid ideas of sexuality depending on what people look like.

I think a lot of it is because she's a little midget which makes her appear to be younger than she is.
@Spanky Maisie is actually 5'1. So not short enough to be a midget. Also she's actually only one inch shorter than Emilia Clarke (Daenerys). Think since Maisie's surrounded by so many tall cast members (Sansa - 5'9) (Hound -6'6) (Brienne - 6'3), she just seems shorter.

Yeah I know a lot of girls her height. They're more common than the lanky lassies ;)
Jeezo, The Hound is 6'6? When I first found out Rory McCann was playing that character it threw me, cos he's been in TV over here and all my previous knowledge of him is as this gentle giant with a lovely smile and a soft spoken Glasgow accent. And then he shows up in Game of Thrones as this big ugly gruff sounding guy who looks like he'd destroy you. 😂 He's very convincing.

Yeah, I think it might be the puppy fat around her face. I saw Divergent recently and was really off put by the roundness of the girls face in the first movie, looked like a child solider to me and made me uncomfortable. This scene didn't really bother me either because I knew the actors true age. It wasn't a very well acted scene, it just felt awkward all round to me, but not because of the content. It was logical for the character.

Do you think this show will spark spin offs with the survivors? Seems too big a franchise to just stop when a good story is done.

Supposedly it's to be the Age of Heroes related. Which, if done right, might make for a good prequel... if done right. But yes, I thought Dunk and Egg would be the obvious one.

I didn't much care for it. When all said and done it was rather underwhelming I thought. Kinda disappointed.

Ahh man I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Then going back over all the things that went before. I thought for a moment he was going to kill everyone.

Oh no. I agree it was a very good episode. I too was on the edge of my seat at moments. I just don't like the way it played out. Felt cheap when it was over. Considering they were hyping it with the anticipation that major characters were going to die. Even the Night King himself felt a little cheap and meaningless in the end. I liked it less the second time I saw it.

I can't wait for the books to see how it really was supposed to end. But I do think they put in a few easter eggs for how the books end in the episode, of course in the books, the Night King will be killed by someone else.

I would maybe have been happier had he had, versus the lack of death that we got. But yes, about half way thru I said 'the only way it can end is with the NK death' because the odds were too high. Also I think the fact that they shot the same scene several times, filming different deaths, etcm so as not to spoil who would die, really hurt the editing. In one scene you see two favorites fall down with wights atop them. The next scene they are standing up with hardly any of them by them. Felt a little disjointed.

And seriously, their gameplan should have been lets all go down to the Winterfell armoury and equip ourselves with the same plotarmor that the leads have... then no one would have died. Sam should be dead. Breanne should be dead. Jaime should be dead (although that would make me unhappy)

And while I am at it. Greyworm should be dead. I was never a fan of this character, but damn, this was such a great episode for him. His actor did a wonderful job. He deserved a hero's death. I actually really come to like that character in just one episode.

EDIT: What I would LOVE LOVE LOVE and would redeem this episode is, as they took the Night's King from the book to twist and make the Night King, if, when Bran was warged at the end, he flew to the land of always winter and there he saw the show's version of the Night's Queen. And it turns out SHE was the driving force all along... sorta like she was with him in the book. But they don't have the episodes left for that.

I did find this a bit jarring as well actually. The danger was there but at the same time too many on the front line miraculously survived. When the wights were surging through there's no amount of swordsmanship that could have withstood that. I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack though for the overall effect. Hopefully the next three can really round off the story and do it justice. Cersei is in a much stronger position now.

Exactly, and that's when I was like 'holy shit they are going to do it' and then they didn't do it.

The one friggin moment that I thought was going to happen, and I am positive will happen in the books, and I was pissed it didn't happen in the show because I would have shat myself, is Jon stand there and Viserys blast him with his fire, only for Jon to survive thus demonstrating his Targ blood. I thought for SURE it was going to happen. That would have been so epic. I could have maybe be alright with the NKs killer had we got that moment.

Unless that moment happens when Dany and Jon are fighting over the throne and Jon takes a blast from Drogon. And Dany is like holy shit, they weren't lying.


EDIT: And I'm sorry but I will be really pissed if Arya kills both the night king and Cersei. I could see Cersei as they have been building up to that, but now, no. They can't do that.

Sorry @Spanky i can't read all your post as I'm avoiding potential book based spoilers. Seeing Tyrion has made it OK maybe he'll be the one who gets the honour of killing Cersei.

I was glad to see the dead coming alive in the crypt. Didn't exactly strike me as the best idea to hide in there. Also credit to Daenerys who didn't incinerate Jon when she had the chance, I was a little surprised.

I do have one complaint aside from the amount of people who miraculously pulled through. The quality of the video was really bad unfortunately. I know it's due to the nature of streaming but it's just too much to ask to wait another year for the blu ray.

There really is no book spoilers and the books aren't even to the point that Jon Snow gets resurrected yet. Stannis is still alive in the books.
Maybe the obvious implication of her knighting, that Brienne would die, is a red herring.

I liked this episode for being a good romp, but I unfortunately feel that the quality of writing has gone done as the show goes on. I kind of want it to be over so I can just buy the box set.

There was a ton of confusing time dilation going on in this episode too. I felt like the directing could have been better in places, because I got bored of watching Jamie and Brienne fighting up against a wall when it was clear they were gonna live.
 
Well, for an episode of television it was kinda epic. I must say.

But I agree that they did overdo it with the overwhelming bad odds and yet so many survived.
A common thing in these kind of battles that I've never liked.

Loved the very first part of the battle though.
When the Dothraki(?) army was basically swallowed by the wights.
That was unsettling. lol

I woke this morning and one thing popped into my head. A quote. And now I might just HATE GAME OF THRONES

This is the one quote I always found puzzling when talking about the prequel series they are working on: "to the true origin of the white walkers....it’s not the story we think we know."

They knew everyone wanted to know about the mythology and they purposefully left it blank and didn't address it so that it would entice viewers to watch the prequel. And then they will retcon the hell out of it making every little thing that happened in the show be really some big moment. I bet that's what is going to happen exactly.

I always found that quote add as I thought, well, we'll know the origins, and I didn't think about it after the episode. But damn. They trolled us!
