Gellar: New 'Buffy' movie is 'dumbest idea ever'

Do you think they'll at least metion that the movie was based on the tv show? Because the new generation - the Twilight generation if you will, don't really know Buffy. I ran into some youngers who can only speak of Twilight, and Gossip Girl, and Glee (like some of us do too, but it's more shows from the new genertation, which most of us here are from older generations). Most wouldn't even know about Buffy the show, and haven't even heard of Sarah Michelle Gellar. I'm pretty terrified of that.

You know when you think on it it's kind of funny how the actors are speaking against this Buffy movie considering how little support the show had in it's beginning back when it was their project that they believed in... and that did all right for itself in the end 😉

If anything they should be the ones with the open minds 😉 Though again, to me it mostly sounds as if they're expressing support for Joss rather than anything else and that I can understand because he was a big part of its success.

Except its not based on a tv show. Its based on a different movie.

Do they base it on the movie itself or the show? That would be really aweful then!

It won't be based on the show. None of the characters that we saw on the show will be so much as mentioned on this reboot. It will be going off the original movies premise.

In reality, it isn't Buffy, as we know it, at all.

Which is what makes calling it Buffy completely horrible
Much dumber is Sarah's implication that, just because it has already been a movie, there's no need to ever make a Buffy movie again.

Sarah has always said, even during production of the show, that the story of Buffy doesn't work as a movie; that her story needs time to be told, not a 1.5 hour window. All she's doing is not flip-flopping on that view, let alone doing it without Joss isn't a good move. That's not dumb, that's staying true to her stance.

Also, guys, guarenteed Joss was the first person asked to participate in a film adaption. Of course he would be asked, he passed but they had the legal right to go ahead without him and they are.

The cast and crew worked hard on that show and now someone is trying to rewrite it essentially. They don't have to like this idea especially if the person they credit as being the reason it was so great won't be involved. Of course their opinions aren't gonna be in favor of it, don't hate on 'em for that!

Theyre basically making a movie about a preppy blonde girl who kills vampires named Buffy. Thats all the original movie and the show had in common anyway. There will be no Giles, Angel, Sunnydale, Potentials etc. Thats why Im so apathetic to the reboot. Its not like theyre ruining what we have. If the movie blows, we can just ignore it like we do the first one and go back to our DVDs.

But people who know about the show but never watched it, will think the reboot is like the show (or the other way around, in fact), since not many know that the show was based on a (horrible) movie, and probably never watched it either to know the difference between the two (the original movie and the show). That what makes it even more horrible. Although no Potentials sounds good to me. Blah on all the rest.

I love the original movie. If I did not like the movie I would never have watched the series. Dont you think that this new movie will get fans for the series as well? Doesn't matter if its a different cast or different characters.

I mean, I never watched or cared about Firefly, but I heard about this Serenity movie then found out there was a series. And Serenity and Firefly are night and day different. The cast is the same but the whole atmosphere is different. I liked Serenity (enough to buy Firefly) until I saw Firefly now I think Serenity is subpar. But if not for the movie I would never have seen the series.

I agree about Serenity. I just watched FF this week and Serenity doesn't touch it.

If someone is going to make assumptions about a show theyve never bothered to watch, the quality of the movie isnt going to change that. It certainly isnt a valid reason NOT to reboot the idea.

An it's not even a reboot, it's a remake. There is a huge difference. They called the new Star Trek a reboot, but its not. It's a remake. This will be a remake as well.

The Kuzuis did such a wonderful job with the first movie that they deserve another opportunity to make yet another crappy movie. And when it sucks like the first, maybe Joss will make "Buffy: The Next Generation."

The reboot does NOT need to be made. The Kuzuis have made plenty of crappy movies in this past, and I predict this one will be no different.

It will hurt my beloved show's reputation. To me this is a reason not to make it. People who heard of the show but thought it sucked will think it does suck because of a bad reboot. I don't want that. To me that matters.

And there, again, you're assuming that the movie isn't going to be any good. There's just as good a chance that the movie will be a success as there is that it will bomb. Don't count your rotten eggs before they hatch.

Exactly what I was going to say

Right now it's 50/50. And if there is a chance it won't be any good, I'd rather not have it at all.

But why? Just because it is loosely based off the series? I mean there are tons of movies made that are average at best, but would still rather have new movies than none at all. Especially a new movie about vampires.

If its going to be "loosely" related to the show, they why have it related at all?

Answer:

1. Money
2. Capitalize on Joss's brilliance
3. Capitalize on Btvs (series) brilliance
4. Capitalize on the brilliance of the writers of Btvs (series)
5. Capitalize on the brilliance of the actors of Btvs (series)
6. Distance herself from the crappy movie she made 20 years ago.

I get upset when people call it a crappy movie too.. the movie was good. Series much better, but the movie wasnt crappy. It was 80's!!

As I said, there is a possibility the movie will be bad and that's how people will see the show because most know the show but not the movie. And that bothers me, as a Buffy fan. I don't want people who I tell them that I love Buffy will look at me even weirder. It might damage the image of the show, doesn't matter if it's actually based on the movie and not the show. The show is what people know, and the judging will be based on that.
And the fact that it will belong to the vampires trend is even worse, IMO. Because they're not trying to make a Buffy movie, they're trying to make a vampires movie. That's not what Buffy is about. It's more.

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree but if we didnt do things because it may turn out bad, nothing would be done
I don't care if the movie becomes the most celebrated cinematic achievement since Gone With the Wind. It will be bad if they call it Buffy the Vampire Slayer without the writers and actors who are responsible for bringing the original characters to life.

No matter how good or bad it turns out to be, it's doing a disservice to the original show because it isn't the original show.

And I agree with Chosen Enemy. I too worry that if it is a huge flop, people who have never seen the original series will no longer be interested in watching it. I wouldn't want to risk that. The fact that the show was such a huge "cult" hit, (whatever that means), always earned it a lot of interest from those who hadn't seen it, became curious, and got hooked. I mean, how many people here on the boards fall into that category? Heard it was good, heard it was something to see, saw a couple of episodes and became fans?

And you know what? Not everybody I meet knows what Buffy means to me. But a lot of the people I'm closest to do know, and they've never seen it. If they think the movie represents the show I love at all, (again whether it's good or bad), I'll be bummed out. It's my weakest argument, but hey.
