Girl trouble.

Well I'm 22 and have never had a girlfriend. I finally managed to tell a girl that I love her earlier this year by putting it in a letter because I'm too nervous to say stuff like that in person, but she just outright stopped talking to me at that point and I found out she's now dating a guy who is kinda a friend of mine, or used to be anyway. Was trying to decide on a method to kill myself a couple months ago that would be quick and have a low risk of failure, but now I'm taking antidepressants and just sort of existing here but not really thinking about death, but never completely happy either. I think it's hard if you're a guy lacking confidence. Go outside, see couples cuddling up, kissing, holding hands; stuff I've never had. Don't get the confidence, nothing will happen, ever.

It's hard for everyone, not just guys. First off I would try and loose that mentality, that you are the only one in the world without someone, that you are the only lonely person. I've been there, it brings nothing but misery. Look at what you have going for ya. It's so easy to see all the things you don't have and ignore what you do. Start liking who YOU are as a person, that should be your first battle. You WILL find someone when the time is right. Start loving what you have so you can go after what you want.

good advice
I dont understand the need to have a serious girl friend so young...
Im 22 and I have had 2, what I would call semi serious relationships (they were both in high school) and Im much happier now being single then I was when in a relationship. Enjoy your youth have fun! Why tie yourself down with a girlfriend? 😛
Buy some drinks for the girls at the pub or something - its a good conversation starter.Good luck 😉

Hello Cutie
It's the best conversations starter actually.. especially if it's in a non-sleasy way!
If it helps, I'm 21 and I didn't get into my first relationship til I was almost 19. And I was sick of being the only girl in my group of friends who hadn't had a boyfriend and any of the other stuff that goes with it. So I rushed out as soon as I got to university and started dating the first guy that showed an interest in me.
We didn't have anything in common, it turned out that he hated everything about me and everything that makes me me, and spent 9months trying to change me (and control me and lots of other bad stuff). Needless to say, looking back on it, I wish I'd have never dated him (or even met him).

By forcing myself into a relationship, things turned very bad. I wish now I'd have waited until it happened naturally- because when it does, you know that you have some kind of chance of making it work- you'll get on because you have things in common, or you both have the same attitude to life, or you just generally get along and are very comfortable around eachother. That's why there isn't any point in rushing it, as everyone else has said, but to let it happen naturally- trust me, the bond between you will be stronger because of it, and it WILL happen exactly when it's meant to.

Just don't go out and rush into something because you think it's what you're 'supposed' to do. It'll end badly, and you'll end up like me, regretting all that time in your life that you wasted with someone who wasn't worth a second of your time.

P.S. BotD = egomaniac! 'Hmm AL is right- I'm hearing that alot lately' LOL.

This is the EXACT thing I did too. Finished my first (hellish) year of college, and started dating the first loser I saw. Except I got pregnant, tried to stick it out for a year and a half (total) because of that, and ended up severely depressed because I was with the wrong person for me. But it's ok now, I've got a wonderful son who I wouldn't trade for the world, an awesome boyfriend who really is right for me and treats me well, and I'm happy.

I think I've learned that relationships can't be forced; I've tried more than once to do that and it just doesn't work. The one I'm in now, I didn't mean for it to happen really. It just did. I think the best advice I could give you is just don't worry about it. Go out, talk to some girls (easier said then done I know) and just try to make friends with them first. If something more develops out of it, then cool. If not, then hey, you got a new friend out of your efforts. Just be careful that you don't fall "in love" with your new friend just because she's paying attention to you, cause I've done that one too. Dating is extremely perilous, just don't rush into anything. There's a girl out there for you, you just haven't found her yet!

And Alister is about the most obnoxious, egocentric, very outspoken guy on that side of the Atlantic. And if he doesn't ever email me back, I will have to take a plane ride over there and KICK HIS BUTT! You hear me Alister????

I remember exactly that - gald you're good though

That's the problem with rushing into things. I didn't get pregnant (luckily I guess), but I ended up losing what little confidence about myself that I had because he was a total *insert any fitting rude word here*, who constantly told me I was fat and ugly (I was a part-time model back then as well, so it was ridiculous but I believed him, because I just wanted to be in a relationship). I wasn't allowed to meet his friends because I was too 'boyish' (Cuz I play/watch football and boxing, films where stuff blows up and play computer games), despite the fact I dress fairly feminine and would have embarassed him, and I was always told how I was just being kept around til something better came along- and as soon as I tried to be assertive, I was beaten.

And Watcher1986, you say it as though it's only guys that lack confidence. I used the little confidence I had to force myself to date the first idiot I met, who wrecked my life for the next 2years. I had no confidence at all afterwards, infact, I avoided men totally. I agree its really difficult to build up confidence when you don't have any, but you need to take tiny little baby steps towards it. And what I did find out was that if I faked confidence, slowly my real confidence started to match up. Even if I didn't feel attractive etc, I'd act as though I was the best thing ever, and other people react to that, and it starts to make things easier for you to deal with. It's a subconcious thing that other people pick up and avoid you if you're unconfident etc- sad but true, so the best way to start is to pretend, and see how differently people react to you- and it'll help your confidence to really start to build, naturally.

Honestly, if it's meant to happen, it'll happen naturally. But there are little things you can do to put yourself out there a bit more. Expand your interests- I mean, try doing things you've never thought about doing before. Even if it's just once and you decide you hate it, you'll still meet new people. Try going places you wouldn't normally go. It honestly does work.

See Dancing Man.

These two very attractive women, they have possibilities fo fantastic careers, they should have ALL the crap but they still went wrong because they rushed🙂

You just need to bide your time and it will happen.

Also, Randi and Cutie (Ohhh now thats a combination I love) do I get bonus points for the very attractive comment?

What is with these guys? My sister was married to a guy who called her fat and ugly, too, and she, also, was a part-time model! He also managed to convince her that she wanted to be an RN instead of an oncologist (mostly because it was less work, she wouldn't have to leave the state, and he was a selfish &%$&*$#). Then there's me, who IS fat and not-so-pretty, and I managed to land a sensitive, caring guy who wants me to excel and get my doctorate and "be all I can be." Why do pretty girls end up with jerks? It really makes no sense.

H
Hello Cutie
Because (I speak for myself and a few others here), either we have no confidence, or the only people that aren't too intimidated by us to come talk to us are the total jerks!
I agree Blondie.

OK, all you pretty girls that are with Jerks, give me a call - I'm sensitive🙂
I'm a romantic and I don't care what you look like.

You have the freedom to be who you want to be and I'll support all the decisions you make.

You only have to WANT to be with me, nothing else.

Though some cooking skills would be a bonus

I can cook pretty well, but I'm already married . . . so mneyah.

sooo...first you're saying all the pretty girls and then you don't care what they look like? Lol, of course not if they're already pretty
once again I sense that the pressure of a relationship takes away from the fun of dating. What is a date really? Just time spent getting to know an individual. Is it the eventual "possibility" of a good night kiss that makes people all weird during a date? Confidence what makes you need the confidence? Do you sit there and think to yourself oh no girl will want me? Want to talk to me, to kiss me let alone anything else. If so...your putting to much stock into actions. Can you talk easily enough to someone you arnt attracted to?

I guess I am just one of those people who never lacked the confidence to tell someone I was interested. I wasnt too afraid by rejection because I always just looked at it as oh well. I think too many people are afraid of rejection. Face it. EVERY person in this world has been rejected at some point in their life. Maybe not by a love interest but maybe a job or school or team. I look it like this its not a "I'm not good enough thng" its a I was the right person thing. Someone else is better suited for them...make sense?

your still rejected your still disappointed but you arent depressed and nocking yourself.

You say you go to Pubs...

Here's a challenge...

the next time you see a pretty girl there telll the barteder you would like to purchase her next beverage...have the bartender initiate the conversatation. He will either prepare her a drink and give it to her and point to the gentleman ( being you,) that purchased it, or go over and state that the gentleman would like to buy you a drink. You then pay attention to her body language she willmost likely peer over to you and mouth the words no thank you or smile, and possibly wave a thank you. Often times she may even venture over and thank you herself. At which event you say no problem and introduce yourself. Forget the courtship terms...just TALK....you might be surprised where just a TALK takes you. If you feel a connection you could always ask to call her sometime but your challenge sir, if you chose to accept it is simply to buy a girl a drink, gage a reaction and if a positive one engage into a conversational exchange. The more you learn just how to TALK to a girl the more confidence you will have. The more you are able to handle rejection in a positive light the more you will learn to not fear it. Hope that helps.

I will accept your challenge and I'll see if I have any sucess.

I Don't think I ever went out with the idea of getting a girlfriend. I just spoke to people in my circle of friends. Treated most folk with a bit of a courteous nature and was willing to be friendly to them.
If you are okay with folk, the word will get about.

Yeah definatly the best way. Thats what im going to try and do. Chat to girls nice and casual see where it goes might get a girlfriend might get a firend either way I win.

First of all, ignore the advice that tells you to be patient and wait for it. They are absolutely correct, but its useless advice because its a matter of perspective. Its like when you're a little kid and everyone is jumping over the hole in the ground. After you do it, you realize its 2 feet across, but before hand its the grand canyon.
What I'm noticing from the young guys that have posted is a lack of self confidence and getting a girlfriend may or may not help with that. My opinion is to start exercising and put on some muscle. Exercise is a great way to release endorphins into the bloodstream and start making you feel better immediately. The positive effects on your body and appearance will boost your self esteem and confidence.

Ive been considering building muscle, but dont wanna go gym so I dont really know what to do, to build muscles quickly and effectivly.

I definitely agree with RogueHunter, Do you exercise much? I wouldn't even say it would have to concentrate on Muscle but even just start your day with a half an hour run, it's funny how good you feel after it.

endorphins are awesome. There like a natural high.

Hello Cutie
Also, running is a great way to meet people- especially if you have a park nearby or something.
When I was young I had really poor eyesight, I was skinny and was allergic to everything. I had zero self esteem and all I wanted was a girlfriend. The summer I turned 15 my brother started showing me how to lift weights and the following September my life in school completely changed. I looked a little different but more because of the confidence I gained. I carried myself differently, and became less introverted.
Exercising has nothing but positive results.

Yeah, im going to start push ups and sit ups. Maybe buy new weights or something.

I have never enjoyed exercise or experienced the endorphin rush that people always claim comes with it, so I am a huge hypocrite when I agree that you should exercise. lol. When I was 19, my boyfriend used to hit the gym pretty heavily before he came to visit me at college... and it didn't just get him laid, it eventually got him married. lol. Of course, he doesn't exercise anymore and no longer looks like he did when he was 20, but still. I appreciated the extra effort at the time. It made me feel really special. I liked that he worked so hard to impress me. And I won't lie; I was impressed. Hubby had some guns. And long, curly hair. And very nice leather pants… sigh…. Heck, it was a women's college, so hubby even had a bona fide fan club (with a president and everything). I'm just saying. I was totally afraid of commitment of any sort, and my hubby got me to marry him. Taking a page from his book and hitting the gym so as to look sexy in leather pants couldn't hurt. I love him. He’s the best. Oooh – and he had an interview today, so he wore a smooth looking pinstripe suit jacket… Okay. I will stop the husband swoonage. Sorry. I get sidetracked with that sometimes.

I’m telling you about my hubby for two reasons: First, I like to get all swoony and brag about the hubby; and second, because, before me, he only had one girlfriend. He wasn’t all that confident in his appearance (he still isn’t). He wasn’t all that confident in his dating or social skills, either. But he still got the girl. Why? Well, as much as I liked those guns of his, that wasn’t why he got the girl. He got the girl because he was my best friend. He still is. If you want a nice, stable, loving relationship, then you need to meet girls who have similar interests and you need to cultivate friendships with those girls. Treat and view them as friends and equals, not as prizes to be won or goals to be achieved. I treated guys like goals and prizes and sometimes worse for a long time, but I never had a functional, meaningful, and lasting relationship until the hubby came along. I knew I could *get* any man any time, but I wasn’t even interested in keeping one. “Love ‘em and leave ‘em,” I said, even when one or two managed to stick around long past my usual cutoff point. My hubby showed me a different, more fulfilling way to approach the opposite sex. Real relationships aren’t about having certain experiences by a certain cutoff date. They’re not about using each other. Real relationships are about enjoying one another’s company and caring enough to be there through thick and thin. You can’t force that. It takes time to develop. If you’re looking for a chick to pick up at a bar, that’s one thing. It’s an entirely valid and also entirely different ball of wax. If you’re looking for the real thing, though, you just can’t force it.

You can’t force the sex thing, either. If you have that real sort of bond, the sex stuff all works itself out, anyway. Sex is no big thing. I don’t see why people get all worked up about it. Don’t let yourself fall into that trap. This is a kid-friendly site, so I’m not gonna be all graphic. Instead, I’ll just say it’s an instinct. It’s the biological imperative at work. You can do it. Pretty much everyone can. You just do what feels good. Simple as that. When you already have that close, loving relationship in place, the sex part is a lot easier. Both partners are able to communicate needs and wants without (or with a minimum of) embarrassment, which leads to both partners having those needs and wants fulfilled. That leads to less performance anxiety and fewer self-confidence issues and an all around more positive experience for everyone involved. Really. Just don’t worry about that. Know how to be safe when the time comes, and then just let nature take its course on that one. It’s not something that you can really force or put a deadline on, either.

That said, if you still think performance anxiety is going to bother you when you do find someone about whom you truly care, then you might consider an educational fling with a trusted, experienced, and open-minded friend. It will probably be a very awkward and sort of mechanical experience, but at least you’ll have that hurdle out of the way and can then focus on the relationship instead of on the sex. Seriously, though, I wouldn’t worry about this part. If a girl really likes you, she’s not going to care that you’re a virgin. She might even find it sweet or refreshing. She might even think it’s totally cool that she gets to be your first. That’s not just a guy thing. We chicks sort of dig the idea of claiming territory, too. So really, don’t worry. The vast majority of the population dates, has sex, and even marries. I’m sure you’ll be no different.

I guess this is my long-winded way of saying the same thing everyone else has said: don’t worry; it’ll all work itself out.

Hope I helped.
