I'm just curious, since this is a BtVS forum, how many of you actually consider BtVS to be your favorite show. If it's not your favorite, how does it rate in comparison to your favorite and which show is your favorite?

Not sure if I have a favourite show. I have a favourite band - Pulp, the band I discovered when I was 12.

TV I feel like I have multiple shows that could be my favourite: Buffy, Angel, Breaking Bad, Red Dwarf, Prisoner Cell Block H (pure nostalgia I'm sure), Firefly probably would be a contender if it had run longer, Oz, Spaced, Dexter, Big Brother (no really), Being Human, The Good Wife, Misfits, Desperate Housewives... That's a ridiculously long list, I know. But I honestly can't pick a definite favourite out of them.

Pulp karma :)
I always have a special place in my heart for Buffy, but there are shows I enjoy more, and there are shows I think are better. Game of Thrones is my favorite show of all time, primarily because the story is just SO engrossing and the characters are so deep, throughout the entire cast. Buffy herself is one of my all time favorites, but the rest of the cast doesn't captivate me. Plus, I find Robb Stark, Ned Stark and Jon Snow to be just phenomenal characters, on another level for almost every other show.

I like Angel the Series more than BTVS. I find the cast a lot more complex and I find the characters grow MUCH more, and much better, than their BTVS counterparts. By the end of the series all of the characters are so layered and so important to one another and the show at large. As much as I love Buffy, I can't say that about BTVS. Angel is one of my all time fictional characters and, in my humble opinion, one of the best leads in television history.

I think Veronica Mars is a better written show than Buffy, but as it only went three seasons I can't say I "like" it more. Veronica is probably my all time favorite female character (it's funny. I never, not in a million years, thought I would ever discover a character I had a bigger crush on than Buffy...and then I saw Veronica Mars lol), and every episode just has me fully drawn in.

I would say I like LOST just as much as I do BTVS, and I feel it has a stronger character base. The first season of LOST is, with the possible exception of S1 of GOT, my all time favorite T.V. season. Buffy and Angel are my all time favorite T.V. couple, but Jack and Kate are pretty close.

However, all that aside, BTVS and Angel are the only shows I actively participate in fandom wise. I've probably seen the two of them more than any other show I watch. And I find the first three seasons of Buffy to be some of the best T.V. I've ever seen. It's just the final four seasons I'm not as into (even though I still very much enjoy it). I would list Angel, Spike and Buffy as three of my favorites.

For me, a favourite TV show is one that entertains you. It's a show you watch to escape, to be captivated and just enjoy. Using my own definition, I would say my favourite show is a tie between The West Wing and Battlestar Galactica. These shows thrilled me. They still thrill me. I glean nothing but pure enjoyment out of these shows. I'll never stop rewatching and rediscovering them.

The Buffyverse is a totally different animal for me. Where as my other shows entertain me, the Buffyverse pisses me off and antagonises me. The Buffyverse pisses me off so much I took to the internet to find other people to share my ravings with. This show occupies space in my mind that no other show every has or will. The Buffyverse has brought into my life some of the best friendships I've ever had. I've learned more about feminism, tolerance, articulation, patience and compassion from this show and its fandom than college could ever have taught me . It's my raisin d'etre in fandom. The Buffyverse is a friend to me. An annoying, disappointing, batshit crazy yet totally endearing, lifelong friend.

I have no desire to study or dissect my other shows, Buffy is the only one I tear apart to see what makes it tick.

I don't know what you call that, but that's what BTVS and ATS are to me.

Kean, I think you nailed the reason why the verse is so popular years after the show ending. For me, the show doesn't necessarily piss me off, but it sort of consume my life in a way that no other show can. It might not be my favorite, but it's different from every other shows that I've seen in the sense that it takes up the biggest chunk in my life out of any shows, and the friend comparison is pretty accurate. I think the verse is exactly that to a lot of people, we might see it differently, but I totally get what you mean when saying:

I don't know what you call that, but that's what BTVS and ATS are to me.

I consider it one of my two favorite shows, the other one being Firefly. I think I've watched BTVS about four times now and it was awesome every time. I'm actually trying to not watch it at the moment and forget as much as possible about the show, so it's... I don't know... more surprising the next time.

Yah without a doubt. I grew up with Buffy as a kid and still watch it all the time because it still makes me laugh. I still find the entire 'Verse interesting to discuss and theorize about, even though aside from Buffy Boards I have no one to do that with. I'll probably end up playing the show for my kids one day because its just that awesome.

It's very strange. I think there are a lot of shows that are better acted, have better stories and are way more satisfying to watch, but I care about Buffy in a way that no other work of fiction has ever come close to replicating. Maybe it's because Angel and Buffy are my favourite characters ever? Whatever it is, this verse provokes a reaction out of me, good or bad, that nothing else can.

This!
It'll always be my favorite show. Supernatural is a very close second and Gilmore Girls a close third, but BTVS is my all-time favorite.

I wouldn't be getting a tattoo of it if it wasn't 😉

I only ever watched the first episode of Supernatural. The opening scene with the woman on the ceiling I just thought 'this is too silly'. I should give it a second chance - there's a lot of shows I love where I didn't rate the first episode.

I've tried Supernatural a couple of times. Honestly, I don't get the love! Besides the good-looking actors of course. It's certainly not Buffy/Whedon.

Maybe you should try again, for me this is really good writing and mythology, great characters, sense of humour... I love it!
Nothing ever, in the history of ever, will come close to being my favorite TV series other than Buffy. That's just the bottom line. Like how is it that I'm still into the fandom 12 years after my initiation into the Whedonverse? Sure, the Breaking Bad's of the world win in terms of plotting, writing, and overall sophistication, but nothing has captured my heart and imagination the way Buffy did. And I believe nothing ever will.

It's up there in my top 5!!

It's a show that will always be in my heart for many reasons, so will always be in the top 5 but I prefer Angel more! I find Angel darker and more grown up from the start. Probably because of watching Buffy as an adult, I did not grow up with Buffy, so to speak.

It also depends on what shows I am watching at the time.

My favourite? No. Not even my favourite Whedon show. That might be like the 30th time I've said that on the boards. Sorry for repeating myself. I could try and write something clever but it wouldn't come close to what Kean said. Except that Buffy and Angel is not my favourite characters. Oh, and I'll put The West Wing at number one and (new) BSG somewhere in my top 10 I think.

The show can be silly that way and silly in other ways too. Ways I definitely prefer. I would recomend you to watch it. For my own personal taste, which might be very different from yours, the show really gets to my liking somewhere along in season 2. I watched the show for the wrong reason. I went along for the ride for the funny episodes.

I'm halfway through season one of The West Wing. It's alright. Not sure what people love about it so much. The first few episodes seemed like they were trying too hard with the single-shot scenes and rapid fire dialogue. It's calmed down since then and I'm enjoying it more. But still not loving it.

Sounds like I'm attacking all your favourite shows, Washburne. Sorry about that... Although I do have MAJOR problems with the last season of Battlestar! 😉

He he. It's fine. No matter what you think of The West Wing I hope you finish the first season. If you don't like it by then more than fair enough. No show is for everyone. Just happy if people give it a chance instead of just taking for granted that it's not for them. No show is perfect. Believe me, I don't have to look hard to find things I don't like in my favourite shows. What makes a great show to me is when I still get the warm fuzzy feelings about it in general. Now I'm getting way off topic but I've watched the first season of Sons of Anarchy, Breaking bad And Six feet under and I don't miss watching any of them at all. I gave The Walking dead three episodes I think but only because people said it was enough to know if you liked it or not. Guess I didn't. I did watch all of Lost but have no desire what so ever to watch it again like I do with many shows. That's personal taste for you.

Not sure why I say "warm fuzzy feelings". I seem to do that lately.

Give Twin Peaks a try, but you need to wait right till the end, trust me, when it's not being a soap opera, it's surreally horrifying!
I dont think I can consider it my favourite show, but I'm not sure, becasue, I think there are shows that are better (West Wing/30 Rock/Firefly are just some for me), although it was my favorite at one time.

But whats strange is there is no other show that I want to talk about to the exstent I talk about BtVS. Other then Twitter venting for other shows, I haven't joined a forum to discuss any others show, or if I have I haven't stayed active over a week, but no other show makes me want to discuss it or study it for all the possible meanings for something.

Supernatural is the example of that for me, I love Supernatural, but I dont want to discuss is. The fandom is there, there are loads of places to discuss the show, I just dont feel the need to.

Something about Buffy still has me talking about it after all this time, so while I prefer other shows it feels a bit weird to say it's not my favorite show.

I have no desire to study or dissect my other shows, Buffy is the only one I tear apart to see what makes it tick.

I just wanted to quote this, cuz it's such a great line!

I just bought Sons of Anarchy season 1 preowned. Now I'm thinking I'll probably enjoy it! (Although apparently season one isn't a great start). I only bought it because Stephen King is in season 2.
