I don't like Tillow...

I forgot to add, the same time Giles was saying WIllow shouldn't be casting magic because her emotions were messed up he was talking with Buffy about how Willow was recovering well, to the point Spike had to call them on how wrong they were, and waiting for her to cast a truth spell.
Giles let down Willow by not guiding her enough on her journey with magic. Considering he's directly seen the signs (or one can assume later told about it, like the de-lusting spell in s3) that Willow misuses magic.

And Giles has had personal experience as to just what happens when you misuse magic.
* She takes a 14 year old to a magic drug dealer in his almost unplottable drug den. Who takes a kid to a crack house? Even most junkies dont do that.
Completely forgot about this omg. I genuinely cannot believe Willow's behavior with Dawn. Almost got a teenage girl killed multiple times.

If I were Buffy I wouldn't allow Willow near my sister or the house ever again!

the stuff they came up with in the comics shows he could have told her about his great aunts to show her that magic could help turn you into a shitty person without making you outright evil

We only wish we'd seen him guide her in the series..

Always thought Buffy should have kicked her out then and there. I draw the line at people putting children in jeopardy. They don"t belong in society and definitely not my home or near any child in my care.

Child services could have taken Dawn away permanently for what Willow did. Sadly, Buffy would have been the one deemed unfit, just like a parent with a spouse who hurt their child. She would not have been able to prove she did not know Willow was dangerous. Just them *seeing* Spike was a red flag and he did nothing. The herbs found by the child services werent illegal but they were a source of suspicion. By contrast, Willow actually broke Dawn's wrist in a car accident in a totaled stolen car in a bad part of town. (The accident could easily have had fatalities.) They were lucky not to be investigated.

Had they seen Willow at the scene, EMTs would have deemed her mentally altered and suspected possible drug use even if the police could not prove it. Their presence in a bad neighborhood would definitely lead police to suspect drug seeking by Willow.

Not all drugs come up on a tox screen. Behavior and the accident matter. Maybe reckless driving instead of drunk driving...

Addicts may not be responsible for becoming addicts but they are fully accountble for ALL the consequences of their actions under the influence. Especially when they choose to use drugs (or in this case to do black magic)
A drunk driver can't say "mum gave me a drink when i was 10 and so she is to blame that i killed someone with my car."

I actually knew a drunk who NEVER drove or owned a car, so they could not be in a position kill someone while driving drunk. They eventually got sober.

Only the addict can chose to get help. Only they can chose to stop.

No one else can be blamed at all unless someone forces drugs on them. (GHB or Amy dosing Willow.)

After stopping, they owe their victms full restitution and amends. Stopping is necessary but insuffient.

wonder how they would have explained it if they tested her for alcohol or drugs when it came back negative
Comments made in season 3 make it clear Giles is consistently warning Willow off.

Giles cautioned Willow against being overly ambitious and restricted some of the darker/more dangerous texts, but he didn't forbid her from doing magic except for the times he wanted her to do magic', for the most part he let it be known that he disapproved and left it at that.
Not that Willow took any of his disapproval seriously, besides at this stage she's doing smoke spells and minor telekinesis, having had the wherewithal not to try necromacy (again) when it goes wrong or the time/dimensional stuff with Anya.
It's only when she's fully away from anything approaching supervision- not to mention being a legal adult- she she starts going off the rails.

Oz's comments in Fear, Itself show his general respons

Oz is super-supportive and promises to back her decisions whatever, he just says to be careful because of his own fears of losing control.

The only times she intentionally ignored the safety of others was in Smashed and Wrecked which I have always felt were OOC

You forgot all the times she got spells wrong, other people got hurt, and nobody held her to account so she did them again the next year. So, nope, she doesn't hold herself to any kind of magical- casting safety standard un til S7 when she's worried about losing control.

is someone expecting a lot of a person while denying them the tools to fulfill those things.

Holding somebody to a consistent moral standard whilst also advising caution but also not demanding that Willow push herself and do difficult spells? None of that is contradictory, its all rather complimentary, and incredibly mild given what Willow's friends actually do.
I mean, they forgive Willow trying to kill them multiple times and murder the world in a matter of...days of seeing her again.
Yeah, they're really holding her unreasonably accountable...

Most fans have actually encouraged Buffy to collect from her enemies, but also, do you really think it's a good idea to just leave a sword lying around on the ground?

Or how about maybe bring a magical weapon to the Magic Box where stuff like that can be stored safely? Bare minimum competence is absent in S6.

I took it to mean that Giles could perform the (relatively simple) spell, or at least they would cast it together. Giles says that Willow shouldn't be casting 'alone' right now because of unfocused energy. Plus the 'thy will be done' spell is way more powerful than a truth spell

Scoobies were very supportive. I think it's because they became desensitized by Willow's bad behavior. It took a while for her to change.

Yeah, I think the term might be 'enabled' actually. They weren't nearly hard enough on her.
