I think I might have aspergers

I think we can all say that no one here knows the exact extent of someone elses experiences or knowledge of anything!

As always, we ask of you all to treat each other with respect, and if you feel yourself getting perhaps a bit too heated in an argument it is better to step away from the keyboard and cool off before you post something heated. The field of mental illness can be especially intricate, but also especially hurtful, to all parties involved, during a discussion like this. Please remember that there is an individual, whom you may injure, reading your words.

It should also be recognized that different countries may have different health care systems and therefore different methods or eases with which they medicate or treat their patients.

Blaze, you have no idea about true dark mental illness.

If you want the data - just google it. Or watch one of the many documentaries, or do some further study on the subject if you are that interested.

I post as someone who knows a lot about mental illness, both from working in the field and being diagnosed myself.

I am not going to get into an argument.

It is extremely easy to get diagnosed and medicated, and medication is NOT a last resort. Just look at the abuse of benzodiazipines.

Do what you wish with my opinion. Perhaps before getting diagnosed, have a look at a psyc forum.

This is going to be my last post, as Taake mentioned, I don't want to get overly emotional and lose my objectivity or be hurtful in any way towards you. All I wanted to say is that you do not no me, and you do not know about my mental state. I don't mind being told those things, I have a thick skin and I've been dealing with this all my life, but just please in the future refrain from telling someone over the internet that they aren't sick. It's a big presumption to make that could really, really affect someone's life down the life. And I already know I have it good compared to other, but comparing one mental's illness to another has never done any good to anyone. We need to support each other, not attack each other.

@bespangeled, thank you for the kind words. Indeed I just wanted to bring in my own perspective from experience, in the hope to maybe help someone. Sorry to everyone, I didn't mean to take away from the aim of the thread. @Xin Rong, in the end it's your decision and we should all support it. Do what feels best for you.

Dude you have no idea how much experience I have in this matter.... And I'll tell ya now I have messages supporting my standpoint, just no one can be bothered with you're over the top, over PC novel replies.

I have worked with people with autism for over 15 years now. Generally if it is not picked up in childhood, and the person has not had issue, it will not be diagnosed in adult hood unless it is affecting day to day life (it is much more than behavioural problems). Even if it is, what treatment do you want? The reason you get diagnosed is to receive treatment. Why on earth would you get a diagnosis if not seeking treatment? That is on your file.

I have a severe OCD, I have been hospitalised more times than I can count. I know first hand how much that diagnosis has hindered me in life. I have lost friends, jobs, homes and almost my life on more than one occasion. Recently I ended up in ER as for 18 months the doctors would not believe pain due to my diagnosis... well I almost couldnt have children because the pain was a real issue, but no one believes you when you're mentally ill.

I base the following statement from being a long time member of a variety of psyc forums - many who go in for an autism diagnosis come out with a depression/anxiety diagnosis. And while the stigma is terrible, it is there! And you yourself will never change that.

Therapy, I recommend to anyone.

I really think I have matured from this site. I want to say to many of you to go out and work in the field, go get some real life experience, but I will be met with these 20'somethings who think they know how the world works.... sorely mythtaken.

Diagnosing people online and then insulting them if they believe they know themselves better than you, a complete stranger, does?

What do you mean? They thought you were just being compulsive and made the pain up, or that you were causing it yourself due to your diagnosis?

I didnt diagnose anyone. I just warned against getting a diagnosis, you can participate in therapy without a diagnosis. A diagnosis is hard to undo.

I use the age bracket more to highlight lack of experience.

([HASHTAG]#sorrynotsorry[/HASHTAG] mods, I know you are laughing)

You guys, let's all take a minute and regroup before continueing down this path. Everyone here has made valid points about metal illness and just because it may not be true for you in your own personal experience doesn't mean it isn't valid.

Let's get back to the topic and offer advice to XinRong about what they can do about the lack of support they are receiving.

Since @Blaze told you she suffers from depression you're either saying it isn't a dark mental illness or she doesn't have it. I just assumed you had diagnosed her but I guess you could be completely dismissing depression as a mental illness.

I only posted to show some support for the person you were throwing insults at so I'll bow out now.

Apologies @Xin Rong for distracting from the thread and I hope you get the answers you're looking for soon.

Whatever your life experience has been, the ability to speak of it in a way that encourages listening is paramount. When your first impulse is to attack and belittle, it doesn't really incur much respect. My own family includes schizo-affective disorder, autism, DID, plus the more common depression anxiety, OCD, and PTSD.

@Xin Rong - I apologize for being one of the people who betrayed your trust by participating in this argument. You are on your own path, and only you can determine what works best for you. I know from personal experience that it's confusing and difficult. I hope this remains a safe place for you to speak up. Thank you for your trust - it means a lot. If you ever want to message me, I'm here!

Okay, that's enough. Any more posts attacking each other will be met with at the very least being kicked from the thread. Come on, people. The mods have asked you twice. Now it's three. There's no reason for this.

bespangeled,
I think I see what your aim is. The last paragraph that starts @Xing Rong is all that is needed.

Diagnosing people online and then insulting them if they believe they know themselves better than you, a complete stranger, does?
You have a good point there, we don't know anything about other BBer's lives, except what they choose to share.

Therefore, if someone has been diagnosed with something and agrees with the given diagnosis, I will go with what he/she says because he/she knows themselves better than anyone they know in RL, let alone the Internet.

Sadly, many people have bad experiences when it comes to getting a diagnosis 🙁 (which might be from where @OccaQuokka is coming from).

Back to topic:
I hope that @Xin Rong will find peace with himself and understand himself better, improving his quality of life 🙂

Hopefully this won't continue with the previous trend of debate, but as you all gave me so much avice, I felt like updating people who may want to know what's occuring. I'm in stage 2 of 4 of a diagnosis, I've broken up with my partner as a result of her lack of support in this area and generally. I'm obviously devastated but progressing

I admire your bravery - progressing can be so hard. I'm a reiki master so if ever you need reiki, just ask and it will be there.

Keeping you in my thoughts :)
Just got the verdict, I'm officially on the autistic spectrum, still awaiting the full report to inform me about the ins and outs. I'm very confused, I expected it, but still struggling to process... I technically have a disability whereas I just think I'm different... binge watching Big Bang to console myself, watched 3 seasons in 2 days

Proud of you for going through what you thought was the right thing to do :) Binge watching shows is always a good destresser!
I just struggle seeing it as a disability, I think it's others who are wrong for being illogical?

Hope you don't mind me butting in, but just because it might be called a disability doesn't mean you have to see it that way. See it however you want to, hopefully a diagnosis is a source of relief that what you've felt for a long time is justified 🙂

Thanks, I see it as a validation
It's classed as such, same as mine, but it just gives a broad name to what you may be experiencing. It does not define who you are or change who you are. It's how you deal with that knowledge that counts. Make it positive... learn, develop, help others ... just remember you can change your outlook on life armed with knowledge and support. hugs 🙂
