Should Gay Marriage be Legal?

Well it seems to me that there is too much emphasis right now on homosexual rights the same way that there was in the 70's with the NAACP. I am not against gay or lesbian rights but I really think the problem is that no one is concerned with human rights. Why must there always be catagories that separate people? I realize that most will argue that because of our antiquated laws that this is the reason for the emphasis and separation. If everyone were treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation then there wouldnt be the need for gay/lesbian rights. I have no problem with homosexual marriages, people are the same no matter of race , color, creed or sex.

Ok , I had to come back and place a second reply. I stand behind my first one but I need to add a few things. I think the biggest problem today is not so much the issue of gay/lesbian marriages, but the actual sanctity of marriage. Part of the problem is that many do not take this union seriously. There should be tougher rules to get married to make sure that the couple understands what this union is all about. Not just the issue of Gay/lesbian rights to marriage but everyones right to marriage. Maybe there should be a new thread to discuss marriage/divorce for everyone.

Of course there shouldn't be such a thing like gay rights or women right.. But only human rights.. But we can deal with that when all humans have the same right, but that's not the case now..

I think maybe gay people even take marriage more serious than some heterosexuals might.. Since it's a lot more difficult to get married if you're homosexual.. (Ok, that's just a thought..)

Great thoughts!!!

I think gays should be exactly equal to straights. If they can't marry, whose to say a black person can't marry a white person? Or a chinese person can't marry a german? Ridiculous right? And about the religion issue...if their god doesn't want them to marry, I say dump that god.

Yes, and what about people with different eyecolors? Can they really be allowed to get married..?

Gotta say not sure.

I'm a Catholic, so I believe that marriage has to between 2 people of the opposite sex, but gay couples do deserve more rights.

Maybe if they didn't call it marriage...

What i think is the most important thing is if the two people love each other, and i'm not toaly sure on this but not all marriages under all religins(not puting in christian) consider it to being bad, like many branches of paganism don't belive that people that are gay are evil

But if gay marriage is legally allowed, is it right that the church can decide not to allow it..? And, as I said, all churches aren't against that, so it's like some priests that don't like it or what.. can they make that decision..?

Of course churches can decide not to allow it. They follow teachings and the rules stick. But all religions are different. It would depend on what religion and how orthodox it is.

For instance. I'm Roman Catholic. I am divorced. The Roman Catholic church says I can not get remarried in a RC church.

Well whoopdee doo. So I go to a Justice of the Peace. I certainly don't expect the Church to go back on thousands of years of teachings and say it's ok for me to get remarried in their church.

As for same-sex marriages - I am ALL FOR IT. It is legal here in Canada, and the Supreme Court just granted a decision allowing the FIRST same-sex divorce.

Work Benefits plans here cover common-law AND same-sex marriages/spouses (the same sex couple doesn't even have to be married, they can be living common-law).

I just think, how would I feel if someone told me I couldn't marry the man I loved. I'd go crazy. Well what if it was a woman. Same thing. Nobody has the right to tell another human who they can and can't love. And I think as a couple, everyone should be entitled to the same rights. A church wedding does not a marriage make.

One of the things I like about Canada is it's stance on human rights

Haha. Ok, sure, that would be great..

I think it just is the distinction between a church wedding by a priest and a wedding by some other officient. Both can be religious, but by some religious dogma, a gay couple can't be married in a church. Still doesn't mean they can't be joined in a legal union though (or that they shouldn't).

PS - I freaking LOVE your user title 😀 It's one of my fave movies!!! 🙂

But sometimes gay couples are allowed to get married in a church, so.. Well not married married, but.. aww.. almost. (This thing annoys me, there are no real rules only almost-rules..)

Lol thanks, I love it too, a great movie (I've been listening to the music all day, that's why the user title)

I said yes. Homosexual people are people too and should have the same rights as everyone else. The government should stop worrying about such little problems like who's getting married and thinking about our brave soldiers fighting to keep us safe in Iraq.

not to be picky or anything, but its not Just homosexuals who want to get married to someone of the same gender. 😉

but they should, the gov't i mean, worry more about those big things, and...they seem to forget seperation of church and state when it behoves them (as well as other things, but...that's something else), sides just cuz Some ppl have something against it doesn't mean its wrong, or that it shouldn't be allowed. lotsa ppl have stuff 'gainst drinking. as far as i know thats legal. and twas hell when it wasn't.

and..as for the evil thing, (which im not saying anyone here said, just...i hear it other places. well..usually not so nicely phrased) left handedness used to be evil too. things change.
course, looking at that, its kinda gotten worse cuz back in like the WAY olden days, like...think achilles' time, it didn't use to be a big thing. now...its..not as big as it was..but..still...

it depends on what religion you are and what they believe...from what I know (which isnt everything or all that very much) there's usually not that much difference in christian churches. all believe in jesus and such, but..the way they do things and what they allow is diff. i think the episcopalians May unite gays, but..i can't remember, its been awhile. i know they've a gay bishop but..other than that.

i know there are some ppl that are ok with the idea, just..not the uniony things being called marriage..and..that...sorta..but..hm...that's a tricky thing, the wording of it, to try and anger fewer ppl, cuz no matter What you do, you will anger someone. which..is sad. but..its the way it is.

i'm not sure this post had a point. sorries.

lol, keeping you safe..?
Ok, I won't start..

Anyway, they're already allowed to be joined in some sort of unity not called marriage, the problem is that it isn't called marriage. That it isn't the same as the marriage for people of different sexes.. Why change it to something a little little better and pretend that's the end of the problem..? The problem is that all people don't have the same rights, giving everyone almost the same rights but calling it something else.. Well, there's just no reason is there..?

I agree. Being homosexual myself I think people should have the right to marry each other no matter gender, race, religion, size, shape or form. Really, I think it all comes down to one thing: True love, happiness, and respect between two individuals. {ok, was that more than one thing?} But anyways. It's all too complicated. The government and church don't approve, so it must be right. The world is screwy...
