It disgusts me when people compare

Aw, they did? That sucks. I was really, legitimately interested to see a new take on it. Just because Joss isn't doing it, doesn't mean it CAN'T be good. It could've been a really well done, truly new and interesting direction. And we missed out on it because a bunch of whiny, obsessive fans have to throw a fit.

It was based on the 1992 movie, I agree with those fans why waste money on a "milking for money" movie

1): No Joss Whedon
2): No Original Cast

NOT WATCHING! I mean for Christ Sake they were going to have Heather Morris & Leighton Meester play Buffy two of the worst actresses of TV history

I agree. I would have seen it. I don't think it would have affected the TV show whatsoever. At least, not in a negative way. It may have even compelled more people to watch the show.

We can't know for certain that it would've been bad.

And I heard Candice Accolla and Heather Morris were being considered.

I wouldn't want a movie without Joss, but if they did go ahead with it, I would watch it on principle. We don't know for certain that it would be bad, but chances are, they'd mess it up. And it's not just the fans panning it--SMG and some other of the actors (can't remember who...) opposed it as well.

Pretty harsh words. I haven't watched any of the shows you mention besides Btvs and Angel. I've heard that True Blood have some very questionable storylines as far as women's rights goes though, but even at that, I'm not disgusted that people watch it. People enjoy different things, let's just leave it at that. 🙂

I was against watching all three of those shows and hated when people compared them to Buffy, not because I think nothing can be better then Buffy but I thought the other shows were terrible. But then I watched them.

True Blood is ok I'm not a huge fan of it I can see the similarities to Buffy but I dont think its that much like Buffy.

The Vampire Diares is a really good show though and I was so convinced I would hate it. But I think comparing TVD and Btvs is a fair comparison because there are a lot of similarities especially when it comes to the couples stelena/bangel delena/spuffy steroline/cangel its not just that theyre both about vampires.

But twilight I have seen the movies and read the books and I still hate when people compare it to Buffy. Its nothing like Buffy. I dont like the way they portray vampires, that they can walk in the sun and sparkle...Or how they have to be ripped apart to die -_- And then theres Bella herself who no offense to anyone that likes Twilight but I think its insulting to compare Bella to Buffy. Because Buffy is this strong amazing role model and Bella is a weak whining child that is willing to kill herself to be with the man she loves.

Two epic vampire shows like Buffy & Angel to trash like True Blood, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries. It's such a sin imho.

I'm like BTVS & Ats slay those trash wannabes

Haha, I totally love and agree with this post.

Twilight and Vampire Diaries have nothing in common with BtVS and AtS, agreed. That's like saying that Dracula is like Moonlight because there are vampires in ech show, or like saying BSG is llike Star Trek because they're both et in space and the future. You can not lump al fantasy or all science fiction in the same category. Unfortunately, people catch on that two shows have perhaps vaugely similar themes...and they just run wild with it, hence the BTVS/Twilight comparisons.

I must say though I'm truly fascinated by how many people on here describe TVD as a really good show...I gave it a few chances, and was bored silly. The only scenes I found remotely interesting involved Damon/Elena - but not enough to keep watching. Damon is abrasive, and Elena irritates me. I'm so sick of the tired old love triangle. It works in some fiction, but it just doesn't do it for me in modern television.

Never seen True Blood or Vampire Diaries....I don't really care to, reminds me too much of Twilight. Which I abhor with the utmost passion.

How anyone could compare Twilight to the greatness that is Buffy needs to have their head checked.

If Joss had been okay with it, I think I would have too. Cranky that they couldn't use that money to write about a new slayer and add to the Buffyuniverse instead of repeating it, but a bit eager to see what the would come up with.

But now, I'm fine with joining the actors and whine and "throw a fit". I know that Joss signed away his right to decide if a movie would be made or not(and if he hadn't, maybe we wouldn't have had the TV show) but I still feel that they're playing with something that doesn't belong to them.

So I'm glad that the movie probably won't happen.

Both are in space yes but are you sure about the future? Do they ever say when it takes place? Plus a certain spoiler...

People got different taste and that goes for Buffy fans as well. We're as likely to be in total agreement about what shows are good as agreeing which of Bangel and Spuffy is the best relationship...

I totally agree with the different tastes and being in agreement thing. :)
Just out of curiosity, how does the Anita Blake series compare to Buffy? Just thought it be alright to add another franchise to the discussion.

I don't know if I'm just lucky but I have rarely, if ever, experienced a real comparison between Buffy and Twilight, TVD, True Blood etc. I don't feel its as prolific as other people seem to think it is but that might just be because I'm not around people/places/fandoms where it happens.

As for the trash thing, I'm with the others. I watched one episode of True Blood and didn't watch any more. I wouldn't say it was trash though, just not my thing. And comparisons to Buffy didn't even cross my mind. Similarly, I've never read Twilight or seen the movies and as much as I make jokey comments about it to my friends, I wouldn't call it trash because it's obviously got something going for it. I haven't read Twilight because I'm a massive snob, no other reason lol 😉

Vampire Diaries, however, I adore and it pains me to see it called "trash". It's almost like these shows get called this because some people think they don't compare to BtVS which is kind of odd. Personally, and I've said this before, I think it blows BtVS out of the water. Saying that, I don't compare them further than "I like this show better". It's a fantastically well written show with a deep mythology that sticks and holds up even into season 3. It's intense and powerful and a whole set of incredibly interesting and complex characters. However, if it's not your thing, like True Blood wasn't mine, then it's not your thing.

One other really small thing that someone said about rock music being played...I find that TVD, on the whole, uses really mellow/indie music. Off the top of my head I can think of lots of scenes with that type of music but not one that felt too "loud".

In episode one of birthday during the phone conversation at the end I could barely hear what they were saying over the blaring "Drop in the Ocean" song which was playing lol. I agree with everything else you said.
I'm not sure if the fact that they're vampire shows/movies should automatically make us to compare them to Buffy. Maybe we should just treat them like any other show that isn't a vampires show. Yes, vampires are the theme. But we should compare the series/movie to Buffy not by their common theme, but by the fact that each of them are a show/movie, in general.
I haven't watched any of those, but I'm pretty sure that if we compare them as shows, Buffy would be better. Just my opinion though.

Actually, i think it's more the "fighting against evil and inner demons" and human and vampires try to get a relationship to work" thing that makes people compare.

And an attitude like that is exactly why we were possibly robbed of what could've been a truly good and interesting film experience.

*shrug* different strokes. With any luck, they listened to the voices rising saying "we want more buffy, but with joss!" and give us the kind of movie i described.

I've banged my head bloody in the movie threads trying to convince people they're judging without knowledge. Just taking things for granted. "Different must be bad." *sigh*

It's veeery different. But jean whatever his name was reminded me of spike and angelus and damien, attitude wise. I only read the 4 first books and from what i remember each book was:

Anita is a kick ass female who's trying to be witty, but failing. In each book she has to solve a case. She seems like a feministic role model at first, not being enthralled with vampires like the rest of society(which reminds me strongly of season 8&9s vampires are popular plot) but she doesn't seem to be angry enough with the sexually harrasing jean as she should(it really made me appreciate buffy's more healthy disgust with spike in season 6). Also, all that hot action we're promised? I heard there's actual sex in book 7 or something, but in the 4 first books there's maybe two "sexy" scenes per book, and those consists of anita being sexually assulted. I think it's okay to be into that, book there weren't enough scenes to be a very sexual series, as i hoped.

I didn't buy the fifth book since anita was contemplating going out with jean, since he pointed out that since her boyfriend had dated her for a while, he should get a date as well.

It was years since i read the books, and obviously there were good things about the books, since i bought the following three right after reading the first one, but for the life of me, i can't remember what. The angry feministic voice in my head couldn't stand it anymore, and even though my niece, who loves the series and also twilight and buffy, so i think she has somewhat good taste, assures me it gets better and that jean is nicer later on, i didn't read any further. I just couldn't stand he thought of her ending up with that creep, which she will later on.

I'm thinking about reading on of the later books one day though, to see how the series evolve. But i would recommend borrowing, not buying. And to answer your original question;

Buffy would roll her eyes at anita and stake jean. It's a very very different plot and set of characters.

I'm curious. Besides from personal taste how would one decide which show is better than another? I do it all the time and I make a huge distinction between what I think is "good" and what's entertaining/enjoyable. What are we using to measure quality if it's isn't "I like it = It's good. I don't like it = it's bad"?

I haven't watched any of those, but I'm pretty sure that if we compare them as shows, Buffy would be better. Just my opinion though.

If you haven't watched them what are you basing your opinion on? That you love Buffy? What you've heard others say about the other shows?

I wonder if Twilight fans would say the same about those finding Buffy to be way better. Everyone that disagrees with "me" is obviously wrong...

Good point. Which criteria is used to devide what's better? I prefer watching 'american dad, over 'lie to me' but i know which show that has bettr writing, three dimensional characters, better soundtrack, etc etc.
If you haven't watched them what are you basing your opinion on? That you love Buffy? What you've heard others say about the other shows?

Actually both. I know Buffy well, I know it's very very good, and I've heard what people say about it, professionals, tv peopple. It's a show that will still have fans even 10 years after it's over, and we're close to that. And I hear what people say about the others and it seems to me that they won't be what Buffy was even after she show is over. It seems to me that people love them right now because they're a trend, vampires are a trend right now. Buffy wasn't a trend, at a time when vampires weren't the big trend, never had high ratings, yet you just used to hear good things about it. Trends have the tendency to calm down after it's over, then people move on to the next thing, the next trend. I'm not saying they're not good or that people shouldn't love them, but according to what I said, they sound different from Buffy, not really in a good way. How can I trust shows/movies that are based on a trend?
