I've only seen Angel once, I finished the whole things two months ago. I really liked it.
For me, season 1 was okay, not great - a first season indeed. There are two sorts of first seasons to great shows : the kind that hooks everybody from the beginning and after that it can go either way (Veronica Mars, Desperate Housewives, Heroes...) and the kind that's not that great but that you have to sit through if you want to fully enjoy the rest (Buffy, Angel...).
Season 2 was not my favourite, I found the Darla thing quite boring actually... But I loooved the Pylea episodes ! (Fred love!)
Season 3 was amazing, I cannot understand how people are not warmer about it, I remember being hardly able to resist the temptation to watch it all in one day (with all the Wesley drama, that was so unexpected and well written).
Season 4 was good : it could have been great but I think it's Charisma's pregnancy to blame (though I'm of course not blaming Charisma for getting pregnant! =D). I think it ruined everything, you can truly see how they changed storylines at the last minute just to fit it in (I'm thinking Jennifer Garner in Alias, I'm thinking Marcia Cross in Desperate Housewives, I'm even thinking Holly Marie Combs in Charmed...).
Season 5 was really great, though everyone saying it was amazing made me expect more... I loved lots of things about it, the surprise at the end is amazingly brought. I think my biggest problem with that season must be that it was the last one : never ending the Fred thing really bugs me, in a way I cannot describe. I mean, if there had been a S6 and Joss could have had Willow separate Illyria from Fred (some kind of giant mystical mitosis I guess!), I'd love S5 way more... Now all I can think of is that one of the greatest characters I've ever seen was just killed off, that her soul was burnt, that there's nothing left from her and that her body has been raped by an evil ancient God who uses it just like a shell, disrespectfully. I know that it's not what it was supposed to be but since the show ends, that's all we got to see, so that's all there is to see. It makes me sad, really.
