Michael Jackson Dies...

I heard it from Katie Couric in a CBS Evening News Special report, and was immediately shocked. I'm still shocked, of course, and have been thinking about it all day. I really liked his music, and although I don't remember a lot from my childhood, I remember listening to "Thriller" in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1983 or 1984, in a neighbor's garage. I also remember listening to Bad at a cousin's house around the time it was released. I stopped following his career around the time it faded in the mid-90s, but still bought The Essential Michael Jackson not too long ago. As for his personal life, it's sad, and would have made sense if only he had explained himself. However, he didn't for the simple fact that he didn't need to, since it was none of our business. However, because he was a public figure, the worldwide media felt it was their business, and wouldn't stop hounding him until he eventually went into virtual reclusion. That's even more sad, I think. At least he's now at peace, but I hope that someone takes care of his children, raises them well, and helps them deal with their grief. R.I.P.
 
I was walking out of work, and as soon as I got out into the parking lot, one of my fellow workers came up to me and told me about it.
I didn't believe her at first, but then I knew for sure as soon as I got home.
The thing that amazes me the most is that everybody found out about his death within the first hour.
It shows how much America likes to text.
I really loved his music, it's a real bummer that he's gone now.

The thunderstorms were really loud last night, so I watched about two hours of his music videos on MTV until I fell asleep.
The funny thing was, the music videos started at midnight and they were all on repeat.
They also had breaks where they showed quotes from random celebrities' reactions through Twitter.
He's the only thing playing on MTV today.

REST IN PEACE.
 
You mean MTV took a break from airing stupid reality shows to air music videos? Have they forgotten everything they stand for?

MTV doesn't know what they're about.
They are too lazy to rename their channel.
I guess MTV will be what it was again whenever more musical artists start dying.

So true.
After my roommate told me yesterday evening while I was cooking I was floored and just shocked. Then i went on Twitter and chronologically read that days tweets and as they went from speculation to confirmation I have to admit my eyes welled up and I shed a few tears... still now if I stop to think about it for too long such a great sadness comes over me... I mean, the world has lost a huge, if not the biggest musical icon... regardless of what you might believe about his character it is a big loss. So sad. I was most definitely a fan and I just hope he's found peace. My heart goes out to his children and the rest of his family and loved ones. R.I.P. Michael. I haven't been able to get Billy Jean out of my head all day.

I couldn't agree more. MTV actually isn't worthless today. It's all about music today like it should be always.

And the music is actually good!
But if they played music every day we wouldn't be able to watch shows about spoiled girls getting parties thrown for them, or parents trying to get new boyfriends/girlfriends for their daughters/sons! I just don't know that my heart could take such a loss!

I only watch MTV yet when it's "after hours", so when they play music, otherwise it's shit.

Harm disagrees: ya but how boring would music videos be ALL DAY...I mean hello get a radio. Those shows are funny and MTV knows how to get ratings..someone's watching them!

Ummmm, how boring is it that 90% of all television stations play reality shows all day....I mean hello get some damn variety. These shows are largely awful (and nearly none original) and people are indeed watching them. Ratings are in no way an indicator of actual quality. And, really, how is it asking so much for one network who includes the term music in their name to actually play some?

God, I know. The massive public interest in reality shows continues to allude and fascinate me. What is so interesting about them is totally beyond me.

On saturday a club down here near my place is having a Michael Jackson reunion party/80s dance night. I'll so be there, drinking in remembrance. 😉
 
I just remembered that I have a dusty old VCD of Michael Jackson's "Captain EO" in a box somewhere. I haven't watched it in years. Now I am obsessed with finding it.....

Oh, I've never seen that one. Colour me jealous if you find it.
So I came downstairs the morning after he died and my sister was all "Michael Jackson's dead" and I was all like "Okay."

Then I went to school and old Michael Jackson jokes breathed new life as concoctions inspired by his early departure blossomed into glorious success. I mean, it's a shame that he's dead, as it's a shame when anyone's dead, but I really can't be doing with all of the incessant media coverage and they ought to at least air one programme where they make tasteless Michael Jackson jokes.

I don't know if anyone else is watching the funeral service, although I imagine people will be, i thought it was a very fitting tribute to Micheal.

Stevie Wonder was just outstanding!! Absolutely amazing!! And Jermain singing "smile" nearly reduced me to tears.

I don't think it actually hit in he was dead until just now, which is weird considering all the hype, but still...
