The Bachelor Party

Cordy rules this episode!😎 First she has a hot date, and is looking smokin' hot in her black dress🙂 She leaves with some chump named Piece who as it turns out she might be seeing for more superfincal reasons. Doyle stumbles upon a photo of Buffy which touches a nerve with Angel (this forshadows a later event in the episode. Doyle then gets a vision of a young man being attacked by a gang of punks. Titles.

Cordy's date is boring her, but the guys are having more fun beating up the punks and saving the guy, but they leave one who happens to be a demon behind. Said Demon later goes after Cordy while she is trying to lose dullhead Piece. Doyle makes the save a bow and arrow and Cordy is impressed by his bravey. In typical fashion the next morning she is more concerned with discussing her conflict between rich, but boring guys like Piece and weird, but sweet guys like Doyle than she is the fact that she could have been killed. Cordy decides to thank Doyle for saving her and looks set to ask him out, before they are interupted by a cute blonde named Harry who happens to be Doyle's wife. Harry is there to ask Doyle to sign devoice papers so that she can marry current flame Richard.

Doyle later tells Angel that he and Harry got married young and that it was at a time before he knew that he was a demon, once she found out she left according to Doyle. In a clever scene Angel follows Richard to a resteraut and busts in on him as a demon with a knife about to stab Harry... or so our hero thinks, in fact Harry knows about Richard's demon ways and that he owns the place and was simply going to use the knife to cut a cake😳 Harry tells Angel that she was open minded to Doyle being a demon and in fact tried to encourage him to socialize with other demons, but that he was having none of it.

Feeling bad and believing that the split was his fault Doyle signs the papers. Richard invites Doyle to his bachelor party and Harry wants Cordy to be the only human at her party. At the bachelor party Angel follows some of Richard's friends into the kitchen and discovers one of them doing a spell. He phones Harry and asks her to translate it into english. Angel is then knocked cold by Richard's friends. Back at the party Doyle gives Richard his blessings. The next thing he knows he is being manhandled into a magic box. As it turns out by giving his blessings Doyle has set himself up to have his brains eaten by Richard. It is demon tradition that to eat the brains of your future wive's ex allows you to take his love and makes for a happy marriage.

Now the episode goes to another level, Angel busts in literary through the doors and delivers the killer line "Partys Over!" HELL YEAH!🙂 Angel kicks some major demon butt in an explosive fight before being ganged up on. Doyle gets annoyed and so goes into demon mode to even up the odds. Cordy and Harry having cotton on to Richard's plans interupt (should mention Cordy is looking damn fine again in a nice blue number😎). Then the highlight of the episode.
CORDY: "Well you shouldn't be trying to eat my friend's brains you horrible ugly demon people!" She delivers this line with real verve. Doyle gets up but is in demon face and Cordy doesn't know it is him so in a priceless scene just goes to town on him with a metal tray, oh brilliant!😀
ANGEL: "Its ok"
CORDY: "Its so not ok" (turns around to see Doyle back in human face) "Oh Doyle look what they did to you"😀 Classic Cordy!

Richard tells Harry that he needs to perform the ritral in order for their marriage to be accepted by his people. Harry does the right thing and leaves the freak show. Later Cordy lifts Doyles mood by telling him that he is a nice guy and that coming from her that must be the truth😉 Doyle gets another vision, but this time its about Buffy. The End.

Even as a none Doyle-fan I really liked this Doyle-certic episode. It neatly explained some his back story while adding some much needed substance to his character and also advanced Cordy's narrative. The pacing was spot on, and the supporting characters were strong, the second half of the episode was filled with some good twists, great action, and Cordy at her best. Also, the cliffhanger ending was great too.🙂 

I agree, I'm not a big fan of this episode, it has some funny moments with "sensitive" Angel. But I think you're right about it maybe should have been a few episodes later in the season. I do like Kate overall as a character, but they just don't develop her well or use her well. Plus the whole are they/are they not attracted to each other thing I thought was unnecessary. Although I guess it kind of fuels her hate for him when she finds out he's a vampire. Like, "I just found a nice, good looking guy and he turns out to be a vampire". lol. Bachelor Party I don't like either, so the less we talk about that the better. lol

I'll stand by you, Mr. Trick. Cordy looks amazing in that bikini for the commercial she was in (the one where Angel comes by and gets offended by her asshole director). That's the one purely surface Cordy image burned in my memory.

Holy shit can't believe its been nearly three months since I posted a review😱

I Will Remember You

First of all Fuffy Baith will be pleased to learn that I didn't really like Cordy's look in this episode she has this whole gypsy mixed with a surfer girl thing going😀

Anyway, said Miss Chase steals the pre-titles sequence as she and Doyle ponder what happened between Angel and Buffy in Sunnydale. The best line of the episode has to be "Batton down the hatches here comes Hurricane Buffy"😀 and Cordy and Doyle also thinking that Angel was going to stake himself out of depressing whereas he was just using the stake to prop up a table was awesome too!😀 Buffy's entrance finishing off Cordy's sentence was a nice touch. Titles.

I liked the role reversal between Cordy and Buffy with Buffy actually being the brutally honest one, and Cordy being really nervous and trying to hide her true feelings (not very well mind). Angel and Buffy teaming up against the Mutants was a slick bit of action. Buffy's later "Mutent Demon Ninja" line was possibly her best of this episode. From here the episode takes a bit of a down turn. The miscommunication stuff between the two leads in the sewer feels clunky. I gets purpose and it does maybe show the differences between them in their respective locations and lives, but it just feels a bit flat to me. I don't know if screw ball comedy was ever their strong suit, not with each other anyway.

Another problem is that Cordelia and Doyle feel too much like comic relief. They never feel important to the story of the episode and seem there to mostly add comments almost like they are standing at the side lines waiting to be called in. DB does show his comic chops as when becoming human one of the highlights is him just pigging out on the taste of chocolate😛 When Angel gets Doyle to take him to the Oracles to find out just what has happened to him, we get this line from Doyle "If they turn you into a toad don't come crying to me"😱 Its a crap joke anyway, but there are too many cheesy comic lines like that in what is supposed to be a dramatic episode.

When Angel gets the all clear from the Oracles he heads straight for 'hurricane Buffy' and much to Cordy's chagrin they sit around chatting and having tea😉 There are some sweet moments between the two here, such as Buffy and Angel both enjoying chocolate together. On the other hand the comedy love making is a little corny and dated, but hot I won't denie!😛 I also felt that at this stage that Buffy's actions towards Angel was a bit melodramatic and out of character for her.
Through a Doyle vision Angel finds out that the big band of Mohra Demon's is coming back for revenge so he decides to leave Buffy tucked up sleeping while he goes into battle. It doesn't take too much for Buffy to get the truth out of Cordy and in the end the lovers defeat the Demon together. The Mohra Demon wasn't the most interesting looking on Angel and this final fight scene felt a tad tame.

This latest event does make Angel re-think the whole being human thing as he is worried about the danger it will put Buffy in. So he revisits the charming looking Oracles and persuades them to trade his life for Buffy's and as a result she forgets that the events of the day between her and Angel ever happened. And so we get a little more melodrama, but the twist and Angel's sacrifice was something at least.

I can see why this episode happened, but like some it just feels a bit late in the day and out of place, as I feel perfect closure to the Buffy/Angel relationship came at the end of Buffy S3. Angel becoming human was a nice concept, but there just felt a lack of a story and Doyle and Cordy were needlessly sidetracked. A very hit and miss for me.

Love Cordy's ironic voice over which opens this episode! And her suggesting that Angel's nickname should be the "Dark Avenger" as well as her confusing which colour represents being broke is also funny😀 And Ms. Chase does look beautiful in this opening scene, even the wavy hair works for me!😛 Anyway... roping Doyle into doing the promotional video and the whole theme of being an hero nicely sets up what is to come in the episodes. Titles.

We retrace the plot from the previous episode for the benefit of Cordy and Doyle which does a good job of selling Angel's torment over what Buffy. Then in an intimate moment Doyle is about to reveal his secret to Cordelia when a vision strikes. Angel and Doyle track down extras from the Lost Boys to a cellar in an old house. They turn out to be Bracken Demon's just like Doyle and believe that Angel is their savivour. In an effective flashback sequence we see Doyle's backstory showing when he learnt about his Demon powers. I love the grainy and sinister look to this sequence its brilliantly filmed. The gang arrange a ship for the Demons to leave town, but before this can happen an army of Demon Nazis show up and start destroying the town. These guys are super creepy😱 In possibly his best piece of acting yet on the show DB gives a convincing pitch as to why he could be useful to them, its almost like Angel here is dipping into his Angelus playbook for the sake of good, not for the first or the last time of course. Speaking of fine acting I also like Carpenter's performance during the next scene where she presurades the Captain of the ship to wait just a bit longer for the rest of them.

We then get the crucial part of the episode where one of the Bracken Demon's lets slip Doyle's secret to Cordelia. Her "Half-demon!"! response just tickled me for some reason. Back at Nazi base the Hitler figure reveals his big weapon, a light which wipes out anything with a trace of human in them. In a very sweet scene Cordy blows up at Doyle over not telling her his secert and actually gives very logical reasoning why dating an half-demon would not be an issue for her ("my boss is a vampire" etc...). The way she forcefully reassures Doyle that this is no big deal is classic Cordy straight talking, and also shows just how much she has grown since Sunnydale. She then opens the door for Doyle to ask her out, but before he can do so Angel arrives with the army in hot presuit. The deadly light ends up on the ship and edging ever closer to the brackens. Angel cannot disarm the light without killing himself, at first it looks like he will make the sacrfice, Doyle mentions fighting "The Good Fight" but then sucker punches Angel, gives Cordy a fair well embrace and makes the scarfice himself for the people he loves (including Cordelia). The acting from all three in this scene is very good. The episode ends with Cordy and Angel watching Doyle's video which suddenly takes on a less comic tone and is now more sember, concluding with Doyle's line "is that it? am I done"?🙁

And so concludes one of the most dramtic episodes of the series up to this point an certainly the most compelling. The atmosphere throughout and the gritty look impressed me as did the creature make up, including that of the Nazi Demons who were to me one of the most sinister villains on either show. Doyle's story was brilliantly throughout the episode including his backstory and the lead up to his dramatic moment at the end. I will confuess that I am still not the biggest fan of the character, but he could not have gone out on a higher note. One of the more moving episodes of the series. RIP to Doyle and more importantly to Glen Quinn🙂

Parting Gifts

The gang are still mourning Doyle's loss espically Cordelia who is is put off by the lack of physical trace of him around the office. She does have a distraction through in the form of a very funny and cheesy stain removel ad audtion. However, Cordy's emotional state and her new gift of a vision left to her by Doyle soon throws her through a loop. Meanwhile Angel takes in a demon named Barney who has the gift of reading people and insists that he is being tracked by a hunter, who we see in little clips as a lather clad motorcycle guy. I got a kick out of Angel being offended at Barney's stereotype about vampires sleeping in coffins which after all was invented by "hack writers"😀 and Cordy trying to get rid of her gift through kissing (doesn't work). Angel reliases that she is now his link the Powers that Be in the place of Doyle, something she is not too thrilled about.

When checking out Barney's apartment Angel stumbles upon old Sunnydale friend Wesley Windham-Pryce free from his watcher duties and posing as a "rogue demon hunter"😀 Wesley explains that he is actually tracking the demon who is after Barney. Cordy and Wes revisit their sunnydale romance, well sort of😉 and Angel uses his contacts in China town to track down 'the Kungal demon' who as it turns out is on his death bed as a result of having his horn and gift for reading people stolen by BARNEY!😱 Meanwhile Barney works his charms on Cordy and in the process finds out about her new gift so kiddanaps her and puts her up for aution. A lawyer from Wolfham and Hart bids the highest but decides that she only wants Cordelia's eyes (for her gift), but before the extraction can take place Angel and Wes make the save, and Angel kicks arse, while Wes does his bumbling British guy act, and Cordy gets to kill Barney with his horn. Wesley does get some credit for his research skills, but then seems intent to head off into the sunset, very slowly!😀 Before Angel offers him breakfast, and it seems like Wes maybe staying a bit longer after all😉

This was another strong episode. They did a good job of selling the loss of Doyle from the previous episode, and the introduction of Wes into the show was clever and funny. I liked the references to his past as a watcher, and to him losing two Slayers and being fired. Wesley's transition from the comic relief supporting role we saw him play in Buffy and the more credible part of Angel's gang does take a little time to get going (I will cover this further in future reviews), but his introduction here is handled well and I there are so many witty exchanges between him and Cordy. I also liked Barney's story and thought the actor playing him was really good, and the switch from playing the nervous victim to something more sinister was very effective. Overall an entertaining episode, with some good character advancement and interaction.

There is a serial killer Vampire in LA who leaves a cross marked on his victims faces, even more disturbing Angel is having bad dreams about him which make him cranky around the office. When he sees the crime scene photos at the police station something sparks in him. Wesley has been doing his research and links the killings to Angelus something which Cordelia doesn't want to believe. Angel tells them about the dreams and that it does fit Angelus' MO. Wesley believes that Angel might be sleepwalking so they put it to the test by chaing their employer to the bed for the night, during which Angel has a flash back to his glory days😱 There has been another victim during the night which means that Angel couldn't have been the killer, but he does know who is and that is a vampire named Penn (a pre-fame Jeremy Renner) who Angel trained back in the day and who is now working his mojo 200 years later in modern LA.

Angel gives Kate and the Cops Penn's description and his next victim which allows them to save his life, while Angel goes after his former student, but Kate gets there first and soon discovers Angel's secret which then makes her untrusting of him. And so she does a little research into his past as Angelus. Penn manages to escape and the next day drops in on Cordy who unwillaly gives up the low down on Kate and Angel's link. Penn abducts Kate in order to draw out Angel, and the two have one last big fight, but it is Kate who gets the final word when she stakes Penn. Cordelia assures Angel that she is still very much on his team, but that of course she would stake him in a second should he return to the darkside😉

Another very good episode with one reservation and that is the charsma free zone that is Renner. As an actor I think he has a very robotic style and brings very little bite to this part, but luckily the writing of Penn's character and his past with Angel is so well written than it papers over the cracks. Angel's dark past becomes a crucial part of the second half of this season and so this was a good way to explore it, and there is strong supense and twists in store. The fight scenes between him and Penn are also very explosive. This might be Kate's strongest episode to date too. Finally she comes off as a strong character and the twist of her doing research on Angel's past which then allows her to kill Penn at the end was important for her character. There are some nice touches to Cordelia and Wesley's involvement with Angel, but this is episode belongs to Kate for me.

I would love to have seen more of Penn - he would have made a good little arc. And they threw in the super fast walk, wanted more of that. I would have loved to see more of where Penn fits in. Gotta say - Angel is 0 for 4 in the father game - Peen, Spike, Lawson and Connor all tried to kill him. Now those are some serious daddy issues! If they had all combined forces - nah, Spike is too unpredictable. He's just as likely to screw the others as go after Angel.

As for Kate - I could never see her as more than the small blonde tough little Buffy substitute. She really deserved far more than I was willing to give her as far as credit is concerned.

Wesley - could not stand him in BTVS, and wasn't thrilled to see him in Angel. And then I watched the entire series and Wesley does the worst thing for the best reason. There is man pain, hate sex, and he is still Wesley to the core. So now I see proto-Wesley and it's interesting to see how many characteristics changed, while his character , his core, is tempered into valyrian steel.

I say Wesley hands down. Both Angel and Cordy changed, and grew, and were wonderful. But Wesley went from Mr's Bumbling Pretentious Wannabe to stone cold killer. Angel and Cordy had some huge changes to deal with, but in the end they were still Angel and Cordy. But compare the 'rogue demon hunter' to the man who unloads an entire clip into his father without a moment of hesitation - those are too very different people.

Yeah, Renner is meh - which is part of why it's just as well that they didn't carry on with him. It's just that Penn brings a whole new set of questions. You know me - long term viewer - I would love to know if there were any more sired by Darla, Angelus, or Dru.

Think you're right. The other thing is that part of Angel and Cordy's character growth starts in Buffy, and I have mixed feelings about Cordy's descent into darkness...

Would you say that he had the best character growth on the show? Guess I would say either him or Cordy, maybe Angel.

I would say Wes. I thought Cordy's growth was rushed. She goes from being the same old Cordy in Pylea to being mature in just a matter of episodes, well it was actually over five months but I thought we should've at least witnessed her maturity before Wes acknowledged it. I also didn't like the whole thing with her and Angel.

Season 5 hurt the Angel character IMO.

There are bumpy patches over the course of both Buffy and Angel, for which the viewer has to get through before they can enjoy the good stuff, the following two episodes are a good example of this. Your reviewer did suffer quite a bit through these, but here goes!😱

Expecting

Cordelia has a night on the town with some girls who oddly have not been seen up til this episode. Angel and Wesley cover for her when she gets a vision and in the process convince the girls that they are gay😀 They find a demon hatching from an egg and kill it before it can be unleashed on the city. Cordelia meets a cypher at a club and ends up sleeping with him. When she wakes the guy is gone, and she mysteriouslly finds herself pregnant! When she doesn't come into work Angel and Wesley show up at her apartment and find out the reason.

Through some heavy muscle work (i.e. genreatic Angel beats up gang of dorks to get the truth sequence) and research they find out that a demon has been getting rich guys to seduce girls in order to reproduce Demons. In other words Cordelia is carrying a Demon child. Slowly the demon starts taking control of her and in a sequence which reminded me a little of S4 Cordy she becomes prosessed and joins the other women in a symbolic baby shower where they are to give birth, but ultimately die. After some comedy with Wes and the demon, Angel freezes him and saves Cordy and the other women. And back the office a few days later Cordelia shows the boys that she is stronger than they give her credit for and is happy to have them in her life. I like the "Sex is bad" gag here.🙂

This episode serves a purpose, but just feels a bit of a message of the week episode and is the sort of thing which Buffy did better as a show. The set up is fine, but the problem is that the guy who Cordelia sleeps with is just such a dry, nitwit with no personality. I don't really buy that she would sleep with him, maybe Buffy S1 Cordy, but not now. The monster baby narrative is a b-movie trendmark but here it is just very heavy handed, cheesy, and leads to some lame comedy. The episode plods along, and just feels a bit predictable with an anti-climatic ending. I did like Phatom Dennis careing for Cordelia though.

Thanks IMDB for helping me trace the baffling plot of this one😉 We start with just about the only good thing about the episode which is Wesley's hilariouslly uncool dancing at a party, his funny sweater😀 and Angel's even funnier uncool dancing (which he imagines😉). The next day Angel offically gives Wesley a job, and Cordelia gets a vision of a man burnt to death. Angel finds said man too late, but does bump into a weird looking dude called Tay who says that he has come from another dimension to prevent the guys killer from causing chaos on earth. Yeah heard that one before, hey Angel you might want to... oh nevermind!😱

When searching the dead guys apartment Angel bumps into a woman who has the gifts of the killer which Angel soon finds out. Angel follows her to an Art Museum where she refuses to answer his questions, and a portal opens with a girl dropping in from another dimension, and Tay and a his army show up and capture the girl, later piecing a ridge to her back. The next day, the strange woman is revealed as Jira a princess who finally mumbles to Angel that in her world when women come of age they have the ridges on their backs sniped so that they can become slaves to men, and that Jira is trying to help them escape. However, when Angel tries to reason with her Jira still refuses his help. Cordelia and Wesley over hear Tay saying that another portal is set to open and that the girl they captured will lead them to it. The trio rescue the girls in time, and after a big battle Angel warns Tay to take the next portal out of town and never to return. The next day Jira informs him that the girls are safe.

One of the reasons I am a Star Wars and Sci-Fi cynic is because of the self-important, cod plot explaining, dreay storytelling which I find very boring. The reason I love shows like Angel and Buffy are because they take the worse aspects of Sci-Fi and twist them into something much more fun and human. This episode loses sight of that, becoming one long ramble fest, filled with odd looking characters who are just odd looking for the sake of it and not because they support a sound narrative. Also Angel acts really dumb in this episode, why does he believe Tay's story? And later why does he fight to help Jira when she has given him no reason too. Cordy and Wes ae given nothing of interest to do, and feel always on the fringes of the plot. Not to mention that Wesley at this point has become too much of a cartoonish wimpy brit. And it annoyed me when he was acting creepy when rescuring the girls (isn't he supposed to be one of the good guys?😡). The plot is waffer thin, the pacing all off, the scenes poorly connected and there are no interesting characters. Its a stinker!😱

I like the "Sex is bad" gag here.🙂 The set up is fine, but the problem is that the guy who Cordelia sleeps with is just such a dry, nitwit with no personality

Haha. Yes, in the Buffyverse, sex=bad, no good comes from it. The actor that plays the guy Cordelia sleeps with, is Ken Marino, and I really like him in his comedic roles, this is clearly just an early acting job for him. I kind of think he's a bit cute, so I can see why Cordy slept with him, but you're right he's a bit unlikable.

Reading you're synopsis of She, I don't remember this episode. lol. But I will agree with you this is a bad episode. Just not good. Idk the idea of these girls just sounds a little more space sci-fi to me, which does not fit with the Angel show. I would have to rewatch this again, but that's not going to happen. lol
