My Personal theory about why the slayer line became unstable!

I think what nerd4hire is trying to say (correct me if I'm wrong) is that we are arguing over whether or not Willow used the scythe for the spell in Chosen. But it's a FACT that she used it. We saw her use it. That's what happened, no question about it. Also, we See with our own eyes that the knives are all the same, the bringer knives that is, so once again we're arguing over a non-existent argument. It's like arguing over whether or not Spike is a vampire. He is. We see it all the time.

exactly
Prophecy Girl's got a point there, what if Willow dies, or Buffy (it was her power that was shared,) or what if the Scythe is destroyed... would there still be a multitude of Slayers?

Anyhow, that's a whole different discussion really. I think N4H may be right that like the Slayerline this thread needs to be "refocussed" on its original subject. So, bring out that theory N4H.

OK here it is then. I'm thinking something like this.

In Season 5 Spike can't hit Buffy without activating his chip. In Season 6 that changes. If he hits Buffy in season 6, his chip won't cause him pain. The chip still functions, so Spike comes to the conclusion Buffy has come back to life as demon. Tara does research, and tell us "No, that's not what happened". So what did happen?

In S-7's Get it done, we learn the Slayer and the slayer-line is imbued with demon energy. I suggest that's what Spike's chip detected, and that's what changed in Season 6. After Buffy's first death the demon energy left, and passed into Kendra, taking with it all functions governed by that energy. Only power woven into the fabric of Buffy's original body remained.

In Buffy's second death the original body is destroyed. Willow magically rebuilds it. In the Buffyverse magic can have consequences. In this case Willow has built a second slayer imbued with the slayer's demon energy.

Let's flip to The First for a sec. The First is not corporeal, yet it can effect transmissions and communication to this reality. The First is energy. The First is evil. In this way you could refer to it as dark. The First is dark energy. Could you not also refer to demon energy as dark energy? So you have 2 similar energies.

The ultimate plan of The First in Season 7 is to become corporeal. It wants to be able to enter any human on the planet, and in that manner take corporeal form. It tells us this. So how will it manage the deed?

Beljoxa's eye tells us the fact Buffy is alive has created a disruption in the slayer-line The First can take advantage of.

At one time dark energy could only be passed through the slayer line to single, specific focal points.

Willow's spell has changed this. Dark energy has now been passed in such a way it can now exist in two places at once.

If the First can find a way to do it, it can pass dark energy and therefore itself into any person, anywhere. It only needs a catalyst.

Enter the scythe. The scythe can be used to alter the way dark energy is transmitted through the slayer line. We know this because when Buffy is talking to the Potentials in Chosen Buffy tells them -

Willow is going to use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny

Also when Willow does the spell, just after she says "Oh my Goddess", we see her gripping the scythe, the scythe glows, light shoots upwards from the center, and the scythe makes that twangy, zing noise it makes when it strikes something.

So I'm going to Hypothesize the First needs the Scythe to transmit itself through, into this world, in a manner in which it can affect a corporeal state by entering any person it wishes.

First it must kill all slayers and potentials though, because if it doesn't the scythe will direct the energy to specific targets. The First wants to go anywhere it wants, not just into specific humans decided on by a previous spell.

It also needs a slayer. We know this because Willow must be in Principal Wood's office to do the spell. Location is important. The first thing Wood does is direct Willow do his office. Buffy makes a point of saying to Willow "You'll be directly above the Field". In other words, she needs to be "above the Field" -where the Slayers are - to affect the spell.

So the theory goes like this. The First wants to become corporeal. It knows it can do this once 2 slayers exist in the same place, at the same time, because that means dark energy (itself) can now be transmitted into multiple targets through the use of the scythe, and a slayer.

Very Interesting theory nerd4hire, but the First is an external energy the whole point of Willow being able to active the Slayers is because she taps into the power of the Slayer which is inside the Scythe, the script says:

The scythe on the floor suddenly flares with a brilliant white light as tremendous power flows from it into Willow's hands.

So we can see the power flows into Willow who then sends it all around the world to all the potentials. Also if the First used the Scythe it would only be able to enter all the potentials, because they are the only people the Scythe effects, If it were connected to every Man, Woman and Child every Woman (maybe Men) would have become a Slayer when Willow did the Spell.

N4H claimed that if it first kills all potentials, the Scythe looses its specific target and FE can overrule it and target every human being instead.

The only thing I don't get is where the whole you need to have two slayers comes in, if this is true, why did it try to kill Faith? Maybe you could try to explain this a bit more. I think the essential idea of FE wanting to use the Scythe to become a coorporeal body-hopper is a nice theory, but the other part may need some work.

Actually this theory is just something I slapped together, but what the heck, let's see if it can be defended. 🙂

Yes she taps into "the power of the slayer", and that slayer power originates with demon energy as we saw in Get it Done. I postulate demon energy has similar properties to the essence of The First, meaning First Evil energy can be transmitted through the Scythe just as demon energy can.

The only thing I don't get is where the whole you need to have two slayers comes in, if this is true, why did it try to kill Faith?

Actually you don't need two slayers. The fact that two slayers imbued with demon energy now exist in two places at the same time is what important. It means dark energy can be transmitted into multiple human hosts.

On the "why did it try to kill Faith" question, I've go to admit that one stops me a bit too. Here's a possibility.

It doesn't really need Faith. She's just dross. Buffy is the slayer The First has targeted as the one most corruptable.

The First tried to corupt Angel in Amends. Why? I don't know. An experiment? part of a larger plan? Just playing? I don't know, but it did appear the intent was to corrupt Angel, then use him to in some way to affect Buffy.

That plan failed, because he couldn't corrupt Angel. In Season 7 however he has Spike, another souled vampire, with a love connection to Buffy. This time the plan works. He has Spike triggered primed and ready to go.

But why wouldn't he leave Faith alone for a backup? I don't know. Perhaps the line no longer passes through faith, or perhaps The First judges the, redeemed, street savvy Faith as too hard a nut to crack. It would seem easier to kill Faith then corrupt a new inexperienced slayer.

Actually you don't need two slayers. The fact that two slayers imbued with demon energy now exist in two places at the same time is what important. It means dark energy can be transmitted into multiple human hosts.

Why did the First himself then not try to create the demon energy in two places at a time. It was made possible through the Gift/Bargaining events, why did he not try to make them happen!?! Or something alike it. There are more ways to skin a cat, or clone a Slayer... hell, maybe literally cloning Buffy would've been enough.

As for the killing Faith, but not Buffy: If he kills Buffy the energy will once more only exist in one place, whereas if he kills Faith another Slayer will be called and it will exist in 2 slayers once more. (This kinda sounds like my theory from before, lol.)

Ok So here is my theory on why the First needed the Scythe,
If you think about it the Scythe is not only a weapon it is connected to all the Slayers, it can be used to manipulate the essence of the Slayer, and Willow was able to use the power within the Scythe to activate all the Potential Slayers, what if it could also do the reverse! If the First got its "Hands" on the Scythe maybe it could be used to call back the power of the active Slayers into it, de-activating Buffy and Faith.
And when Buffy and Faith die it would mean nothing because the power would not pass onto the next girl it would be locked inside the Scythe

My reason why the First would want to do this:
We know that the First was not near completing its plan, there was still allot of Potentials in the world, look at the small army Andrew had in "Damage" the First still had to kill all of them, all the ones living in Buffy's house and any other ones around the world not to mention Buffy and Faith.
The only reason why there was the big battle at that time was because Buffy brought the fight to the First, the First wasn't ready.

But if it got the Scythe and de-activated Buffy and Faith it could abandon its plan to kill the Potentials.

Well yeah, it kind of is your theory. Didn't you see where I tweaked it in a responding post above? I've now incorporated it into my own. S'alright? 🙂

As for the two slayers. I thought I was clear. My theory incorporates the idea the slayer line passes at least through Buffy in Season 7 (as a result of Willow's spell in Bargaining), and possibly through Faith as well. It has to pass through Buffy at least, for my theory to work, because otherwise why does The First want her?

I think I can explain the scythe thing better.

A common theme in the Buffy-Angel-Fray verse is the difficulty in moving large amounts of power through dimensions. This theme is an integral part of Buffy Season 5, Angel Season 4, and the 8 part Whedon-penned Fray comic. The Senior partners also have the problem with moving between dimensions. They need a conduit to communicate, and can only move between dimensions by using a being of lesser power as a host.

The Seal of Danzalthar can be used to move between dimension in Buffy 7, but it only moves corporeal beings. The First needs something that can move large amounts of raw, dark, energy and give it corporeal form when it gets there.

The slayer line moves dark, demon energy through dimensions and finds a human host for it.

Before Season 7 however this dark energy could only be moved into a single host designed for a specific purpose.

When Willow recreates the original Buffy in Bargaining complete with the demon energy that catalyzes the slayer line the opportunity now exists to pass mass amounts of energy into multiple hosts.

The Scythe is a precision tool capable of performing that function. If you just killed slayers to pass this energy you still couldn't direct the exact energy you want into the exact place you want it.

Oh, and Black-eye guy, I'm not ignoring your theory. I did read it, and I do understand it, I think. I'm just fixated on my own right now. 😀

Still, N4H my question remains. Why did the First not have one of its minions attempt to create a split in the Slayer, like the one caused by the Gift/Bargaining ressurection. Then again, maybe the whole point is that the First didn't realise something like that would happen. However, another question is why wait for an entire season?!? Also, does Buffy's alleged third death have anything to do with it?

Interesting theory N4H but it seems overly complicated, and no offense although i suppose its viable i dont really like it

and my answer remains -

The plan was in progress. Corrupt Spike. Use him to corrupt Buffy. Kill potentials so the scythe will have no distinct targets to send dark energy to. Try to gain control of the scythe independently. If unsuccessful use the corrupted slayer as a catalyst. This all took time

Also, does Buffy's alleged third death have anything to do with it.

No in this theory it was the complete recreation of Buffy replete with the Slayer's demon essence power that caused the disruption in the slayer line.

And not to worry Xin. I'm not hurt when people disagree with my little theories. I'm flattered that they read them. 😉

No, Buffy and Faith hold the line together. If Faith dies she couldn't pass it on, cause Buffy'd still hold it. If Buffy dies next she couldn't pass it on, because she lost that ability. If Buffy dies first and then Faith, all'd be okay.

NOT TRUE. The Slayer line would have passed on to Faith . . . ONLY.

Why does everyone believe that the Slayer line had become unstable? Because Giles and Anya believed that the Bejorxa Eye had said so? What if they had misinterpreted the Bejorxa Eye?

Didnt the beljoxis eye actually say that the slayer line was unstable. Although you raise a good point, everyone we hear from anya and giles is only an interpretation of what the eye said and they could have misinterpretted

Prove it. 😉

What if they didn't?

Thats neither here not there, although it doesn't seem likely that they would misintepret it but its still a possibility, they are after all only human

Shouldn't we stick to what's said on the show? I don't think we can just make it an interpretation, unless you want to make this a "what if"-theory.

There isn't really a need to stick to the show, as there is nothing really concrete on the show, i like it when we do pick at things on the show etc i think its really though provoking and creates a more exciting discussion
