Day 22 ~ Favorite Quote About Bangel From Other Characters?
In “I Will Remember You”, Cordelia referring to them as “the forbidden love of all time” is a classic, but if I’m being completely honest, the first thing that came to my mind was this exchange from “Faith, Hope & Trick”:

Willow - “Maybe we shouldn’t be too couply around Buffy.”
Cordelia - “Oh, you mean ‘cause of how the only guy that ever liked her turned into a vicious killer and had to be put down like a dog?”
Xander - “Can she cram complex issues into a nutshell, or what?”

Man, I could write a novel. But most of them have been covered above.

But in addition to the above, I'd say this fallacy that they don't "know" each other. I think Buffy and Angel had plenty of time to get to know each other, especially in s2-3. I think they really come to a deep understanding of each other in s3.

Maybe I'm just weirdly obsessive but I can think of so many good ones. So I think we have lots of choices. In fact, I thought @Jam had a gifset with people talking about B/A but I couldn't find it. 🙁

I am going to go with: "Give it up, Cordy. You're never gonna get between those two. Believe me, I know."

Excluding the comics, yes. It was left open-ended with strong hints that Buffy and Angel still consider each other their ideal. Obviously I would have liked it better if the two shows had merged back together and we got a chance to see them onscreen again as a couple and a team after all their character development, but I get that the separate networks and a whole host of other things would have made that impossible.

The comics Buffy/Angel storyline is nonsense, but the Spuffy breakup (which hilariously happened between seasons after ending the previous season with the big ILY) could mean it's finally moving in the right direction. Although there is apparently Angel/Illyria now. Why did anyone ever think that was an idea that was good or made sense? Angel/Fred would have been a far better option, and I don't ship them either!

Honestly not completely. I think the show writers / creators took a big dump on Bangel when Cangel & Spuffy came along. Trying to rewrite Cordy as some grand new love of Angel. in BTVS in Chosen when Angel is happy about Spike, and she acts like her relationship with Angel wasn't any better.

What was the highlight of our relationship -when you broke up with me, or when I killed you? I'm well aware of my stellar history with guys.

Her love with Angel was hard, but that doesn't near compare to her destructiveness with Spike who was still evil, emotional manipulated her, and tried to rape her.

But BTVS, seasons 1-5 and Angel before the Cangel mess, sure. Bangel was in good standing. And they did try recovering it SOME after that, which is good I guess.

Haven't read the comics, but from what I hear & the bit I did read, I don't think i'd like where Bangel ended up there.

I enjoyed the impersonation of them by Wesley and Cordelia. It was fun to watch.

I am not. They didn’t end up together. That's enough reason for me. They are my otp. SMG says so, even Joss thought so at some point. And still B/A were stabbed, shot, stamped down, downgraded and at the end I feel the Spuffy-community is huge in comparison to us. Bangel has been burned over the seasons of both shows. Yeah, there are references (we covered that topic), but they don't mean much in the great scheme. Not for me anyway. In the end they didn't end up together. And I need closure, I HATE open ends.

I do... sometimes think that far ahead. [...] Years if ever - my reaction was "Oh come on ... I waited 4 seasons for that?! After all they went through in S2-3, after all my emotional attachment to them, after I managed to endure Briley and animal-sex-Spuffy - after all that, I get a maybe - maybe - possibly not?

I gotta wait till she's done baking, you know, till she finds herself, 'cause that's the drill. Fine. I'm waitin' patiently, and meanwhile, The Immortal's eatin' cookie dough!

My version:

I gotta wait till Joss is done telling Buffy's dreadful love-stories, you know, till he rewards the patience,'cause that's the drill. I needed to wait for Rachel and Ross ages. And then he crumbles up my hope/patience/wish-come-true-moment, throws them in the air and *poof.

I would accept everything, every wacky detail that happened in canon as long as they would have ended up together in the end. But they didn't in the show and they won't in the comics. I still have a little bit of hope left for 19th September, but I am sure that it will die with the last comic-page.

Mostly, the exceptions would be comics and one Angel S1 episode; which I ignore as much as possible. I wouldn't ever have read the comics seeing as I have never been a comic reader and I am glad based on the comments I have read here.

Short answer, yes. I don't consider the comics strictly canon.* So if I'm going off what we got in the show, I was ultimately satisfied with Bangel in the story. I think while their paths diverted, their importance to each other in the text, subtext, parallels, and the moments they did reunite were significant enough to indicate that "their relationship transcends everything." I didn't always feel this way. In fact, I was so upset Angel left Buffy on first watch I refused to watch his show for years. LOL. And even then I wanted to scream every time I saw Riley on my TV Screen. But over the years of re-watching the shows together, going back and looking at the complete package of what we got on TV, I think that what we got was damn near perfect. And it left the door wide open for a reunion someday. As a fanfiction writer and avid reader, I'm thankful that they left it open-ended so we that we could come up with original stories about how Buffy and Angel found their way back to each other. And many of those stories are leaps and bounds better than what we get in the comics!

*Now you might say: But Dee, how is it that you don't consider the comics canon and yet you read them. Well, first of all, I read hundreds of fan fiction stories too. Those aren't canon. I read the novels when I was younger. Those aren't canon. I just like the Buffyverse, I like consuming material. I understand that Joss is behind the comics so it gives them additional weight but still, to me, given the very different medium, I don't consider comics strictly canon. I also don't consider them non-canon I just consider them a separate thing altogether. Like some sort of Joss supported AU. 🙂

One of my favorite things about Buffy and Angel’s relationship is the way that it continues even after he leaves Sunnydale, and I love their subsequent friendship just as much as I love their initial romance, if not moreso. I understand and accept that they cannot “be together,” so I pretty much ‘ship them exactly as they exist throughout. Outside of Buffy, I have never really been the shippery type at all, but when it comes to these two, my love of their love knows no bounds. So yes, I would say that I am quite satisfied with what we are given through the two series. I am largely unfamiliar with the comics, but they don’t seem to be too warmly regarded, at least on this thread, so I (thankfully?) have no comment on them.

Darn, I was gonna use that one! lol Though mentioned, I still gotta go with that. Spike acts high & mighty because Buffy slept with him, and she's clear on the difference. Angel, she wanted because he got her hot & she loved him. Spike she uses & accepts sexual because he happens to be there whenever she needs a stress release toy. She can shag him silly, or beat him senseless -whatever worked at the time.

Maturity is the big #1 as lots of you guys have already covered. I would also add in how similar their paths have been and how that makes them even more compatible. When people say they're not suited to each other I'm like 'are you kidding me!! They're practically mirror images of each other!'. They're the characters who, moreso than anyone else, can identify on multiple levels with what the other has been through because their journeys have so much in common.

Overall yes. Apart from the blip that was the weirdness of Cangel, I'm happy with the story in canon. I think the relationship was respected on both shows and I really liked how their connection and importance to each other was always maintained. Watching the two of them grow as individuals yet still care just as deeply about each other actually makes me ship them more. Looking back the only thing I would have changed about the storytelling is of course more crossovers and some of the writing in BtVS S3. I think we could have done with less back-and-forth at the start of the season and a bit more focus later on the s of Angel's fake-Angelus act on Buffy and their relationship. Even though I think Angel's appearance in Chosen could have been written better, I'm ultimately glad we got it and that enough room was left for us fans to continue the story and help them find their way back to each other in fanfic!

(Also comics don't exist 😉)

He knows with just a look at Willow that something has happened to Buffy. Not a favourite for what has happened but it's that look of being so happy to be home to the shock of finding out that something has happened to her.
