It doesn't have it's name going for it, but I think the Vampire thing is a big pull at the moment.

The show Vampire Diaries is doing well, and that has a stupid name.

Besides I don't think the title Buffy the Vampire Slayer is that odd anymore, it was when it first came out, but Buffy has been such a huge thing in television that the name has been referenced so many times, I don't think it sticks out as much as it once did.

To be fair, The Grudge 2 was just a bit part which she almost assuredly did to cash a nice paycheck 🙂

As for the Buffy movie, I have a lot of worries about how it might hurt the Buffy legacy, though I try to be optimistic. This has the chance, however slim, to re-spark public interest in Buffy and who knows what good might come of it. Just like Casino Royale or the new Star Trek movie had rebooted franchises which were on life support to all but the most die-hard fans, we might just get the same treatment 😀
 
And just think, when the movie comes out -good or bad- we'll have even more to talk about on here! 😛
 
I really don't see how a movie could ruin Buffy anymore than the first movie could. I mean, there was probably loads of people who were turned off by the movie when first hearing they were going to turn it into a TV show. But, that didn't stop the show from becoming as big as it did.

The only way I can see it ruining anything is if it was deemed canon, which I doubt would happen if Joss isn't involved.
 
I don't want my last memory of Buffy to be a movie which isn't done by the genius that is Joss Whedon and doesn't contain the great actors that made the show what it was. That's the last i'll say on the matter :smile3:
 
let's wait 10 years, and have a movie played by the children of the original cast:biggrin3:

time to reinvent Buffy? really? I think the only thing that supports that theory is the fact that we seem to be living in a society that is relying all too heavily on recycling used material. I look at the vast amounts of remakes being made, and sequels, and I wonder where the originality is.

I can't abide by the idea that Buffy needs to be rejuvenated. And, as far as I'm concerned, if this movie is made I'll have no interest in it. And I don't think there's a damn thing wrong with that. I don't think that, as a fan who grew up watching the series, I need to accept the fact someone else is regurgitating Joss' creation. And I think that releasing it onto a public that is so overexposed to second-rate vampire movies and series would do nothing but cheapen the franchise.

Obviously, you're entitled to your opinion, as we all are. So I hope this new Buffy proves to be everything you hope it to be. But it is not a fact and it is not necessary for the show to be reinvented. Implying that all the fans who are against this remake need to open their eyes to the fact, is ridiculous and just plain wrong.

i agree that Buffy doesn't need to be reinvented, why should it?
I may only trust a "reinvention" if they wait about 10 more years and then let J.J. Abrams do it. But by far I'd rather Joss be involved.
 
I haven't had a chance to go through all three threads, but if this movie does continue through - I'm happy! Really. At this moment it wouldn't break my heart if none of the original cast came back, they've all moved on and left us with a CLASSIC show that we can watch over and over again. Although some kind of cameo wouldn't hurt. 🙂

I know the news is kind of old, I hope there will be some newer developments soon! Honestly, I think it'll be interesting to see something different than what we're used too and if the war between new fans and old must come to pass. BRING IT!

If there's a war i will be firmly on the side of the old fans who won't accept new actors taking the parts of characters which belong to Sarah Michelle Gellar, James Marsters, David Boreanaz etc.

I'am firmly of the opinion that these actors are the only ones who should have the right to portray the Buffyverse characters. For me SMG is Buffy and the same could be said for every actor/actress involved with the original television. No remake film will change my mind on that.

I haven't read the hundreds of back-pages on this and its two preceding threads, just enough to get a seonse of it. What I wonder is: what would you prefer, hypothetically?

(a) A movie with Joss but with none of the original actors or characters (except Buffy)

or (b) a movie with most, hell all, of the TV cast but without Joss's involvement?

My personal answer is (a). Joss has such an amazing track record that I'd pretty much trust anything he puts his name on (or at least has put his name on in the past 13 years). If he were involved, he could take this from joke to good idea. Actually I'd love to see Joss given the chance to film his original script his way. Buffy isn't SMG any more than Buffy is Kristy Swanson. What Buffy is is Joss Whedon.

That the Kuzuis can even get away with this is an example of all that I hate about the global media and its hypocritical copyright laws. They like to paint their self-involved quests against Napster and the Pirate Bay and whatever else as being attempts to preserve the artist's integrity and respect the artist's creativity etc. but given the chance they'll rip off the artist way worse than any kid with a P2P computer programme could ever hope to do.

I think you're mistaken, the sans-Whedon Buffy Franchise consists of the characters "Buffy" and "Pike." So Buffy would be the only character that could be used without Mutant Enemy, even Joyce Summers is wholly owned by Joss.

I wouldn't want to take either option really. I'd properly take option B because i don't like the idea of someone else playing Buffy or any other character for that matter.

Although what Buffyverse fan said was slightly comforting in that only Buffy from the television show will be in the new film, the other characters won't be.

Why? Because that's what you're used to? Because the show was a lot more popular than the movie? The movie came first after all. Because Joss isn't involved?

I don't doubt for a second that I'll have some sort of problem with the new cast and not seeing the movie as the "real" Buffy if it ever gets made. But is that valid enough reason not to do anything more about the character? What do all our Battlestar Galactica fans think about that? The new series are bad since it isn't the original or have the original actors? What about the new Spiderman and Batman movies? They all had tv-shows long before these movies were made. There's a lot more but I'll let White avenger give more examples if needed. Or is ok with other things as long as it's not Buffy?
