New Buffy Movie Official Discussion Thread #3

A reporter from E! emailed Joss asking about his thoughts on the buffy reboot, hilarity ensued!.

"Kristin, I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths"”just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER." Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon."

If you make this movie Xander will lose his other eye

Giving the title role to someone like Fox might actually be a good idea on the studio's part. By disassociating the new movie as far as possible from Joss' universe, it might actually have a better chance of being accepted by the die hard Buffy fans. No Sunnydale, no shadowy group of old men who call themselves Watchers. No friends who are a plumber or a witch. No sister who's a ball of green energy. Just Buffy and Spike out hunting all of the critters of the night.

They could even change her name to Buffy Wynters, just to be sure that everyone knows the difference. And she could be tall.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I think Joss owns all the characters in the TV series except for Buffy and he's not gonna give the rights to the characters to a movie he doesn't support so no Buffy/Spike team up!

That was a joke. I have no bubble to burst.
I always thought this was a terrible idea, and it's been kicking about for a while now. But saying that, I didn't mind that Buffy finished after 7 seasons, it was a good number. I have the DVDs to watch, and I don't care if this new film makes new fans or even gives non-fans a bad impression of the tv show. If people are going to judge the show without seeing it, then it's their loss.

Thats pretty much where I am too. Its not like its going to change what we already have.

Sadly it was inevitable thanks to the twi-hards etc.

but I refuse to see it, a Buffy without SMG or ANY of the tv cast isn't buffy it's just a cash grab... Sadly I predict this movie WILL do well thanks to the fan base that thinks 'oo vampires maybe they'll sparkle I'LL SEE IT!'

IMO buffy (as a movie/tv context) is dead to me i'll just stick w/the dvd's, comics, and hopefully maybe one day a new videogame 😛

Buffy Movie Idea

Hi,

Like all of you I am concerned that Warner Bros and associates are about to destroy the living entity that we all love and care for BTVS

They sadly believe that it needs a reboot... this is not the case

the Buffy series has been idling as a comic book for a good time and has a solid fan base and as an avid reader of Season 8 and waiting for Season 9 i beleive that it is time to make Season 10 a movie for all the loyal fans.

I recently found out about the reboot for BTVS and was shocked but before that (jan 2011) i had come up with a great way to re-introduce the series back in to mainstream entertainment.

Now currently the last bit of Season 8 i read was at the point where
at the end Spike comes bursting through with that Machin ball and quotes "if you want to know about Twilight, you come talk to me" or something like that (reason i collect the TPB and not the issues)

From their is where my mind developed a way to bring Buffy back to the big screen

I am working on this writing project that has 3 stages (with a minor step that requires Joss Whedons 'OK')

Part 1 of project: develop scripts for 3 webisodes to launch on YouTube
Part 2 of Project: develop the Movie script
Part 3 of Project: develop the new 'Slayer' TV series

Coming from someone who hasn't yet read the comics, can we re-title this with SPOILER ALERT somewhere? 😛 I had to stop reading when I saw the thing about Spike @_@ so I'm not positive on where this post was going, but I would love to see Buffy on the big screen... just not by the same people who screwed it up before. 😛 I know everyone is all "Sarah Michelle Gellar IS Buffy", but I could deal w/a different cast so long as Joss (and company) was writing. OH I KNOW, Joss should do a Buffyless Buffy... something in the future after Buffy kicks it (legitly). He should do Fray!
Maybe I'm crazy.

That would be great!
Sadly Mr Whedon does not want to take part in a reboot of the series he has loyalty to the original cast.

Right now Warner Bros and Whit Anderson are in the works of rebooting it

i am doing my best to make this script available to prevent a reboot and bring the existing cast to the screen with a whole new story and twist

The thing you have to remember about something like this is...the cast don't want to be involved if Joss isn't involved. Some, like Emma Caulfield, don't want to be involved at all.

It's all well and good wanting to do something like this, and I commend your enthusiasm, I do, but something with the original cast is not going to work. While most, if not all, are against the Joss-less reboot, most of them have moved on with their careers and might not be interested in what some might see as a step back.

I'm not trying to destroy your dream, I just think you need to be very careful with how you proceed.

And FYI, as a loyal fan of the show since the first episode aired, I'm actually quite looking forward to the reboot.

I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer desperately needs a reboot. Season 8 was terrible, and to be honest, there is a lot about Season 7 that I didn't like. I think it will be really interesting to see what can be done with this.

If Doctor Who can do it, why can't Buffy?

I agree that the original stars are never going to come back for round 2, I don't know if I exactly want them back either. I love that they are so loyal to Joss, but really? Some of the way they have been talking about him is little over the top.

Do they really think that NO director/creator could do a good job of this? Do they really see Joss Whedon as some sort of God? Better then someone like Martin Scorsese? C'mon cast... Stop worshipping the ground he walks on.

I personally believe that, the less similarity the proposed movie, assuming that we ever do get to see one, has to the original series, the better the chances are that we'll like it. It will be far easier for the diehard Buffy fans to accept it, and the general movie going crowd would almost certainly like the new movie better that way. "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" is the story of a young girl totally out of character. Instead of being the damsel in distress, she's the kick ass demon fighter who is actually the rescuer and not the rescued. But a big part of that image is "young girl." As much as we may all love Sarah, she simply doesn't fit that mold anymore. There are almost certainly dozens, if not hundreds, of perfectly capable actresses available who ARE young girls, and who could do the role justice. I say, let some talented unknown create her own new Buffyverse and leave ours just the way that we like it.

Buffy Reboot Opinions?

So as die-hard fans of BtVs what do you think of the up and coming Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot of the 1992 movie?

Here's some quick points about the reboot and what's happening so far:
  1. Joss Whedon will not be a part of the movie
  2. None of the stars (SMG etc) will be a part of it
  3. Whit Anderson will be writing the script apparently, she hasn't written anything or at least nothing to the standard of BtVs
  4. Apparently it'll be 'darker'. Hello! Have they even watched the show?
  5. SMG won't be playing Buffy
  6. Giles, Willow, Xander or any of the cast won't be involved in the movie

😡 🙁

We already have a thread (several actually) about the remake... I'll merge this thread with the other.
I just think they can call it "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", but it wouldn't be "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". With all those points there is no way I can imagine what it will be like, but it surely won't be "Buffy".
