Agreed the pre Disney Starwars stuff is legendary and pretty timeless.
It's why people still watch Disney Starwars, even though it's terrible, and it's blatant they've milked it to death because of the vague hope that Timeless Quality of what came before will come back.
I think those fans are either too gullible or hoping in vain. More likely, Disney's strategy is to appeal to casual Star Wars fans or moviegoers. I know I personally have not watched any of Disney's Star Wars since the first one, "The Force Awakens," by J.J. Abrams, which was such a lazy re-tread of Episode IV without any substance or logic to it. I was calling it out back when that was still very popular and I was in an extreme minority. But by the next movie in the trilogy, most people had come to realize they had been duped.
It's just nostalgia-bait. Nobody really needs or cares for a Boba Fett tv show or a Obi-Wan tv show, if you think about it. Realistically speaking, there's more potential for something cool to happen in an original character who isn't bound by what has already been written into the canon. The writers have more freedom to do something original and compelling. With Obi-Wan, yes, people who hear the name and don't think about it get excited, but it's totally obvious there's not much of substance in that setting. We know how he got there (Clone Wars/prequels) and we know where he's going (Ep IV and Force Ghost) and now he's just stuck in a desert as a weird old hermit hoping to avoid the eyes of the Empire, look over Luke, and perhaps do some jedi training with Qui-Gon's ghost. Doesn't really sound like compelling tv.
And also writers today can't write. A lot of them, anyway.
But Hollywood of the last decade, perhaps more, is a totally risk-free environment of milking established IPs on brand name alone, and the general movie-going audience falls for it every single time. It is very rare for a revival or a reboot to live up to the magic of the original, yet somehow people still flock in droves to anything with brand name.
I mean a Super Mario movie? The video game that is famously all game and no story? I didn't even know there was one previously in the 90s, but apparently they had to take a lot of creative liberties to make it work for a movie. The new one is just videogame cutscenes, from what I can gather. Doesn't make any sense as a movie. Makes perfect sense as a business movie to profit off of brand name recognition.
It gets so ridiculous that the best picture of the year in sales is Barbie. Wtf? There's even a Hot Cheetos movie?
You'd think they're scraping the bottom of the barrel by this point.
On a more optimistic note, I highly recommend the recent Star Wars video game from a few years back,
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. It's not just the best thing to come out of the franchise since the Clone Wars tv show, but it actually is genuinely great in its own right, both as a game and a movie. Something that feels like it's from the "pre-Disney" era. I think the sequel to it came out earlier this year but I haven't tried it yet. There's also another game called
Star Wars: Outlaws from Ubisoft set to come out soon that looks very promising.
