New Slayer?

Buffy is a real slayer and all but Faith would be the one who had to die by the rules. But none of that matters anymore because Buffy and Willow changed the rules when Willow did that spell giving the slayer strengths and abilities to all potentials. So now there are slayer girls coming out of the wood work.

yeah it makes sense. I'm not sayin that they're not both
the real slayer. I'm just saying that Buffys death no longer
has the slayer activation button ;p

i don't remember if this was ever cleared up or not but, when Buffy died in season 5, how come there wasn't a new slayer called?

When Buffy died in S1 Kendra was called and the Slayer line was passed to her. When Kendra died in S2 Faith was called and the Slayer line was passed to her.

Two possible answers:

1. Buffy was no longer at the top of the slayer chain. Only that slayer's death inspires a change. That slayer would have been Faith.

2. Another slayer was called. We just never met her.

Marti Noxon already stated this: When a Slayer dies, she only gets ONE replacement. Kendra was Buffy's replacement the first time she died. Buffy doesn't get another. Faith has to die for another Slayer to be called.

Yeah, the "Marti Noxon quote". Usually it's used to prove the contention there can only be one slayer. Never thought I'd hear that one brought up again.

Were you hanging around Buffy forums about the time of Showtime?

There was a lot of lively debate concerning what Beljoxa's Eye said. People were always referencing the "Marti Noxon quote".

Here's what Beljoxa's eye said that started the debate:

BELJOXA'S EYE
The mystical forces surrounding the chosen line have become irrevocably altered, become unstable, vulnerable.

ANYA
Something The First did?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The First Evil did not cause the disruption, only seized upon it to extinguish the lives of the chosen forever.

GILES
Then what has caused the disruption? What is responsible for letting this happen?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The Slayer.

This led some of us to believe there was a corruption in the slayer line that was caused by two slayers existing in the world at the same time.

We used the following discussion between Giles and Anya as proof.

ANYA
(limping) Yeah, I just...I don't understand how Buffy's death mucked up the whole slayer mojo. You know, it's not like she hasn't died before.

GILES
It's not because she died. The Beljoxa's Eye was quite clear about that in its enigmatic way. It's because she lives...again. Buffy's not responsible for that.

ANYA
Oh... Willow and me and Xander and Tara. We're the ones who brought Buffy back. We're the reason The First is here, the reason those girls were murdered. No, it's our fault. Things would would've been better off if Buffy had just stayed dead. (walks off)

The opposing arguement to the "The Slayer line has been corrupted" arguement was it could not be possible. Two slayers could not exist at the same time. Marti Noxon said so, and they quoted " the Marti Noxon quote". They used this as prove Buffy was no longer the slayer.

They told us Giles remarks were unimportant because this was not the real Giles. This Giles was really The First, they said. You could tell, because he never touched anything.

"No", we said "You don't understand. We accept the "Marti Noxon quote", but it was made before Season 7. Season 7 changes everything.

I leave it to you to decide which one of us was correct, but I would like to leave you with this discussion between Faith and Buffy from End of Days:

BUFFY
I love my friends, and I'm grateful
for them, but yeah, that's the price.
Being the Slayer.

FAITH
There's only supposed to be one.
Maybe that's why you and I can never
get along. We're not supposed to
exist together.

Here's what I'm saying. The "Marti Noxon quote" no longer applies.

theres a lot of topics on this....i dont' know where they all are, but it looks like you've got everything cleared up

I always thought that when Buffy died no one reveiled it to anyone as the didnt want Sunnydale jeperdised by the underworld,Cause they didnt

Thanks nerd4hire, good stuff there.

However none of that says that Buffy is the current ACTIVE slayer in the sense of the slayer line. When Buffy died in Season 1 Prophecy Girl the mantle of the slayer was passed to Kendra, Buffy was revived by Xander using CPR, the transference of the mantle of the slayer in no way affected the previous slayer, she retained her strength, her powers, even her prophetic dreams but the one possible exception to keep the line intact, as a line, Buffy could not activate another slayer upon her 'next' death.

Season 2 What's My Line Pt 2
Willow: Is that even possible? I mean, two Slayers at the same time?

Giles: Not to my knowledge. Um, th-the new Slayer is only called after
the previous Slayer has died. Uh... (realizes) Oh, good Lord! You were
dead, Buffy.

Buffy: I was only gone for a minute.

Giles: Clearly it doesn't matter how long you were gone. You were
physically dead! Thus causing the activation of the, the next Slayer.
(nods toward Kendra)

Kendra: She died?

Buffy: Just a little.

Giles: She drowned, but she was revived.

Now Kendra died and that activated Faith, who was the active slayer, now this is not to say that Buffy wasn't a slayer.

Season 3 Faith, Hope and Trick
Cordelia: Not the horny thing. Yuck! But the two Slayer thing. There
was one, and then Buffy died for, like, two minutes, so then Kendra was
called, and then when she died, Faith was called.

Now Buffy died in Season 5 The Gift via contact with a dimensional rift/portal and then the ground.

Okay so in Season 6 Bargaining Willow, Tara, Xander and Anya invoke Osiris to resurrect Buffy using Magick. As Season 6 tells us she was bought back something other than human (Spike can hit her even with the chip is proof of that) but other than that she was bought back as she was when she died, a slayer. However Buffy's first death simple or a more natural way to die when compared to dimensional rifts, she drowned and was out for a couple of minutes before being revived by Xander and some handy CPR techniques. Buffy's second death was not simple, her soul was in heaven (or a paradise dimension) and her body was decaying in the ground for months. We don't know if the slayer power is tied with either body or soul but Season 7 Get It Done shows that the source of the power is a demon spirit.

Season 7 Get It Done
RED HAT SHADOW MAN
SUBTITLE: Herein lies your truest strength.

BLACK HAT SHADOW MAN
SUBTITLE: The energy of the demon. Its spirit.

BROWN HAT SHADOW MAN
SUBTITLE: Its heart.

BUFFY
This is how you"”

RED HAT SHADOW MAN
SUBTITLE: Created the slayer? (nods) Yes.

Now to be this indicates that the slayer power is not connected to either the body or the soul and is separate unto its self. So when Buffy died her slayerness for lack of a better term was just released, possibly flowing back into the slayer line, possibly just dissipating.

Now when Willow and the others used Magick to resurrect Buffy they wanted to recreate her as she was before she died, so they needed her body (tick in that box as it was still in the ground), her soul (they pulled it out of heaven) and the slayerness, which they would have to get from somewhere and if either of the options of what happened to it above are right then they have to get it from the slayer power line. So anyway they resurrect Buffy, she still has the strength and all of the slayer. No other slayer appears in Sunnydale (doesn't count out that she could be somewhere else). Now Season 7 starts and the First Evil starts trying to irradicate the slayer line by wiping out the Potentials, Buffy and Faith.

Season 7 Showtime
GILES
If The First has been around for all time, then why hasn't it attempted something like this before? Why now?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The opportunity has only recently presented itself.

GILES
Opportunity?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The mystical forces surrounding the chosen line have become irrevocably altered, become unstable, vulnerable.

ANYA
Something The First did?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The First Evil did not cause the disruption, only seized upon it to extinguish the lives of the chosen forever.

GILES
Then what has caused the disruption? What"”what is responsible for letting this happen?

BELJOXA'S EYE
The slayer.

So there is a disruption in the chosen line, ie the slayer line and it has been unstable and vunerable and the slayer is the cause. Note please that it doesn't say which slayer, the next quote just assumes it means Buffy and that maybe logical but by NO means stated, Faith's incarceration however unlikely could have caused it, or her turn to the Dark Side, please also note that since the First Evil is for all intents and purposes timeless the line 'The opportunity has only recently presented itself.' While not meaningless can be interpreted to mean anything in the entire 7 seasons of Buffy.

Season 7 Showtime
GILES
Are you all right?

ANYA
(limping) Yeah, I just"”I don't understand how Buffy's death mucked up the whole slayer mojo. You know, it's not like she hasn't died before.

GILES
It's not because she died. The Beljoxa's Eye was quite clear about that in its enigmatic way. It's because she lives. Again. Buffy's not responsible for that.

ANYA
Oh. Oh. Willow and me and Xander and Tara. We're the ones who brought Buffy back. We're"”we're the reason The First is here, the reason those girls were murdered. No, it's our fault. The would would've been better off if Buffy had just stayed dead. (walks off)

Here we have Giles and Anya assuming the disruption has been caused by Buffy living again and Anya even says that it was herself, Willow, Xander and Tara who are the reason, so the spell had something to do with the slayer line being made unstable. If when resurrecting Buffy they needed the slayer portion and took it from the slayer line wouldn't that have weakened it. Anyway in Season 7 they find the Scythe, the weapon of the slayer, linked with the slayer and using it to channel magicks they activate all the potential slayers, note that Buffy and Faith didn't appear to experience any powerloss whatsoever. Now this move basically ended any weakness in the slayer line because it wasn't a line anymore, with every potential active at the same time it became a tree (I am assuming that those newly activated slayers could activate others upon their deaths). So what I am saying is nothing that either Giles or Beljoxas Eye said detracts from the statement that Buffy is not the current active slayer and so can't activate another upon her death. I am sure there are flaws in that arguement so I await someone to point them out but I am tired🙂

I need to think a little about the possible reason for the slayer line to be weakened due to Buffy's resurrection. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean by "current active slayer".

There is a slayer line created thousands of years ago by the Shadowmen from a girl who may or may not have already been imbued with some kind of mystical power. They enforced demon power upon her which added to her strength.

The Shadowmen became the Watchers. The Guardian tells us this.

The one slayer rule was artifically created by the Shadowmen. Buffy tells us this when she says:

What if you could have that power now?. All of you. In every
generation one Slayer is born because
a bunch of guys that died thousands
of years ago made up that rule.

True the Watchers still seem to recognize the one slayer rule. In Never Leave Me Quentin Travers doesn't refer to Bufffy as The Slayer. He calls her The Girl.

Others of us do still think of Buffy as The Slayer. I do. Faith, Buffy, the Scoobies, every demon in Sunnydale, probably The First, and it would seem the crew at Mutant Enemy all recognize Buffy as The Slayer. We call her The Slayer over and over again.

Are you saying we're wrong? Nothing you've said explains why.

What I mean is the slayer that by her death can activate another.

No offense to Buffy but how does she know that, to my knowledge she was never told by the Shadowmen or the Guardian that they made the rule, they created the slayer but they never said they made the rule, I mean wouldn't you think more than one slayer would be better.

True the Watchers still seem to recognize the one slayer rule. In Never Leave Me Quentin Travers doesn't refer to Bufffy as The Slayer. He calls her The Girl.

Yeah they do, it's possible they know that one slayer is active in the sense of when she dies another is called and the other slayer is not active in that sense but still fighting. If I may bring in the comic and book series. Lucy Hanover the mid 19th Century slayer who guards the ghost roads can possess people and retains her slayer strength when she does so, both India Cohen and Kendra do the same in The Book of Fours. There leaving the bodies afterward do not cause a new slayer to be activated, I think the same goes for Buffy except her physical resurrection is a bit more permanent.

Others of us to still think of Buffy as The Slayer. I do. Faith, Buffy, the Scoobies, every demon in Sunnydale, probably The First, and it would seem the crew at Mutant Enemy all recognize Buffy as The Slayer. We call her The Slayer over and over again.

No I am not, she is the slayer or more accurately now a slayer, Buffy and the Scoobies have no way of knowing whether Buffy dying can activate another slayer nor do the demons, the First maybe but only if it can see the slayer line and all its parts.

I apologise I am having trouble putting what I am thinking down into words which makes my explanations suck. 🙂

Not to worry. I think you're doing a great job. You're raising some fascinating points.

I think I understand now, what you mean by current active slayer. You mean the Watcher slayer. Is that correct?

By that I mean the slayer who meets the artificial, Shadowmen created rules for the slayer line.

I'm not sure if that's what you're saying, because you suggested we can't believe Buffy knows what she's talking about when she suggests Shadowmen/Watcher rules were injected into the slayer line.

I think we can believe her, because later in Chosen she manipulates those rules to create a slayer line that does not pass down from slayer to slayer. To do that she would have to have some knowledge of the mechanics involved.

Here's the problem when interpreting the rules of the slayer line: There are a lot of things we do know, or can logically infer, but at the same time there are a lot of things we don't know. For instance we don't know if the first slayer had any kind of power before the Shadowmen forced demon power into her. Why did they select her? We don't even know for an absolute positive fact if there can be another slayer out there created after Buffy died at the end of S-5 (possibly 2, because she flatlined another time in S-6).

I think Whedon leaves a lot of this stuff open, because it allows him to reintepret the rules in the future.

For now though, I think we have no choice, but to interpret things the way they're presented by the current crop of writers.

By that interpretation everyone is calling Buffy THE Slayer. I'm not sure exactly what that means. I know it's not THE Watcher slayer, nevertheless if Giles calls her THE
Slayer, I'm going to also. Faith is often called A Slayer, but I can't remember a time when she was ever called THE by anyone.

To veer away from that subject for a sec though, you bring up another interesting point. You were wondering can you bring up evidence from other media to add credibility to a discussion concerning the TV Series. I sometimes wonder about that also. Here's my opinion on the subject:

I think it's OK providing the last word on the Buffyverse, seems to be authorized by Joss Whedon. In my opinion his vision of said "verse" is ultimately the only one we can take as canon.

This should probably include stuff like the original script for the first movie, BTVS, sometimes Angel, and possibly the comic series Fray.

I've yet to see any proof the book series meets the criteria. They seem to have their own agenda. The upcoming stuff such as the cartoon series, or Ripper may or may not. We have yet to see. I'd be hesitant to take interviews with Joss and his staff too seriously. They've been proven to lie, for their own mysterious, and devious purposes.

Almost yes, I am thinking of the slayer line like a line on a piece of paper with dots on it indicating every slayer, by the current active slayer I would mean the last dot on that line (which has become null and void since Season 7 Chosen but hey🙂)

This is it though, the rules make no sense from the Shadowmen's point of view, they are creating a warrior to fight evil but they only allow one to exist at a time, wouldn't more than one be better (I know it could be said they wanted to control her and controlling more would be difficult at best but they knew what was happening, how many vampires and demons there were, saying only one for control reasons alone is madness and stupidity). The only way I think it makes sense is if something else has made it so there is only one slayer at a time, the demon spirit maybe, a demon is more often than not evil and wouldn't want more than one warrior fighting evil. Heck it could have been the first imposing it's will to make sure evil always had the greater numbers. Do you see where I am coming from, having one warrior is idiocy, what would have happened if she turned bad like Faith, there would be no-one. I can't see the Shadowmen making this rule themselves, even if they were mindful of the control aspect two or three would have been better.

As for Buffy manipulating the mechanics of the slayer line, she was told that the Scythe was connected to the slayer line, she knew that slayers were connected and she new there were potential slayers and it is logical to assume that they are also connected to the slayer line. For someone who is used to magick it is not impossible for her to join the dots and realise that the scythe can be used to transmit the power of the slayer to all the potentials. She only need know these things, she didn't need to know nor I believe did she properly know, only believed, that the shadowmen created the one slayer rule

Very true, we don't know but if the first slayer had any type of power before she had the demon spirit forced into her, but from what we have seen she wasn't really anymore powerful than slayers after her and we know buffy doesn't have any more powers other than those of the slayer (Season 3 Helpless). You are right she did flatline in Season 6, I find it difficult to believe that if they existed neither of them came to sunnydale

I think Whedon leaves a lot of this stuff open, because it allows him to reintepret the rules in the future.

For now though, I think we have no choice, but to interpret things the way they're presented by the current crop of writers.

Faith was called the Slayer in Angel Season 4 Salvage both by Wesley

WESLEY
Everyone, this is Faith, the vampire slayer.

and a vampire which Angelus overhears

VAMPIRE 3
The slayer? You sure?

I agree, as long as its not contradicted by the show or anything written by Joss then it can be used to backup arguements, probably not as the sole basis for a defense though🙂

You know, it's irritating, yet at the same time fun... When they don't lay out the rules in black and white, all you can do is quess.

I can't flat out say you're wrong, all I can do is tell you how my theory differs from yours.

As far as the connect the dots thing goes, we can only connect them from the time the Shadowmen either create, or pervert the slayer line (depending on which interpretation you want to accept).

It's possible the Shadowmen created the Slayer line. It's also possible they only corrupted it to serve their purposes.

I prefer to believe the latter. The Shadowmen appear to be Shaman's. A Shaman would want to protect his own status as the control between the human world and the demon world.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you suggested this is why they only wanted one slayer.

Here's another interesting thing we don't know. We don't know how much power the Shadowmen/Watchers actually had. We don't know to what extent they themselves battled with the demon world. We only know they appeared to want a slayer guarding the Hellmouth. It may be, this is who THE Slayer actually is (the one who guards the Hellmouth).

Nevertheless from the point of the Shadowmen injecting demon power into the First Slayer, until the Gift we can connect the dots. After that we can't with 100% certainty.

I seriously doubt there are any more slayers floating around as a result of Buffy's deaths, but hey Joss has surprised me before, and it's possible given what we don't know.

I like that theory, humans being what they are flawed typically those with power will not use it for the good of mankind as much as for gaining status, retaining power and then increasing power, helping mankind is a side affect almost. So the Shamans and Mages battling the demons was a way for them to gain power, they realised that doing it themselves was risky to them and so they distorted a noble line of warrior women who were actually heroes, perhaps the slayers while being warriors weren't human but rather polar opposite to demons, almost being described as angels and they captured this girl and infested her with the demon spirit, reducing her to a more human level so they could control her. Interesting idea that the Shadowmen perverted the slayer line very cool

Well after the events of Season 7 Chosen, who could care if there are two more slayers running around due to Buffy's 'deaths' there are so many it makes little difference😀
