off topic but your mum doesn't like Buffy because she's a christian ? what is it that she has a problem with? I'm just wondering cos there are plenty of christians on this board. Is it the magic? cos I saw Jesus Camp and they had some issues with Harry Potter.
Yeah, I know. I'm a Christian but I don't believe the really hardcore stuff. Some Christians believe that once you open yourself up to these things you are opening some sort of spirtiual door and letting demons in, yada, yada, yada. I don't know, maybe I'm just not letting myself understand it. It's partly the magic, because this magic although it's not that realistic, it's more realistic than the magic in Harry Potter. Some Christians have a huge problem with that stuff. I don't understand it. My Mum doesn't like Harry Potter so much either. Buffy was the second blow, I got into Harry Potter first and kept it from her for like a month
😀
I'm kind of glad my happiness has opened a little discussion, it's interesting to hear what others think about this.
Being English (where Atheism is more commonplace then any particular religion) I find it difficult to get my head round this attitude. As a matter of fact it scares me, I find it very uncomfortable when people try to force their beliefs (or non-beliefs) upon people in a way that effects their lives. Although as you say it's great your mother doesn't actually do this but it seems it appears she is in the minority. I'm not really looking to have kids but if I did I'd want them to make up their own mind and not force my Atheist beliefs upon them. Way back in the 60's John Lennon claimed that The Beatles were bigger then Jesus- I can completely understand why America reacted in such a shocked way if what you hint at is widespread but over here in England that would have been a statement the majority of the country would have agreed with and caused very little hassle. Do the limitations of being Christian upset you at all or do you not really care? I'm quite interested to hear what you think.
Well,
😀 this is interesting. I live in New Zealand and since we are such as mall country we aren't united in any beliefs, it's spread. But most of the Christians I have met here believe the same as my Mum, it's weird. But I wouldn't want to force any beliefs on my children either, I'd like them to deal with things in their own way.
But onto your question. The limitations never bothered me, not for years and years. There were things like I wasn't allowed to watch Harry Potter and once we read the first book in school and I was a good child and left the room to read a book of my own. There were also things like, if we had stuff about other beliefs about how the world came about in our homework I wouldn't have to do it. It's weird, but that's just how my family has worked. My Dad's not a Christian though, so that's good. But the limitations really didn't concern me until a few years ago. I think it was Wizards of Waverly Place which sounds so sad but I did used to watch it. But my Mum didn't want me to, yada, yada, yada. Slowly she started watching the show and realized how corny it was and that there was nothing bad about it, she couldn't even argue with that. Then there was Harry Potter and I just sort of was like "Mum, I'm 15 years old and I should be allowed to make my own descions about what I watch and what I do". So, once Buffy came along she just has to deal. But I do hate the restrictions and I try to make it clear to my family that I am at this stage where I have to be my own person and sort things out myself. If I come back to their way of thinking one day then I will have come there on my own.
So yeah,
😀 That's my slightly long-winded answer.
