So, which scenes in the show started you thinking about a particular non-canon 'ship, if any.
What little spark between two characters set the wheels turning in your head? (in some cases even before it actually became canon.)
At what point did you think 'These two would make such a great/sweet/hot an' sweaty couple, why aren't they together already?'

Let's try and keep this fun/light okay? No 'ship bashing. 🙂

The scene when Faith, in Buffy's body, came on to Spike in Season 4 always seemed to me to have been a good choice. They could have been a great Bonnie & Clyde couple if Spike hadn't had the chip back then, and when Faith was coming on to Spike in the basement in Season 7 (and I most definitely think that's what the "long incarceration" story was about) that just about sealed it, with Buffy's obvious jealousy just putting the cherry on top.

Giles and Joyce always seemed to me would have worked out very well, and the obvious scene for that would have been from "Band Candy," when they were taken back to their teenaged personalities, but, actually, I think that I had always seen them as a potential couple.

And I know that a lot of people are going to say Buffy and Faith, and I can agree to a certain extent, but I could always see them more as partners, like the Winchester brothers, than as lovers. No particular scene for this one, either, just the feeling that I got whenever I saw the two together.

oh, yeah - Spike and Faith are nuclear, and I always wanted Giles and Joyce.
Apologies to Topher - we've been talking about this. I'm putting in our last letter because it's really on topic.

A giant what-if, but I still don't think it was the reason that the relationship was terminated, the reason was...drama/angst!. Like pretty much anything else in the Jossverse, hardly anybody gets a happy relationship/ending.

Yeah, once they "get married" there is only one way to go - torture and angst. And I just don't have it in me to watch more Angel angsting over a woman. But I still like them - like their dynamic. At least they didn't get ruined with over exposure.

I always forget Nina to be honest.
To me the two big passions in Angel's life were Buffy and Darla, both set him on his path and shaped him, somewhat, into who he is now.
There are other relationships that matter of course (Doyle, Cordelia, Faith, Connor) and all those have shaped Angel in some way, but if we're taking passion then its thoes two little blonde girls that I tend to think of.

Darla and Buffy - yes. A mirror of good and evil. His passion with Darla was damn epic, and he couldn't resist her. Buffy was a different kind of passion. Darla killed him, and Buffy brought him back to life. She was Spike's lodestone too. I tend to think she didn't love him, at least not the way he wanted. But I read somewhere - Buffy f*cked the soul out of Angel and then f*cked one into Spike. She was the central figure of who they both are now.

I'd add in a small blonde manpire. Look at it this way - Angel staked Darla, staked Penn, and set fire to Darla and Dru. He protected Spike on the sub, during Lover's Walk he put himself between Spike and Buffy's stake-and I'm sure Angel could have let Spike get staked and found Willow etc if he wanted. Hell, he even took a stake for him when Illyria killed them all. Look at the two of them after "Why We Fight" staring out the window. Deep link there.

I know that JM thought that they were gonna go the romantic route with him and Fred, but I think it was just to give Spike a solid connection outside of Angel and to have him be as affected/invested as the rest of the gang when Fred starts to die.
For my money Fred/Wesley was always meant to be. (Spike/Illyria on the other hand..)

Ick - I really think fanfic when I play with pairings. I mean I can believe it during the story but wouldn't want it in the show. I came up with Fred because she was the last woman alive in the group. No - Spike/Fred would have no spark. But I ship Lilah/Wesley all the way. Wesley/Fred was sweet and romantic, and tragic. But Wesley and Lilah were delicious. They really enjoyed the challenge of each other, and the sex looked the best in the entire verse. They were interesting and hot - one of the most intriguing match-ups.

I know a lot of people have a big problem with Angel's portrayal when he shows up in 'Chosen', just after losing Cordy and his son. I look at it this way; Angel going to see Buffy was partly love, but also partly nostalgia, (and also delivering the amulet/helping.) instead of focussing on all his own crap life he could relax and rebond with his old flame (which is what makes his petulant jealously about Spike so realistic/funny.) and why I don't think he wants to dump all his problems on Buffy in the middle of an apocalypse- that's just being needy- also I don't think anybody even knows about Conner (because of the spell), but I guess he could've mentioned Cordelia to her. (Just to see Buffy get jealous/incredulous in turn) I sure hope Buffy finds out that Angel has had other love interests besides her.

That feels like good rationalizations to me. Not the foundation of a good relationship. Kinda like they are in love as long as they are apart - but honesty and vulnerability go out the window when they are together. I would prefer something closer to the Buffy/Angel in the cemetery after Joyce died. I always figured that Angel was half suicidal when he reached Sunnydale but that is a different thread.

The whole staying apart thing actually blows a hole in the ship - what will happen in a few years that will make a relationship safe? Shanshu? I think they should have had more connection - not avoided it. Of course, it's in the cracks like this where stories are born.

I always thought that Angel/Doyle and Angel/Lindsey are fun ships. (I tend to go where the chemistry leads ...) and I agree that Angelus/Spike is definitly canon, don't know if Angel thinks about Spike that way though. It's a nice thought

Angelus and Spike screwed each other in a whole lot of ways - I doubt there was ever romance but I'm sure there was sex, and more than one time. (Btw - Spike's line is "that one...." which could be any amount of time in Spike speak.) Also - I kinda doubt Spike sees shagging as all that intimate. Try it on for size "Harmony and I were intimate." - nah. Friendly, caring and intimate sex was probably rare - at least until they got their souls and probably after.

Let me put it this way - if Angel and Buffy spent 30 years together, Spike would be there when she died to make sure Angel didn't take an afternoon stroll. That is love. Under all the snark and complaining, there is a bond there. The humans are mayfly - in some ways they only have each other.

Quote:
I tend to see Angel/Spike like Buffy/Faith, two characters who are connected/understand each other on a level nobody else can match- they are the only two in their particular situation, and they really tend to fizz off each other when their onscreen together, leading to some truly memorable scenes.

Yeah - Buffy/Faith - not my cup of tea but I can really see it. Even once the potentials are activated, Buffy and Faith share a history, and some definite chemistry!

We are way off topic - but this is fun. How do you get a thread split here? I'd love to do one on fanfic ships. See what different pairs people are open to.

Well I'm mainly into male slash pairings as follows.

Giles/Spike

Giles/Ethan

Spike/Angel

Spike/Wesley

Spike/Xander

Riley/Spike

Linsey/Spike

But then my 'kink' is for more darker kind of pairings. 😀

I could recommend some damn good fic with those pairings - and not for the faint of heart. Love That Dares would be the first site, and there are others even stronger.

I like Spangel, Spesley, and Spiles, primarily. I've read Spander - which is hugely popular but I just can't see it. Though the look when whatshername asks 'has everyone here slept with each other" does give one pause, as well as the resounding lack of denial.

Right now I'm into readin x-over fic with supernatural and btvs or AtS - Spike and Dean Winchester as the ship. Yeah it's a reach but there are some damn good writers. Most of all I just like good writing. I read het pairing for a while but I love slash.

Oh don't worry I've read a load of NC17/bondage type fics with the above pairing, mainly from writers based on good old Live Journal. 😀

I used to read het, but long since gave that up to read 'male on male' action and I've not looked back since. *g*

Oh imo that was the writers tipping a wink to the (back then) massive fanbase there was for that pairing. Something Nick Brendon often talked about.

Yeah - LJ is the best site for fic! Whichclothes (a professional writer), as well as glassdarkly.
Lots of male slashy goodness- which is nice to see. 🙂

I'm thinking specific scenes here though, like for example Angel/Lindsey and their interactions in 'Five By Five' where Angel infiltrate W&H- they zing really well off each other and when Lindsey says 'Just when I think I've got you figured out, you show up in a suit.' I thought he so wants to date him. 🙂

Buffy/Faith obviously, but my thinking on this became clear in 'Bad Girls' when Faith draws that heart an the window and smiles at her, and Buffy's all pouty and sad becasue she has to study and can't go and play slayer...then there was the dancing after they raided that nest. (Beats Buffy's sexy dance with Xander all to hell.) 😀 These two so work well together. *sigh*

Giles/Ethen: pretty much from when Ethen says 'Hello Ripper' I naturally assumed that they had a thing back in the day, all that sex, drugs and rock and roll, plus magic. I bet Ripper did some experimenting of the non-magical kind.

Not really in a sex way but I always thought Buffy/Cordelia in 'Homecoming' was pretty much as close to friends as they ever got- realising and understanding each other's strengths and bravery, what they both want out of life/the whole high school experience. Unfortunatly Xander/Willow put an end to that. 🙁

Willow/Anya in 'Same Time, Same Place' 'It did get a little sexy there didn't it?' and then Willow's reactions. 🙂

Wesley/Angel: My thinking on this kinda happened in 'First Impressions' where Angel wakes up from his Darla dream and jumps Wesley, strangling him, and then Wes comments something 'um, Angel, about the naked thing.'- this coupled with Wesley's hero-worship of Angel at the time...

'Out Of My Mind' I swear Buffy and Graham have more chemisty in the 'I'll kick your ass' scene than pretty much any Buffy/Riley scene. Why did Buffy have to go for silly floppy fringe instead of cleft-chin?

I think Giles/Ethan is damn near canon! I love the scene in Halloween when Giles dispassionately beats the crap out of Ethan.
We spoke about it in another thread but Spike/Riley is a pairing that has spawned some great fic, as has Angel/Riley. With non-canon ships I think that antagonising dynamic works really well. Especially when they have another character in common.

Which brings me to, Buffy/Nina. There's only a handful of fic around for these two but it has been some of the best character driven stuffy I've read, especially in relation to Angel. Having both of their perspectives of him is great.

I've read some great Buffy/Oz and Angel/Oz. Odd I know but Oz is a great character to write from because he is so aware of what's around him, who people are and what they mean to each other. He has a great perspective, plus the fic writer who wrote the fics I read is gifted.

Buffy/Oz is certainly an interesting pairing. And aout of all the Scoobies I always imagined Oz and Angel clicked the best.

Got any links to the Buffy/Nina fics? Sounded interesting :)
I'm going to go with Buffy/Faith. I like the scene in the Bronze at the beginning of 'Revelations' when the gang is asking if Buffy has new boyfriend and she tells them "I wouldn't call it dating but I am seeing someone, tonight even." And then Faith comes up and puts her arm around Buffy.

Oh the other one I thought of was Anya and Spike in 'Where The Wild Things Are'. I like to think this is partly why they hook up in 'Entropy'. I think they have good comedic chemistry. They bond over being a demon and killing people but now they are heartbroken and drinking their sorrows away. I just like it and think they actually go well and make sense as a couple.

Agreed about Anya/Spike in 'WTWTA' that was some good chemistry, although we see the reality in 'Entrophy' and its not so pretty. 🙁

Giles and Anya after they kiss in 'Tabula Rasa' is great- they have really good chemistry and seem awfully awkward around each other after that kiss. 🙂

Faith/Wesley- I never really got the whole Buffy/Giles romance aspect, it's way too incest-y for me, but the dynamic between Faith and Wesley has a very interesting feel to it.
Their interactions in 'Five By Five' (the weirdly intimate torture scene) and then much later in 'Salvage/Release' (specifically how Wesley treats Faith after she's been badly hurt by the Beast) show how much they've changed, almost reversed roles- with Faith (seemingly) becoming the more unstable/grounded one. They are two damaged people who work well together, and who kind of 'click' right away. If Wesley wasn't dead an' all I'd say he'd be a good match for Faith in the comics.

Spike/Illyria- 'I wish to keep Spike as my pet.' Fun. Although I seriously think unsouled Spike would totally fall for Illyria, soulled Spike maybe has too much dignity to be in a relationship with her. (not much, just enough. 🙂)

Forest/Riley- how else do you explain half of what Forest does and or says unless he's got a huge man-crush on Riley. 😉

The only pairing I've read from BtVS with any sort of regularity is Spike/Xander. In fact, there is one Spander fic I've read dozens of times over the last ten years and I still maintain it is the greatest fic I have ever read in any fandom. It's just such a unique idea, so very character driven and wonderfully written - even if Riley doesn't come out of it in the best light, lol.

I'm not much for shipping in this fandom, I never have been and I honestly can't tell you why I was so attracted to reading Spander fics - though I do read fics from other fandoms, mostly m/m. So I haven't read a lot of fic and I don't really have any non-canon ships. Though I will agree with Kean; that Buffy/Oz intrigues me, but more on a friendship scale than anything romantic.

The stuff I've read is basically a friends with benefits type situation but not as shallow as that sounds. The friendship is sincere and so is the romantic side, it just isn't a love story. Just two people fitting together at a specific time in their lives. It's really refreshing.

Fuffy is my only non-canon ship... but again I think this ship is pretty canon anyway. Call me delusional, I don't care!

For me, it was definitely the heart in the window that did it.

Can anyone point to a scene and say- 'This is where I see an attraction between these two?', because honestly, and I'm not trying to be nasty or anything, I'm mystified by this pairing. 😕

I can see Xander being attracted at a guy, and it could be argued that he might find Spike physically appealing (although he might just be joking and/or comfortable enough with his sexuality to admit that sort of thing.) but he hates vampires, a lot.
In S6 he finds the idea of Buffy sleeping with Spike as really disgusting (and, unlike with Angel its not a jealousy thing.) and when Spike gets a soul they hardly share any screen time in which to build any chemistry.

This is genuine interest here, I'd like to know where it comes from- although I do admit I get a real kick out of their odd couple 'roomie' relationship in S4. 🙂

Imo It depends on the fan writer. A really good one will convince you that this pairing is a variable one.

Thats the fun of fanfic you don't have to stick to the confines of what went on in the show. 😀

I understand that great fan-fic can find a connection between two characters, and that's great.
But what, on the show, inspired the pairing? Was it something Xander said or was it a specific scene between him and Spike?

Most non-canon pairings intrigue me more than actual canon, and I just wondered where the thinking on these two came from. 🙂

Many don't need a reason. Thats how the game is played imo. 😀

As to scenes on the show, well there's the whole 'Spike being tied to achair and living with Xander' in season 4 bit, and Spike and Xanders brief scenes together in Spiral.

Also dialogue like this helps:

XANDER
No one is judging you. It's
understandable. Spike is strong and
mysterious and sort of compact but
well-muscled-

BUFFY
I am not having sex with Spike, but
I'm starting to think you are

While Xander hates vampires and Spike doesn't even think about Xander, a writer can develop a relationship between them through several chapters. Take Buffy/Spike for example, it's impossible to pair them in S2: Buffy was so into Angel and Spike was so into Drusilla and they hated each other, but after seasons of development they grew to love each other. That's how Spander can happen.

I think people saw the potential in Hush, the "moist and delicious" scene between Xander and Spike. The "Is there anyone here who hasn't slept together?" and then Xander and Spike stare at each other.

My personal experience, I used to read Spander fanfic before watching the show - watched an episode here and there- and I didn't even know what Spike looked like. 😀 Then S4 aired in my country and I was so disappointed to know that Spander wasn't canon. Hee.

If anyone's interested here is a funny sort-of comic episodes ( five episodes ) of how S4 should have happened with Spander:
