I know a lot of people here in previous threads has expressed that they can be shy in social situations. I can too, and even though I've gotten a lot more outgoing the last couple of years I still feel that a part of me is holding back, and I don't like that.

I thought it would be nice idea to support each other in overcoming this, share different strategies and maybe talk about specific or general situations and give each other advise

Is anyone with me? 🙂

I always saw myself as shy. But when I started working, I realized I was super outgoing with the customers. I didn't get why I was so unshy with strangers and more shy with the other people. Then I realized it was because the customers I saw once and then goodbye (unless they were regular). On the other hand, people I meet and am supposed to socially bond with, I could never be outgoing at all with those. I came to realize it was because when it's a stranger, you just don't care if he thinks you are weird, but if it is someone you're supposed to get to know, well there is always the risk for you to be rejected.

I'm getting better about that, but I see myself as, say, a little dog. You know, the first time a dog sees a person, he just barks or try to eat their shoes. But when the dog sees the person more, it gets used to the person. I'm a little bit like that. When I get used to people I can afford to be more like myself, because I know who thinks "She's weird, I like her" and who thinks "She's weird, I'd rather not stay with her too long".

And I think in many cases, shyness is due to the fear of being rejected or immediately put in a box. The better attitude would be to not care and just go for it, but it takes practice!

Totally agreed, my friend.

I agree with all of this, you're so smart. In all the jobs I've had I've always been very outgoing. The same with friends or friends of friends. But when it comes to people I HAVE to get to know, like classmates or my husbands friends I get shy. Probably due to fear of rejection, but also the fact that I feel there's a lot of pressure in these social situations and that if I don't become friends with these groups of people I'll be forced to sit on my own or make my husband disappointed. The little dog thing is totally true, I'm like that too! I usually don't have that much of a problem in making friends, and it almost never really end up with me sitting alone or being rejected, but I have a hard time with bonding with people right away, the way many others can. I think this also comes from the fact that I want to make long term friends and don't really see the point in just chit chatting. Or, of course I see the point, I just have really high expectations of people I meet and don't like to keep things on a superficial level. Lol, look at me, going all Freud on myself 😀

I Haven't Overcome Being Shy Yet. I'm Very Shy When You First Met Me, But Once You Get To Know Me I Never Shut Up LOL 😀

I AGREE!!!

I'm pretty outgoing, mostly i can't stop talking when i meet someone new i don't know. It just depends really....... but in general i am shy, if that makes sense? Some situations are different, just depends lol. I put on a 'front' mosttimes, cause most of the time i get stressed and have panic attacks when i'm alone. I'm happier around others i suppose, so i'm not really shy.. i just hate when other people are shy but it comes across as them being ignorant',, maybe i talk too much. 😛 And omg, i totally agree about being 'shy' towards the people who you actually know, you act more shy towards them rather than random folk you just meet for the first time. Totally agree with that, i find that i can't be myself around the people i hang about with from class. :/

I am 100% like you I think! Adn by the way - I adore your banner!
I was a very shy person, so I did two things when I went to college to try to get the most out of my time there:

1) I got a job waiting tables. It was excruciating at first, but once I got comfortable in the place, I became great at my job and much more confident when speaking to people.

2) I made it a point to strike up conversations with people around campus (in the elevator, etc.) and it was so awkward at first. My face was red, I'm sure, for my whole freshman year. I made tons of friends though, and had a great time. I even met my now-fiance by striking up a conversation standing outside our dorm!

Long story short (too late), I actually became very outgoing! Many years later, I've now reverted back to being shy a bit after spending a year unemployed and mostly alone in 2009, but I'm getting back into the outgoing game again!

That's great advice! And yay you for being so brave to overcome this! I'm sure you'll be back to your outgoing self soon again!
Personally, i am shy with people i don't know, and once i get to know you, if i like you, then i will talk to you, and be me 😀. But if i don't, i usually just ignore you, or not laugh at your jokes... i guess its mean in some situations, but i want to hang out with people i enjoy hanging out with. If its me a load of my friends and one person i don't know or dont like. I really cant be myself, because i have the constant thought that they are gonna judge me on eveything i do :/. Oh and im fine around strangers, its just people who I dont like that much, or havent gotten to know properly, who are there to hang out with me. Make me shy 😛 x

lawl, i remember you and your shyness :p
As a general rule, I'm insanely shy. Shyness is something I find difficult to overcome; I'm not good around new people, and I'm certainly not good when it comes to being myself around people whom I expect to judge me. I always fear I'll slip up and make a mistake, so until I'm comfortable around people, I'm shy. I'm no where near as shy as I used to be, drama has really helped me come out of my shell, but I don't think I'll ever be a confident, out going person. It's hard for me, hard to pretend like I'm completely fine in my own skin, when I'm pretty introverted and therefore shy. I've found, sometimes, though, in social situations, if I pretend I'm acting a part, it makes me a lot less shy - It doesn't always work, but sometimes, it really gets me by.

Drama has definitely increased my confidence as well.. Except the fact im getting a "D" in it ¬.¬.

please don't be shy! :p And i'm not confident at all and i'm quite outgoing:)
i just hate when other people are shy but it comes across as them being ignorant'/

I know what you mean by this. But I guess it may be a way of protection oneself, like "You can't reject me if I reject you first".

I used to think just like you a few years ago! But, I know it sounds like a cliché, but most people really are far to busy worrying about how they themselves are coming across that they don't have time to judge you. 🙂 Also, most people really like when other people talk to them and are nice. I think all people are insecure on some level, even the people that seems really confident and outgoing, and someone new talking to you almost always is seen as a good thing.

omg yes.
I don't know if I would call myself shy.. I guess I'm a little afraid of new people. Sounds strange, but whenever I meet someone new I instantly ask myself what are they thinking.. and of course, my imagination tells me bad stuff.. I think I'm used to prejudices. Maybe too much.

I'm probably on the other side of the scale to a lot of you. As I've got older I've become more and more shy. I don't talk to anyone at uni because I completely suck at social situations, so I keep myself to myself. Then when people do talk to me I don't know what to say so tend to just ignore them completely. It makes uni a living nightmare but unfortunately I'm stuck with it for a couple more years until I can move back home. When I'm with my friends at home though I'm much more outgoing, though that took years to be able to be like that with them.

Everyone always acts like it's so easy to just walk up to someone and talk to them, but either it's most definitely not or I'm a complete social spazz (for lack of a better word).

I'm Very Shy When You First Met Me, But Once You Get To Know Me I Never Shut Up LOL 😀

I am the same way. When I first meet people they think I am very quiet (which I am at first) but once they get to know me better and I become more comfortable around them I am not quiet at all.

When I do meet new people I do try and make an effort to be more vocal and get to know them but its definitely not my strong suite.

i just hate when other people are shy but it comes across as them being ignorant

This has happened to me several times. It is frustrating when people mistake someones shyness or social anxiety for being rude or ignorant.

As shy as I am, I've never found myself being overly shy or quiet in the work place. I have worked as a waitress and as a barista in the past and never had any trouble making small talk and being friendly with the customers. Go figure.

I've always been a little shy but once I get to know someone, I'm more confident. But I still haven't quite mastered how to overcome my shyness or my quietness for that matter. Because I can be pretty quiet and other times, I can talk loudly if I'm mad or excited about something.

I remember when younger and my mom would go to the bank, I hid behind her.

But in some ways, I feel by now that the shyness and quietness is apart of me.

I'm like that too. It's like until I get to know someone, I don't open up or talk much. And then you can't shut me up and I talk a little loud.lol.

Me too. With strangers, I'll barely speak at all, but around people I know, I'll be crazy. My mother thinks I have socialising issues and that I need to see a shrink because I don't like talking to people I don't know and because I don't hang out with boys. She wants me to go up and start talking to random boys on the train, but I told her there's no way in hell I'm doing that. She thinks if I don't improve my social skills now that I won't survive living on campus at university. I just told her that if forced into a situation, I'll manage. I said that if someone came up to me and asked a question, I'd answer.

I just never know what to say to people, or how to start a conversation. If someone else starts it, I'll answer their questions, but otherwise I'm at a loss. Oddly, I feel okay talking to adults and younger children. It's when faced with people my own age that I feel incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. That's probably because I think teenagers and peers will be more judgemental. Ugh. I hate being so insecure.

And boys. Going to an all girls school has not at all helped prepare me for interacting with the opposite sex. They terrify me! Seriously, besides my cousins, I have about 2 guy friends, and that's only because we were all born at the same hospital around the same time and our mothers got to know each other. We only see each other about every 3 or so years, so although I've known them since a young age, we're not exactly close.

I can relate to you on the second paragraph, people have to talk to me first, because I'm too shy to start a conversation, or I think they might be really judgemental about what I say.
I used to be really shy. So badly that I never talked to anyone. When I was a child, I'd hide behind my mother. I really don't know how I got over it, I just did... I think it was my twin. He was so talkative and friendly. He always makes me come out of my shell. I hate that he's so far away. When we get together, it's indescribable. We have so much fun. We bring something out in each other that no one else can. We call it our wonder twin powers.

I wish I had a twin. :D
I've gotten so much better since joining BB. Like it's insane... I really do owe so much to this board because meeting all the amazing people and making friends with all of you has allowed me to feel confident in myself as an interesting person and not think of myself as a loser freak no one would ever want to talk to.

I'm outgoing by nature... I want to talk to people. I LOVE to talk, I love to hear others talk. I LOVE to have conversations with people. I love talking to people so much, sometimes I make people up and make them talk to each other (I used to just make believe I was ten different people and play out a story but it was pointed out to me that's just a tad bit insane, so I started to film them and then write them down...). I like people. That's why I join message boards and online communities. I like people. I don't have very many people around me physically I'd really like to be friends with so it's difficult for me because I like people. The issue is growing up, the people didn't really like me and I had self esteem issues from a young age. It was kind of a self fulfilling prophecy... I thought I was a loser, and I was a loser. Except in high school I was kind of the Lady Gaga of the school... I was famous for being crazy and out of the box.. Then when I got to college it was a bit hard to deal with not everyone knowing my name. It hadn't been since 6th grade I had been in a classroom with people who didn't know my name. So it was really difficult to figure out how to talk to people if they didn't know anything about me.

My biggest issue now is after you talk to someone a few times, how do you move from acquaintance to friend? How do you ask for your new friend's phone number? How do you ask them to hang out sometime over the weekend or something? I know how to talk to people now... but how do you make friends? I don't get that part.

Oh Em Gee. our "change from late highschool to college" experiences are SO parrallel again!
I just wanted add a little more.

When I'm nervous or shy, I'll usually talk quieter to point where I'm mumbling. Even around relatives, I get positively shy and nervous around them. I only see them on Holidays and stuff like that. Usually, I have trouble with eye contact. I've always had trouble making friends. I was never confident enough and I usually lost friends because I don't know how to be a friend. I mean I try but I'm not good at asking people to go do something because I've been rejected a lot in middle school. I'd call people up, ask if they wanna go to the movies or something. I always called them in advance like my mom told me to. And I still got rejected. I got to the point where I gave up.

I pretty much gave up asking my friends to do stuff too. I have really bad anxiety about asking my friends to do something 'cause I don't want to inconvenience them. They have more of a life than I do... My thought process is if they want to hang out with me, they'll call. Also I CANNOT pick what we do or where we eat. It's better with this one group of friends but I really hate it... with my other group of friends I legit cannot pick what we do or where we eat. I'm just so scared they aren't going to want to eat where I do, so I suggest something and they shoot it down... or I suggest it and they go along with it even if they don't want to eat there because I suggested it and they feel like they should eat there because I do... same with doing stuff. I don't ever want to suggest something that my friends don't want to do because then while we're doing it they're going to be thinking that I'd rather be doing something else. Ad I don't want to suggest something my friends just go along with because then I'll be thinking they'd rather be doing something else so I just let them pick because I'm legit happy with doing ANYTHING with them because I don't have friends physically here so I'm just grateful to spend time with them...

Right. I think I got afraid of being rejected again. That sucks. So then you don't feel like suggesting anything because they'll either go along with it just because you suggested it.

Exactly!!!!
My biggest issue now is after you talk to someone a few times, how do you move from acquaintance to friend? How do you ask for your new friend's phone number? How do you ask them to hang out sometime over the weekend or something? I know how to talk to people now... but how do you make friends? I don't get that part.

I'd say it depends on how you get along, what common interests do you have. As far as I'm concerned, I never ask people out too soon. I'd rather wait for us to be close enough to be the invited. That's kind of a very passive attitude but it works quite well for me. I don't want to oppress people by asking them too much/too soon to go out. And of course, I don't want to be rejected. It's like when I think about doing something with my classmates, I just wait for someone to say "Hey, shouldn't we do something togheter?" and then for other people to say "oh yeah great idea" to finally decide to organize the event, sending the invitations,...because I know people are interested. With my very close friends, it is easier, because we know each other so well, and see each other so few (differents universities) that I know there will always be someone who says yes.
I never ask for the phone numbers unless I have a reason to. For example, there was a girl I got along great with but we only exchanged numbers when we both joined the little ciné-club of the school. That's probably why I have more contacts on Facebook than on my cell.

I don't know you well but reading this made me thought about a girl I'm working with at school. At the beginning of the year, it was really hard to stand her because she was so desperate to have friends she was kind of oppressive. I don't mean you are, let it be clear :tongue3:
What I mean is, that girl, she wanted friends so bad that she put a lot of pressure on us. She would say "I never made friends on my own, they were always my sister's friend". I always try to be the kindest possible with people, mostly when I know they are freaks like me, because I know I like to have people accepting my freakiness.
But this girl, she was too quick all over the place. She would always talk, talk, talk, complain, interrupting me when I was trying to say something, so that we would, you know, have a conversation instead of her having a monologue.
She would always say things like "You people are so into your lives you don't let other people come in, and whenever I ask people to go out they just say no, and do you want to go to the party? What do you mean you don't know yet? You might as well say you don't want to go with me! See, that's my point, I can't make friends, people just don't want to let me in" and she would go on and on and on like that. At some point (=after 3 days) a friend and I already had had enough, and we had to explain her that she didn't have the good attitude, that she just couldn't expect people to be friends with her after knowing her for 3 days, and that she had to stop to pressure people she just met into being her friend. We explained to her that we didn't get along together immediately, it took us months to have real closure, it tooks us encouraging each other at 3am when we still hadn't finished studying, it took us time, and we had to go through some things to get closer. We finally managed to make her understand she expected way too much from people. Like when she goes out, it is to make friends, without even passing by the acquaintance phase. She would consider it a lost day if she didn't manage to make herself friends.
I don't know if you also have that kind of desperate attitude, but generally speaking, I'd say someone is more likely to make friends without pressuring people.

First step: you chat
Second step: the person maybe becomes an acquaintance
Third step: the person either becomes a friend or stays an acquaintance.

And the most important is to let things evolve and never pressure anything, because this is bad, bad bad.

Tough, if you don't have to force anything, you do have to make yourself a bit important to people, you have to make them want to see you again.
The friends I made at the uni, I wouldn't be so friend with them if I hadn't never contacted them outside of the school sphere. It can be a thoughful sms when you know the person is a bit sad, or a "Have super fun 😀" when they told you they were going to a party and didn't know what to wear and you had a long discussion on what the person could wear. Those are little way to show interest.

SO, really, I'd say it's important to
x be yourself
x find patient and tolerant people who will accept you
x don't pressure them
x show interest
x do not fear rejection
