The wall he was promising to build as an election promise is now going to be a fence in parts.

You were expecting, what? An American variation on the Great Wall of China? Wall, fence, stone palisade, moat, or mine field, it amounts to a barrier (not an impenetrable one, of course) that will deter, not completely stop, illegal immigration and, more importantly, criminal activity. It's just a tool to aid the Border Patrol in doing their job, not replace them entirely.

What really disappointed me is how badly Hilary stumbled in the debates. I expected her to be a lot more articulate than she was and I expected her to be more in control of the narrative than she was.

That's the big question and the trouble with electing a pathological liar, you don't know what you're going to get.

I don't like that he was elected, but I do prefer him to his VP Pence (Trump strikes me as a narcissist, but that's still preferable to me over a religious zealot like Pence driven by his conscience to do what I consider horrible things). Now that he's POTUS I'm going to try to give him the benefit of a doubt and hope he pleasantly surprises me. If he can't pleasantly surprise me then I hope the checks and balances can keep him in check.

I was very pessimistic about an Obama presidency, but within a year I decided my judgment of him was too harsh, and by 2012 I found myself pleasantly surprised by him. Sure, he was flawed, but I don't expect saints that get as high as the Oval Office, and it's most likely best that someone can compromise (which means bending and sometimes making unpalatable deals, which idealists and ideological purists tend to call "crooked"), and it annoyed me that some of the people Obama was trying to compromise with were clearly more interested in making him fail (even if it hurt the USA in doing so, so long as Obama got the blame after he bent over backwards for these people). I can list moments I was annoyed to offended to disappointed in President Obama, but overall I felt he did as good a job as he could given his circumstances. But then my expectations were pretty low for him as he started in 2009 so it wasn't hard to pleasantly surprise me.

I'm expecting bad things from President Trump, worse than Obama, but that just means it will be even easier for him to pleasantly surprise me. And I really, really hope he does.

From what I've heard so far, his plan seems to be to surround himself with some of the top people in their specific fields, regardless of political affiliations, or even whether they supported his candidacy, and actually take their advice. Maybe that's just wishful thinking on the part of Fox News, but, if true, it would certainly make him unique in the history of Presidents for the last hundred or more years.

As I've said before, the politicians have just about destroyed this country. Maybe a businessman can bring it back. At the very least, he'll be starting out with all fresh ideas. He might just fool a lit of people.

Take it from a Southerner. We fought a war about that very thing back in the 1860's (and some Southerners are still fighting it, apparently). The bottom line is, the states can't defy Federal law, no matter how badly they want to, or how much they disapprove of the current President. Federal law overrules (one might even say, "Trumps") State law. The same goes for secession. Once you're a part of the U S of A, there is no escape. You're here to stay. So, to use the catch phrase of the day, "Suck it up, buttercup." We had to put up with 8 years of Obama, and we've already experienced 8 years of Clinton corruption in the White House once without a single riot, and nobody ever got excused from school to join a "He's Not MY President!" protest, even once.

And, if you don't like the difference between the popular vote and the Electoral vote, you've got 4 whole years to try and change it before it ever comes up again. Go for it.

Dignity in defeat, combined with honest effort and hard work to get things changed for the next time this comes up will get you a whole lot more results, not to mention support, than all these childish temper tantrums.

you can call me a sore loser and that I am throwing a temper tantrum, I know California won't secede and I don't expect them to, but whenever possible we will stand up against oppressive policies that take away human rights and go against our State's values. You and I disagree on a fundamental level and that is fine, I am not going to insult you. Muslim registries, mass deportation, reversal of reproductive freedoms, anti-LGBT laws, cuts to social security and medi-care, tax breaks for the 1%, appointing climate science deniers head of the EPA. These policies worry me and keep me up at night. But maybe I am over reacting, the way I feel so many people overreacted to President Obama's policies.

I am not going to insult you.

In my defense, and I'm sorry that, looking back on what I wrote, it probably dd look as if I were insulting you, personally, I was speaking in general about the current goings on of a very vocal minority of Clinton supporters. The fact remains that Federal law supersedes, not "interferes with," State law. We may not like it, but that's the way that the laws are written in this country. In my 69 years, I have seen a lot of Federal laws and regulations enacted that I didn't agree with, and more than a few that I downright hated. That doesn't change the fact that, barring a Constitutional conflict, those laws are what we have to abide with.

On that note, I am truly concerned about what trouble these so called "sanctuary cities" are going to cause, and the very real possibility of violent conflict that they may cause. We don't need another Civil War in this country.

It's quite possible that the administers of these cities are making all of these grand gestures and noble statements knowing full well that they will be, in fact, powerless to stop any Federal action in this matter. There is precedent from back in those bygone years of my own youth, when Gov George Wallace of Alabama called out the State National Guard to block integration of public schools. He made the grand gesture, got on National News, and won the support of a lot of racists because of his actions, but I have no doubt that he knew in advance that all it would take would be an order from the President to nationalize the Alabama National Guard, then order them to stand down. The Sanctuary Cities are pretty much the same thing. They allow the Mayors in question the opportunity to say that they defied the Federal authorities, despite he inevitability of the outcome. They can prance and posture, get national news coverage, and get the support of a lot of voters, knowing full well that anything that they do is a gesture, and a futile one, at that. They're simply taking the opportunity to advance their own political careers.

The law already exists, giving the Federal Government the authority to deport illegal foreign nationals. This isn't some new law or executive order that Trump will be issuing. It's the law, right now. It just hasn't been being enforced as diligently as it should have been. There's nothing that any state legislature or elected official can do to stop it

So we watch ill-informed celebrities and "news" programs give false hope to the politically naive. All the protest marches and petition signing mean absolutely NOTHING. It's really, really fun to watch, though.

Fun? Maybe, for the first few moments. Then it becomes disturbing, shocking, and downright frightening. We have American citizens, supposedly mature men and women, one moment acting like spoiled babies who can't have all the candy they want, then the next, dragging some innocent person out of their car and attacking them simply because they THOUGHT that that person was a Trump supporter. Private property is being destroyed, traffic is being disrupted, citizens are being put in danger, police are having to use tear gas to break up illegal demonstrations.

What I've been seeing for the last couple of weeks comes very close to the point where I feel ashamed of my country.

Are they such isolated incidents or is a civil war in the offing if not.
Will Trump supporters become more and more disillusioned as time goes by. That promise by Trump to make America great again will than likely fail as other Presidents of America have been promising that for years which is daft as they are admitting America isn't great.
One of the problems America is facing is that both Clinton and Trump laid so many negatives on each other during the run up to the voting that calming the situation is going to be problematic.

You sound surprised. But as you already know, this sort of behaviour isn't anything new. Whether it's politics, race-relations, or what have you. When a large group of people don't get their way (and decide to make a stink over it), sometimes things turn...annoyingly STUPID.

I haven't watched his actual speech but if this article is accurate then it's going to be a real mixed bag of events when Trump takes charge. Obviously you can never believe a word he says until it's actually happened but some of these ideas seem great and others just awful. If he buries TPP for example then he'll deserve a lot of credit. Plans to combat politicians scurrying off to become lobbyists also sounds good. Both actions in theory would be aimed at reducing the corporate strangle hold on democracy, we could do with some of that on this side of the pond.

On the other side however it seems like he wants to deregulate energy production and cut business regulations. That sounds an awful lot like he has no concern for the planet or the people on it. He's also come out and said Nigel Farage would be a good ambassador. He wouldn't. Nigel Farage is an absolute disgrace who's been lining his pockets for years by stirring up hatred and refusing to do the job he was elected for.
