Renfield - 9/10
Really enjoyed this. I felt it mixed the gothic horror and comedic elements very well, whilst also going so over the top with the gore/violence that it just became really fun to watch. The movie in general is unabashedly heightened (the bad guys hack the NSA’s surveillance feed and Dracula is literally going for “world domination” by the end), but because the entire thing is so over the top (ex. everyone exudes gallons upon gallons of blood when they are killed or dismembered) it really works well. Feels very stylistically cohesive.
My only pain point is that the movie gets a bit over-sentimental and REALLY cheesy at times. They are few and far between, but present enough to be annoying. There was also a scene early on where Dracula was really hard to understand under so much prosthetic makeup, but the makeup there was really great.
Cage is LOVING it here. If you like Nicholas Cage movies, you will love him. The man is
hamming it up so hard by the end, and some of the little things he does as Dracula had me dying in the theater. The one that I loved the most was in the trailer, where he mentions his other aliases, such as “The Lord of Death”, to which he giggles and puts his fingers to his mouth. Like he’s just so excited to be called something so awful lol. 😂 There was also a great joke where Cage is laughing with Ben Schwartz’s character, and Schwartz is simultaneously giggling and screaming because he doesn’t know if Dracula means to kill him or is just having a laugh.
Definitely give it a watch if you want something that is just unabashedly fun and enjoyable. Doesn’t take itself overly serious and you can tell everyone, especially Cage, had a joy making this thing.

Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) - 7/10
This is a very niche, campy cult scifi. If you've got a love for old school effects and dumb but fun plots you will got some enjoyment out of it. Its bascially ripping off Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar, and everything else in between but boy is it having fun with itself. Nice cast too Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, George Peppard (as Space Cowboy 😀), John Saxon (fun villain) and lots of space babes😉. Plays more like a Sunday morning serial at times. Lucky sod @Hunga Munga saw it in the cinema at the time😵

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (8.5/10) One of the better additions to the Shrek-verse (?); this was really enjoyable with entertaining, well-realised characters going on a quest and learning life lessons along the way. Simple stuff that is near-extinct these days. Personal favorites were 'The Goldie-Locks Gang' and the genuinely creepy Big Bad Wolf relentlessly hunting poor puss.

Hell Night (1981) 3/10
A film so lame even Linda Blair's terrible. The most interesting thing about it is one of the actors was once a Tennis player and more recently has been a commentator for Porker tournaments. A boy can't you tell from his acting 😀

@Bop its not too bad. Different people have different standards. If you’ve seen a fair bit of hardcore horror you should be fine. The film at least builds to that stuff.

Fatherhood - shit. I thought it would be a cute little duo movie, but the characters had no chemistry, the jokes were mainly about poo and pants and it was not even an enjoyable snippet into the lives, just boring. 1/10

Babylon 7/10: I might have graded this lower if I watched all 188 minutes in one night, but I spread it out over three. Still, I think it would have been a much better movie if it had been an hour shorter. Once it gets into the stories of three Hollywood denizens at the dawn of talkies, it becomes more absorbing, though it did not show enough of the journey of Nellie La Roy (which was especially surprising, considering it devoted whole half hours to debauched party scenes). As a silent-film aficionado, I also felt the makers didn't care at all what those movies were really like. But in general, I thought it was better than reviews led me to believe, and the cast was quite excellent.

Gave it a 6 yesterday, immediately after watching it. But now that I've sat on it for a day and considered it, I'll raise it a bit; it stays with you, which earns an extra point, imo. Also, all the awards for Christina Ricci, always!

Gingersnaps, 2000. For some reason I have never seen this movie before last night. Instantly on my top 20 favs. The perfect amount of camp, and a millennium period piece. Also it takes place on Halloween so I can add to my October must watch list! 10/10 totally recommend!
