"Gone Girl": 8/10
David Fincher rarely fails to disappoint, and Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike were pitch perfect in their roles. I did think some of the supporting characters were distractingly miscast, which is unfortunate because that's such a stupid way for a movie to fall short of perfection. Still, this film was a great exploration of the public's voyeuristic fascination with murder mysteries, especially those involving lovers/spouses. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
"Mystic River": 9/10
This movie is over a decade old, but it's one I've been meaning to watch for a while now. Clint Eastwood is a masterful storyteller. There is something old school about his film-making style, including in this one. His direction is not flashy, but still manages to be suspenseful and gripping. Every performance in this movie was just top notch, and the story really gets you thinking about the impact of a traumatic experience, both on the person directly affected and to those who were tangentially affected. Great movie, although you sort of have to be emotionally prepared for some rather dark and heavy material.

Have you read the book to Gone Girl? I got it for my Mum for Christmas and will be having a read after her. It is of course rare that an author writes the screenplay to their own novel. In this case it paid off, and its one of Fincher's best films, maybe top two just after Se7en. If Pike doesn't win the Oscar then I will riot!😡
Not a big Eastwood fan, but would say that Mystic River is one of his better efforts. It is quite powerful, and well told. Not so keen on Penn in it, but Tim Robbins, Laura Linney and Kevin Bacon are all excellent.

An American Warewolf in London 8/10
One of the highlights of 80s cult cinema. It is also one of the best films to merge horror and comedy so well. The special effects makeup is top notch, there are some cracking jokes, brilliant British character actors, and it is wonderful thrill ride.

I really loved this movie. Absolutely hilarious and yet the storyline was interesting and moved along nicely. I didn't find one part of it boring which is great for a comedy as most times when I watch a comedy I find myself waiting for the next 'funny' moment, but this one overall was great.

Beverly Hills Cop 8/10
The series went off track in the next two parts, but this original film is still one I get a lot of entertainment from re-watching today. This was when Eddie Murphy was at the heights of his comic powers, and I love his quick witted, street wise fish out of water cop thing. He has good chemstry with the other leads in the film. There are some cool action scenes, a kicking soundtrack, and strong villain. Plus a proper director to keep the pace.

For the most part I found this a very engrossing, stylish and intriuging film, with two very good performances in the lead roles. At times it was darker than many mainstream films, and the sound was brilliantly effective. I did think that at times it resorted a bit to clitches, such as the lead character getting a big head and being rude to his family and girlfriend. That whole secetion of the film could either had been better developed or maybe dropped. And they tried to tie things up a little too neatly at the end by which time the film was dragging a bit. But still really good.

Really makes you consider deleting all of your online information until you remember that it won't matter... the internet remembers... 😉 But really, to anyone who's watched or read anything remotely futuristic can see why this should be terrifying to us.

A long and mostly tedious film. It's a full on musical rather than a film including songs. That means you get the characters singing every little detail to mostly the same tune which wears thin pretty quickly. There aren't any likeable characters involved and the ending just leaves you wanting to shrug your shoulders and move on.
However I do recommend 3 songs in here which save the film from being completely awful. Agony sung by the princes is very amusing and worth a watch. Most importantly though is The Wolf and Red Riding Hood singing about each other. Absolutely hysterical, although this did seem to be a view held only by me and my partner in the cinema.

Lol, this reminds me of when me and a friend of mine went to see Sweeney Todd at the movies and after like fifteen minutes we were both like "oh.... it's pretty much all song..."

Les Mis was a nightmare. My partner always thinks she'll enjoy that kind of thing and then is bored an hour before the end. I know it's going to be bad going in lol. South Park is what a musical should be like 🙂

No I like them too. Not totally sure if Sweeny Todd is a muscial at least not in the tradition sense. Will see Into the Woods, but I am guessing it will be flawed, because the director just edits everything at a 100 miles an hours, and doesn't make concessions for the transistions from stage to screen. The cast should make it a watch though.

I'm a fan of some musicals, it depends. My all time favourite would be West Side Story, absolutely fantastic music score and dances. Such a classic, I've watched it so many times! Mixed reviews on Into the Woods I see, I want to go see it myself soon.

Yeah West Side Story is one of the classic screen muscials. I also really like Mary Poppins, Little Shop of Horrors, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Oliver. For record I did like the recent Les Mis too.

I am thinking about watching the 4 hour Hobbit supercut tonight.. Heard it's supposed to be better. I might or might not though.

Normally, I adore musicals, but this one...it was just weird. I found the cutting of the scenes very strange, the weird back and forth between the 'performance' and the actual story. Great acting and casting but just...not my cup of tea.

The stage version is much better. But I don't dislike the film as much as some. Gene and Zellwigger are both great in it.
Heathers (1988) 8/10
Forgot just how dark this cult teen film was. It puts a fresh twist on teen formula. The performances are good, and it is really honest about the challenges of growing up. Certain aspects such as the look of the films or the clothes are dated now, but it really does carry a punch which so few films of the genre has matched since.
