Carry on Up the Kyber (1968) 7.5/10

One of the best Carry Ons I think. The cast are all great and have good chemstry. Lots of sight gags, nice visuals, and cheeky humor.

Pretty good for the type of movie. Predictable, but the acting is decent.

Spring Breakers 2/10

In all honesty this movie is terrible, the only reason I'm giving it 2 points is because I like Ashley Benson as an actor.
The plot in this movie, as the title says, is based around spring break. It just seems delusional since all the girls get involved in organised crime, go on a killing spree and return home like nothing has happened. I don't get it.
The only reason I watched it to the end is because of my inability to not finish a movie once I've started it.

Haha, same experience here. I watched it with my brother and we were sitting there like "what is this? Is it supposed to be arty? Edgy?"
It was horrible. Ashley Benson was good though, I'd give it two stars mostly because of the look of James Franco which was hilarious to me.

@Taake that's who he was!!! I couldn't for the life of me figure it out. He looked so familiar. It's almost like they wanted to make him look like Jack Sparrow. That looked suited a pirate, not the leader of a crime squad.
The scene with him playing 'Everytime' by Britney Spears....wtf!

I don't know who Franco knows in Hollywood but it must be someone big to keep landing all these big roles. The guy almost has zero talent, and is just so smug. The only things he's been good in are where he is playing annoying people, Oz the Great and Wonderful, 127 Hours, 30 Rock.

I thought I was right to give Spring Breakers a wide birth😱

Not seen it so can't say for sure, but I just think that calling it a satire or arty is just an excuse for the director to get together all those hot girls and show leery content.

The Equalizer: 8/10- good, old fashioned action flick. Very stylised and violent but Denzel again carries everything off effortlessly. If it hadn't been him adding the presence/gravitas then this would've been a solid 6-ish.

The Glass House: 7/10- never heard of this before, despite some strong casting. I didn't know there was such a thing as a subtle, teen, suspense flick. Huh.

Leelee Sobieski was particularly beleivable as the teenager slowly uncovering the horror behind the picteresque facade of her new family. Enjoyable, although the ending stretched belief just a tad.

The source of my amazement was Johnny Depp and the fact that he continues to find work. I can generally find something to like in just about any movie, as long as the popcorn's reasonably fresh, but this was one of the rare exceptions to that rule. Ironically, the last one in that category was "The Lone Ranger," also a Depp disaster.

Saw the trailer for that over Christmas and it did look total pants and the reviews so far seem to back that. Depp doing comedy just doesn't work for me. He is much better playing the brooding loner or straight parts.

Shadow Dancer (2012) 8/10

Really tense and stylish period drama, with nice pacing, and an excellent central performance from Andrea Riseborough.

Saw that a couple of years ago. She was good, but the film pretty awful I would say.

I may have a higher expectation of it because I thought that the film was going to be a dumb slasher movie with a teenage girl screaming as she fled from some knife-wielding maniac.
I know that my niece was bored to tears by it though. She fell asleep by the end! 😉

Disagree. It was a giant pile of crap IMO. Bad satire.


Watched "Downloaded" 8/10 - kind of crazy how long (not so long ago really) that whole Napster drama played out.

Also just showing something in a film which might happen in real life isn't enough to make it good satire. You have to take it further than that.

Double Indemnity (1944) 10/10

One of the most perfect film noirs ever. Just love the inventive dialouqe, the twists and turns and the lead performances. Also there are a lot of interesting things going on with gender politics. The tension is perfectly buit up through detail throughout. A really entertaining, and sharp film.

Birdman (2014) 6.5/10

Have mixed feelings on this one. The first half bored me quite lot. It was self-indulgent and the style was over done. Also, I don't actually think what the film was trying to say about performance and celebrity was that cutting edge. If you watch some of David Lynch's recent films, or something like The Player then this ground has already been covered and much better. But the cast are excellent, Keaton is not just wild, and out of control at times, but he also brings warmth, and vulenability to the character when need be. The likes of Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, and Emma Stone were all on top form too. The film was at its best when you had the more intimate moments, some of those were truly sad. So hit and miss. I would like to see Keaton get the oscar, but I don't know if the film itself outside of the visuals maybe deserves to do that well.

One of my favourite movies. The music by Thomas Newman is amazing, really good twists and beautifully done. A real classic, with really moving scenes, especially the last.

I actually thought it was going to be a documentary so I was a bit surprised to find that it was a movie. It was a good movie too, a bit cheesy towards the end, but these topics tend to be, they want to leave you on a positive note after all. All in all though it was well made, the lead actress was very good, and if you're looking for something to feel good about, stay away from this, but the title may have tipped you off to that 🙂

The Green Ray (1986) 10/10

A great bit of filmmaking from French auteur Eric Romher. This follows a women who has just been dumped by her long term boyfriend and who struggles to connect to other people and move on despite her friends insisting she socialise more, and presue guys. Through a series of encounters, on holidays and gatherings she gets more and more cut off from the world. Its a really poetic, and sad film, with some sharp social observation, but also gentle moments of comedy too. The lead actress is excellent, and I found it a very profound and moving film, with a great ending.

Beyond Clueless (2015) 7.5/10

Very enjoyable docuementary defining the modern teen movie through five chapters. The director draws from a wide range subjects including horror films such as Ginger Snaps and Jeepers Creepers, as well as more arthouse fare such as Freeway. The film flows very well, is fun to watch, and has an excellent soundtrack from Summercamp.

Liquid Sky (1983) 3/10

A very lowbudget and trashy sci-fi, with a trippy feel to it. Trouble is its not trashy, funny or edgy enough to support an whole film. The film drags on way too long, and mostly it just comes across as one long performance arts piece. I like a good bit of trash, but this was just pointless, bar some fun high camp, not much to see.

See No Evil 2 (2014) 7/10

A slightly more mainstream horror than the directors' previous bodyhorror gore fest American Mary. But this is good tight stuff. It is quite supenseful, with some nice moments of gore and some fun setpieces. Wrestler Kane (Glen Jacobs) retains his intimaditing prsencse, and Katherine Issabelle is on fine form actually playing against type.

The Girl with the dragon tattoo 5/10

I've watched both the swedish movie and tv version and read the book(s). It's been a few years though. If memory serves I prefer the swedish one. One possible positive thing for the american version is that it's easier to watch. The original felt a bit slow paced at times but also more brutal. One very bad detail to me is that once we're introduced to the "villain" the whole look screams "It's me! I'm the bad guy." The question is though if I'd felt the same way about it if I didn't know about it in advance.

I get why some would prefer this version. Not as heavy and disturbing and lets face it, watching a movie that you absolutely need subtitles to understand demands more of you.
