Rate the Last Movie You've Seen #30

Super Mario Bros. (1993) 7/10
So bad, it’s good. I thought it was a fun watch. I’m not a big Mario fan so the film’s wildly different approach didn’t bother me. Despite its troubled production, the film has a charm to it to makes it hard to dislike.
 
The Martian (2014) - 10/10

I'd seen it before, but grew bored quickly and didn't think about it again. Until last night, because I now knew that Sebastian Stan was in the cast. Funny thing though; he was the least impressive part of this film. No, he's not a "great actor," and probably never will be. But he looked pretty and managed a few soulful glances, so I'm good. 😜

I was really, really moved by Matt Damon's performance. Everything his character went through, being alone on Mars, learning how to survive, and then so many setbacks. Loved the JPL guys, the behind the scenes NASA intrigue, and the entire world holding it's collective breath...waiting to see if this astronaut could be rescued. And yes, the crew mutiny! They went back to get him. Great, great film.

The Invisible Man (1933) 8/10
Great fun. The reveal of the main character is brilliantly handled, and Claude Rains gives a distinct performance. Its full of suspense, high camp and fun set pieces.
 
Rambo: Last Blood - 2/10
Some of the worst acting I've seen in a mainstream film in a very long time. Its scary when Stallone (who sleeps his way through the film) is probably the best of a bad butch. Part lame day-time soap opera, part generic action movie. The villains are pure stereotypes and never feel like a real threat. Its by the numbers and very dull...

Spring (2014) - 4/10
Maybe it's my own fault for going into it expecting a horror movie - after all, I found it under a friggin' horror movie list! But, alas, we've got, at most, a romance interspersed with a tiny bit of sci-fi/fantasy. Certainly no horror. No gore. No scares. Just...drudge. At 90 minutes, it still felt way too long. The actors were fine, the effects were surprisingly good considering the low filming quality, but that alone can't save it.

This was the start of what will be the 31 horror films I've never seen before that I'll be watching this month - great start, lol 😀

I've seen Dracula listed in Drama rather than Horror, a lot of "Comedies" were tragedies, don't know why they can't label 'em right. A librarian told me that Bridges of Madison county (book) was originally filed under Non-Fiction architecture. WTH?
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019) 5.5/10
A mess of a movie with good ideas. It worked better when it stuck to being a Sci-Fi. Michael C. Hall is badly miscast too.

I find a few newer productions like this now. Some good ideas but never quite hit the mark and the direction just seems off a lot of the time. They have a few big names who draw me in but then I feel sorry for them getting tangled in that mess. I saw this advertised and will probably watch it next rainy day.

Ready or Not - 8/10
Its like a twisted version of a Agatha Christie play mixed with the Evil Dead with a pulse! Its such a blast. Samara Weaving is brilliant in the lead (she kicks ass!! 😛 ). If you like macabre, hammy, but twisted horror comedies with a feminist twist this should be up your street. Its a bloody gem! I loved it!😀

Really underrated. Why must a film's third act be 'cohesive'? Is it not enough to see Mark Strong, unhinged?
 
Carnival of Souls (1962) 10/10
A cult classic which inspired both Lynch and George A. Romero. One of the strangest and most terrifying horror movies ever. Look forward to watching all the features on my DVD special edition 🙂
 
Child's Play (1988) 7.5/10
Not the best of these films but a solid start and good introduction to the character.

Because I love IT(1990) i was kind of comparing them all the time, and IT chapter 1 just didn’t live up to it - or anywhere near. I’m not paying to go and see the second one.

I liked the first part actually and prefer it to the 90's miniseries. But they screwed it up with part 2.

For me, "Z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z"

I know it's based on a cult classic TV series, and I'm sure that there must be people, somewhere, who loved it. I just don't happen to be one of them.

Nightmare Beach (Aka Welcome to Spring Break) (1989) 3/10
This naff low budget horror is worth it just for 80's legend John Saxon and lines like, "Welcome to spring break, the annual migration of the idiot" or "Stuff this leatherhead!" and "They electrocuted him the other day"😛
 
Brightburn - 7/10

A very effective Sci-Fi Horror exploring the idea of an evil Superman (as a child). Could have been a little more in-depth when it came to characterisation and with exploring its core idea, but still an enjoyable film, full of tension and with some effectively disturbing scenes (there's one death in particular which is horrifying in its gore). Glad I gave this movie a go, I would definitely recommend it.

(Re-watch) Red Eye - 8/10

This is such a hidden gem from Wes Craven, a tense psychological thriller set on a plane, in which a disturbingly charismatic and creepy Cillian Murphy takes Rachel McAdams hostage on a Red Eye flight in order to force her to help him carry out an assassination. Sounds kinda hokey, but it's actually a terrific film, full of tension as the two actors play off one another wonderfully, each trying to outsmart the other.

Yeah Red Eye gets a bad rap. Still need to see Brightburn.
Dr Strange
Still on this slow crusade to watch all the Marvel movies. Think this is the point of losing interest. It's an okay film that tries to distract you with pretty lights because it's extremely generic in its story. I quite like the fact that Strange is an asshole. Cumbersplash's accent is awful though, it took me out the film a few times. Another take for Benedick!
 
Carol (2015)

Eh.

Look, do I get why it got awards (or was nominated, idk)? Sure. But it just wasn't for me. It was more important for it to do the build-up, than to give us great dialogue and it felt like there were no plot until more than halfway through it. I'm not stupid, I get that it was more about what didn't happen, more about the subtext than the text, but I guess I just need more plot and/or dialogue in my movies. The last 20 minutes did raise it by one point, rating-wise, though 🙂

I'll take But I'm a Cheerleader any day, over this LGBT film.

Batman (1989) 7/10
Not the best Batman film by a long shot, but it’s the most fun to watch imo if you just want a simple good vs evil story. I liked all the characters. It’s a bit corny by today’s standards and Batman/Bruce Wayne doesn’t get much screen time with Keaton being a great Bruce and not so good Batman, though it’s a refreshing change after seeing the Nolan trilogy.
