Veronica Mars (2014) 6/10
A solid watch once it gets going. Bell carries it so well in the lead. But it does suffer from trying to cram too much in. Also it gets stuck between nodding to the fans, and trying to work for a new audience. Some of the Hollywood references don't work. Logan is played too straight compared with the series. Enjoyable enough.

The Mummy Returns - 6/10

This one is way more action-packed than the first and far too dramatic and over-the-top, yet still funny and entertaining, and the few character moments we do have are solid. Not as good as the first, but still enjoyable.

Mini's First Time - 7.5/10
Almost as good as I remembered, though I found Reed's acting a bit stilted in the first half-hour while I remembered adoring her performance in the past. She reminds me of Eliza; she can really mostly do one thing, but she does that one thing very well. Alec Baldwin was, as always, the best part of the film 🙂

Its a mess and lacks the charm or character depth of the first film. Its too long and feels like a series of setpieces. The cast do their best but they just get lost in the mix.

(Re-watch) Veronica Mars - 8/10

I love the Veronica Mars movie, I think it does a great job of developing the characters organically, while keeping them true to their core traits. Lots of fun Easter Eggs for fans but also coherent and stand-alone enough for new fans to enjoy. Kristen Bell is so much fun to watch. And I quite liked the central mystery and the way it linked back to characters we already knew. My only complaint is that they didn't bring back Leighton Meester as Carrie Bishop.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) 9/10
Amazing film. Can’t decide if it or TDK are better, but a fitting end to the Nolan trilogy. Anne Hathaway shows how versatile she as an actress. She’s the best version of Selina Kyle/Catwoman imo (to my knowledge anyway). I knew little about Bane beforehand, but thought it was interesting to see Batman face a villain who was physically stronger than him.

Child's Play (2019) - 4/10
Absolutely awful and a waste, there was literally no reason for this to be made. I'll give them props for trying to update the story by making Chucky an AI, except it took away some of the best parts of the original. And, even if you don't compare it to the seven movie franchise that came before, it still sucked!

What was the point of the opening scene? Of all the reasons a good writer can come up with to explain why the AI is turning homicidal, it's this? Some factory dude pissed at his boss decides to ruin an innocent child's present and then kill himself? Huh?

Then there's Aubrey Plaza's character; the mom? Really? When she was first put in a scene with Andy I figured they were brother and sister, and I kept waiting for the mom to show up. I mean, their interactions and language screamed siblings and I don't care if she was 16 when she had him, you don't act that way with your kid.

Finally, we had a movie clearly filmed after the whole #MeToo/Feminism movement of recent years; the first two victims (mom's boyfriend and janitor) were total douches, with one having a secret family and the other creeping on the mom and other residents through hidden cameras. Why was that necessary? Why couldn't the 12 year old kid just hate his mom's boyfriend because he missed his dad? Why couldn't the janitor be a quiet introvert who isn't a raging creep? Oh, I know why; because men are all assholes, right? Please... add to that the annoying fact that of all the kids, the toughest badass was the only girl. Give me a break.

Don't waste your time and watch the original films instead. Or check out the upcoming TV show that was actually made by the original creators of the Child's Play franchise; I will be.

The Dead Don't Die (2019) - 7/10
Honestly, don't know if that rating needs to be 6 or 8 instead, but I'm okay with that; it usually means that I'll enjoy a film more on a re-watch. All I can say is...enjoyable. I'm not a zombie-film fan so I have very little to compare it to, which I think is actually a good thing, considering some of the bad reviews this has gotten and it's somewhat low scoring on IMDb.

Bill Murray was in top-form and the best part of the film, along with the meta-jokes constantly flying between him and Adam Driver - whom I was happy to finally see in a film, after what I've heard of the actor in the past several years.

Adore the use of the classic country song that the film was titled after, too 🙂

Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019) - 9/10
Just perfect. I'd heard people say it was better than the first one - which was amazing - but I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. Very few things kept it from a perfect score, but I'm gonna hold my complaints until I see the next one, considering the whopper of a cliffhanger this thing ended on.

Knights Of Badassery 6/10

I found this little gem on Amazon Prime, and was intrigued, simply because Summer Glau was in it. Basically, a group of D&D nerds meet in the woods for some live action fantasy. A would be sorcerer accidentally manages to summon a demon from hell, and mayhem results. (Vaguely like a gory cross between "Something Blue," and "Once More With Feeling," but not as well done. Summer is the brave warrior woman with a flashing sword. Final assessment, the producers couldn't decide whether they wanted to make a comedy or a horror movie, and managed to miss on both counts.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Not sure how to rate it. It was another Marvel movie I guess... solid, well made action with some drama and funny bits.
Me not being able to remember the last movie properly was very confused in the beginning though until I slowly started to the get a grip of what happened previous.

Also a bit disappointed about the death toll.
After everything I heard about the movie I thought they would kill off half the cast. lol

Hail Satan!
Ehm... not sure how to rate this. 2/5 maybe. I’ve known Satanists, so I thought I knew what I was getting into but... this is like petty children playing dress-up. I’ve never seen people so enamoured with horns. They’re like a bad parody of themselves. Like children screaming ”please, please look at me! Look at what a rebel I am! Look at me, pleeeeaaase”

They did include La Vey though, who brought some ”sanity” to the vaccous freaks of the present.

No surprise many or them had their faces blurred out or covered.

Honestly, it was good for a laugh. And the director of the movie did a good job. There were great interviews, good clips and cuts, and showed both the normal ones (non-violent) and the shrieking in ecstacy ”we’re gonna execute the president!” (Literal quote) ones. (The latter one claiming they’re the sane ones of course while the others silently moonwalked away from them.)

So, interesting but I eventually got a bit bored. Also glad these people don’t live near me, they seem super needy.

I wonder if they got anywhere it their lawsuit against Sabrina the Teenage Witch about that Baphomet statue.

@one eyed chicklet I actually understood the lawsuit better now, because they put a lot of work into that design, it was more original than I thought when I first heard of it (and oh, right, I forgot the new title 🙂)

Hell Fest (2018) 3/10
A tedious horror. The characters are really annoying. I didn't believe in them and no one stands out. The acting is very wooden too. Even for a low budget horror it looks so low rent and is poorly lit. The plot is lame, the villains the least bit scary. There are no surprises, no suspense. There are a couple of decent kills. But its shit. And its another horror which wastes Tony Todd in a cameo😡

I really enjoyed this movie, Jennifer Lawrence as always blew me away and it’s definitely a movie that makes you think which is always good 🙂
Then again, I went into it knowing about the biblical analogies and what happened with the baby so that might have influenced the score I gave 🤷🏻‍♀️

I re-watched the entire Scream Quadrilogy over the weekend (such a great film franchise). Also, spoilers ahead if you haven't seen all the films:

Scream - 9/10
My fave horror film of all time, love the satire, the razor-sharp humour, the opening scene, Sidney as the Final Girl, the amazing characters and pretty much everything about the film. Really well directed, very tight and cohesive, a great villain reveal and satisfying conclusion. I'll always love this film.

Scream 2 - 6/10
I know a lot of people find the second movie to be as good as (sometimes better) than the first, but there's something about the second film that just doesn't gel with me. I don't particularly like the opening scene, and while I enjoy some of the new characters (Derek, Micky, Mrs Loomis) some of them are really annoying (Haille, the sorority sisters, Gale's new camera man). Cotton Weary's characterisation in the film is ... weird, to say the least. I know he was supposed to be a red herring, but I feel like they went too far with it. Also, the third act of the film (pretty much from Randy's death to the end) kind of drags a lot. Still a fun watch, though.

Scream 3 - 7/10
The third installment is much goofier than the preceding two and not nearly as well-written, but I still love it and enjoy the hell out of it when I watch. I particularly love Parker Posey's character and all her histrionics. I enjoy the comedic elements and I like the cheesy soap-opera backstory which is developed in this film. The villain reveal is a bit of a let down, mostly because even though he's connected to Sidney, they've never actually interacted, so it rings hollow. But it's such a fun film which knows that it's not as good as the other two, and so just has fun.

Scream 4 - 8/10
This one took a while to grow on me and I still think it works better as a gateway to a new trilogy (as it was originally planned to be) than as a finale to the series, but it's a very well-written and well-directed film. I like seeing Sidney, Dewey and Gale as older and more developed characters and I like a lot of callbacks to the original films. Jill could be a better-developed villain, but she's still fun and while most of her friends are a tad under-developed, they're still entertaining characters (especially Kirby!). Overall a solid film.

Watching this reminded me how I like, six years ago or something, was hoping for a Black Widow movie. Now they're like, yeah, you're getting one, except I don't really care anymore so eh... what the heck took so long you guys?

Anyway, more to the point, I don't need a Black Widow movie because this movie was more than I could ever hope for from Black Widow or some "Red Sparrow" or whatever the J-Law movie was called. This is like John Wick but with a tiny Chinese-Korean action heroine who kicks ass in the most brutal way. I loved Sook-hee. This was such a great, but brutal and really tragic movie. Fast paced action, a la John Wick with a sense of Kill Bill thrown in, combined with a slow paced unraveling of the story and some romance to boot. It takes a very special male lead to pull off being charming, and have you root for him, even though you know from the start that he is lying to the female lead all along. Jun Sung has that ability, in fact, I think I have a little crush on him now.

The thing I didn't like was the final fight scene, it just went way too over the top. But I guess with an opening like this movie had, they had to out-do themselves and it's a bit of a miss for me. Though that said, I haven't felt so "kill them all" since the Wickean puppy-revenge.

Spoiler: Here be dragons

I hate the whole dragged out fight thing when the hero of the movie comes face to face with their nemesis and has every chance to kill them, but choses to do it the slow way. In this case I was like "he just killed your child! YOUR CHILD! SHOOT HIM! None of this, "I'll show you what you made me" "let's have a lenghty chat about it" nonsense

Basically, if you like action (and spurting blood) I'd recommend giving this a chance.
