Question Respect

To be honest, I'm a very judgemental person.
I don't respect someone until I think they deserve it.
This response probably makes me a 'bad person' or something but that's the way I see it.
A large majority of the worlds population seem to be utter pricks so I feel no reason to respect that.

As long as you don't act like a douchebag just because someone hasn't deserved your respect yet, you're not bad.

I'm the same way.

I don't think you're a bad person. I don't judge you. Your decisions are your own. As are mine.

Different levels of respect.

Surface level respect, I try give everyone a chance and give them the respect everyone deserves.

But I only respect someone fully if they have earned that with me. I dont think I really hold grudges either though, i'm fairly quick to respect people again IF they earn it.

I try to be respectful, but I'm lazy and insensitive, so it doesn't always work.

But when I can, I make sure to treat everyone better than I expect them to treat me.

Treat people with respect until they show that they don't deserve it(but don't carry a grudge forever, people make mistakes).

If I didn't get respect from a person, just because I hadn't proven myself to be worthy of respect, I would never try to prove myself. If everyone in the world did that, it would be a pretty respectless world, if we waited for the others people to be respect-worthy first. Of course, there's differend kinds of respect and different kinds of ways to get it.

When I say that I try to be respectful, I mean that I don't cut in lines, talk loud at the cinema or act generally like a jerk, unless that person is a jerk towards me. Then the gloves come off.

Oh, definitely not I'm just a meanie to everyone!

Seriously where I work I have to treat the people and customers with respect regardless of whether they deserve it or not. As far as my friends and other people go I have respect for them if they show it to me simple as that. I don't base it off levels of how much someone respects me or doesn't.

ditto on the work thing - and it so hard sometimes.
Like JohnnyThunders said, I work in a environment where you're required to automatically respect the customers. Sometimes it's very hard. We had a branch install a new security system in the town next to ours that requires, basically, a "buzz-in" for you to get to certain areas that had been 100% open before, because they've been robbed 3 times in the last 2 years. Customers freaked out. We have a particular customer who used to bank there, but comes to our branch now because he hates the new system. He yells at us literally EVERY week, like we have control over it. But, because of our professionalism, we say "hello" and smile at him when he comes in.

There are times when I'd really love to meet some of our customers outside of my job because the second they started to go off, I'd give them a piece of my mind. It's unbelieveable how disrespectful someone can be to a person who they view as not much more than a doormat. Customer Service people are people too.

People generally have my respect the first few minutes I meet them, but once you get upset at me for something not my fault/beyond my control, you've lost respect in my eyes. I understand that you are frustrated with policy and regulations and things like that, but it doesn't do any good to get upset and telling me "I'll pull all my money out of this bank!" is not going to change what is required of you.

Its not going to hurt you to try to be respectful and hear what is being told to you.

Respect is something people don't have to earn at first. You should treat them with respect untill they prove otherwise. If they screw up, they lose it, and it's their own fault.

I'm respecting all people, but I have low tolerance, so many lose it quickly.

Well, yeah, I lose respect.. But I think alot of people lose respect for me on a daily basis..
So because of that, I try my very best to be as open-minded as possible with people, and their decisions. I give people alot of chances to earn my repsect back, I think. Maybe too many.

If say, you had been dating me for 5 years, then left me for a 17 year old, and then got her pregnant and didn't tell me for 8 months, I think then, I'd lose respect for you in a big way, yes.

Do you respect people unless you realise that they do not deserve your respect, or do you respect people only when they have proved that they deserve it?

I like to think I follow the first philosophy, but sadly I think I usually go by the later one. I'm sort of a cynic, and it's hard for me not to automatically think the worst regarding people. Sometimes though, people surprise me. And then I have restored faith in humanity. 😉

Interesting, why do you say that? Would it offend you that the othe girl is younger than you? Or that you hadn't been told right away?

I've had a lot of bad experiences with people, and therefore I think it is difficult for me to respect them before they have done something that shows they're worth respecting. I mean, a large bunch of people I've met so far didn't respect me, or took me like I am, so just to be sure, I'm careful. I mean, I am a rather open-minded person, and respect for me has nothing to do with objective factors like ethnicity, political ideas (to a certain extent, that is), sexual orientation, which country you're from or what you would do with your money if you won a million in a lottery. I mean, I'd find it stupid if you had a million and wouldn't even give 10 Euro to a charity or when you voted some reactionary, racist bastard into parliament, but those things are totally up to that person, and choices other people should respect. Whether I respect a person is based entirely on whether I like that person and whether that person treats me (and other people) in a respectful manner.

Actually, you'll have to work pretty hard to earn my disrespect; there are only a wee handful of people in my life who ever managed to do so. I very, very much expect respectful behavior towards myself from everyone, so as per the Golden Rule, it's my ethical duty to give out respect freely.

Now, trust and liking, that's a different matter. I can and do respect people I would never, ever want to make an offer of friendship towards, or accept it from them... but to me, respect is just the basic founding stone to build any functioning society on. Even accepting that the other person is privy to the universal human rights is a sign of basic respect, isn't it?

Its weird, i try and respect everyone, and i like to think i give everyone a chance when i meet them. But i guess sometimes i can just dislike a person when i meet them.

As far as respect goes, if we are talking reallife i will be polite, but not respect them, They have to earn that, but online is different. Its kind of hard to have respect for people you have no idea what they are really like.
