4.O.cious Miss

Guest
Buffy sat quietly at her large, redwood desk and perused the office. The room was garishly decorated in highly priced paintings and Persian rugs. Dawn had recently graduated college and opened her own Interior decorating business in the near vicinity. She thought she'd show her little sister how proud she was of her by being her first customer. Her office and the outside waiting room looked spectacular. And for what she had payed for the interior make-over, it better.
This was their first day open since the remodel, and Buffy's entire day was booked. She had back to back appointments scheduled from Nine to Five-thirty. Glancing at the grandfather clock against the far wall, it read 8:50. Her first patient for the day would be arriving soon. Standing slowly and strolling across the room to her office door, she opened it and flipped down the (door)stop. She was still adjusting to having a daytime job. After all slaying wasn't exactly banker hours. Her six years of college were rough, studying and slaying, but she managed to avoid attending class before 10 am. She couldn't remember a time before that she actually had to wake up before Eight O' clock. Not since high school anyway.
Almost startling her, the cell phone inside the top drawer of her desk began to ring. She opened it hastily and fished for it. Phone in hand, she took a glance at the caller ID. It was Willow, from Istanbul. "Hey Will." Buffy chimed as she fell back slightly into her large, comfortable chair. "How are things on your side of the world?" There was a moments silence and then a slight giggle. "Hey Buff...How'd Dawnie do on the office?"
"Fantabulous...My little sister is brilliant. Runs in the family you know!" Buffy grinned sheepishly.
"So I hear....Dr. Summers." Willow sighed, "I have to admit...I never thought I'd see you set up like this! I mean, Hollywood...wow! I'm so proud of you! Miss doctor to the stars!"
Buffy glanced momentarily into the waiting room and noticed that there was a man and a little boy sitting silently. The little boy looked down at his hands and fidgeted while he waited. But after a second he glanced up in her direction and she about dropped the phone. He had dark disheveled hair, and sad, brooding eyes. There was something so familiar about them. "Willow, I...I have to go. My Nine O clock is here. Talk later." Buffy closed the phone and sat it atop her desk, she rose slowly and silently and made her way to the door. "Mr. Vance?" She spoke with the slightest waiver in her voice. "I will see you and your son now."
The man and boy stood and started down the slight hallway toward her. The little boy stared at her quite intensely and then stopped cold in his tracks. "Daddy....thats her!"
Cocking her head slightly, Buffy looked down at him bewildered. "Excuse me?"
Mr. Vance dropped down to one knee and put a hand on his shoulder. "Gabriel, what do you mean son?"
The boy huddled into his fathers chest and whispered in his ear. The man wore an expression of growing concern. He then stood, still holding his son in his arms. He nodded toward Buffy's office, "May we?" She stepped aside and notioned toward the overstuffed couch on the opposite side of her desk, "Please."
The two sat down, and Mr. Vance sighed heavily. He folded his hands atop his knees and looked up at Buffy. It wasn't until then that she realized how incredibly tired he looked. He was a handsome man, with raven hair, brilliant blue eyes, and a toned physique. His lavish suit and shiny rolex implied that he did not lack in money. But his shaking hands and furrowed brow told her that it couldn't fix his problems. She shut the door quietly behind her and returned to her perch behind her desk.
"Dr. Summers, We're here because Gabriel has...dreams. Nightmares really. And I need to understand where they are coming from. He wakes up screaming almost every night...and now they affect him in the daytime. I've tried to locate some sort of trigger for his episodes, with no prevail. But they're startling, and his dreams....when he describes them, he portrays things that scare the daylights out of me."
Buffy listened intently , and tried with all of her might not to stare at Gabriel. There was something in his eyes. Something so sad...something so familiar. "What sort of things does he talk about Mr. Vance?"
"Please, just call me Urban." He attempted a weak smile before staring down at his own fidgeting hands.
"Okay Urban...Please tell me what sort of things?" Buffy sat forward and layed her arms down on the desk.
"Vampires. Demons. He describes them in such detail...It's horrible. At first we just thought he was watching the wrong sort of element on television, or that someone was telling him horror stories. But I think..." He paused momentarily and focused his attention on his son. " I think he's had these dreams since he was an infant. He used to wake us at night, every night screaming. Even before he could walk or crawl. We changed his diapers, fed him, sang to him...nothing helped. For three years we tried to figure out what could possibly cause these night terrors. Then he started daydreaming...and my wife couldn't take it anymore. She left us, and now it's like he lives in this alternate reality. One very graphic and violent. He's convinced now that vampires are real. He tells me sometimes that he's killed people...He's been dropped from all the area schools for his abnormal behavior....Dr. Summers, I need help....please."
Buffy scowled and tightened her posture slightly, "I will Urban. We'll get to the bottom of this, okay?" She smiled warmly and took out her handheld tape recorder. Placing it on the desk, she inhaled deeply. "When you arrived...Gabriel said That's her, I can only assume he was pertaining to me. Do you mind me asking what that was about?"
Urban laughed timidly, "Theres a woman in his dreams. He says she appears frequently...and in his dreams she fights the vampires with him. I know it sounds rediculous....But he thinks that you....well, he thinks you are the woman in his dreams...."
Gabriel sat forward hastily and interrupted, "Daddy, Thats HER! Her name is Buffy! She's the slayer! I know it!" He then turned to Buffy and continued to yell, "TELL HIM! Tell him about the vampires! Tell him about the Master, and The Order of Teraka! You have to! Tell him about the Mayor, and..."
Urban sternly placed his hands on his sons shoulders and shook him softly. "Gabriel! STOP!" Gabriel quieted and fell into tiny convulsions, whimpering to himself.
" I am SO sorry!" He shook his head as he spoke," This is the sort of thing I was talking about."
Buffy sat, stunned and almost paralyzed. "No...Urban....It's okay. Please....Do you mind if I talk to Gabriel....alone?"
Urban's back straightened quickly and his brow furrowed, "Certainly not! I'll hear nothing of it. What if he needs me here and I'm..."
Interrupting, Buffy placed a hand on his shoulder and focused on his crystal blue eyes " Urban, It's okay. You've done all you can...now let me help him. I promise you he will be okay. I just need him to open up a bit more and I don't think that will happen if you are here with him. You can sit right outside in the waiting room. Please."
He paused a moment before standing. He smiled timidly at his son and slowly walked toward the door. "Okay Dr. Summers...But if you need me?"
Smiling, she nodded slightly. " I will come and get you...promise."
Turning and retreating from the room, Urban sighed heavily. He made his way to the nearby waiting room and Buffy softly closed the door. Instead of going back to her perch behind her desk, she smiled warmly and sat at the edge of the couch. Gabriel looked up at her, so obviously confused, "You are Buffy Summers...aren't you?"
Grabbing his hand and holding it gingerly between her own, she nodded. " I am. And in your dreams...I am the slayer?"
He shook his head vigorously in agreement. Buffy took a deep breath and paused a moment. " And who are you in your dreams? Are you Gabriel?"
The boy frowned slightly, "No...I don't think so. I'm older. It looks like me, But I'm a vampire. A good one. And my name isn't Gabriel, everybody calls me..."
Buffy felt a tightness in her chest, and she whispered,"Angel?"
He jumped hastily off the couch and jerked his hand from hers, "Yes! It IS you, Isn't it?!"
Changing the subject, Buffy stood and notioned for him to sit back down." Gabriel, sweetie...I need you to tell me everything you can about your dreams. Okay?"

Brilliant! You are a great writer... can't wait to read more! I wanna know what happens!! 🙂

Willow's in Turkey, eh? That's cool. 😉

ooh, so very interesting! i love this, Bangel and all! can't wait to read more!

You definitely got the psychologist/patient vibe, here. And the part where Buffy calms the father and gets him to let her talk to Gabriel is brilliant (as I said before). I like the way you hint at Buffy finishing school, like there is another story there. Next eppy, please!

Continuing....

Gabriel looked down at his hands when he spoke," Well, You aren't always there. Sometimes we fight the bad guys together. But there are other dreams...scary dreams. Where I'm killing people and drinking their blood. There's always a girl around though, a vampire girl. She's meaner than me. She kills alot more...I don't like those dreams."
Trying to steady her hands, Buffy sighed. "I know you don't like these dreams sweetie. And I promise you we will get rid of them....together. Alright? But right now I just need to see everything that you see, so I can make these bad dreams go away."
She smiled with as much confidence as she could, "Now, does this vampire girl have a name?"
He shook his head softly and grumbled, "Darla...I think she's like my girlfriend or something."
Gabriel wore a look of disgust. " Dr. Summers, Do vampires have girlfriends?"
Buffy tried to stifle a laugh, and softly touched his cheek. "I'm sure they do honey."
Just then a loud voice echoed through the room from a speaker atop her desk. "Miss Summers...Your Ten O' clock appointment is here."
Frustrated, she stood and walked over to her desk. Pressing the intercom button on her phone, she scowled. " Thank you Jennifer. And remember, that's Doctor Summers! I suffered a long time to get that title...I fully expect you to use it."
She turned her gaze back over to Gabriel who was now standing up and fidgeting. "Well sweetie, we will see you tomorrow? You take daddy home and I'll make sure we have a little more time during your next visit, okay? And remember, if you have a nightmare tonight? Try to remember that it's not real... and Dr. Summers will make them all go away very soon. And that's a promise! K?"
He grinned ever so slightly and nodded before making his way toward the door. But before he could get far, Gabriel fell to the floor. Buffy gasped and hurdled the desk to get to him. She picked up his head and shoulders and layed them atop her lap. Although he was motionless, she could feel his entire body was tense. His eyes rolled back into his skull and his lips were clenched together. Reaching up and pounding on the intercom button, she yelled, panicked, " Jennifer get Mr. Vance in here...right NOW!"
Seconds later Urban, accompanied by Buffy's secretary, came rushing in. Jennifer's eyes widened and she retreated to the doorway. "Miss....Uhh, Dr. Summers....should I call someone?" She looked around frantically, her hands shaking uncontrollably, "YES!"
Urban fell to his knees and caressed his sons face with his hands. "No."
Both Buffy and Jennifer looked at him in disbelief, "Excuse me?!"
He looked up at her and shook his head, "This isn't a medical condition Dr. Summers...this is a daydream. This is what he does when he sees things. I've taken him to half a dozen specialists, and they all say that these episodes are purely mental and not physical."
Shocked, her brow furrowed and eyes widened yet again, "That's insane...LOOK at at him! A daydream does not resemble a seizure!"
Instantly Gabriel's body fell limp and his mouth opened, inhaling deeply. He blinked a few times, and then layed there, staring up at her.

ooh, this is getting really good. i liked the 'daydream' aspect, interesting.
i've told you think before, i really love your writing, and i fully expect to see more of it! 😉

Continuing....

Sitting up, his little body quivered, and he cradled his head in his hands. Jennifer heard the office phone ring and retreated back to her desk. Buffy looked at Gabriel in confusion, "Honey, are you okay? What did you see?"
He squinted up at her and continued to hold his head, "My head hurts real bad. And there were vampires. Lots of them...." He paused for a moment and whimpered, rubbing his temples.
Reaching up again and pressing the intercom button, Buffy spoke softly. "Jennifer, please bring me some children's chewable acetaminophen, and a blanket. The medicines in the top right hand cubbard in the Storage room, and the blankets are in the back closet. OH! And let my Ten 'O Clock know that it will be a few minutes."
There was a few seconds silence ,and Jennifer's mousy voice rang through the room. "Sure thing Miss Summers!"
Buffy rolled her eyes and refocused on Gabriel, "Where were these vampires? What were they doing?"
Urban scowled started to object, opening his mouth. Buffy held a single finger to his lips and shook her head slightly. He closed his mouth and exhaled.
"They're in a big garage. I think...Theres lots of wheels and tires there. But it looks dirty, like nobody's been there in a long time. And there's a family...A mommy, and a daddy..." He paused and looked down at his hands once again, "And a baby. They're on the floor, crying. The vampires are all around them. They're scared."
Buffy layed her hands atop his and continued to speak softly, "Is it Angel and Darla again?"
Shaking his head and scowling, he looked up at her. "No. I don't know their names. But it happens after the sun goes down. Tonight."
Just then, Jennifer appeared with a bottle in one hand and a fleece blanket in another. She handed the bottle to Buffy, and the blanket to Urban. Taking two tablets out of the bottle and handing them to the boy, she spoke in a confused manor. "Okay...so. Let me try to understand you honey...You see things before they happen?"
He chewed the tablets slowly as his father wrapped him in the blanket, "Yes." He mumbled between chews.
"How do you know?" Buffy stood slowly as she spoke and reached out to help the two off the floor.
Taking her hand, they stood, and Gabriel looked up at her and smiled. " I just know. But it's okay Dr. Summers....you'll help them. Won't you?"
She returned the smile and touched his face gently, "Sure I will sweetie." Looking at Urban, she raised her eyebrows questionably, "We'll see you tomorrow?"
The two shook their heads in unison and made their way toward the door. Urban paused to look back at her momentarily and smiled, "Thank you." His gaze lingered until they were gone.
Jennifer sighed and her eyes widened, "Wow! You should charge them extra!"
Frowning and returning to her desk, Buffy snapped. "Jennifer, coffee please."
Rolling her eyes, her secretary disappeared once again.
Picking up her hand held recorder Buffy spoke hastily, "Gabriel Vance, a young 5 year old, has violet daydreams, accompanied by disturbing night terrors." With a furrowed brow she paused for a second. "No, not daydreams. Patient has seizures accompanied by daydreams....NO!" She sat back in her chair, deep in thought. What happened to that little boy, and how did he see these things? " Patient has..."
Just then there was an unfamiliar voice from the doorway, "Visions."
Buffy looked up, startled, then gasped. There stood a tall, well dressed, green in color, demon. She snatched a wooden stake from the inside of her jacket and stood swiftly. The demon threw his hands up and smiled coyly, "Woah, woah, WOAH! Slow down princess! Don't hate me because I'm colorful!"
Cautiously lowering her stake, she cocked an eyebrow. "Who are you?"
The demon strolled into the office and smiled, extending his hand to Buffy as she looked on warily. "The names Lorne."

I love the reaction to Lorne, and his reaction to Buffy. You nailed him cold, NSM! Keep it coming, you're doing fine! And the byplay with the secretary is priceless!

I loved Lornes entrance! very good! Don't hate me because i'm colourful lol!

LOl keep going, i like it!
You have Buffy's bossyness down to a t!

Oh, wonderful.
Now I have one more writer to be jealous of on the Buffy Boards! *[collapses to the floor in a fetal position, sucking his thumb]* 😛

Seriously though, NSM, there is really no advice that I can offer to you here, because your writing has it all. I've always said you were quite the skilled writer, and you've proved that once again on this story thread.

I have only one minor bitch. Everything is so bunched together. Separating your paragraphs into smaller ones here and there makes for easier reading. Just a suggestion, don't hate me. 😛

Now, finish up your story. You have hungry fans here waiting for their next bite of Sacrifice. It's not kosher to starve the hungry. 😉

Kick ass, girlie. :: tu ::

Yay! Lorne!! I agree the way you brought him in was brilliant. Heh... you keep leaving the story off right where I want more. Once again great writing! I tremble at your skills 😉 Keep it up. (please)

Accepting his hand skeptically in one of hers, and setting her stake atop her desk with the other, "B-Buffy. Summers...Buffy Summers. I'm sorry for the aggressive reaction, it's just... Well, the last well dressed demon that came to visit turned everything into a Broadway musical. And set people on fire. But I think the musical part was most painful."
Smiling down at her, Lorne motioned toward the couch. "May I?"
Buffy once again abled the intercom and spoke with a stern voice, "Jennifer. Cancel all of my afternoon appointments. Apologize to my Ten O' Clock, reschedule. Give them the next weeks appointments at no charge. Then go home." Backing away from the speaker, she extended her arm invitingly. "Please. Have a seat. Would you like any coffee, Diet Coke...We have orange juice."
Shaking his head and chuckling, Lorne declined. "No thank you sweetie...I just had a half a dozen Sea Breezes. I'm hydrated."
The room filled with Jennifer's shrill, squeaky voice once again, "Pardon me Miss summers, But are you kidding me?! We just opened back up and we've only been here for an hour! Plus the Chavez's are very unhappy and they're going to flip their lid!"
Buffy rubbed her forehead with one hand and clenched her jaw, before attacking the intercom button and growling into the speaker. "And if I weren't paying you an outrageous fortune an hour I'd say that might be a problem! I didn't ask you for your opinion Jennifer, and trust me when I say I DONT WANT IT! Just do as I ask, and go HOME. You can take the day paid if it will get you off of my nerve!"
Sitting back in her chair and taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself down. " I'm so sorry...My secretary has a listening deficiency. And I have a short fuse. Anyway Mr. Lorne...Do you know Gabriel Vance? Are you aware of his problems?"
Sitting forward, the demons expression went from pleasant to extremely serious. " No...I don't know a Gabriel. However, I do know an Angel. I believe he's a prior acquaintance of yours as well? See, pumpkin...I have what you might call visions, myself. I've always had them...Sometimes they tend to be more of a burden than a blessing, but they do make me some decent deniro. I had one last night. I was at The Martini Room down the street and there was a woman on stage doing her revision of "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue". See, I can read people...their future, their past...And sometimes their families. But only while they are singing. And this woman about made me choke on my lime wedge...She was Angels mother."
Buffy's eyes widened, and she shook her head in disbelief. "Come again?"
He gave a knowing grin and sighed, "Did Angel tell you anything about the Shansu Proficy? It was supposed to..."
Finishing his sentence, she rode the edge of her chair anxiously. "Make him human, Uh-huh. Go on."
"Right...human. But the unselfish guy that he is, Angel signed that away to try to save the world for a little while. I guess The Powers That Be saw that as pretty righteous and decided to make him mortal after all. But theres a catch. He's now mortal, and of sound mind and body. With the soul of a 200 plus year vampire...But the memories too. See precious...He doesn't know he's Angel...yet. Over the years The Powers have weaned in memories from his past, Both good and bad. Can you imagine what that will do to a child's psyche? He's doomed to live the broody, traumatic life he just experienced all over again."
Staring intently at the ground, Buffy remained silent for a moment. "Okay...so what are the daytime visions that he has? He told me things that he swears haven't happened yet."
"They haven't. They're visions, exactly that. See, they were passed on to him from a friend of ours just before he died. And I guess they just sort of carried over. But now that he's human, he won't live to be a teen having them. They are meant for someone with demon strength, and power. Not a tiny little thing like him. He's got a hard road ahead...a real hard road."

Okay, before I post my next installment. I want to say that yes, I am aware that my spelling in the last installment was not exactly impeccable. I had prophecy issues. So OM and KD...I give you permission to smack me a few times for failing to use my spell check...Just keep away from the face...LOL
Okay, moving on....

Buffy sat in silence for what seemed like an eternity. Her hands began to shake and she placed them atop her desk to steady herself, "How could I possibly help him now? I'm a fighter, a warrior...well, and a doctor. But my point is, I battle with my fists...I can't fight visions and memories."
Lorne smiled warmly and stood from his perch on the couch. He strolled over to the doorway and leaned his shoulder against the frame.
"See sweetie...I believe the help you need is in the form of a hot little number whose name rhymes with tree, and is hot up top. You get me?"
She laughed softly and shook her head, "Willow."
He pointed at her in shotgun style, making a clicking sound with his tongue. "Number one with a bullet beautiful. She can get you where you want to go." Suddenly the look upon his face became quite somber, "But remember, at the end...you will be the only one that can help him. And sugar? I wouldn't procrastinate on this one. His visions are only going to get worse...take it from a front seat ticket holder of the last human that sported those things. Not pretty."
Lorne smiled once more at Buffy as she sat, frozen at her desk. "See you around, kitten." Then without another word he turned and walked away.
She sat in silence, her mind racing. Suddenly, Jennifer appeared in the doorway. "Does he know he's got green make-up all over his face? Oh! Is he like, an actor or something?! Do you think you can get me an autograph?"
Shaking her head, Buffy sighed. "What is it now Jennifer?"
Scowling at her boss, the girl shrugged her shoulders. " I was just wondering if I still get paid lunch on days you decide to shut us down."
Nursing a slight headache, she rubbed her temples. "YES. Paid lunch, paid breaks...I will even reimburse you the gas for your trip home if it will get you the hell out of my office!"
Satisfied, Jennifer smiled. "Cool." Then she turned and left.
Without a moments hesitation Buffy retrieved her cell phone and dialed a long distance number. It rang a few times before someone picked up.
"Willow." She spoke in a no nonsense tone of voice, " I need you on the first flight to Cali."
Suddenly Willow began to ramble frantically, "Is Dawnie okay? Are you okay? What happened? Why'd you hang up so quick last time? Is Xander in trouble..."
Speaking loudly to interrupt, "No. This has nothing to do with Dawn or Xander...It's Angel."

**********

Dawn sat nervously in the restaurant, awaiting her date. She took out her mirror from her purse and checked herself over. The dress she picked for the occasion was black and seductive. She wanted to make a stellar second impression, since their first meeting was less than ideal. She giggled to herself as she thought about the look on his face when he ran into the back of her Mini Cooper. Glancing at her watch, she began to fidget. He still had a few minutes until seven o' clock, yet she began to worry anyway.
Suddenly there was a hand on her shoulder and a voice from behind her. "I'm sorry...Am I late?"
Dawn exhaled, and looked up and over her shoulder at him. He looked fabulous in a pair of pressed khakis and a fitted black shirt. Smiling, she spoke with a bashful tone, "Hey Connor."

*screams* Connor!! YAY!! oh, you made me so happy!! lol
i loved this update. the dialogue was very fresh and realistic...i can't believe how well you write for Lorne. he is one of the characters i could never write convincingly. you just nailed him, sweety.
oh, i can't wait to see where this is going, now that Connor's turned up!!
keep writing!
