OK. I am completely and totally pissed at my mother. I have been raving about Firefly and how much I want to see Serenity for the last WEEK. She tells me today 'Oh, I won tickets to some movie sneak peek tonight on Friday." I was like, "oh what movie?" cause I'm thinking Into the Blue. She says "That thing from the guy who did Buffy. I'm not going to go, I gave them to Wendy". I freaked. Completely freaked out. My mother won FOUR tickets to a preview showing (tonight) of Serenity ON FRIDAY and didn't tell me so I could come home, even after listening to me rave for at least a week. And WEndy didn't even want to see the movie that much!!! ARGH!

Sorry, sorry, ok [/rant]

Back to the marketing campaign: Monday Night Football was like, inundated with Serenity ads. It was neat.

*grumble* inconsiderate parents who never listen *grumble grumble*

I've never watched Firefly before, but I've always been curious. It sucks that the ads aren't really telling you much of what it's all about, but I may go break my movie theatre boycott and go see it anyways since it's Joss' project.

I have never seen Firefly before this afternoon. I checked out that Firefly Marathan on Sci-fi and I gotta say that I am very impressed. It is a cool show. I can't wait to see the movie. It's crazy though watching it because the three main characters are all baddies for Buffy and Angel. I keep seeing Caleb, Jasmine and Hamilton, it's freakin me out!!!!

Yeah, and without spoiling you about his role the guy that played Knox/Holden (on respectively Angel and Buffy) will also be in it at some point.

Anyhow, still no ads here... and it opens here next week! I've been bothering everybody I know with this movie but I'm not sure whether I'll generate any oversea's visitors this way. 😉

The largest september opening ever was "Sweet Home Alabama" at $35.6 million in "˜02. "Emily Rose" just got $30.1 million"”which was apparently very surprising to the pundits. But again, it's a PG-13 horror flick, hugely popular genre.

I thought I'd read that Serenity's budget was roughly $40-45 million. Is that right? I've also heard that a typical ad/promotion budget is about $25-35 million.

If Serenity's a slow burner with good word-of-mouth, maybe a huge opening would be less than critical? But, here's to hoping it's huge.

Boxofficemojo.com says Serenity's opening in 2,100 theaters. "Into the lue" will be 2,700.

Ahh, see? Ebert likes retro-nostalgia. The Buck Rogers factor comes into play...

"Serenity" is made of dubious but energetic special effects

LOL! That's what you get for $40 million, Roger.

I haven't watched Firefly, so I won't be seeing Serenity before I have had to chance to catch up with the show on DVD. I just hope, for the sake of Joss, that it does well.

He NEEDS to become Hollywood's next big thing.

I hate when people say this. As if Joss thought EVERYONE had seen Serenity and made it completely impossible to understand without seeing Firefly first. Bah.

Anyhoo

HAPPY SERENITY DAY EVERYONE! Enjoy the movie! Everyone, EVERYONE Go see It. If you decide to go see "Into the Blue" instead please let me know so that I may create a voodoo doll of you. 🙂

SERENITY IN 40 MINUTES!!! I am SOOOO STOKED!!

I love Jessica Alba, but Into the Blue MUST FLOP.

AWESOME! 40 minutes? I'm so jealous. You must write a full review when you get back. I guess we'll need a spoiler tag for this topic now.... or a new topic.

oh and I meant to say firefly up there not serenity. oops.

Yeah. Upon request, I got my lazy butt in gear, and posted such a thread as per PG's outline above. (Thanks BTW). It's here -

I wanna make my predictions now, cause there's only one more day till the receipts come in, isn't there?

I say Serenity will finish 3rd for the weekend behind "Into the Blue", and "The Greatest Game Ever Played".

My thinking is the mainstream promotion was so much better for those two. Also Serenity is opening in fewer theatres than Into the Blue. If Serenity does somehow finish #1 for the weekend studios will really have to look at the novel way Serenity was promoted via the internet, and advanced screenings.

I still think Serenity is going to have good legs though. By the end of the month I expect it to be doing something impressive box-office-wise. That's my prediction. :compsmili

I just want to get to know the people, first. I want to be familar with everything before I see the movie.

I can't see it for a while anyway, as it is rated 15 here and I'm not 15, yet.

Most people were predicting number one with 15 million, so it is a tad disappointing. Still, it may hold steady in the coming weeks.

Meh they also predicted The island to make more than 12 million to start. Think about Serenity v Island in terms of cost. I think the fact that The Island made 12 million to start is a helluva lot more disappointing than Serenity getting 10.1 to start. Also think about all the other movies it was up against. Think about the fact that all the other movies had names behind them. "Stars" with selling power. I want more. I hope that word of mouth will spurn it to better heights but I take some victory in us doing 3 million better than Into the Blue. Also today at my 5th showing. It was pretty full in there. On a Sunday? pretty awesome.
