Seriously, how ridiculous is it no one financially helped Buffy?!

Also The Magic Box might not be able to support another employee. It is a small business.

I think Anya just wanted to hoarde the money away from any other possible employee. 'No, the, uh, budget's too tight. Can't take any more staff. I meean there's already me here and...me. So no!'

That would be very Anya. 🙂

There are several major plot holes in S6, used to press home themes rather ham sisterly.

This is one of them.

S6 is, according to Joss, about dealing with life, so Buffy is handed the financial boogeyman on a platter. All the shoulda, coulda, wouldas would have gotten in the way, so we are asked to accept it.

Seeing as how we regularly buy into all the fantasy of the show, I guess I will manage to swallow this one...even though it's bugged me more than most issues on the show. It's a powerful example that dealing with real life can be even harder than facing the spirit world, and that Buddy's super powers are useless against it. One more way to remind us how alone she is, or at very least perceives herself to be.

Some of it is attributed to Buddy's moral high ground. She refuses financial help from Spike, because obviously it would be ill gotten gains, and it would have put her in a situation of obligation to him. She turns down Anya's suggestion she charge for her svcs on moral reasoning.

Interestingly she takes money from Giles...though his money essentially comes from being paid for doing a job that saves the lives of innocent people. I guess it's cleansed by being one level removed from the actual hands on slaying.

Police, firefighters and ems workers are paid for life saving...so maybe the moral issue only applies to mystical issues. We are consistently shown that there is a different sort of "economy" in the mystic world.

Watching the show week to week is a vastly different experience than binge watching and re watching. Sometimes things are presented in awkward ways or we are beaten over the head with themes because it's assumed that at least a week has gone by since we've seen the characters, that we may have missed an episode or two and need to be reminded etc.

I try to keep that in mind. We have the entire series set in front of us. Most of us have watched it umpteen times. I know those characters better than I know most people I see everyday. When the show first ran the writers had to address the challenges of week to week forgetfulness, people who came to the show without the benefit of having seen the first five seasons etc.

These issues bug me as much as anyone, and they make for great discussion. Re binge watching the show this past month has me bristling and cringing over lots of this kind of stuff. I'm trying to handle it gracefully, but I was shouting at the screen about this very subject just a few days ago.

I'm a Spuffy, so personally...I would have taken Spike up on his offer, but Buffy couldn't and shouldn't have. Would have ended up like some twisted form of prostitution given their relationship, which was already twisted enough.

I never quite figured out how to do that since most victims run away. Angel had an office, and a seer, plus phones and advertising. Buffy rescues the human from the vamp and the human runs. Makes billing a real challenge. 😉

Maybe those flash cameras that some cities use to ticket people who run red lights! Lol.

I was thinking more like being paid by the city not the individual savees...but that would have made for a great comic episode in S6, and Anya would have found a way if one could have been found.

You charge BEFORE you save them.. You grab the vampire by the ear, put them in a time out, and get paid.. if they don't want to pay you just let go of the ear. Easy peasy.

I can see Anya tackling them and giving them a bill. Given the city govt of Sunnyhell, I kinda doubt they'd consider slaying a good thing. 😀

She's need a partner - have to work with Spike. He could hold the vampire and he would have no moral qualms. Actually this is sounding like a gig for Faith. I think she's be better at collecting!

Actually she and Spike could be partners (ew, I feel dirty just typing that) Spike can go into establishments and make with the grrr, argh, and Buffy can swoop in and save the day. That's the oldest con in the book. Plus wuttle Spikey can feel like a big bad again by scaring humans.

As I recall, he was freelancing in that area. And don't be dissing Spike😀

Dont need to be a seer to predict how badly it would end. 😛 I think the 40 siameese and Spike's short career as a doctor was in a failed attempt to help out Buffy financially.
But why can't willow abuse magic a bit more with a pipes repair spell or some hacking of funds from terrorist organizations? That's a good thing, right?

Spells don't work on plumbing. The witches I knew that did a spell to fix their plumbing never had any success so it makes sense then that Willow would not even try. I think plumbing is immune to witchery.

I always wondered why the love of her life - Angel - didn't pitch in. He was doing reasonably well by then. He knew about the money in the Hyperion, and he had bought himself a hotel.
Angel Investigation's financial status was highly inconsistent in early AtS S3.

Angel had genuine panic about money after Connor was born. Yet he still pays (I suppose) the salary and everything for employees. Maybe it's Jasmine who forced all of them into thinking only Connor and forgetting about everyone else. So money for Connor, no money for Buffy.

I never got why Buffy just didn't work at the Magic Box. I'm positive that the pay would've been a lot better (The Magic Box is a successful business and the staff is Giles/Anya with nobody else to pay), there wouldn't be the meat smell all over her, the awful uniform/hat, the patronising co-workers. Plus she might actually get to learn more about the supernatural biz and have a nearby space to kick back andf relax.
Honesty, I think she could've lived without the free burgers.
Because of the time circle and Mummy hand trauma? She cried in the Magic Box and went drunk afterwards. She didn't get drunk after Parker.

Yeah. Another explanation could be that plumbing fixing magic ritual needs the ashes of US dollars, which is more expensive than hiring a plumber LOL.

I agree. Especially with Giles being gone, Anya could use another helping hand.

Maybe Anya didn't want to hire her? 🙁

I doubt it. If Anya had any objections, she'd have voiced them before when Buffy worked for her and Giles.

Re-watching Season 6, I found the correct answer!

BUFFY: Well, I appreciate it. Muchly. You saved me from having to accept Giles' offer to work at the Magic Box. I mean, retail? Yeee. I'd rather be dead. Again.

Beats working at the Double Meat Palace. I'm just glad it came from her, and not Anya.

I suspect it might be somewhat like working for a parent, so I can understand her not wanting to work for Giles.

I'm wondering - couldn't Buffy have taken over the gallery? Or sold it?

I forgot to say that this quote is from Life Serial; but it shows that for Buffy, working at the Magic Box was out of question. Even before the mummy hand incident, she hated working there:

BUFFY: And, and my job at the magic shop? I was bored to tears even *before* the hour that wouldn't end!

Where did it ever say she owned it? I just remember her saying she run it. I always thought she was the GM or something. I know everyone says she owned it, but was it ever explicitly stated?

I honestly don't know.

Mr. Pole: You can recall every friggin B-movie in the last 40 years but cant recall that! Shameful.

All I can say is there isn't a doubt in my mind that Joyce owned the gallery, and I wouldn't have based that idea on nothing.

🙂

Joyce Summers for what it's worth
