Should Angel Have Told Buffy?

Do you honestly think the real problem is that Angel didn't tell her? When it clearly is, for most part of the responses in this thread, Spike's call and Spike's only.

During the incorporeal stage of Spike's return, it WAS pike's call, and he made it, with statements like "Where's Buffy?" as practically the first thing to come out of his mouth upon reappearing, and "You can't keep us apart." That, to me, indicates that Spike really wanted to know about Buffy's welfare and to be reunited with her. It wasn't until later that he got that "how can you top an exit like that?" attitude. Initially, he was very vocal about wanting to find and return to Buffy. As for getting someone else to call her for him, I admit, that wasn't very bright on his part, but the writers had to come up with some kind of reason to keep him around. He was a regular on the show. The point is, initially, yes, it was Spike's call, and he made it. Angel and his staff simply chose not to heed that call.

But why exactly should they? There was no love lost between any of them? Why would they jump at the chance to help him when they knew that had the shoe been on the other foot, he never would have even thought about doing the same, despite how much he loved her too.

Even if he was a little less than capable of going about contacting her himself when he was incorporeal there was and is nothing stopping him doing it now, apart from either pride or doubt. I'd lean more with doubt.

And it seems that Spike is incorrect and due to his own misgivings Angel CAN keep him and Buffy apart. Except Spike is actually the one doing that.

Agreed. Spike never actually requested that someone contact Buffy on his behalf, which he could have easily done.

All he said was "You can't keep her from me", which Angel never attempted to do, neither when he was incorporeal or solid. In fact Spike actually wanted to keep Angel away from Buffy if anything.

As you said, Spike's reasons for not seeing Buffy are insecurity. The whole speech he made in In Harm's Way was pride. Harmony was actually right, Buffy wouldn't care about the whole grand exit if she could see him again, but as Spike actually stated in TGIQ, and in Chosen, he doesn't believe he really has a shot with her and never really believed she truly loved him, so he bottles it. I know he's faced monsters and demons and slayers etc but when it came down to it, he was scared. Scared that she would reject him.

At least we agree on the part about Angel being tho one who could and did keep Buffy and Spike apart, at least during those first few episodes. As for Spike being the one who was actually doing it, I can only say, from the very depths of my being, and with the most sincere of motives,..."Huh?" Exactly how do we come by that assumption? Was that one of those "signaled her with my eyes things like when Angel actually stabbed himself in the chest in order to stop the apocalypse at the end of Buffy Season 2?

How exactly did you come to the conclusion that Spike was the reason Angel and Buffy seperated? :?

Um, I didnt...I just looked back at what I said and it was in reference to the quote by Spike saying 'You can't keep or us apart' or whatever, so the 'him' I refer to is Spike not Angel. It was a throw away comment that if Angel is to blame for why Buffy doesn't know Spike is alive then he (Angel) can keep them (Buffy and Spike) apart. Except it's not Angel doing that, it's Spike.

That's what I meant, but I can see why the use of 'him' threw you off.

Again I think my poor use of the pronoun him has led to the confusion here. I'm not suggesting that Spike keeps/kept Angel and Buffy apart, if you see the first bit of this post I've cleared that up. I think. Basically as I mean Spike and Buffy being kept apart, Spike is the one doing it not Angel.

Flannen i have to say you express things about Angel i tottaly agree with...

i still believe that if someone should communicate with Buffy about Spike is Spike himself...for some reason he doesn't want Buffy to know he is alive again...so why blame Angel?it is a matter of personal will...

My opinion is that even though it wasn't Angel's "place" to tell her- Spike should have gotten in touch with her himself to tell her- but it seemed out of character. Angel has a history of butting into Buffy's life because he feels he has to protect her to some extent. I honestly thought it was weird that he didn't tell her, even if he shouldn't have. Does that make sense? But then again, I understand why he wouldn't want to, knowing Spike and Buffy had "gotten pelvic". AWKWARD. 😉

Whoa. Well, I bet you were all wondering why I hadn't yet inserted myself aggressively into this discussion yet, eh? (Just trying to live up to my title.)

Honestly, I'm really not sure where I stand on this issue. Its so complicated.

Now, before I attempt to answer white avenger's original question

My question is, knowing how Buffy felt about Spike, knowing that she believed him lost to her forever, should Angel, as a caring friend, have tried to contact Buffy to tell her that Spike was back? And if not, why not?

i'd like to say that I will try very hard to not let my "Spuffyness" bias my answer. Of course, nothing would make me more happy than for a happy Spuffy reunion to take place, but I will try to remain objective.

Ok, here I go.

I think you've all made some great points. A few I choose to comment on:

Personally, I think that if Angel cared as much for Buffy as he claimed to, he would have felt obligated to at least put forth the effort of telling her and easing at least that portion of her grief at the loss of friends and loved ones in the battle. Not doing so seems to me to be an act of pure jealousy or another instance if Angel's bad habit of making decisions for others without consulting them first.

You make a valid point, but I think you overestimate Angel. I don't doubt that he cares for her very much, but he sees Spike as a threat, or as you out it, he was jealous.

On the other hand, though, consider this point made by Flannen:

You can't lay the blame on Angel here for what Spike should have done.

Honestly, I think this might sum up the entire argument. While browsing through this thread, this seems to be what everyone agrees on.

So Spike was a ghost and being dragged into Hell. True. I think we can all agree that Spike had every intention to return to her until BAM he realizes he couldn't. Leave, that is. At that point, he was more then free to call her. And he didn't (assuming, obviously, that her cell survived the destruction of Sunnydale.)

In fact, if you are suggesting that this is Angel making decisions for people again, I would have to completely disagree. If Angel had have told Buffy about Spike being alive, THAT would have been making decisions for people. He would have been making the decision for Spike, when the ball was entirely in his court. So, no, Angel should absolutely not have intervened in this instance, regardless of how much he cared for Buffy.

Well why Spike didn't called her herself. It's not Angels job. What would he say? "Hello biggest love of my life your dead lover is back to life!". It's not Angel's place.

Princess Buffy makes a good point. It would have been awkward BUT if you love someone, if there was any way, wouldn't you reduce their suffering?

Or, as white avenger stated far more eloquently;
If he knew, as he almost certainly did, that she was mourning all of the casualties from Sunnydale, he would no doubt have also known that finding out that one of the ones whose death she felt responsible for was, in fact, not dead (or as "not dead" as a vampire could possibly be) would have eased at least a part of her pain. That's not interfering, that's being a friend.

This is a great point I think deserves some thought. Sure, you could say that Angel "dismissed" the importance of Spike in Buffy's life, but come on Angel knew what Spike meant to her ("˜He's in my heart.')

But Spike also hated Angel which is why I think that if it had been the other way around Spike wouldn't have interfered either.

This is also a highly valid point. But we'll never know, will we? If Angel had died now, in L.A. fighting alongside Spike, would Spike call Buffy up and tell her the bad news? Who knows. We'll probably never know.

As wa says;
My assertion is that, if he is so intent upon easing the pain and suffering of those people who he cares for, why, in this case, when doing so would have almost certainly been appreciated by those concerned, did he fail to do so?

Like..when Willow called Cordy to inform A.I. of Buffy's death in "˜The Gift'?

As she says below,

...when Buffy came back from the dead Willow phoned Cordy and informed AI

Surely, Willow did this not because she had any obligation too, but because Spike was her friend and she wanted to decrease his pain. How is this any different then if Angel had chosen to call Buffy to tell her Spike was alive? So basically, you can't believe that Angel shouldn't have told Buffy about Spike if you believe that Willow was in the right to tell Angel about Buffy when she was brought back. Get what I'm saying?

Spike has been unwilling to inform Buffy,he had the chance with Andrew but he didn't order him to do so...what does Angel has to do with that?

If I understand correctly, people are arguing over not why SPIKE didn't tell Buffy he was alive after he became corporeal (we already know his reasoning behind that) BUT why Angel didn't tell her immediately when Spike was still a ghost "“ correct?

If Angel's mission is to help the helpless, or hopeless, why couldn't he have helped poor helpless, incorporeal Spike, and, at the same time, given hope to poor, grieving Buffy, who had given up hope of ever seeing someone who she said that she loved?

Fair enough, but does Angel know Buffy loves Spike? I don't believe Spike ever told Angel that Buffy told him that. I could be wrong.

*goes to look over transcripts*

Or maybe not calling Buffy actually WAS his decision.

Surely, it crossed his mind. I guess he dismissed it rather quickly.

Come to think of it, both Spike and Angel, despite acting in exactly the opposite way, managed to achieve the same result. They kept Buffy away from someone who she loved For her own good, of course. Kind of ironic, when you look at it that way.

Perhaps the two are more alike than we like to admit. Irony is Joss' specialty.

I doubt Angel would have told Spike considering he didn't even tell the Burkles what happened to Fred"¦

Excellent point. Forgot about that. Perhaps that was Angel's decision as well, as to not upset the Burkles. Yet, was it really his place?

As for Spike doing the same? Well he admitted that if he could, he'd keep Buffy away from Angel.

There's that shiny irony white avenger spoke of earlier.

Anyway the only way Buffy could have seen incorporeal Spike is if she went to W&H and I doubt that Angel wanted her near that place despite his unconvincing company line. More than anything I doubt he wanted Buffy to see him in that position.

Agreed. Angel did have his own personal reasons for not calling Buffy. The question is, shouldn't he be thinking of Buffy's welfare before his own? Besides, I doubt Buffy would have come down there. She was busy, but she surely would have wanted to chat with Spike on the phone, perhaps talked to Fred about how it was coming along with making him corporeal, and then demanded once it was possible, to have him come to Rome and see her.

Once Spike is capable of seeing her it's an issue between the two of them.

I think I agree with this statement. It's hard not too.

I agree that if anyone were to inform Buffy of Spike's return, it should have been Spike himself. But that doesn't mean Angel's choice to stay out of this one wasn't motivated by pure jealousy.

Yep. *shakes head*

He picks and chooses which situations to get involved with depending on how much of Buffy's "happiness" and "well being" benefits him as well.

Paramour, I agree with your entire post, but this above line I thought was particularly true.

Angel is only "human." He is motivated by jealousy at times, and perhaps this was one of those instances.

"¦but, hey, couldn't he dictate an e-mail?

Well, not to nitpick, but I doubt Buffy had email in the castle.

As to why Angel didn't tell Buffy, well, I think its because he doesn't actually know where Buffy is. You watch his body language in that opening scene of Just Rewards. Spike asks after Buffy, "Europe, last I heard from her" is all the information Angel gives. He looks sideways, shifts his eyes as one does when they are trying to get away with misinformation or trying to seem more knowledgeable than they actually are. Could it be that Angel and Buffy have not communicated in the intervening nineteen days since the destruction of Sunnydale? Has Angel already got his Wolfram and Hart resources trying to track her moves? Is it possible he knows as little of Buffy's movements as Spike currently does?

This is worth considering. It's definitely likely that Angel did not know about Buffy's whereabouts at that point.

Asking this is no different than asking why Andrew didn't tell Buffy about Spike. Or maybe he has, and we just don't know it yet.

No way. It totally is. Andrew was sworn to secrecy. Spike specifically asked him not to tell Buffy about him. Andrew is a man of his word, apparently. Besides, I think he's kind of scared of Spike. No way he's going to betray that trust.

He's basically in love with Spike. No way he wants to be on his bad side.

This may be true, but so what? Spike would have done exactly the same thing if it was the other way round. So the guy let himself be ruled by his emotions for a while?

We don't know if Spike would have done the same thing in this situation. And while yes, Angel is entitled to be "ruled" by his emotions at times, in this instance, perhaps Buffy's pain was more important then his?

I just get the impression that for some people Angel just can't win. He's berated for interfering and then berated when he decides not to get involved in something.

We hold the characters he love, heroes, to a high standard. I don't want you to think that we are singling out Angel; if Buffy had done this, we'd be arguing about it as well.

Angel can win, and does. There have been decisions he's made that I agree with. For instance, the decision him and Spike made in "˜The Hole in the World' to allow Fred to die to save countless others. Yes, they did make this decision for Fred, but I am sure it's what she would have wanted.

And also, is no-one thinking of The Immortal? Maybe Spike would have found the time to tell Buffy, if he hadn't found out that something was going on between the Immortal and Buffy.

Well, wasn't this the reason they decided to finally "give up"? After seeing she'd "moved on"?

You mean like ignoring Spike's request and divulging information he specifically doesn't want revealed?

I think that white avenger was referring to BEFORE Spike decided he didn't want Buffy to know he was back.

If you look at it, Angel had a lot of crap to worry about"¦

True, but in theory, he had time to pick up the phone, didn't he?

So really with Angel being a little busy trying to run an inter-dimensional evil law firm and Spike being unreliable (a.k.a. taking brief trips to hell) then actively not wanting to tell her, Angel is in the clear.

When oh when will you stop your war on poor Angel.

Good point.

War? Nah. We're just discussing, my friend. Harmless fun.

I ask: When will people end the war on Spike? When will people forgive him for what happened in 'Seeing Red', seeing as how Buffy obviously has? etc etc

Honestly, if he had have got involved and been the one to tell Buffy, the Spuffy consensus would be that Angel was totally out of order for being the one to break the 'good news' (pfft) and not let Spike be the one to tell her.

Again, great point. Who knows though, since that isn't the case.

Which is still what this comes down to? Do you honestly think the real problem is that Angel didn't tell her? When it clearly is, for most part of the responses in this thread, Spike's call and Spike's only.

And like Wesley said, Angel had his own war to wage, why would he be waste time concerning himself in a situation between two people who would probably both be pissed at him for getting involved in.

Well, why would he waste his time? For the purpose that it might make Buffy feel better, I think. To know her friend Spike was alive,
just like when Angel called Buffy after he found out she was alive.

AWKWARD

Yes, it did seem out of character to a point. Perhaps what wa said is true "“ perhaps Angel did consider telling Buffy and then dismissed it, thinking she'd be "better off" without knowing.

Again, I don't think the possibly of the situation becoming awkward should be a deterrent. You think it wasn't difficult for Willow to tell Cordy Buffy was dead?

Well, now that you've all has the displeasure of having to read my incredibly long commentary, I will attempt to arrive at my own stance on this issue.

I think"¦.after some thought, that it wasn't Angel's place to call Buffy and tell her that Spike was alive. Yet, this doesn't mean he is in the clear. He still could have done it, as we all know Angel believes "rules" are meant to be broken 😉 As to why Angel didn't tell her (didn't know where she was, didn't care, jealousy, whatever) that's open to interpretation.

Spike is to blame for Buffy know knowing he is alive. Plain and simple.

Or to be completely honest; the writers are. Bad move on their part. It was completely out of character for Spike to not go to Buffy once he was corporeal, but as wa mentioned, they needed him on the show.

Ultimately, in the end, yes, Spike did decide not to try and find Buffy. At that point, I agree, the decision was his and his alone. My contention from the beginning, however, was that, initially, when he first materialized in Angel's office, that was not the case. At that point, his first thoughts were about Buffy's welfare and her whereabouts, followed immediately by an attempt, futile as it certainly would have been at that point, to go in search of her all on his own. At that point, Spike wanted to find Buffy and (I personally believe) she, if she had known that he had returned, would want to at least see him, if not be with him on a longer term basis, corporeal or not. Perhaps Spike might be faulted for not trying to get someone to assist him in finding Buffy, but which total stranger would he have asked? He knew exactly three people at Wolfram and Hart, and had no real reason to trust either of them. As for the others, they were, as I said, strangers, and it's hard enough for Spike to ask for help from people who he knows. The only time that I can ever recall him asking for help was when he had first had his chip installed, and couldn't feed himself. Maybe there were other times, but I can't recall any. The point is, the idea of asking for help from anyone has almost never ever occurred to him (I remember the other time that he asked for help. He asked Fred to help him not get permanently sucked into hell.)

Ultimately, the reason that Spike never left in search of Buffy was that he was by that time a regular member of the "Angel" cast, and he could not be allowed to leave, while Sarah was either too busy or, more likely, simply reluctant to reprise a role that she had put behind her. There were ultimately three reasons that were used to keep Spike there. Initially, he couldn't leave the vicinity of the W&H building. Understandable. The second reason, his reluctance to "return from the grave after going out in a blaze of glory," was both poorly thought out and totally un-Spike-like, which is most likely why the third reason was introduced: a sense of duty. ("It's coming, Angel. We both know it. I don't like you. Probably never will. But bein' here, it's what's right. It's what SHE would do..." That isn't the exact quote, but it's close) Finally, a believable, in character reason for Spike to stay in a place where he wasn't wanted, doing a job that no one else appreciated. That's in character. It's what Spike does. And if that had been put forth as his original reason for staying with Angel, I would have had no reason whatsoever to object.

That isn't what happened, however. Before we could get to a believable reason for Spike to stay in Los Angeles, we had to contend with two lame excuses, the first of which was that Spike wanted to be with Buffy and had no way to accomplish it. During that time, if he was as concerned about Buffy's happiness and welfare as he had always claimed to be, Angel should have put forth an honest effort to inform her that Spike had returned. If nothing else, it would have shown Buffy that he could place her happiness before any petty jealousies that he might feel for Spike.

(That's my story, and I'm sticking to it)

Agreed. Good points. I do wish Angel had told Buffy about Spike, but sadly, he didn't.
Allright, first off Flannen and White Avenger you guys are awesome. Way to defend your thoughts. Well, so hmmmmm...what do I think? It's almost all been said.

If Angel had told Buffy Spike was alive it could have seemed like Angel was giving up. I think he knew in his heart that Spike and Buffy loved each other....but I believe Angel and Buffy will always love each other.... in a different way. By giving up I mean letting Spike have her. Angel couldn't do that. It's just one theory.

I think Spike wanted to find Buffy, maybe even more then Angel. But how could he? Maybe he wouldn't live up to the idea that he really was a hero...that he died for her. I mean, how weird would that be? Hey, I died saving the World but guess what I'm back and I'm better then Angel! :nibble6:

How will she ever choose between them?!

lol, thanks. I just have too time on my hands! :p
Hopefully she wont and Bangelists and Spuffies will suffer for eternity. 😛.

But seriously I do agree with most that the reason Spike gave not to see Buffy was a pretty rubbish reason. Harm was dead right, as I said before that she wouldn't care about any grand exit, she'd just be happy enough to see him.

Despite Spike to his credit does get a moment of insight and I find that even more valuable than a Spuffy reunion. The reason he's insecure is because for the majority of their relationship she simply used while all the time, he loved her. This parallels how he treated Harmony.

Is this enough of a reason not to see Buffy? It depends how scared he is. I find it believable that after everything they've been through that he feared it doesn't mean as much to Buffy as it did to him. In fact we know this more or less for fact.

Exhibit A: "No you don't but thanks for saying it"

Exhibit B: Him not going to see Buffy after becoming corporeal.

Exhibit C: "I know I never had a shot with her..."

I actually think that considering members of an internet forum at least have enough time their hands to discuss this in depth and differ over the correct course of action shows it's a complex issue and we don't have an evil law firm to run, feel threatened by Spike, nor do we have a happiness clause to contend with. It's not cut and dry and I think unless Spike expressedly said "Can someone please contact Buffy for me?", which he didn't but easily could have done, then I'm afraid the issue remains with Spike and Spike alone.

Or let us look at it another way. If Buffy now found out that Spike was alive and no one told her, who do you think she'd more mad at? I'd wager Spike. I doubt she'd shout at Angel for not telling her right at the beginning because at the end of the day we are captains of our own fate and Spike even displayed if he has enough will, even as a ghost he can affect the the world, something to think about...

I was reading all of your posts and everybody has such great argument. But the whole time I was reading it, I was just asking myself one thing. If Angel was in Spike's place, and Spike n Angel's.. would Spike told her Angel is back? When Spike saw Riley with that sucking vamp slut he told Buffy because he thought that was plus for him, he wasn't worried about Riley. He was selfish.

Would Spike tell Buffy is Angel was back? We'll never know, will we? Might as well give Spike the benefit of the doubt and say yes, he would.

First of all I'm not going to compare soulled Angel to soulless Spike, it's not fair.

The situations are totally different as I see it and yes Spike was being selfish, he also attempted (and successfully) to add to the already increasing doubts in Riley's mind about his relationship with Buffy.

As for soulled Spike? I don't know. He expressedly said he wouldn't let Buffy end up with Angel if he could help it, but we cannot tell what would have happened, but yeah I still believe it's a little harsh on Angel to expect him to try and contact Buffy about Spike when a) he's got a lot to do with including seeing his old rival
and b) it may not even be Angel's place to do so as Spike never actually said he wanted any to contact her.

I agree with this to an extent. Angel acts like he dismisses Spuffy as trivial and fleeting, but he could, like he said, smell Spike all over her. That disturbed him. He knows Spike is in "her heart" and that they were very, very close for a time - closer then he was with Buffy at that point. Angel was jealous, and rightly so.

I just re-watched 'Destiny' last night, and that look on Angel's face - the pure hatred, really - after he tells Spike Buffy never really loved him and Spike smartly retorts back with something like "You mean all those times I was putting in her she was thinking of you?"

Angel is so angry! He's resentful of Spike because he could give Buffy something he couldn't - physical love.

Also, Spike and Buffy were friends, something Angel and Buffy never were and never will be.

One, way to go for Spike to use such a pleasant phrase in reference to the woman he 'loves' in order to one up on someone, I'm sure Buffy would be thrilled to hear that 😉

And two, I absolutely one hundred percent disagree with your statement that Buffy and Angel never were, or never would be, friends. I've said before that are most definitely friends, I'd say from at least 'Forever' onwards, if not before.

Their interaction in 'Chosen' shows exactly how they have matured and become friends. I think its a great discredit to both characters to suggest that they aren't or never will be friends as to me, this is exactly what is presented between the scenes on and off screen we see in season five after.

I'd also suggest that way in which Angel deals with Buffy's death demonstrates that they were more than lovers, they were very much, friends.

And re: the karma comment to PB, Joan, as we'll never know there's just as much reason NOT to give Spike the benefit of the doubt and say he wouldn't, as there is to say he would 😉

Well, my belief that Buffy and Angel will never be friends is admittedly based on my own personal beliefs. I truly believe that two people who are that much in love with each other (and might always be, as much as I hate to admit it) can never really be "true" friends. That's just my opinion.

That's interesting. Going on the same footing mine could be related to my own personal feelings.

Me and my boyfriend are very much in love but we're also best friends and not just in the way a boyfriend and girlfriend are/can be. We genuinely are 'mates', always have been, so I guess mine could link back to that but its more subconscious I think.

And also does that not become problematic with Spike and Buffy for you? If you can say they were friends, but also in love? And I'm not saying that to be argumentative, it's a genuine curiosity. 🙂

For me, Spuffy is different because he was not her first love. I do not think you can be friends with your first love. Like Spike says in 'Lovers Walk', "You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love till it kills you both." Its interesting that neither Buffy or Angel argues with him.

Spike and Buffy are true friends. They have been through so much together and had arrived at a place of real mutual trust and affection.

I believe Buffy loves Spike, yes. But not in the way she loves Angel. I believe her when she says she will never love anyone more than him. Spike introduced her, in my opinion, to a different kind of love. Sure, it was sort of backwards, but in the end, they arrived at the right place, you know?

And I think I've said this before, but I believe Buffy was denial about her love for Spike until it was too late. I don't think she thought she was lying when she told him "I can't love you." She truly, at that point, believed that. In Buffy's moral universe, it was highly problimatic for her to love a soulless vampire. Spike died right after she told him she loved with him for the first time.

How will we never know if they can then be "in love" and friends? What I'm saying is that we don't know how that situation would play out.
