Should the Oldest recorded symbol be treated with fear and hatred because of misuse?

Yikes! Well, I've stated my points, so I'm really going to stay out of this... but I just have two comments.

1. Everyone, please remember that you should be debating in a civilized manner. Please don't add negative karma/positive karma without a justifiable argument. Also, please remember that you must accept all opinions at face value, and readjust your thinking according to all opinions.

2. While I like the idea that history should be changed to represent the accurate facts, it is near impossible. Even if every textbook company changed their meaning, the fact remains that schools are still using old textbooks. Schools do not readily purchase new textbooks when new information is published. If they did, they would be buying textbooks every day. Therefore, by the time the schools got around to purchasing the new books with the newer updated information, the world will have moved onto bigger issues.
 
You are free to agree/disagree with posts - but leaving attacking comments will not be tolerated. I don't want to have to disable the feature, but I will.


TC - why should it matter whether the kid is white or Indian? Shouldn't the same response be taken no matter who the action comes from? Otherwise you're just profiling students, and that's a slippery slope.

Let's face it, the kid wasn't expelled, he wasn't suspended. He had to leave a class.

If people are abusing the karma system since it has become not visible in public then it should be suspended IMO

From a Brit POV (and I may be guilty of stereotyping here but I suspect not), I sincerely doubt that a kid from an Indian/Pakistani background could ever be accused of being a neo-nazi - they are almost always the victims of those less-enlightened members of our society.

You are right, of course. I was just trying to put it into context.

I feel that we are falling into a trap of being patronising Westerners here...to associate the swastika symbol just with Nazi Germany is wrong, as it was clearly used by Eastern civilisations when our ancestors were still painting their faces with woad and working out how to attach their newly forged bronze arrowheads to sticks...but it is understandable, given our relatively recent exposure to the symbol via its misappropriation during the Nazi era.

I found it helpful to step back from an obviously emotive discussion and read this...
I also did not know about the native American or Chinese use of the symbol.

as a negative rep to my earlier post several minutes after I had subsequently agreed with Buffy Summers that she was right and there should be no double standards...hmm...sorry to go OT here but I'm very much in favour of open debate rather than the invisibility cloak approach...
 
I'm sorry but who here reads the topics from bottom to top? I suppose if I did read them from bottom to top I would have seen your change of view but as it's quite of character on a messageboard to read the last comments first...it wasn't quite possible. Please realize that simply because one disagrees with you does not mean they have an ax to grind. (except in cases where people search out old post to disagree upon) . I disagreed with the double standard and I stated so. Its not possible to rep someone twice so immediately so once I saw you subside there was no way to take the rep back. Very simple but sure lets go OT with paranoia.

Edit/feel free to log into your admin pannel and look at my reps before and after they were visible. I stated my opinion just as much then as I do now.
 
I'm just gonna go ahead and close this now. If anyone actually wants to discuss the original topic of this thread, feel free to start a new one to do so.
