When Principle Woods was attacking Spike, was you hoping he'd kill him.
Or did you, like me hope that Spike kicked his ass.
I got so excited when i saw the outcome(i wont say in case some people have not seen it yet)and felt spike was in some way right.
Your views on this subject?

I wanted Spike to, but mostly because I love him 🙂
Spike had been around for such a long time and had had many storys and fights with the scoobies. We had seen lots of backstory on him too, some which have made us feel sympathy for him. Spike was an important character who many of us became attatched too. I for one, was rooting for Spike and Buffy, and that was not really going to happen if he died. What Spike did was wrong, but by this point he had changed alot. That would not bring Nikki back but I think that him fighting with the scoobies means something. I didn't want him to beat up Woods, but I wanted Woods to forgive him or at least not kill him!

In other words, no way would I ever want Woods to kill Spike because Spike was a character made of awesomeness. But I also did not want him to hurt Woods.

Awesome scene. Obviously, Wood cannot succeed in killing Spike. No one would have liked that, but I still feel very sympathetic towards Wood in this episode. Even if Spike is one of the main characters, and a beloved one at that, you can understand why Wood would want him dead. Who wouldn't feel that way knowing someone had killed your mother?

Wood, because honestly I just loathed Spike. But I'm pretty much the only one on earth who dislikes him so it was obvious to me who would win the fight.

No, there's 2 of us! You are not alone!
Wood was obviously obsessed with the idea of avenging his mother's death (Maybe that made him the Black Avenger, but I digress...) which is understandable, even if, as Buffy pointed out, he was seeking vengeance on someone who isn't even there anymore, at least metaphorically speaking. I would have been more sympathetic to him if he had been honest about the whole thing, confronting Spike at some time when they could be alone to thrash out their differences. It isn't as much his obsession that I object to as it the way he went about it, recruiting Giles to help him, as though Spike would need her protection. He should have invited Spike back to the "Thunderdome" construction site, invited Buffy and all the Potentials along, and let Andrew serve popcorn and soft drinks. Spike wasn't ever in any real danger, except for his flashbacks, and the girls could have used a little entertainment and a good laugh or two. I mean, really, now, a normal human, armed with nothing more lethal than a few strips of metal on his hands, against someone who had killed two Slayers and was a fair match for a third? Buffy was supposed to be seriously worried about that? The only reason that she ran back to Wood's garage was to try and stop Spike from twisting his head off. It would have been poor for the morale of the group. I never bothered to root for Spike, because I was too busy laughing at Wood's antics.

1. Wood wasn't a normal human, he could easily take most vampires, similar to Gunn.
2. Wood could have killed Spike if he wasn't so obsessed with giving him a beating.

I'm going to agree with skooks on this one, to an extent anyway. When I was watching this episode, Spike still hadn't really made much of an impression on me; to like him the way most do anyway. However, I can understand where Wood is coming from but I'd never want him to kill Spike, just beat him around a little to blow off some 20+ years old steam and be done with it.

It was a weird fight to watch, cos I wasn't rooting for one character, and I sort of wanted Wood to have his vengeance but not for Spike to die, obviously. 😛

I agree with most of you here.I mean Spike did kill his mother.
But as whiteAvenger said, that person didn't exist anymore.
But to Woods, all he saw was a chance to exact revenge(and lets face it,who wouldn't want revenge)on the thing that killed his mother.
Spike was right when he said,"You didn't sign up for it,and suddenly its my fault?Your mother was a slayer,i was a vampire, its how the game is played"
He didn't know any different.
The only reason why i wanted Spike to win is because he'd shown his courage, many a time, and Woods was thinking he was gonna beat him easily.
Coolest line,"So,that what you bring me here for,to kill me?
"Oh,i dont want to kill you Spike................I want to kill the monster who killed my mother".
Woods.......you failed!

I love this scene the way it goes from the fight to flashbacks and the like... and Spike, of course, psychoanalyzing Wood. Not only was it very moving and epic, but the idea is kind of funny.
So yeah, I was rooting for Spike. It's a clear case of wanting to hurt a different person (sort of). And I loved how Spike ended it because it was, I think, the first real test of his soul and it showed that you can be good and soul-y without being angsty and all about The Good Fight *cough cough... Angel* I think it was very realistic but also very sweet.

Obviously, I feel Wood was in the wrong. He was operating out of a need for personal revenge on a person that didnt exist anymore. William the Bloody died when Spike received his soul. Like Buffy said, at that point, she didnt have time for vendettas. There were more pressing matters at hand. Despite, I do understand where Wood was coming from. Spike killed his mother. I understand his desire for "justice" (isn't that what called it?)

Yet, Wood should know better than to try to take away Spike's "get out of jail" free card. Because, in a heartbeat, if the going got tough, Buffy would choose Spike over Wood anyday.

Not to do with the characters as much, but I would have found it real interesting if Wood had succeeded in killing Spike to see what the hell would have happened after it all. It was obvious Spike wouldn't be killed at that point, but I liked to think of how the storyline would have played out during the rest of the season without Spike. Just something that interested me.

Angel would have stayed and been burned up, Spike would still have reappeared the next season, but it would be Season 1 of "Spike." Then, later, Angel would pop back up as a little puppet man, but it would have been a permanent condition.
I was rooting for Spike. So he killed Wood's mom, big deal. It's not like it was souled Spike. Get over it. I understand where he is coming from trying to kill 'the monster' but Spike did prove to be useful after all.

I agree. There's NO WAY Spike was going to die like that. He needed a much grander death! Plus, would Buffy have found the strength to fight back The First without Spike? I say no.

I was rooting Wood because Spike killed his mom. But I didn't want one of them to die. It was a heartbreaking moment when Spike told him how 'not important' Wood was to his mother. *hugs Wood* By the way, Spike shouldn't have bit him. He's already lost the fight so why the biting?

that's pretty much where I stand on this as well.

I wasn't rooting for anyone in this fight, but it was a great fight though. I dont think its weird that Wood thought he could take Spike though, even being human, he showed he could kick a vampires ass, he just underestimated Spike. I cant blame Wood wanting revenge either, its easy to say 'he should get over it' but it wouldnt be that easy to just 'get over it and forgive him'.

Q-tip agrees: 1. Wood wasn't a normal human, he could easily take most vampires, similar to Gunn.
2. Wood could have killed Spike if he wasn't so obsessed with giving him a beating.

I never really saw Wood as that formidable an opponent. Sure, he managed to kill a couple of vampires in an alley once, and he said that he "wasn't very popular" with vampires in general, but other than that single time, every time he fought either Bringers or vampires, somebody had to save him. Even by his own admission, Wood was "totally out of his league" in fighting alongside Buffy and her team. My guess would be that Wood had managed to stake a few fledgelings, or maybe gotten a more mature vampire or two either from ambush or from a distance with a regular bow (Robin Wood/Robin Hood. Surely I'm not the only one to make the connection) or a crossbow. The bottom line here is that, for the first time, Wood went up against a Master vampire, a fighter so formidable that he managed to kill two slayers in one-on-one combat, and one of them when he was barely more than a fledgling.

There was never any contest. Robin Wood bit off far more than he could chew. The only reason that he lasted as long as he did was because Spike was distracted by visions of his mother.

I agree Spike is 10x the fighter Wood is, i just meant given the circumstances Wood had a slight opportunity, that he missed, to stake Spike. Glad he didn't though, as Spikes my fave character :)
I agree Wood was way out his depth here. I think he got too cocky, the fact he killed some random vampires(possibly over the years) made him think he could take Spike, added to the sheer hatred he felt. But during the fight, before Spike came around, there was moments that Spike was out of it in a daze and Wood could have staked him. So Wood could've killed him but in a fair fight, no way.

Yeah, agree. He was wasting time to get his mother's cloak back.

Granted, there were opportunities missed. If Wood had chosen a better method, i,e, an ambush, he might have been successful. As it was, he had to gloat. Always a bad thing to do in that sort of situation.
Certainly, Wood screwed up, simply by wanting to have the satisfaction of beating Spike down the same way that Spike did his mother, and therein laid the major error in his plan. Dawn was much smarter when she threatened to incinerate Spike in his bed while he slept. If Wood had chosen that sort of strategy, his chances of success would have been much greater. Then again, he would have destroyed his mother's coat, the retrieval of which seemed to be a major priority with him.

Another question arises, though. If he HAD been successful, how long would he have survived before Buffy dismembered him slowly? (And she was a good enough fighter to have been able to not only gloat, but also quip, pun, spit, and snarl while she did it without having to worry about any surprises from Wood)
