I thought that Spike should have stopped wearing the coat. But then he stopped wearing it after he tried to rape Buffy and didn't start wearing it again until the 15th episode of the season when she said that he needed to integrate Spike and William. He needed the coat as a way to channel that old love of violence and cocky confidence. He didn't know Nikki was Robin's mother until the 17th episode and after that he probably didn't stop wearing it because Robin tried to fully bring out his demon (it was very hard for Spike to get a soul only to be forced to kill because of the trigger) and try to murder him.
