Spike's "attempted rape" of Buffy in Seeing Red

The thing in this discussion that people seem to miss is that it's one thing to say that what Spike did wasn't wrong, and a totally different thing to say that it wasn't really his fault.
It was wrong, duh, trying to rape someone can obviously never be anything but wrong. But question isn't if it was (attempted) rape to Buffy, it was, and it was horrible etc. But the thing that makes it complicated is that Spike didn't have a soul, even though he's much mor of a nice guy in these seasons, he is still a demon (at least partly), he does not have a soul. And even though he might be able to understand that what he did was wrong, he also understands that he can't really prevent himself from doing things like that, because he doesn't really know where he crosses the line etc., he doesn't think like humans though.. cause obviously he's not human.

(And yes I am bad at explaining things, what I mean etc., I know that.)

I think you did a great job!!! Well said.
Spike is soulless so cant be held responsible and it basically isnt a rape??? Where were you brought up>??? lol

Of course it was an attempted rape.... at the end of the day, Buffy TVS been gifted at telling stories of human emotion and experience through demons and vampires etc. What Spike did to Buffy wasn a matter of him being a vamp and what that might literally mean in the Buffyverse... he tried to rape her.... he was losing his mind and the way it was filmed etc made it so horribly uncomfortable and Buffy was so helpless against him. Spikewas losing it and it was a waypoint for him in seeing that thinkgs had to change, as the hurt they were inflicting on each other was getting greater and greater

Its also bizarre how some people have posted things like 'she wasnt actually raped'..... How can one be better than the other.... they're both terrible crimes to commit against someone... regardless of whether the act was actually carried out or not

Sorry what? Well not in Sunnydale with vampire with or without souls.. Thing is that even though rape is a super terrible crime, and there's no doubt Spike was trying to rape Buffy (which was wrong, yes indeed it was).. SPike also killed people, drained their blood, made very very terrible things. He didn't have a soul, he was a vampire! Sure he was kind of nice sometimes, mostly 'cause he wanted Buffy, but his brain didn't work like ours does cause he had no conscience, he had no real sense of right and wrong....

Well, I'm sure it was quite a difference for Buffy. Being almost raped and actually being raped. Of course there is a different. Doesn't make what Spike did less wrong, but there is definitely a difference.

Of course there is a difference.... what I was trying to illustrate is that the situation is just as horrific whether she was raped or not.

Well in fairness then you failed to do so.
The point is people in this thread have called what Spike did 'Rape' when he never actually did.
Giving it the correct terminology does not detract from the horror of what he actually did, but it is different to the charge posted at his door.

Spike went too far ,he was governed by his feelings for Buffy,Spike then tried to force Buffy to have sex with him...he thought that she didn't mean what she said when she rebuffed him he thought it was hoping to be like before weaken and have sex with him.But Buffy made her feelings very clear it was just that Spike wasn't listening to her.So how was Buffy partly responsible for it..? was she giving him the wrong impression..?

Yes, she had done it countless times before. She had said no and meant it, but then changed her mond. For Spike, an evil entity, she had shown him that barriers she placed were constantly altered to suit her.
Not once do i condone what Spike did, but i do say Buffy forced him to believe this was an ok course of action because she had done it herself.
Buffy had defined how this relationship was to take place, she had set the 'rules', Spike should not have taken it as far as he did, but Buffy must shoulder some responsibilty for taking, what is essentially an Evil Demon into this relationship. He has no moral compass, he has no soul, yet she allowed him this access.

You can't train your dog to piss on the couch then be mad when he does it.

Thanks that explains it

LMAO!

ooh AL you do make me laugh.....it sounds like one of my mums dogs...!(she no longer owns her now)

I don't know why people make such a big deal about this. Spike's "attempted sex act" wasn't THAT big of a deal to Buffy. You play with fire, you get burned. Buffy knew what Spike was.

In fact, she brought it onto herself. Typical bitch, she ****s with him for months, then when it bit her on the ass she expects sympathy... Motherless c**t.

Spike has to be judged as doing a wrong action even if he was acting on instinct. As Darla tells us once you have a soul you regain your choice, which means Spike made the choice to try and rape Buffy, and he knew it was a wrong thing to do, whereas a vampire would see no such distinction.

Like i just read in another thread "evil is knowing better, but doing worse"

I can't believe the language some people use on this board! Why can't people just disagree and learn how to debate intelligently without swearing and calling people insulting names? If anything that just weakens the strength of your point and makes people less likely to listen to and acknowledge your point.

It doesn't MATTER if Spike was human or a vampire. He KNEW what he was doing which is why he looked so shocked that he could do it, but the fact remains that he still COULD do it. And attempted rape is just as disgusting and serious as rape, the only difference being that Buffy managed to kick him off before he got his penis inside her. He was still holding her down violently as she tried to struggle free, which as I know from experience of this happening to me is absolutely terrifying.

All you can think about is getting free, surviving what is happening to you and getting through this moment, then the next, then the next. It doesn't matter if you are a 7 stone weakling or as tough as a vampire slayer, you feel that your body is being violated and used without permission. It doesn't MATTER if you have previously slept with the person, OR vampire. If you have said the word no and they are hurting you anyway that is breaking the law. Spike should have been made to pay for what he did, but I think Buffy only let him go because she was embarrassed and horrified by what had just happened and worried about involving the police and her family, which is why many rapes and assualts go unreported.

I honestly don't think some people actually realise just how serious both attempted rape and rape actually are and that is what annoys me. Talk to people who have been raped and sexually assaulted and you will hear some horrific stories and realise it could just as easily happen to you. It can happen to ANYONE unfortunately, that is the world we live in, but the one universal truth is that NO-ONE deserves something as hideous as this to happen to them.

People have been murdered after being raped. That could have happened to Buffy too. Would she have deserved that? And it is not just women who have been raped, men can be raped too, which I think men here are failing to acknowledge. It is just as serious a crime whoever it happens to. I just genuinly don't understand how people can be so nonchalant about rape. It is not a game, it is one of the worst crimes known to man. And how do you know Buffy wasn't bothered by it? Of course she was, she was visibly shaken in the next couple of scenes, but being the Slayer, she had to try and concentrate on what she needed to do in Slayer-land. She probably was terrified.

My Dear Lord, can you get over yourself, you aren't the only person to be in a similar situation, and i know 100% you aren't the only person who has been raped and/or the brunt of an attempt within this very conversation.
No one here is defending Spike as a rapist, no one here is defending the actions of a rapist, but you need to understand that in this one case BUFFY had some role to play in encouraging this behaviour.

Not one person here has said that Buffy deserved it, what they are saying is the reason she didn't come down so hard on him was because she understood that she was part of the reason he was there.
There is only one thing worse then someone who acts nochalantly about rape, its someone who has been raped and treats every single situation exactly the same.
But if you (can) read this entire conversation, you will see, even with glib remarks people have taken it seriously.
So what if people have different attitudes towards something, big deal, i've seen people talk about Abortion as though its the best thing they could do, when it is one of those 'worst crimes of man' thing.

IF we were talking about Xander attempting to rape Buffy then we have a different conversation, but re-watch Buffy season 6, watch how she treats Spike, makes him do things he doesnt want to do, she forces him to do these things just as much, the difference is, in this case its a woman.

Seriously, sorry about whatever happened to you but jeez, get of your high horse and respect that others have a different opinion based on what THEY have experienced.

I don't agree with everything you said, but thanks for explaining so I didn't have to do it.. again...
Wow, this is intresting and I have to say that i agree with you. Spike was souless and the only thing that he had to control him was the chip in his head. We can't hold him responsible for that because he was technically evil. Does anyone blame Angel for everything he did as Angelus? Or Cordy for her actions in season 4 of Angel? I don't because they were not in control of what they were doing. It was all the demon that was inside them. In Spike and Angel's case, the vampire and in Cordy's case, Jasmine.
wow i couldnt have said it any better!

Boohoo?

Yes, rape, or attempted rape is a terrible thing..blah blah.

But in the context of the Spuffy relationship, it actually makes a sense that it led to this. Their relationship is borne from violence and anger, it's not like suddenly one day Spike decided he'd show Buffy who is boss, without anything to actually lead to that point. The attempted rape lasted two minutes, Buffy took her hatred and self loathing out on Spike for months. Frankly, anyone that suggests the blame lies entirely at Spikes feet, is an idiot.

As for being nonchalant about the issue of rape...If I was to worry about all the bad things that have happened or could happen to me, or has happened or could happen to the people I love, I'd become one crazy little bunny.

The past can only hurt you if you let it.

"Showing her who's boss" is exactly what creeps me out, even, say, suggesting it. Rape is a crime of forcing somebody into sexual activity, in particular sexual penetration, against his or her will through use of physical force, threat of injury, or other duress. Duress is 'threat' in here (Spike-Buffy). Did Spike threat her? Yes. He threatened her to tell her friends how she felt when they brought her back to life if they don't continue to bed each other. Thus resulted in the continuation of their relation. So, basically, everything happened after this threat is rape. Because it was all a forced consent. 'Forced' is the key world here. If anyone had missed. Not 'played with fire', not 'deserved'. Forced.

That is the single most ludicrous comment regarding the events of season 6 i have ever read.
Watch it again.
Buffy cheses Spike, Buffy knew of his emotional state and abused that, manipulated it to gain everything she wanted. She even acknowledges this, watch all the way again.
But like Spike points out, he has heard this tune before, and she always comes back.
Buffy was at times no better then Spike for what she did, the only difference is, Spike has no soul, no moral/ethical compass, Buffy is just doing it because she wants to feel something, anything even if it is hate and disgust with herself.
Buffy Summers is the one who should be charged with 'Rape' in all this, she forced the entire situation except she mentally raped and abused Spike.
She 'forced' him to do things he was not sure he wanted to do. She told him, at his heart an evil demon, that it was ok to do these things, that its fine to take advantage of her.

As someone regularly guilty of projecting herself into situations that are not involving me, I have to say there is a lot of projection going on here. Please try to remember that by conceding that buffy may have played a role in what happened to her, does NOT mean that what happened to you is your fault. No matter how similar your situation is to the one that is being discussed, unless there was a vampire and a slayer involved, this is not you. What happened to you (I am using this in the collective, not directing it at anyone) is Not your fault. Nothing said here changes that. Sharing your story is part of the healing process and so very important, but this is not about your story. This is not about my story.

So, today, based on the incidents that occured in the show, I think that it is logical to say that both parties commited some offense, although both are not accountable. Buffy messed with Spikes head and used him for her pleasure, that was wrong-if she had done this to a rationally driven MAN, then this next bit would be different, but spike was not a MAN. Because of that, the laws of man do not apply to him. He acted as he saw fit. It was bad, what he did. Attempting to rape someone is bad, but unless we are going to argue that Angel is to be held responsible for the murders (cause rape and murder are both bad right?) Committed by Angelus, then I don't see why we are trying to hold Spike responsible.

I think both Buffy and Spike were both responsible for what happened.
The game Buffy was playing with Spike's head went out of control.

Okay. I wasn't about to bother to add anything else TO this thread, because I had said what I believed, and was happy with it. Which is
(well, on all the other boards I belong to anyway) the whole POINT of a discussion board, but there is no way I am going to let some complete stranger treat me like that.

I have been around on other boards for many years and have only recently joined this one, thinking it might be interesting to discuss and DEBATE intelligently over Buffy, however I am now seriously questioning my decision. This is a prime example of why.

I Administrate my own board as well as modding on another one and if this were my board and you spoke to me OR more importantly, one of my members like that, I would be asking WHY you cannot stick with the subject at hand and how dare you, HOW DARE YOU tell a person, ANY person who has suffered ANY form of sexual assault, attack or rape to "get over themselves?" I have a feeling you are a man, because no woman would say something as insensitive as that.

The reason I mentioned that fact was because I was EXPLAINING the fact, that IF you have been in that situation, which I KNOW not everybody has, and NEVER SAID everybody has or that I was the only person! I KNOW that other people on this thread, (from reading their comments, which I have done though I wonder whether YOU have) have felt just as annoyed about this subject as me and have also been victims/attempted victimes of this crime. Seriously! Someone tell me! WHERE exactly in this thread do I say "oh dear me. Pooor me, I am the only person to have ever been raped...?" I didn't and I don't. So don't make up lies about me.

(Which you would know if you had bothered to actually READ my post properly before launching that personal attack on me, which makes me wonder more what kind of board this is if people just can't stick to the subject at hand without getting personal about it.)

Why are you so adamant on changing my point of view and unaccepting of the fact that my view is my view and I will not change it, just because you say so? You can attack me personally all you like but it only shows how unaccepting you sadly seem to be of anyone who doesn't understand or share your viewpoint? Is this one of those places where, if everyone doesn't agree 100% people turn on them and attack them until they do?

Because that's what that paragraph is to me. A personal verbal outright attack for absolutely no reason other than the fact that I believe Spike attempted to rape Buffy. I mean Jeez!
It's a t.v programme!! Is it really worth being THAT insulting about and getting THAT wound up over?

And by the way if anyone needs to "get over themselves" it certainly isn't me. I am quite happy with who I am, thank you very much and don't feel I need to go around putting down complete strangers just because I don't agree with every thing they ever say. And I CERTAINLY don't need my self-esteem validated by strangers.

"No one here is defending Spike as a rapist, no one here is defending the actions of a rapist, but you need to understand that in this one case BUFFY had some role to play in encouraging this behaviour."

Why do I "Need" to understand that exactly, especially when I disagree? Why can't you accept the fact that I don't agree with your opinion? I have watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and that particular episode probably as many times as you have and all I see is an attempted rape. Buffy asks Spike to leave and says she doesn't want him there. If he doesn't understand that it is his problem, not hers.

No, she shouldn't have slept with him earlier maybe, but she recognised that and finished with him. The fact he was not only attempting to rape her, but also following her after she broke it off with him and making a "Buffy-Bot" doll of her shows he was obsessive and was beyond the point of listening to reason. He was determined to get her to love him once more no matter what it took when she had made it clear that is not what she wanted. That does not make her the one who has "encouraged" the behaviour in anyway. She said no! No is no!

"Not one person here has said that Buffy deserved it, what they are saying is the reason she didn't come down so hard on him was because she understood that she was part of the reason he was there."

Actually there ARE people here who have said that Buffy deserved it, if you had bothered to read the thread (before you accuse ME of not doing so!) One of them was just before I posted this post, will go back and quote them all if neccessary.

"There is only one thing worse then someone who acts nochalantly about rape, its someone who has been raped and treats every single situation exactly the same."

How long have you known me? How many people who have been raped have you known? How can you just generalise like that and assume someone who has been raped will treat every situation exactly the same? Have you ever spoken to me outside of this thread? On any other boards? In real life? No? Therefore, what kind of arrogance is that to assume you know that I have, or would treat ANY situation the same?
That is, quite frankly, the most immature and contradictory judgement I have ever heard in my life. What are you, 5?

"But if you (can) read this entire conversation, you will see, even with glib remarks people have taken it seriously."

That is because rape is a serious issue, which you might realise if you bothered to learn about it, did some research into it, talked to people who had been raped, etc, as well as those who haven't but whose families have been affected by it, and I know MANY. I have several friends who have also been through this terrible ordeal, therefore I was speaking not only for myself, but also on their behalf, as well as on behalf of those who want to say something but get afraid because of arrogant reactions like this. So don't assume to know who I am or what I am thinking and especially throw lies at me that I never even said.

"So what if people have different attitudes towards something, big deal, i've seen people talk about Abortion as though its the best thing they could do, when it is one of those 'worst crimes of man' thing."

I know people have different attitudes. I'm not the one who seems to have a problem with that am I? You're the one who can't accept the fact that I disagree with you, so therefore. whole last paragaraph is a contradiction in itself. I was merely discussing my point on a discussion board. Not trying to change anyone's views, but it seems many people are trying to change mine and those are the people I am speaking to.

"Seriously, sorry about whatever happened to you but jeez, get of your high horse and respect that others have a different opinion based on what THEY have experienced.
"

I think you need to take your own "advice" and learn about how to respect opinions that differ FROM yours before you go labelling people you don't even know.

Maddy you don't know him either and your accusations are awfully presumptuous. I suggest you chill out. you are projecting. My initial reaction to this thread was similar to yours, but you have to take youself out of this. You made your point now walk away.
