Sorry for double post --- but I can't not post it here -- Buffy and Spike win the Internetz! 🙂 They make it to top ten in SFX poll.

Captain Mal Reynolds, star of cult TV series Firefly, unexpectedly beat The Doctor to top spot in a poll for sci-fi authority SFX.co.uk, which asked the public to vote for their favourite sci-fi hero.

More than 10,000 people took part and TV heroes, not film stars, emphatically came out on top.

Small screen stars including Torchwood's enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness at number three, dominate the list. While Hollywood's summer box office bankers Captain America, Green Lantern and Transformers' Optimus Prime only just scrape into the top 100.

Iconic vampire slayer Buffy is the highest-ranked woman at number four, beating the likes of Amy Pond (Doctor Who), Hermione Granger (Harry Potter) and The X-Files' Dana Scully.

Surprise omissions from the top 10 include Spider-Man (at 12), Darth Vader (13), Captain Kirk (17) and Batman (19).

Seven Doctor Who characters "“ and five from Harry Potter "“ make the top 100. Star Trek also gets five spots on the list, but Star Wars only two.

"Few people would have bet against Doctor Who topping this poll, but the surprise win for Mal Reynolds shows how much love there still is for Firefly," says SFX Editor-in-Chief Dave Bradley. "Putting the top 100 icons to the vote really caught people's imagination "“ sci-fi is more popular than ever before."

Yay! It just futher proves my point how great the 2 of them are together! Right next to each other where they belong😛
 
How did Ianto beat out Harry Potter? I don't do Harry Potter... but huh?! How was Ianto a hero? Who did he save? And if someone answers Jack, I will bite their heads off.

Overall, I'm SO pleased with this list. I mean Mal, The Doctor, Jack, Buffy, Spike... AWESOME top 5!

And I more than love that they're beside each other on the list.
 
I just watched After Life, and I love the look those two give each other when Buffy walks down the stairs. 😱

Ah I love this bit of the story. Though I thought they didn't see each other again until After Life. . .

Anyway this scene is what made me a complete Spuffy fan. I haven't been able to go back ever since then. I always always like the idea of them, before they happened, but this moment, is what made me love them.

He's so concerned about her, and her hands and everything too. And he counted the days?

I die of the cute.

I know, everything about this scene is simply amazing. It's one of my favourite Spuffy scenes. 🙂

And woops! I meant After Life, got confused. 😛

Yeah, I love that!

So, I'm on season 6 (just watched tabula rosa) on my re-watch... and I'm trying to see their dynamic through a different lens... because I tend to get so frustrated with buffy's continual denial of her feelings...

I really think it's the soul thing... for whatever reason buffy thinks that because he doesn't have one that he can't be "human"...or that he really is a monster. and yet, she's drawn to him so she fights it.

we'll see how this goes.

Yeah, the soul thing is a huge deal for her. Sometimes Buffy has a really hard time seeing the gray areas between black and white.

I think a lot of it has to to with Angel/Angelus. It's pretty much a lesson that was taught to her in the most painful way imaginable. Good vamp versus bad vamp being totally dependant on the soul.

And since it was something she learned relatively young she really clings to it. Even when it's kind of proven wrong by Spike over and over again.

It frustrates me as well.

Ahh I love that scene! There's also the part where he's about to bandage her hands and he's holding them and they sorta look up at each other at the same time. Watch for it. It's the best moment, IMO. 😀

Oh yes. That bit is lovely!!!!

I really like too how you see him pull himself together. If it were up to him he's just be staring like that for hours but since she's hurt he pulls himself together to take care of her.

Really feel for him in that moment.

That part is so adorable too. 🙂 I love their relationship when Buffy comes back. She tells him her secret about being in Heaven and trusts him not to tell. She seemed happy to see him. 😱
 
That scene in Afterlife is what made me completely fall in love with Spuffy. It's just so perfect. He understands the pain and loves her and she feels connected to him and him alone. Love it. 🙂
 
The staircase metaphor is very important for Spuffy.

In The Gift, we see Buffy walking up the steps away from Spike; she pauses at the top of the stairs to listen to him say "I know you'll never love me but you treat me like a man and that's...". In that scene it's clear Buffy is "above" Spike, out of his reach.

In Afterlife, Buffy walks down the stairs, to Spike's level, which of course is the beginning of their problems because eventually Spike will lose his way his redemption path. And of course Buffy and Spike fall into the basement when they have sex.

But the great moments of "descending" and "ascending" happens in Chosen, where Buffy goes down to be with Spike in the basement. Eventually they will both end up in the basement of the high school and both "ascend" in their own important ways.

Ironically, Buffy will tell Spike she loves him and he won't believe it.

The Spuffy story is so incredibly rich: it mixes great eroticism with deep emotion and complex metaphor.

Your wisdom is just amazing 🙂 I never noticed the staircase! It is definitely very interesting to think about. The whole idea of getting what you deserve or having what you don't deserve is definitely apparent. Then there is the whole want vs. need vs. deserve.

I am slowly rewatching Buffy with my sister (who has never seen it). I may have to surpass her because we are still halfway through season 3 and I am having major Spike withdrawals.

Gaaah! I know how you feel. When I first watched S3, I saw there was a disc with Spike's face on it, so I expected lots of Spike. And then the season ended with only ONE Spike-filled episode, and I like hyperventilated.

That always makes me laugh. Spike is so awesome that he gets his own disc over a series regular on a season he's barely even in.

I knowwww! I kinda spazzed seeing his face on a disk, and I got all excited only to realize that he is in one episode. My sister thinks I am crazy. I am majorly considering watching while she is out of the house. She will neverrrrr know.
