Stranger Things

This is a great article but things like this:

really wind me up. That's what acting is - pretending. 🙄 You can pretend to be someone's mother without actually being a mother. Why is it that women who aren't mothers get hounded about stuff like this and not men who aren't fathers? Such double standards in the industry! 😡 Anyway, I digress....

I've loved Winona since I was a kid, and my love for her will never die, whether she has kids or not. I think she was great as Joyce Byers.

In this case I'm not sure its actually a gender thing. I think lots of male actors get type casted in roles. Often its down to a public prosection because of something that happened in their private life [like with Hugh Grant and the Hooker]. That is why some of the best actors are the ones who don't have much of their personal lives out there.

I think you misunderstood my point - there is this stigma towards female actresses who's never birthed or raised a child that they can't play a parent because they have no experience in the field, yet they don't question that actress playing a doctor when she has no medical qualifications. That's what acting is - pretending to be someone else. Why should Winona's personal situation matter if she's acting as a mother-of-two? That article highlighted she'd received criticism elsewhere in the media for that exact reason and honestly it bugs the crap out of me.

That sort of parental-based stigma doesn't apply to men. Men can portray a father regardless of their personal situation. It's totally a gender thing.

But honestly I don't want this thread to get bogged down in this, I just wanted to reiterate what I meant. 🙂

True, but I don't think its valid point anyway. I'm sure there are lots of actresses who have not given birth who still play mothers on screen. I don't think the choice is made in casting based on that sort of thing.
Eh, yeah, it'll all come out at once, like always. There's only 9 episodes.

makes sense they all come out at once as most netflix series are like diarrhea
Just got my schedule for next week. I'm off Friday. Just got class in morning. Maybe we could start the watch round 12PM/noon (Eastern)? What you all think?

I'm sorry Metda but I won't be able to join you, but I am really looking forward to season 2 🙂

awwwwwwww :( Maybe watch one with you laterz? :)
I can't rewatch during the day but I'll definitely be starting it tomorrow evening so hopefully we can all chat about it at some point 🙂

I have 2 episodes left of season 2. My thought so far:

-El is still by far the best character
-Digging the Dustin/Steve bromance
-Max is pretty cool, really hope her and El become friends in season 3
-Steve's hair is still fabulous
-Joyce is still the best mom
-The music is still awesome
-Digging daddy Hopper

I do wish the storylines connected more though, it feels like there too many things going on and with too many characters. I miss the character interactions, especially between the boys+Elle. I do like the additions of 8 though.

Aside from that the season has been really great so far. I think I like season 1 slightly better at the moment, but it's a strong sequel. And it feels like it's building to a bigger storyline down the road. I hope the monster sticks around, I feel like the 2 episodes left is not long enough to explain everything. Things felt better paced last season. But I'll be okay with the pacing if it's setting up season 3.

The acting is also still phenomenal, especially with the kids. I can't believe how young they all are yet they already act so well! Kids tend to be super cringy on TV, but they really casted a great bunch.

She's the BEST mum! It's about time there was a good mum on TV named Joyce!
I think I'd actually prefer a whole new set of monsters/villains next season(s).

I just started Season 2. I had forgotten how much I love the aesthetics of this show. It makes me feel like I’m in the 80’s.

Also - does anyone else always feel nostalgic for ET when they see this show?

I hear the music, see the style of the title writing, clothes and arcades and think DONT TAKE ME BACK! I am pretty sure Eleven wore my high school choir dress to the snow ball.

I thought S2 was great overall. Young Noah Schnapp (Will) really was the standout star this season - his possession scenes were phenomenal. I was genuinely very frightened when he had an episode.

E7 was a bit of a dud in a season of overall great stuff. Whilst I appreciate some backstory for Eleven, the actual street gang were just a bunch of cliches that I didn't think worked, although I would like to see Kali back in future.

I wanted to see more of the whole gang, inc Eleven, but I like how they were all split. Dustin & Steve were great, as were Lucas & Max (who didn't get to do much but hopefully she'll come into her own next season). I love the father/daughter dynamic of Hopper & Eleven. They both need each other.

And I just love Winona Ryder. LOVE HER!

Just some final thoughts

#RUNBOBRUN! (Why is it in movies a character doesn't run?!?!) I was so heartbroken when Bob died. He was a great guy.

(Oh a nerdy by note, there used to be a character in the Sims called Bob Newbie)

I was a little bit in love with Bob :-)

Noah was phenomenal, I'm glad he had more material this year, although I do feel bad for Will, give the poor kid a break!

I actually liked episode 7
Just watched season 2.
I think the show doesn't work quite as well now when there isn't so much a mystery anymore.
Loved the first couple of episodes in season 1 when we had no clue what was going on.

Now when we get to see the monsters, with somewhat crappy cgi, I'm not as intrigued anymore.

I also wish that the storylines had connected more, like Blaze said.
Eleven is a great character but her interaction with the others was missed.

Loved Max though. I hope she stays around.
Do think her half-brother was a bit over the top. It almost got silly there.

I'm complaining a bit here but overall it's still a good show.
Will absolutely watch another season.
