Yeah your right. I meant that the line would be kept by the more suitable Slayer. But I don't think that would it either. But I feel completely stupid because to solve the whole ethical debate, all the Powers would have to do is simply kill Faith.

In the current trend of spitting theories out our arses here's one for ya:

What if the "disruption" was caused in S1 (prophecy girl)?
Buffy at that point, passed the slayer line along to Kendra, who passed it on to Faith.
But then Faith went bad and was put in prison.
A slayer in prison really doesn't do the council much good, so what if they were able to mystically transfer the line to Buffy?

Don't know anything about Fray, so I apoligize if any of this doesn't correspond.

I agree with the 'Buffy is reactivated' theory. I think about it like this: Buffy had the Potiental. She was supposed to be the Chosen One before she even got called. I think that whatever power gives a Slayer her Slayerness recognized Buffy as the Potiental who would someday become the Slayer. As she was a Potiental, she got re-Chosen. It's like...whoa.

I'm tempted to say that the line runs through Faith, though, but I know that's not the case. I think it does, though. I think it runs through both of them. Because of the rigamarole we've heard eighty thousand times: Buffy died, we got Kendra, Kendra died, we got Faith. The line did run through Faith and only Faith for a while, until Buffy got resurrected. Then we have the Chosen Two.

The flatlining confuses me. I don't think there's another Slayer, because something as important as that would've been shown. It would change the entire outcome of S7. I'll believe that when I see it, let's put it that way.

So, I'm thinking that since Buffy was, for all intents and purposes, magickally resurrected again during the flatlining, she was just magickally re-re-inserted into the Slayer line. I know it sounds dumb, but it's what I've got. So then we can base the events of S7 from Buffy being The Chosen One, dying, and having the Two Slayer thing, and then dying again, and being re-inserted. Re-re-inserted. Or whatever.

nerd4hire? I love you, honey, but I have to throw in my two cents: I really don't trust what Anya or Dawn have to say about the Slayer line, because it's not like they're experts. I always took them saying things like that as being true to their Champion. Like rallying behind Buffy's ego and saying, "Yea! Go Buffy! You're the only one, the only one!" I don't think any of them know for sure. I also know that Joss wrote it, but look at whose mouths it came out of. Something that important would come out of Giles or some Higher Power, I think, if he wanted us to take it credibly.

This, again, is just my ramblings, and I'll leave everybody to their peace. Later.

Edit: Alright, I feel slow. I forgot that The First said Buffy was 'the only one, the only one' in 'Chosen'. So, forgive my ignorance. But I had another thought...

If a Slayer could die and just be re-inserted into the Slayer line, then why did we have Kendra? Why do we have Faith? Maybe it's just because Buffy had already died. Hmm. Deep thoughts.

Also Buffy wasn't really dead for more than a couple of seconds in Villains, whereas Xander and Angel took longer to find her in PG.

Still the slighest bit of physical death is just enough to activate a new Slayer. No matter if its 5 seconds or 5 months.

Hm.. Well, maybe Kendra was called when Buffy was dead (she got activated really fast or something).. But Buffy wasn't the real Chosen One when she came back to life the first time cause then we wouldn't have Faith.. There must've been something about the spell Willow used.
But I still don't think this really works since Faith never died.. Can you just take her "Chosen"-thing away from her cause Buffy was "re-born".. Buffy's resurrection shouldn't have anything to do with Faith really.

I did a quick search, just so I could see what Joss Whedon has said concerning the slayerline. Apparently pre-season 6 Joss was saying the line ran through Faith. So whatever happened, happened S-6 or later.

There was one article I couldn't find. If I can trust my memory at all I know I read it. It concerns a question and answer period at a comic book convention (I think it might have been San Diego). In the article they said Joss planned to fix the discrepancies between Chosen and Fray in the next Fray he was planning.

Here's what I did Find.

"Joss Whedon Slayer Line

Pre- Season 6

QUESTION: Joss, two questions, actually. One is in previous seasons you basically started BUFFY in real-time, letting two or three months go as the summer would and then picking up the characters after that. Are you planning to do that this season?

JOSS WHEDON: Yes.

JOSS WHEDON: It does not in fact. The line now runs through Faith.

*

QUESTION: Joss, given what you said about the Slayer line now running through Faith, does that, number one, mean Faith is coming back? And number two, does that mean that when Buffy does come back, she will no longer be a slayer?

JOSS WHEDON: What Buffy will be when she comes back you'll have to see. And no, we have no plans for Eliza to be on the show at present because she's making a bunch of movies.

At the end of Season 5, Buffy died. She was still dead into Season 6, before Willow raised her. Spike says she was dead 147 days. When one slayer dies, another takes her place (i.e., Kendra). The slayer's death does not have to be reported to anyone (example: the Council), as when Buffy died the first time and Xander gave her mouth-to-mouth to bring her back (she was only dead for a few minutes). A few episodes later - voila, Kendra. So, where was the new slayer after Buffy died at the end of Season 5? [Joss Whedon explained this one himself in an interview. He explained that when Buffy died the first time that triggered Kendra (and after Kendra died, this triggered Faith). Joss explained that the triggering ability only works once for each slayer so Buffy's second death would not call another slayer whereas Faith's death would.]

What is said about the Slayer line in Fray:

Then, in the twenty-first century there was a battle. A Slayer, possibly with some mystical allies faced an apocalyptic army of demons. And when it was done, they were all gone. All demons, all magicks, banished from this dimension. It is not known if the Slayer lived, but the demons being gone, she was the last to be called. The line did continue, there were girls with the power, but they were never called, never trained.

Message board comment by a member:

Joss stated a couple of years ago at San Diego that the Slayer line ran only through Faith..."unless we come up with a really good story for it to still run through Buffy".

Well technically Buffy died three times: Prophecy Girl, The Gift and Villains(she flatlined).

Also after Buffy's first death the slayer line shifted to Kendra and next to Faith leaving Faith the only one who could pass along the powers of the slayer.

It's quite possible that something happened to Buffy when she was resurrected in the beginning of S6 by the scoobies that allowed the slayer line to pass through her once again but it's never officially discussed.

Buffy does say in S7 that she believes a new slayer will be called upon her death...unfortunately we do not see if this ever occurred. And even if a slayer was called upon her "death" at the end of s6, they might have been killed quickly by a Bringer as they had probably started their plan of killing off all potentials/slayers by then.

Or I'm just talking out my ass...again...

Buffy died in season 1, then at that moment Kendra was called.Buffy was revived by Xander, who performed CPR on her.In season 2, Kendra died.Faith was called. In season 5, Buffy died.No slayer was called because Buffy isn't the active slayer.Faith is.According to Joss, slayers are like batteries.Ounce it's been used, it's dead, and you can't use it again.A slayer wasn't called at Buffy's 2nd death, because she wasn't the active slayer.Faith is the active slayer. The slayer was not meant to be reborn. So she is not destined to call another. In season 7, the reason why Buffy said that a slayer will be called if she died, was because she wanted the potentials, who were goofing around, to be serious about it.At the same scene, Dawnie was there listening.Later, when Dawn thinks she's a SIT, she tells the gang, "If another slayer were to be called, then that'd mean SHE would have die, right?".SHE-Dawn didn't exactly say Buffy's name. The gang already knew Buffy couldn't activate another slayer. They though that Dawn meant Faith.I hope this answers everybodys question.

Cordelia said:
But we really don't know exactly how long it takes to activate a slayer 😛

In season 2 of Buffy, Giles tells that gang, that it doesn't matter how long it takes. When the slayer dies, another slayer will be called, the same moment she dies.It doesn't matter how Buffy stayed dead.A slayer is activated the second another slayer dies.

Actually all of that has been stated in this thread already...we're just discussing how exactly the disruption occurred allowing for The First to strike...

How do you know for sure that Buffy only said that her death would activate one of the potentials just to stop them from goofing around?

Please quote the scene from "Potential" where Dawn states that.

Also the gang didn't already know that Buffy couldn't activate another slayer...as stated before Anya also mentioned Buffy's ability to activate a slayer upon her death in S7.

And as long as we're requesting references Xx, can you give me a link to this one? "According to Joss, slayers are like batteries.Ounce it's been used, it's dead, and you can't use it again"

Have I mentioned my opinion, that that quote doesn't exist?

Thanks a lot nerd4hire for all your facts. Well, now we know almost everything don't we..? The only question is when the line went back to Buffy.. and that must've been in season 6.. So my guess is still the resurrection spell..

That's my guess too eponinethin, mostly because of this seen from Chosen:

"3 EXT. ALLEY BEHIND A STRIP MALL - NIGHT
Anya and Giles step back through the portal they created earlier and back into the alley where they opened it. Both are windblown.

GILES
Are you all right?

ANYA
(limping) Yeah, I just"”I don't understand how Buffy's death mucked up the whole slayer mojo. You know, it's not like she hasn't died before.

GILES
It's not because she died. The Beljoxa's Eye was quite clear about that in its enigmatic way. It's because she lives. Again. Buffy's not responsible for that.

ANYA
Oh. Oh. Willow and me and Xander and Tara. We're the ones who brought Buffy back. We're"”we're the reason The First is here, the reason those girls were murdered. No, it's our fault. The world would've been better off if Buffy had just stayed dead. (walks off)"

I'd like to make another observation concerning this scene. The statements from Buffy and the other characters stating a slayer can be called if Buffy dies happen after this episode.

I have reasearched threads/posts in this site, and others. And I have found some explanations, and this explanation seems to be the most realistic. And it does seem acurate.Unfortunatley I can't find those links anymore.

Dawn-She has to die. (sits on a chair) I mean, if I was everthe slayer, it would mean she died.

Well I'd say the same thing to him, or her or them I'm saying to you. Show me a link. Until you do I'm going to continue saying it doesn't exist. If it did, you'd see it everywhere. I searched for it. All I could find was a link to this site from 2003 where a member was offering up the battery theory as his own personal theory.

But let's move on to something else for a sec.

When Buffy tells the potentials her death could make one of them the slayer, it may be possible to say "Well she was just trying to put the potentials in line, or Buffy is just full of herself, and she doesn't know how the line really works.

When Dawn and Anya say the same thing it becomes a little less likely. Xander and Willow are in the same room, and they don't challenge the other 2 on it so you have to believe they share the opinion. And yes they are talking about Buffy. They're not talking about Faith. Dawn doesn't care about Faith at that time. It wouldn't rock her world if Faith died. If Buffy died it would be a big thing, that's why she's considering it.

When The First Evil says Buffy's death will trigger another slayer, there can be no doubt. It's just too many characters saying the same thing, and The First Evil probably knows about stuff like that. Plus it was the final episode and Joss Whedon wrote it. He's not looking to fool anybody at the point. It's not a foiler. The First Evil says it, and you're supposed to take it seriously.

The First isn't right about everything. The First kept thinking he'd succeed, but he didn't.Just because an unknown character said it, doesn't mean it's true.Would you rather believe a tv show character, or Joss Whedon?

I couldn't find the battery theory.I'm still looking for it, but I did find something.

When Buffy died in Season One, Kendra was called. When Kendra died, Faith was called. Buffy died again in “The Gift.” Shouldn’t another Slayer have been called then, making a total of three Slayers in simultaneous existence?
Dana Arbeit, via email

It wasn’t explained, but the rules according to Joss are that even though Buffy died twice her replacement had already been called and was still alive, so there wouldn’t be a second replacement for Buffy. Does that make sense? If Kendra was Buffy’s replacement, then Faith replaced Kendra. There was still a living Slayer when Buffy died the second time, so another Slayer didn’t get called.

Source: http://www.titanmagazines.com/us/Buffy/Buffy.html

I found more on the third slayer case. This time Joss explains it.

In season 7, it is often said that for one of the potentials to be activated, Buffy will have to die. However technically, Buffy is not carrying on the slayer line - Faith is as Buffy gave this up at the end of season 1 when she died. Even if it is possible for her to still carry on the slayer line, how come another slayer wasn't activated when Buffy died for Dawn in the season 5 finale "The Gift"? [Joss Whedon explained this one himself in an interview. He explained that when Buffy died the first time that triggered Kendra (and after Kendra died, this triggered Faith). Joss explained that the triggering ability only works once for each slayer so Buffy's second death would not call another slayer whereas Faith's death would.]

Everyone/everything thinks it's gonna succeed, of course The First thought that too, The First can't see the future. But you'd think The First should know/feel who's it's biggest enemy, or who's the person who is able to destroy it..

(But Joss Whedon haven't said the line went through Faith in s7 has he..?)

But this has got nothing to do with season 7. Have you read nerd4hire's post? We already know that the line went through Faith from season 3 to at lest the end of season 5. And then we know it went through Faith in season 7. The question is when it changed. And my guess is on the resurrection of Buffy in the beginning of season 6 (like I've said three times now, sorry)..

[/url]

But didn't Jos Wheden write the lines for that character?

Anyway, as I'm new here and I seem to have created quite a discussion with a lot of interesting points. I have 2 questions:

1. What is this freyverse thing I keep reading about?

2. Which episode was Villians and how did Buffy die, I don't seem to recall that one.

Does anyone else think that Joss just might have rushed season 7 and that's why these mistakes regarding the whole whose the chosen one thing occured? Nic Brendon was on TRL today and he said all the cast were signed up for another year but Sarah wasn't interested so maybe Joss just wrote this season quickly cos he didn't have time to prepare for it. It's just a thought, I always thought the ending of Angel was kind of rushed.

Also if Faith was the proper slayer shouldn't the show have changed it's name to, "Buffy A Vampire Slayer"? Cos she wasn't THE only slayer was she? :heee:

Please quote where the First says thar the line goes through Buffy.I have watched all the episodes, and I don't remember him saying this.
