The "I Love Illyria" thread.

Wow, you got into quite a debate over my post. I will clarify what I said. On Ats, human characters are allowed to be powerful, to slay vampires and fight demons. Gunn is an incredible fighter and a great leader. He has brains and the ability not only to protect himself, but also to protect others through slaying demons. Wesley is also a strong fighter. He is intelligent and knows more things about the supernatural world than any other character I've encountered. Wesley uses guns, but that doesn't make him less of a fighter. A gun is a weapon and an "equalizer" that makes him capable of killing some demons that even Angel can't easily kill. If you recall, Wesley easily shot and killed Skip.

One of my questions has always been: Why don't more characters on Ats use guns? I'm sure Wesley spends hours in the shooting range somewhere to keep his skills. Why don't other members of the team join him?

My problem with Ats is that most of the characters are human and while the men are able to physically fight their enemies, the in women in Angel's group don't directly "kick ass." The absence of strong, powerful, human, female fighters is troubling to me. Especially since many of the human men on Angel can fight well.

Holtz provided a very interesting example of a powerful human character. Before he went to Kortof (I can't spell it), Holtz was a consummate vampire slayer without any supernatural aid. Justine, who Holtz only trained for a short time, was able to fight. She wasn't a primary character though, and was not as strong a fighter as the men in Angel's group or Holtz. She managed to slit Wesley's throat, but only by surprise. Mentally she was much weaker than Wesley and he was able to keep her in a closet.

Cordy and Fred have had many opportunities to become better fighters. Cordy expressed an interest in learning how to fight but Fred never did. I can understand why Cordy doesn't go out fighting with the rest of the group. Her unpredictable and increasingly painful visions make it impossible for her to trust herself in combat. If she has a vision she while fighting at best she will be incapacitated and someone will have to rescue her.

Despite the fact that Cordy didn't go out fighting with the group very often, she learned basic self-defense against monsters. My problem with the show is that Fred never became a fighter, but both Wesley and Gunn are strong fighters. Fred is smart, but never took a lead role in fights and couldn't really defend herself against much of what the group faces. She was also Gunn and Wesley's love interest. She was the pretty, smart woman who has to be protected by the men who love her.

It's just odd to me that women in Angel aren't allowed to be strong fighters. If Wesley could learn to kick ass, Fred should be able to do so as well. I liked it in S4 when Fred was able to save the world, but she didn't really fight to do so. Fred out thought her opponents and discovered how to free Angel from Jasmine. What is hard for me to watch is that everyone just returned to their pre-Jasmine roles in the group in S5. Fred didn't remember saving the world.

I like Fred; I would have loved to see her develop into a fighter. Her size should not preclude fighting ability. I just wish that for once on Ats, or Buffy for that matter, that a woman could become a strong physical fighter without supernatural help. Fred had so much room to grow. If they wanted a stronger character for Acker, the writers could have built on the themes of S4 and developed Fred into a fighter and a leading member of the group. Illyria wasn't necessary. As I've said before, I don't mind Illyria. I just don't love her.

I really don't like the way Fred's death was written though. When Fred was dying, she didn't ask what was wrong with her or if she could be saved. She just died tragically and let the men in the group try to develop a way to save her. She got up once to look in the science lab. But research was impossible for her while deathly ill and there were other ways she could have handled her condition.

Towards the end of the episode, with all Fred knows about physiology, she should have known her body was too damaged to survive. Why then didn't she talk to Wesley about her death and make him promise not to let Illyria be born? Wesley didn't tell her about the ax he brought with him to behead the demon. The ax didn't work; he used it too late, but that's not the point.

It is condescending and typical of Wesley not to discuss with Fred what he should do if Angel can't save her. Wesley just reassured Fred and told her against all evidence that she would be all right. Fred knew that she was dying. Wesley and the group didn't have to treat her like a child and avoid telling her the realities of the situation. Fred had a right to know and not knowing what is happening to her body could only have made death harder for Fred.

So in order for a little 5'4'' inch 100 lb. woman like Fred to be acceptable from a femininist perspective she has to be able to have fist fights with full grown men and beat them up, is that what you're saying, because no offense, but that's nuts.

Fred used her magnificent brain, and with it she was probably more powerful than a large full-grown man like Gunn. That's plenty femininist for me. I just don't see what the problem is.

You and Happy went into the feminist perspective thing; I'm just stating my opinion. As a little 5'4'' woman, I think that its nuts that you think that a woman of Fred's or my own size shouldn't be able to do anything physical and defend herself from monsters because she is small and slight. If the show was "Fred astrophysicist" I would have no problem with Fred's lack of fighting prowess. However, Fred chose to fight demons. She has to be able to do so physically. Guns and other similar weapons are fine. I would love to see Fred with a full military arsenal. Flamethrowers, however, are not a good idea since they are extremely explosive. I'm not saying she should have "fist fights" just that Fred should have taken some martial arts and learned to use weapons and fight using her strengths. Also, I was lamenting the general lack of physically kick ass female main characters not just that Fred doesn't fight.

It's interesting. You wanted Fred to be more like Gunn, and Gunn wanted to be more like Fred.

Well I'm sorry, but you just haven't convinced me any of this makes Illyria a bad character, so I am going to continue to Love Illyria

Go right ahead. 😀 She's not bad really. I just don't like the specifics of how they decided to create her.

Really? You know the specifics of how they deciced to create the magnificent one? Do you have a link? I wanna know too. - no second-hand info, or suspicions pls. I need links...lotsa links. I wanna read.

Thank you Drew Goddard for Origin. We the faithful can now add to our Illyria data-base.

* I'm hoping I get this right based on what I thought I heard Spike say, but - She can selectively control Pockets of time.

* She may be able to talk to plants. (Was Spike joking? I'm not sure)

* She enjoys beating Spike up (I don't think this necessarily means she enjoys causing pain, because Spike doesn't show any. I think it's more like a romp with a big fuzzy dog for Illyria with Spike. She wants to keep him for a pet.)

* She can detect lust, and other human emotions such as frustration.

* She will protect Wesley.

* She has Fred's memories.

Wow, After the most recent episode I am beginning to like Illyria more and more. However, she does not have Freds Memories. She indicated she could sense Freds memories, and them being altered in some way, but when Wesly asked her if she could remember them she said they were all lost (Or something along those lines). So she can sort of 'sense' Freds memories since it is her body, but she does not have them. And I think the whole, talking to plants thing was thrown in there for comic-relief, but then again you never know 😎

But I think its safe to say Illyria is becoming a more favorable character (Her kicking spikes ass and all ::evil1:: ), however I still prefer Fred more, and I believe I always will...

Yes yes yes yes!!!! We totally think alike and I love your posts, nerd4hire!!! I love the Spike/Illyria relationship. She is getting more and more interesting. And hell, I experience lust looking at her in her new outfit and can't think of anyone who wouldn't. So, put spike and Illyria together and it's a major drool fest.

and Wes has his own personal bodyguard so noone is ever going to mess with him again. Unless she turns on him but he is all she has except for the half breed.

I Love Illyria!!!

I'm guessing you don't have the episode on tape. Not to worry Wiccan Slayer, I'm always willing to help out a fellow Illyria fan. Here's the passage you're talking about.

Wes:
We are more than just memories.

Illyria:
And yet Fred changed the moment her memory did.

Wes:
Fred's memories were changed?

Illyria:
In places.

Wes:
Can you see what they were before?

Illyria (considering):
No they're gone.

You see, it isn't that Illyria only has a cursory impression of Fred's memories. She remembers everything Fred would have, it's just that Illyria is also affected by the memory altering "reality shift".

This is pointed out again later in the episode after the unaltered memories are returned. Wes and Illyria are discussing the matter in Wes's office.

Illyria:
You betrayed Angel. You stole his son. He tried to kill you.

Wes:
Yes...

Illyria:
Are these the memories you needed back? Does this now make you Wesley?

Wes:
At least I know what happened.

Illyria:
Do you? There are 2 sets of memories; those that happened, and those that are fabricated? It's hard to tell which are which.

Wes:
Try to push reality out of your mind. Focus on the other memories. They were created for a reason.

So you you see...Yes, Illyria does have Fred's memories.

The next bit doesn't apply but it's so cool, I just have to add it

Illyria:
To hide from the truth?

Wes:
To endure it

I just had a cute thought concerning the plant-talking-to thing. Imagine a future episode were Wesley is swallowed by some kind of giant Jumanji man-eating plant. Illlyria runs over to it, grabs it's by it's stem, starts slapping on it's giant petal mouth, and hollers, "Cough it up! Cough it up!"

Hey there!

I liked Fred, she was cute and very resourceful and she said it herself that she survived a dimension where the natives were trying to kill her.

Illyria, I REALLY am pyched about (and with so few episodes left) with her hardcore gothic appearance (she might kick start a blue hair renaissance/craze) and her abilites and fighting style (Her fight with Angel and Spike was kinda neat). Again I'm miffed that we have so short a time to get to know her. They could have started this story line like SOONER at least.

I only have one last thing to say: "Who can make me an avatar or banner with Illyria?" ::heart::

I don't mind Illyria, but I don't really like her. I don't understand why Fred had to die to get another strong female character on the show. It is really annoying to me that the ordinary nonmagical, nonslayer women on Angel are never allowed to really kick ass. Gunn is a fighter and Wesley somehow became an amazing shot and great at demonslayage, yet Cordy and Fred were always in the background. Cordy's visions kind of precluded her from taking a leading role in fighting. She can't kick ass and have a vision at the same time. Fred, however, had great potential as a character. She was good in the episodes with Jasmine as the only person in LA other than Connor not affected by Jasmine. She was smart, inventive, and successful. I wanted some of that initiative to carry over into S5 Fred.

If you are trying to suggest that there is some sexist thing going on with Joss Whedon, please first remember that in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, only Spike was a really strong male character, and there were loads of incredibly strong women, maybe hundreds by the end.

In Fred's case, the main reason that she never became an effective fighter was that she had so much else to do. Particularly in this last season, Fred has been very busy with her science lab. Also, female empowerment doesn't mean that women should be represented as ridiculously strong. It would be insane for a human of Fred's size to purposely go out and look for demons, whatever her gender. Your entire argument seems to hinge around Freds inability to fight, but she never planned to fight evil hand-to-hand. When she joined AI, it was to help them out with the research, and she has been extremely useful to the group in many ways. Surely a woman who is bright and considerate, using her intelligence to 'help the helpless' is an empowering figure for girls everywhere.

Having said this, it is hardly fair to suggest that women in Angel are represented as weak, because there is only one primary female cast member. In the entire history of the show there have only been two - and Cordelia was not as weak as you are claiming. Lorne and Wesley don't fight as much as Cordy used to, and even when they do fight it often goes wrong. The only strong male human was Gunn, who has abandoned his fighting abilities recently anyway. Also, with your blanket statement you neglect the secondary characters who have been introduced. Lilah, Justine and Kate, were all very strong human women. Darla and Dru were two of the strongest, most feared vampires in Whedons mythology - and now Harmony is proving herself both useful and powerful.

If you have to gripe about the lack of girl power in Angel, don't argue about the quality of the women present. Complain that there really aren't enough of them.

PS. Just realised that I have been yammering on for ages wihout addressing the thread. Illyria, yes I love her...

I wasn't talking about Buffy, but just to play devil's advocate remember that all of those women were slayers, potential slayers, or magic. Spike is also not human so in Buffy you could say that other than Robin and possibly Giles there is a lack of fully human characters who fight vampires. Cordy and Anya might be considered exceptions by some, but remember neither came up with strategies for the group or actively sought out demons.

You argue that Fred had too much to do to become an effective fighter. That is silly. She is an astrophysicist and was researching dimensional theory in S4, but even that did not consume all of her time. Wesley not Fred usually provides the practical research in the group. It was only after Wesley left that Fred was forced to hit the books and become the team's information source. If you will recall she hated it. In the last season Fred was busy in the science lab, but even in a 9-5 job a person still has time to learn to fight. In S-5 Fred did go out on a mission with Wesley and also went out to collect Nina's things. Each time she was ambushed and unprepared. She is lucky that she didn't die in either situation. My point is that Fred knows that bad things happen in her line of work. She can't wait for Wesley to hand the gun or assume that she won't be attacked. Any rational person, and Fred is rational should have become skilled in combat in Fred's situation. I think it is a major oversight by the writers and producers that she didn't.

Not if she gets killed the first time someone attacks her. Also, I take issue with your idea that size is the most important determinant of demon killing ability. Weapons are good equalizers and so is training. A small person can kick ass. What about a 5'4'' martial artist with a black belt would you say that she or he is less able to fight demons than say Xander? I don't think so. Fighting demons is hard for any human, yet Wesley and Gunn do so easily so why not Fred or Cordy?

OK. So Wesley and Holtz weren't strong fighters and Gunn isn't anymore. Huh? I'm not claiming that Cordy couldn't fight. She got Angel to teach her remember. For plot reasons, she had visions that could cripple her with pain and knock her unconscious; Cory couldn't afford to go out saving people very often. But there wasn't a woman who could. My comment about the of kick-ass female characters doesn't just apply to existing characters you know. As for the idea that Lilah, Justine, and Kate are somehow the epitome of strong fighters, let me remind you of a few facts. Lilah carries a gun, but hides behind her firm and never went out killing demons. She didn't have to do so. That's not my point. Lilah was a strong interesting woman, but again she wasn't a fighter. I don't think she should have been. The addition of another primary female character who could fight demons would be nice. Kate and Justine weren't as powerful as they seemed. Kate needed Angel to save her and couldn't deal effectively with the supernatural. Justine was Holtz's pet. Both Holtz and Wesley were able to control her completely, which suggests despite her skill she wasn't really a strong, independent demon fighter. Darla, Dru, and Harmony are vampires. I was talking about human women.

Instead of getting defensive, please think about what I am saying. There are no physically powerful, competent demon- fighting, women on Angel although several male characters (Wesley, Gunn, and Holtz) for instance are very good fighters. My question is why?

She also said that she knew when Wes was frustrated by Angel's deception. So, it must be more than just sensing his heat...hehe

Spike says she can sense Scotch, but I don't think that's a super-power, because I can do that too.

Hey, maybe I should get a cape and cowl, and go fight crime. 🙂

Every time I see Illy, I think of the the song 'Blue dabba de dabba da'. *snerk* I love the sexy smurf girl. First the character was a wonderful chance for Acker to show off her acting skills. She's serious, and hilarious as well. I love her dynamics with the other shows and the fact that she can hit like a mack truck....sweet.

Wesley, by the way, is not a strong fighter.

He may be an amazing shot, but thats about it, and his guns are not useful as often as you might expect.

I'm not saying that Fred didn't have the capacity to fight well. I'm just saying why would she want to. She has proved that she is capable of defending herself if necessary, but why would a tiny texan girl want to go out and look for trouble. She was far more valuable for other reasons.

If Fred had gone all 'slayer' I would have been deeply annoyed - the Illyria storyline is much better. I LOVE HER.
