I have one on my wrist and it didn't hurt at first I was watching the tattoist do it and it was all fine until I noticed that he was no longer just wiping away ink but blood as well...that's when I started thinking it hurt.
My advice just don't look at what they're doing and it will be fine...although your's will be on your chest so I guess you can't really see that lol. When you have got it done do tell us if it was painful. I'm planning on getting a D10 (a 10 sided dice) tattooed on my chest soon, would like to know if it hurts.
Also, my dad got a tatoo of his wife's name tattooed on his arm. They broke up and he just got it tattoed over. It's pretty simple really.

No problem ill let you know if it was painful Im going this weekend so nervous im about to look at designs online Ill post if I see any cool ones not a 100% on the design yet just the idea although Im pretty sure what im using.

Aaahhh! Classic! And very pretty indeed! I love the classic sailor-style stuff. And I'm very happy you didn't go for a silly Japanese thingy. They're everywhere. Anyway, don't forget to post pictures when you got it! 🙂

What you guys think?

Is she the first girlfriend you've ever had? Because it sounds to me like you're all excited about finally having one so you're jumping the gun a little bit. You are still young and you never know what might happen in the future. I suggest you do something else to show your affection towards her. It does not have to be a tattoo with her name on it.

Okay that's good. Something like this requires a lot of thought in my opinion. I don't want you to regret it in the long run.

ACK. I have seven tats (& counting) - I love my body art, and I have several more planned over the next 2-3 years.

I've been married 16 years. Last year, my husband and I got tattoos on our 15th anniversary. On the right leg - outer calf area (mine is closer to my ankle). I got yin-yang dolphins and he got connected celtic dragons. In the middle of BOTH tattoos is the roman numeral XV. We've been married many years, & will be many more - but neither of us wanted to get the other's name. WHY? Because... a person can leave or die or whatever. Fine, so you have something to remember them by. But the next person who comes along... you think they'll be pleased to see someone else's name on your body? Doubt it!

Just unsolicited advice.

Otherwise, yes, tattoos hurt. Needles + blood = pain. But it's an addictive pain (said she who has 7 & counting! 😉 ) Some areas hurt more than others. "Bony areas" hurt more than "fat-padded" areas. Hence the ankle tat will hurt more than the butt tat, etc. The last tat I got is on my neck (right/back) and it was the least hurting of all my tattoos. Imagine that.

Good luck - remember - tats aren't for everybody, and they aren't for the quick-mind-changers. Figure out what you want, and know that it's there for life. Sure, it CAN be removed. But not without cost, pain, & oh yeah - a scar. I'm just sayin'...

Thanks for the tips Buff.

Im planning on delaying the tat for a few months just to make sure i dont get sick of the design etc I really need to be 100% and I have only thought about this for two weeks.

You're welcome Dancing Man - and take as long as you need to make a decision about it.

For the record... I thought about my first tattoo for TWENTY YEARS. Not kidding! - got my first one when I turned 40. If I'd done it at 20, I'd be stuck with a ridiculous looking unicorn. ICK! - hurts to even think about it! 😉

As it stands now, I have a seahorse, dolphins, tigerfly (tigerface in the shape of a butterfly), winking sun w/chinese letters (eternal friend), a lion face (just the face) & the Leo symbol, and a sea turtle with a peace sign. You can view them on another tattoo thread in this section.

I have plans for an angel & devil, mermaid, sting-ray, parrot, paw-print and the words which I think describes my life.

And don't forget... tattoos ARE addictive. AND CAN BE EXPENSIVE.

(I can't wait to see what you get!!!!!)

Ok, I know alot about tattoos because I 1) am an aspiring tattoo artist 2) know alot of tattoo artists and 3) have ALOT of tattoos. There are very few (normal) places I havn't been tattoo'd, so I can help you out.
-If its a small tattoo dont worry about the pain, take some tylenol if you're freaked out (just dont tell the tattoo artist, its kind of a no no in the tattoo culture, but I say if it helps lessen the pain then go for it).
-If its a big tattoo, some places that will hurt an insane amount are: armpit area, elbow, trench inside the elbow, wrist, foot/ankle, knee, ribs, stomach, and if you have a bony chest thats gonna hurt. everyone is different of course, but those are generally considered the worst places. If you're looking to avoid pain go for some meat, ie upper arm, calf, etc
-I dont suggest getting her name tattood; its considered bad luck. some artists wont even do them. If I were you id pick something personal about her, and incorperate that into the design. If you met on a boat get a little anchor, that type of deal. You could even find some pretty song lyric or quote to put in the banner that could represent your relationship. I have some song lyrics on me. If she loves Ben Harper get something like "Diamonds on the Inside" in the banner, and have some little diamonds around the heart, stuff like that. I really really think a name is a bad idea, and getting something that you really thought out and personalized would be a 100% times sweeter anyways.

I rly hope this helps you, and I hope I didnt come off as too much like a know-it-all haha
If theres anything I can do tho id be happy to help you with ideas or whatever

Thanks youve given me something to think about.

For everyone saying that tattoos don't hurt, then I'd say that you just didn't get your tattoo in a very painful place. My wrist tattoos and arm tattoos didn't hurt at all (felt more like an intense vibration) but did get pretty tender and more intense towards the end of the 3 hour ordeal. The chest tattoo hurt somewhat badly the entire time, because it was two hours of work pretty much all on my collar bone (I have basically no fat on my chest to cover that up, so it hurt like shit).

There has been some discussion of past tattoo threads etc lately, so I figured I'd make a new one. So heres a thread for all things Tattoos. Be them buffy related or not.
Post pics, storys, questions, whatever.
I'll post some pics of mine eventually, but many of you have already seen some of my stuff. I want to see other peoples.

I'm going under the needle for 6 hours tomorrow, so maybe I'll post the work in progress tomorrow night.

im getting my first tattoo in october. (also getting my tongue pierced)

the tattoo im getting is from the tv show Charmed (triquetra)....CANT WAIT 🙂

Oh. Thought. So I have a funny side note:

So one day years ago my friend, ex-boyfriend, and I were driving past a tattoo parlor and he dares me to go inside and get my tongue pierced. So I accept the challenge, and promptly pass out after the event. I wake up on the floor, apparently "white as a sheet" with this huge fat dude looming over me. He's all, "You ok missy? You passed out."

It was embarrassing. It wasn't even that it hurt, really, but he explained that apparently people just pass out from bodily shock.

I was planning on getting a tattoo this past fall, but my finances have been really tight lately and there were more important things to spend my money on. I think eventually though I'll get some kind of song lyric on my arm, something with a personal meaning.
