The whole grudge on Spike....

Anyway, my thing with Soul Spike is that he acted so much like Souless Spike. I wish there was a difference in their personalities like Angel and Angelus.

Believe me, so do I. I wish everyday that there was a Spike(us).

Us fans of Spike weren't lucky enough to get a perfectly defined alter-ego that with Angel. One which we could excuse and justify every bad thing he did because he was "evil." Convenient, isn't it?

CordyandXander's post wasn't "nonsense." She has the right to her own opinion, like anyone else here. Just because you hate Spike doesn't mean everyone else does.

Which Post Souled Spike did you see, cuz in season 7 he didn't revel in the fists and fangs of combat he ran away from fights. He didn't really fight along the with the good guys, he kinda hung out with them chained up in their basement. He was still sarcastic but not as much, he was totally bullied and pushed around, he was bullied and pushed around by The First, he was sent on a mission with Andrew by Giles.
Warrior in season 7 he was not, with the exception of putting his coat back on to beat up a demon in Get it Done, then be beat up by Faith until the Final fight in Chosen.
God, Spike DID NOT run away from any fights! We do people always say this? I love how you have this incredible ability to simplify everything. He "kinda hung out with them chained up in their basement"? Are you kidding me?

And believe me, he was not beat up by Faith. He left the fight to go support Buffy.

I think you need to take off your Spike beer goggles.
I'll admit my Spike-bias to an extent because, yes, he is my favorite character and we all make concessions for those which we love. But, I am not some blathering fan-girl who fawns over Spike and justifies everything he does, and I resent that insinuation. Just because we prefer the Spuffy relationship, and because we prefer Spike does not mean that we lack in any sort of argumentative skill. We're not "blinded" by our "beer goggles." Your hatred of Spike, which you never seem to miss an opportunity to point out, makes you appear as though you have the goggles on. Don't you see that your hatred of him colors your judgment of him?

And yes, it is difficult when Spike is one's favorite character. I can definitely identify with that. I feel like I spend the majority of my time defending him. He is morally ambiguous. He is complex and he does surprise us. He was beautifually written at times, and badly written at times. He's...Spike. You love to hate him. You hate to love him. He's perfect yet terribly flawed.

I definitely feel like I spend the majority of my time on here defending him, so I hear you there. Sometimes I even have to take a break from this place, let BtVS sink to the back of my mind for a few days, and then come back when I'm sure of my opinions again. Believe me (and I'm sure Joan others will agree), it's hard to always see people condemning your favorite character in the 'verse. And it's hard not to let some portion of that argument get into your head and affect your enjoyment of the fandom, so that's usually when I say, "Time to stop for awhile."

And at the end of the day, I think it's always helpful to remember that it is, in fact, a television show. Sure, how you view something can effect the way you live your life, so I understand why people are concerned when Spike-fans try to defend away the AR, but in reality.... Spike and Buffy don't exist! We gotta keep that in mind, even while we're going crazy talking about every little detail of their lives.

Believe me, so do I. I wish everyday that there was a Spike(us).

As surprising as this seems.... I don't. I like Angel, don't get me wrong, but his character never resonated with me the way Spike does. Spike was different and interesting because of his demon nature and his lack of soul--otherwise he'd have been Angel 2.0, complete with platinum hair. As hard and messy as it is sometimes, I think I'd take hard and messy over cookie-cutter outlines. I feel like Spike is a good example of people, really, just exaggerated a hundred times more like everything else in the Buffyverse. People are rarely completely good or completely bad--usually they're somewhere in the middle, and they have a lot of conflict over their good and bad impulses.

... You know what bugs me? This assumption that Angel is given a get-out-of-jail-free card and Spike isn't. In actuality, I felt that it was very much the other way around in the show. Angel was always brooding over the things that he did. Not Angelus, him. There are several instances of his friends defending him because "that was Angelus", but he himself never claimed that get-out clause. He was deeply sorry for everything he did, and worked hard to redeem himself by helping the helpless and saving the world. I don't forgive his evil actions because he didn't have a soul then. I forgive them because he worked tirelessly to redeem himself for his sins.

Spike on the other hand, was not in the same boat. He returned to Sunnydale with a soul, and everything he did previous to that was pretty much completely discarded, and Spike was treated like a different person who was not repsonsible for things he did before. How many times did we hear Buffy say "things are different now, he has a soul". Not "he's deeply sorry for what he has done and wishes to repent his sins", just "he has a soul". Sure, he was on the good guys' side, but he didn't make any active effort to redeem himself. He didn't even feel remotely sorry about his past victims - in Lies My Parents Told Me he tells Robin that he "doesn't give a piss about [his] mum" (before taunting him and telling him that his mother never loved him, as all noble champions do). Buffy's words in "Never Leave Me" struck me, when Buffy told him that she's "seen his penance". Uh, what penance? What exactly has he done between getting his soul and that scene? A grand total of piss-all. He doesn't make any special effort to redeem himself, he doesn't apologise to anyone but Buffy. He did not accept responsibility for anything he did, or really do anything truly good or brave until his sacrifice in "Chosen", he just handed in his get-out-of-jail-free soul and Buffy accepted it. , on the other hand, did not.

I don't believe that getting a soul makes anyone a different person. It's a mitigating factor for sure, but I don't accept the argument that "what he did before doesn't matter, because he has a soul now". It's what you do after you get the soul that matters. Until "Chosen", Spike did very little, barely even showing regret for his crimes, so for me in S7 he's no different from the man that tried to rape Buffy in that bathroom.

Only Buffy treated him differently, though. And what Spike did - geet a soul - was a big deal. A vampire had never purposely went and got a soul before. That can't be discounted.
Oh, you again! All you have to do is call Spike "watered-down" and this'll be the exact same debate we had before. I'm going to skip it, if you don't mind. My opinions haven't changed.

I wasn't trying to make all those points, I was commenting on White Avengers very wrong Ode to Spike up there.

The post souled Spike who I saw in Season 7 was a man who was trying to be the man who Buffy wanted him to be, even though he no longer held much hope of being worthy of her. Because of that, he suppressed his violent nature, choosing to avoid combative situations, afraid to let the "old Spike" take control once more (maybe he saw that as his "Angelus" personality, and thought that Buffy would be repelled by it, but that's just a theory). Once Buffy made it clear that that was what she needed and wanted, Spike had no trouble whatsoever in obliging her.

And as for the fight between Faith and Spike, all I saw was Faith giving Spike all that she had, and him walking away from it. Both in the cemetery AND later in Buffy's house, Spike was never in any danger from Faith.

True, but I still ask where you saw all the stuff in your post from above, you commented on a Spike that wasn't afraid to fight and didn't run away - but thats not true at all Spike didn't fight and did run away, presouled Spike wasn't afraid of a fight.

And I just saw that as Spike running away from another fight, like he had done since he got his soul back.

He may not have relished in the kill as he says but there is a difference between fighting and relishing the kill, and he was fighting demons.

God, Spike DID NOT run away from any fights! We do people always say this? I love how you have this incredible ability to simplify everything. He "kinda hung out with them chained up in their basement"? Are you kidding me?

We always say it because he did:

Spike SPINS the demon to face him - and KICKS HIM IN THE NUTS. The demon howls, doubling over in pain. Spike hesitates a second - then RUSHES to Anya, GRABS HER.

ANYA
Hey!

And Spike RUNS off with Anya, leaving the pained but still- standing demon behind.
Shooting script from buffyworld.com,

thats from Get it Done.

And I may have simplified it, but what would you say he was doing, becasue he wasn't fighting for them, he was chained up so he couldn't be bitched slapped around by The First anymore.

I'll admit my Spike-bias to an extent because, yes, he is my favorite character and we all make concessions for those which we love. To be honest that comment was aimed at anyone outside of White Avenger, I know people make allowances for their favorite characters, but I was saying White Avenger had beer goggles on because of the Speech he wrote describing Spike that was pretty much a lie, and not Spike from Season 7 at all!

... You know what bugs me? This assumption that Angel is given a get-out-of-jail-free card and Spike isn't. In actuality, I felt that it was very much the other way around in the show. Already said my piece on this in your karma, but again, I really disagree. Angelus is a crutch to Angel's character, because no matter how much he broods and fights on the side of good, he still has him to blame.

Spike on the other hand, was not in the same boat. He returned to Sunnydale with a soul, and everything he did previous to that was pretty much completely discarded, and Spike was treated like a different person who was not repsonsible for things he did before. Your bias against Spike is pretty clear. Of course, my bias for Spike is pretty clear, too. Still, when you're looking at all of Spike's actions through that veil of dislike, it's really easy to twist everything he does.

He did feel bad about his victims--I've argued this before and I will again. When Buffy accuses Spike of being a murderer, he says (paraphrasing, for once), "You think I'd add to the body count now? It haunts me. All of it." The problem is, the show didn't have time to delve into it, not like they did with Angel. There were the Scoobies and the First and Wood and The Potentials and Faith and the battle and the Ubervamps--there really wasn't room in the plot for a constantly broody Spike.

Also, Spike and Angel are frankly different people. Angel was the type to brood for a century over his crimes before doing anything to fix them. I'm not saying his actions aren't impressive or noble, but hey, he's the brooding type. Spike is much more the person who shoulders the burden and keeps moving with it.

And "he doesn't make a special effort to redeem himself"! Now, really! He goes to Africa and fights through a vicious tournament to win his soul. How is that fight not enough proof? No, he hasn't been at the penance gig for as long as Angel, but from what I saw on AtS, he'll get there. And besides, he sacrificed himself to save the world. Yes, Spike has well and truly won his redemption and the title of Champion.

I do point out that Wood was trying to kill him. It doesn't make it better, but if Spike's a little too pissed off to weep and cry about Wood's mom, then... I don't really blame him.

I actually agree with you on this. I have never put as much stock in souls as they did on the show, because there is way too much grey there. Spike fought at Buffy's side all through S7, he helped trained the Slayers, and he stood by her when everyone else betrayed her. Without him, she would not have found the strength to get the scythe, to reclaim her place as leader, and to continue fighting and eventually win against the First. Yes, he had trouble. Yes, he wanted to distance himself from the violence he once loved, but that phase passed.

He is very different from the man who tried to rape Buffy. I'm sorry he doesn't seem that way for you, but there's no doubt in my mind. Spike is, if nothing else, incredibly capable of putting up a shiny veneer. Even the person he is, "Spike" was crafted as a tough-guy, scrappy image that was far removed from the poet he once was. Just because he didn't handle his guilt in the exact same way Angel did does not mean he's a lesser man for it.

To be honest that comment was aimed at anyone outside of White Avenger, I know people make allowances for their favorite characters, but I was saying White Avenger had beer goggles on because of the Speech he wrote describing Spike that was pretty much a lie, and not Spike from Season 7 at all!

Since that comment was aimed directly at me, then let me answer it. To begin with, I object very strenuously to the implication that I wear "beer goggles" when it comes to my judgment concerning Spike . For your information, and I believe that I have stated this on more than one occasion, my drink of choice is Dr Pepper, not beer. Please bear that in mind in the future when you wish to accuse me of bias. Beyond that, there might be a grain of truth in your statement, but only a grain.

Certainly I am biased toward Spike. That, along with the Dr Pepper statement, should have been obvious to just about everyone here since long before this post began. I thought by now there would be no doubt in the matter. But I am no more biased toward Spike than certain Bangels are toward Angel. Certainly, I am at the extreme end of the spectrum on this matter, and I am perfectly balanced on the other end by my dear friend and favorite sparring partner, Miss K. I think that things have worked out quite well that way for the time that we have shared here on the Boards.

Just keep in mind in the future that biased is in no way the same thing as blind. I recognize Spike's shortcomings, but I believe that his good qualities outweigh them.

And by the way, juts because my interpretation of something doesn't agree with yours or anyone elses, that doesn't make it a lie, just an opposing opinion.

Already said my piece on this in your karma, but again, I really disagree. Angelus is a crutch to Angel's character, because no matter how much he broods and fights on the side of good, he still has him to blame.

Please give me one instance where he blames Angelus rather than shouldering the blame himself. The issue isn't how the fans supposedly present the issue, it's how the show handled it. And I think that Spike was given an excuse in the form of a soul that didn't

Your bias against Spike is pretty clear. Of course, my bias for Spike is pretty clear, too. Still, when you're looking at all of Spike's actions through that veil of dislike, it's really easy to twist everything he does.

But I used to love Spike. He was one of my favourite characters. This "bias" only came from him starting to become a loathsome character in my eyes through some of his actions and other characters' responses. If anything I was sugarcoating his character for a while because I liked him so much, until eventually I gave up and said "screw this, he's really start to piss me off". That was in S6. Then at the start of S7 I said to myself "self, forget about S6, he didn't have a soul then, let him start anew and judge him on that". He managed to break my optimism then too.

I think we should all stop talking about "bias" against or for a certain character. It's not really what bias means. For example, if you are a Bangel shipper you may be biased towards disliking Spuffy. But it doesn't make you biased towards liking Bangel. You like Bangel because you like Bangel. I dislike late-season Spike because I don't like late-season Spike. There's no bias involved, I'm simply judging his actions.

He did feel bad about his victims--I've argued this before and I will again. When Buffy accuses Spike of being a murderer, he says (paraphrasing, for once), "You think I'd add to the body count now? It haunts me. All of it."

And he clearly felt really bad for Wood too. :rolleyes2 Expressing one line of guilt isn't enough - he never even said sorry to anyone but Buffy.

The problem is, the show didn't have time to delve into it, not like they did with Angel. There were the Scoobies and the First and Wood and The Potentials and Faith and the battle and the Ubervamps--there really wasn't room in the plot for a constantly broody Spike.

There wasn't time? Then they should've made time! It's not like it would've taken up a lot - in three seasons of Buffy, Angel's angst was only "delved into" in one episode, Amends. The rest was worked into his general character and dialogue.

Also, I'm not asking for a broody Spike. There's not much I want less than a broody Spike. I just want a Spike that isn't given the get-out clause of a soul as much as he was in S7.

You know, when I really think about it, it's not Spike who really annoys me the most in S7. It's how other people react to him - and when I say other people I mean Buffy. She constantly gives him the get-out soul clause, chooses him over her friends, refuses to see the bigger picture, letting him free out of his chains when he is still a danger to everyone around him. Not to mention that he got far too much screentime for my liking, while three of the original core four were often pushed to the side. Of course, Spike himself annoyed me too, but that helped.

^See above. I don't want him to brood, I want him to accept responsibility a little more, and show that he is a different person rather than just telling.

Let me quote myself...

What exactly has he done between getting his soul and that scene? ... didn't really do anything truly good or brave until his sacrifice in "Chosen".

I was talking specifically about what he has done during S7, not just before and not right at the end and not on AtS. Even more specifically, what he has done between the start of S7 and that scene in "Never Leave Me".

I do point out that Wood was trying to kill him. It doesn't make it better, but if Spike's a little too pissed off to weep and cry about Wood's mom, then... I don't really blame him.

OK, so Wood attacked him. Spike defends himself? Perfectly acceptable. Spike almost kills him? Wrong, but understandable. Not apologising for killing his mother? Reflects badly on him. Taunting him, telling him that his dead mother never loved him? Horrible, bordering on evil.

He is very different from the man who tried to rape Buffy. I'm sorry he doesn't seem that way for you, but there's no doubt in my mind.

Well in the end, all it comes down to is our own opinions and interpretations. We're just throwing them at each other. 🙂

Spike is, if nothing else, incredibly capable of putting up a shiny veneer. Even the person he is, "Spike" was crafted as a tough-guy, scrappy image that was far removed from the poet he once was.

So he didn't feel vaguely sorry for Robin's mother because he's putting on a facade and was reluctant to let the sensitive side of him show? So he told him those horrible things to protect his poetic soul from showing? I fail to see how that's any better.

Just because he didn't handle his guilt in the exact same way Angel did does not mean he's a lesser man for it.

I never said that. I want Spike to do his own thing. I just don't want him to act like an a-hole to anyone who isn't Buffy, and I don't want Buffy to continually make excuses for him and side with him.

For the record, I don't like Buffy in S6 or 7 either. 😉

Angel gets just as much blame, yeah, Buffy even says everything he did in the past he did it to her and that he can make amends. Angel certainly doesn't get anymore allowances than Spike. agreeness

I can completely understand this. Obviously it doesn't bother me, because I find their relationship to be one of the most interesting aspects of the show, but I could see how Buffy's obvious favoritism regarding Spike during Season 7 could irriate some fans.

P.S. Not directed to anyone in particular: When will people stop comparing the two? Angel and Spike. They're different people. I'm so sick of fans elevating one to make the other look bad. So, Angel handled his guilt differently than Spike did. Why was this the case? Because they're different people, who respond to things differently. This does not make one better then the other. I find it hard to believe that people can honestly argue that.

Well sort of agree, but I can understand why the comparison takes place. They are two men in very similar circumstances. Yes, they are different people and nobody expects them to act in the same way, but it's good to have a point of reference when analysing either one of them, and comparing one to the other is an easy way to do this.

Because, like it or not, for some people it does make one of them better than the other. I'm not going to pretend that I like Spike or think he's just as deserving of everything as Angel because then I would be lying. I don't and he doesn't.

I also, if I choose, don't have to try and argue why I think that. I think it and that's enough at the end of the day. And I agree that they are different and they deal with things differently but that doesn't mean that one way of being or dealing with things isn't more attractive to certain people.

I can see why people would compare Angel and Spike. They are the two biggest loves during Buffy and are similar as people but there place in Buffy's life was different. People are always going to compare them. I don't think souled spike is to blame for the rape because I compare him to Angel and think they are similar, if not the same. I think its ok to compare them like that, but when we are saying "Spike is better than Angel because he loved her when he had no soul." is silly.

There seems to be alot of Spuffy hating in here.....it's getting kind of offending.

There seems to be alot of Spuffy hating in here. Just because somebody likes Spuffy does not mean we are as terrible as you seem to be making us out to be. You dont know if we are your definition of a Spuffy and its not fair to make rude comments that are hurtful. When I commented and said that that was "quite an attack" at spuffy, it was because I personally was offended but I really did not want to get into it.

I don't think anyone meant to be hurtful or rude but I'm sorry if you were offended. We're all guilty of making assumptions about people, I guess but it does work both ways. I'm not using that a justification by any means, and I hope that I haven't said anything personally that's upset you because I know how frustrated I get when things are assumed about me because I'm a Bangel supporter.

And I agree that they will always be compared. I think its the nature of argument/debate. I'm very much willing to say that I do probably hold Spike up to Angel's standards and for me he always falls short but I don't think I'm wrong for doing it. I am merely human! 😛 😉
